Series Outline:
First incorporated in 1836, Bridgeport is notorious for a raucous political history that includes both liberating accomplishments and salacious scandals. From a state senator who spent several years in prison for racketeering to a mayor who was caught taking drugs while in office, Bridgeport has had its fair share of unlawful politicians. The political playground of the city has also seen invigorating leaders who fought hard to bring jobs, industries and prosperity to the community. The city’s most famous mayor was none other than circus impresario P.T. Barnum. Discover the stories behind some of the most contentious elections, like the alleged ballot stuffing that ended the twenty-four-year era of socialist mayor Jasper McLevy or the power politics and threats that landed John Mandanici in office. Join author and reporter Rob Sullivan as he brings the Park City’s fiery political history alive.
Enjoy the bountiful blooms of Spring at the NY Botanical Gardens. Highlights include a tour of the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory and views of The Azalea and Rock Gardens.
The Greater Bridgeport Symphony's 69th season will be one of exploration and discovery -- for the audience, the orchestra and its new music director and principal conductor, Eric Jacobsen. A music director's first season is always a special one, Jacobsen said. "When putting the season together, I had in mind (programming) alive with discovery and excitement, full of chance and exploration. We will have the repertoire that we all know and love to re-examine, and some new works that have a real `wow' factor".

We’re surrounded by inventions. Consider the clocks, appliances, and transportation that coordinate our days. Or the televisions, cell phones, and social media that connect us to each other. And the shopping malls, department stores, and catalogs that define the modern retailing experience. Where did all these inventions come from? How do they work? And how do they reflect—even define—the values of our culture? From prehistoric times to the 21st century, inventions have changed the world, enabling humans to produce more food and energy and to establish social order and cultural meaning. In fact, great inventions have marked a number of key turning points in human history, transforming society and our daily lives.

The event will begin at 2p.m. in the Auditorium.Kinsman will discuss the history of the Playhouse and the inner workings of play development and creation, and offer a unique perspective of the behind-the-scenes production process that goes into his work. Attendees of the presentation are encouraged to ask questions and participate in an informal and open conversation about the Playhouse.Artistic Director, Mark Lamos recently stated “The live performing arts are ephemeral, but at their best they can exist powerfully in the imagination long after ceasing to exist on the stage. That's why at the Playhouse we strive each year to provide you with dramas, comedies, and musicals that don't just stimulate the heart and mind, but that will leave impressions that linger with you long after the curtain comes down. That holds especially true of our 2015 season, a lineup full of extraordinary plays by some the theater's most talented artists.”The presentation is free of charge, and is open to the public, however reservations are required. To RSVP, please contact Tracy-Ann Samuel, ext 6311
Everyone has a pet peeve about the way the news is presented in newspapers and magazines, or on broadcast television, cable television, radio and the internet. Too liberal? Too conservative? Too sensational? Too trivial? Too full of errors? Bring your complaint to this session, conducted by Paul Janensch, a resident who was a reporter and newspaper editor and taught journalism at Quinnipiac University.
Experience exotic creatures from around the world. Get up close and learn about the species behavior, environment and individual characteristics. This is an interactive learning experience that is not to be missed.
Can you stump the others? This guessing game makes us use our imagination and creativity in pretending to be a historic or famous figure. At first the clues are difficult, the more clues that are given the easier for others to guess who you are pretending to be. The best clue yet was “I am not a human or animal but I am in the entertainment world?” “I am only three feet tall”. He was Charlie McCarthy a wooden puppet!
