What could be a better way to chase the winter blues away than to tickle one’s funny bone? The

intention of this course is to do just that, with essays from some of North America’s funniest writers,

including Mark Twain, O. Henry, James Thurber, Dorothy Parker, Lenny Bruce, Jean Shepherd, David

Sedaris, Ian Frazier, and more. We will meet, starting in February and running through March and

April, on the first and third Wednesdays of the month, from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. in the Activity Room.

Nothing to purchase—the essays will be handed out the week before we discuss them.

Welcome to a special Reminiscence Writing at Bronson Place. In this course we will have the

opportunity to review the 20th (and 21st century!) as we have seen it. This is our opportunity to write

and share with classmates whatever part of your personal history we wish. We look forward to

learning more about your experiences. Classes will be on January 9.

Our collaboration with professors from Western Michigan University continues in January with a

presentation on Kalamzoo, Michigan and the Civil War. Join Archives and Regional History Collections

Director, and Librarian, Sharon Carlson for a fascinating look at the Civil War through stories and facts

about people from our own West Michigan community who experienced it. Then on Tuesday, March

14 enjoy learning about Driverless Cars, Drones and Emerging Technologies from Dr. Kapseong Ro,

Associate Professor Department of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering.

The Continental Congress (and Agreement), the Articles of Confederation (1781), the 1783 Treaty of

Paris, the Land Acts of 1784-85 and the Northwest Ordinance of 1787 are often overshadowed by the

Declaration of Independence (1776) and the Constitution of the United States (1787) as U S founding

documents. However, for several years these 29 “other” documents held sway in terms of governing

the United States, and the Midwest, in particular Ohio and Indiana, violated the provisions of one law

and “stole” land from Michigan, which led to the Toledo War and the addition of the UP to Michigan.

Thomas Jefferson proposed that Midwest states should be named Sylvania, Chersoneus, Assenspia,

Saratoga, Polypotamia, Pelyssia, Michigania & Metropotamia. Course Price:

Numerology is the ancient science of studying numbers. Do not let this frighten you. We use,

primarily, the numbers from 1 to 9, and if you can add and subtract you have it made. It is believed

that numbers are the cosmic code of the universe, and understanding the higher and lower vibrations

of numbers and how to use their energies will be of benefit to you. If you are looking for a fun, easy,

and often revealing way of improving your life by knowing yourself or others better, look no further.

All you need to get started is the date of your birth and the letters of your name.

This popular program brings an educational presentation into our Auditorium every month, along with

a free lunch! This spring you can look forward to new and exciting presentations, including Stephanie

Hoffman from Open Doors on February 1; John Hillard from Lending Hands on March 1; Tom

Back for another semester, Bronson Place Pickers will hit the town to discover hidden gems at antique

markets, re-sale shops, or a surprise place from Ken. Stops can be made along the way and he will also

take requests. He will provide tips and tricks for finding a bargain, and share his knowledge and

passion for "treasures". Like they say, one man's junk is another man's treasure. Be sure to bring your

own money if you want to buy anything and for lunch if the group wants to stop!

Remember how much fun family board game night used to be? Gloria wants to add that fun back into

your life with this terrific class that will refresh your skills at traditional board games, and introduce

you to a few new ones. Who doesn't like a good game of Sorry, Life or Yahtzee ? Have you heard of

the games, Qwirkle and Mancala ? Come to the Inn and learn how to play!

If you like to figure things out, and love the sense of achievement you attain y solving puzzles, be sure

to join Sarah on Tuesday nights. Each Tuesday she will have a puzzle to solve. These puzzles will range

from the jigsaw-traditional type, to those of the brain-teaser variety, with a few puzzle games thrown

in for good measure.
