Hello and Thank You for your interest in Watermark University!

Your curiosity is to be commended and it may even be the key to better health. Studies show that satisfying curiosities and learning new things can keep the mind AND BODY agile and sharp. That’s why we created Watermark University. We know that stimulating the mind and strengthening the body has enormous benefits at any age and may even slow the process of memory loss.

Besides being good for you, keeping your brain and the body active and engaged doesn’t just improve your life – it’s a whole lot of fun! Enroll in a class or two that pique your interest. I’m confident you’ll learn something new and make a few friends along the way. While you’re at it, why not suggest a class or even volunteer to teach a subject you’re passionate about?

Just give us a call to reserve a space in a class that intrigues you. Please keep in mind that class space is limited, priority is given to residents and most, but not all classes are free. We look forward to hearing from you and seeing you in a Watermark University course this semester!

Course Faculty Day and Time Location Abstract Art Community Life 2nd Wednesday – 3:15pm Activity Room Abstract art uses a visual language of shape, form, color and line to create a composition which may exist with a degree of independence from visual references in the world. In this creative expression class there is no right or wrong was to create art. Around the World Pauline Kungu & Kim Pepe 2nd Wednesday – 2pm Activity Room Our Business Manager, Kim, and our Pathways Director, Pauline, have been all around the world. During this program they will lead a group in learning more about Africa, Clear Water, St. Johns Virgin Island and Las Vegas!! Artists in All Dana Schury 3rd Monday – 2pm Activity Room Everyone has an artistic talent, even those who feel they are not artists! During the program Dana will guide the group in painting techniques which are not only simple but will lead to an amazing outcome! Body Pump Community life Thursdays – 10am Activity Room This is a weight based group fitness class that focuses on eight separate muscle-groups with an opening warm up track and closing cool-down track. California Explored Megan Richmond 2nd Monday – 11am Activity Room San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Diego and Santa Barbara will be explored over the next four month as we discovery the history, culture and must see attractions in each of these cities! We will be leasing a West Coast Life during this program! Charitable Causes Megan Richmond 2nd Wednesday – 11am Activity Room There are so many amazing organizations from the Alzheimer’s Association and the Susan G Komen Foundation to the American Red Cross and Ministries of Caring. During this class we will take a closer look at the mission and events orchestrated by these groups and discover ways we can be involved and help support the cause! Collectible Items Esther Weik 2nd Friday – 2pm Activity Room From coins and spoons to stamps and dolls people can collect traditional and unique items. Can you believe that an Action Comics No 1, published in June 1930, was sold in the 1990s for $185,000 – WOW! During this program we will have an opportunity to look at collectable trends over the years, the sale of certain pieces of memorabilia and learn about specific collectable hobbies and professions.

Course Faculty Day and Time Location Cookies by Etta Etta Murphy 1st Friday – 11am Activity Room Resident, Etta Murphy, used to help bake cookies in her uncle’s bake shop and was so popular that she was often requested to make cookies for the local community! Join Etta has she whips up some of her most popular batches and the best part is you get to sample the final product! Current Events John Williams Select Wednesdays - 6:30pm Activity Room Come share your thoughts and ideas on today’s news. John Williams, a prominent lawyer in Delaware will keep you up to date on all the happenings of today through reviewing headlines, reading newspapers and participating in lively discussions and debates. Customs & Etiquette Maria Boslego 1st Wednesday – 2pm Activity Room Do you how to make a proper table setting for a formal dinner party or that a handshake with direct eye contact amongst strangers suffices in the Italian culture? During this class we will not only discuss event etiquette for parties and gatherings, but also customs that take place in various cultures. Experiencing Philadelphia Julia Cavicchio 3rd Thursday – 11am Activity Room There are countless “must see” things to do in our local Philadelphia area. Many of these items are rich in history, promote the fine arts and have entertainment value. We will delve into the meaning of certain landmarks and see what else Philadelphia has to offer! Fall Cocktails Dorene Stocker & Bobbi Cassidy 4th Tuesday - 3:15pm Activity Room Shaken not stirred! Join our HR director, Dorene and our Resident Care Director, Bobbi as they mix up some of your favorite fall cocktails. This is sure to be a crowd pleaser when you sip the refreshing cocktail while learning the history of the drink! Famous Singers Melissa Gravatt 2nd Saturday – 10am Main Lobby From Bing Crosby and Ella Fitzgerald to Frank Sinatra and the Andrews Sisters. We know these famous singers for their popular songs, but what do we know about the person themselves. While we enjoy listening to their popular tunes we will take a closer look at these musical legends. Famous Landmarks Deborah Cook 3rd Saturday – 10am Main Lobby Mount Rushmore, The Statue of Liberty, Niagara Falls, Gold Gate Bridge and many, many more well know landmarks will be discussed and explored during this education and entertaining program!

Course Faculty Day and Time Location Fitness Steps Jen Quinones 3rd Wednesday – 11am TBD Join Executive Director Jen as she not only share s some fun fitness facts and fads with the group, but also leads everyone in a walking fitness adventure around the community grounds. We are taking the first step to a healthy lifestyle! Food & Wine Tour Dante Iocona 3rd Friday – 2pm Activity Room Join Dante, our food service director, as he leads the group on a food and wine tour from throughout the world. During the interactive class you will learn about the history of the wine, what food it pairs best with and also have the opportunity to sample the wine and food being discussed. Food Showdown Team Rockland 2rd Monday – 2pm Activity Room We have many talented cooks and bakers in our community and now it to test their talents. Inspired by the cooking channels program, Food Throw down, we will seek to replicate the show as we group up into teams that face off in a competition to see who can make the best appetizer, side dish and dessert! Fun & Fit Club Community Life Select Mondays – 3:15pm Activity Room What a better way to stay healthy then to join a fitness club! During the course we will work on your strength, balance and endurance through interactive exercises! It is never too late to get fit! Global Style Maria Boslego 3rd Friday – 11am Activity Room Berets are a typical hat that is found in Europe while a cowboy hat is more often scene in Texas. Through the United States and across the globe there are many fashion trends that are specific and popular depending on the region. During the program we will explore these style trends and see how different cultural standards compare. Gone Camping Community Life / Local Boy Scouts 4th Wednesday – 11am Activity Room Have you ever been camping? Do you know where pitch your tent? Do you know what to pack? We will look into popular camping sites, trends and techniques. Of course we will also learn about “glamping” a glamorized version of camping! Happy & Healthy Megan Richmond 1st Wednesday – 11am Main Lobby Throughout life we are on a journey that is full of many twists and turns. It is how we react to these twists and turns that make us who we are. We will discuss coping strategies, forgiveness and explore how acceptance can impact our life. Additionally, we will use real like life examples and determine ways in which we could / would react.

Course Faculty Day and Time Location History of Tea Megan Richmond 2nd Tuesday – 11am Activity Room “Dump the Tea into the Sea”! From the Boston Tea Party and using tea as medicine to how tea is made and the health benefits associated with it – nothing is off limits! Of course during this class we will be able to sip and savor a wide variety of hot and cold tea as well! Honey, Honey Guest Lecturer 2nd Monday – 11am Activity Room Did you know that the honey bee is the only insect that produces food eaten by a man or that harvesting is best done at the end of the nectar flow and when the bees have capped the honey? We will explore various angles of the honey harvest process and the uses that go along with honey! Joy of Laughter Melissa Gravatt 3rd Saturday – 3:15 Main Lobby They say laughter is the best medicine! What is a way of relieving stress, leading a healthier life style, having fun and feeling rejuvenated all at the same time? Joining us at the laughter course will help do all of the things mentioned above. Come feel free to laugh, be silly, and just be happy!

Kintz Streisand Cinema Jim Kintz 2nd Tuesday – 1:30pm 2nd floor lounge Maintenance Director, Jim, is a film buff and loves sharing his passion for movies with everyone. In his latest series Jim will present several films starring the legendary Barbara Streisand. Before the class the movies actors, plot line, and additional information will be discussed. Meaning of Flowers Community life 4th Friday - 11am Activity Room Did you know that the yellow rose represents joy, happiness and friendship or that carnation symbolizes the bonds of affection, health and energy? One would think that sending or receiving flowers may be a simple process, but for flowers enthusiast the meaning behind certain flowers is key and can certainly be used as symbols for different energies. Mixed Media Community Life 4th Thursday – 6:30pm Activity Room In this course you will use a small coloring photo as the beginning of a painting. A colorful square photo will be selected that has elements that can be continued, such as a flower or horizon lines! Time to test your artistic talents and have some fun! Music from around the world Maria Boslego 4th Monday – 2pm Activity Room

Steel drums are often played on an island setting, clog dancing is popular in Germany and don’t forget about the Can-Can in Spain – there are many countries and states that have their preferred musical taste. This course will be music to our ears as we explore the world of sound that is popular in various countries!

“A picture is worth a thousand words” During this program we will not only explore famous photographs, but also the attention to detail that does in to capturing the best images. Lighting, set-up and subjects will be the main topics for this interactive program. Positive Sayings & Quotes Community life 2nd Saturday – 3:15pm Main Lobby

There have been well-known prophets, life coaches and everyday individuals who have spoken words of wisdom. We will look into the meaning behind powerful saying and quotes and the impact they have on our emotional health.

Salty Snacks Brenda Jones 4th Tuesday – 2pm Activity Room

Salty or sweet – either way it is sure to be a treat! Pretzels, Chips, Nachos and Popcorn are just a few of the many salty snacks that will be enjoyed during the program. Throughout the course you will learn the history of the snack, how it was made and some fun unique recipes as well.

Seasonal Crafting Megan Richmond 3rd Thursday – 6:30pm Activity Room

Who doesn’t enjoy a winter door wreath or a painting using only fresh fruit? Each week we will select a hands on craft using a variety of techniques and simplistic methods.

Sing & Share with Joan Joan Wagner 4th Monday – 10:45am Brandywine Room Joan enjoys sharing her passion for music, psalms, and poetry as she leads a spiritual gathering. The program focuses to strengthen your belief and passions, while providing the opportunity for deep thought and reflection.

Spirituality Explored Megan Richmond 1st Thursday – 11am TBD Spirituality extends beyond an expression of religion or practice of religion. There is a pursuit for a spiritual dimension that not only inspires, but creates harmony with the universe. That relationship between ourselves and something greater compels us to seek answers about the infinite. During these thought provoking sessions we will discovery what spirituality means to us personally and also what other cultures view it as. Square Dancing Connie Modesti 4th Monday – 11am Activity Room Resident, Connie, knows a thing or two about square dancing, not only did she used to square dance, but her kids did as well. She enjoyed square dancing so much that she even began to make her own costumes for local dancers. We will learn the inner workings of the dance that originated in England in the 17th century.

Course Faculty Day and Time Location Survival Skills Maria Boslego 3rd Monday – 11am Activity Room What would you do if you found yourself stranded on a back road in the middle of nowhere? What if you got lost on a camping trip? What if you were swimming and you saw a shark? In today’s world we often embody the flight or fight strategy and the previous mentioned scenarios are not different. We will talk about the ways people adapt to situations in order to succeed and survive! Sweet Tooth Cassie Hall 2nd Friday – 11am Activity Room Who doesn’t enjoy a sweet treat?!?! During this program we will create unique sweets, traditional favorites and easy desserts – this is a program that you do not want to miss as you will walk about with many recipes and also a full tummy! Tai Chi Victoria McGonigle 3rd Tuesday – 10am Activity Room Tai chi is an ancient Chinese tradition that, today, is practiced as a graceful form of exercise. It involves movements performed in a slow, focused manner and accompanied by deep breathing. Each posture flows into the nest without pause, ensuring that your body is in constant motion. Join us for this stretching exercise which will help manage stress, promote good health, and improve quality of life. The Art of Jazz Maria Boslego 1st Monday – 11am Activity Room Have you ever heard of Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, Lena Horne and Nat “King” Cole? These will be some of the featured Jazz performers during this upbeat interactive class! Theraband Stretch Maria Boslego Fridays – 10am Activity Room Resistance bands are made of strong, thin rubber with handles at the end, and come in a variety of resistances depending on your fitness level. With resistance bands, you can do just about any type of strength training exercise -- chest presses, rows, shoulder presses, tricep extensions, bicep curls, and even squats -- without the need for heavy weights. Time to Decorate Dana Schury 1st Monday – 2:00pm Activity Room It is always fun to come up with themed decorations for a party, holiday or special event. During this Pinterest inspired class we will let out our inner Martha Stewarts and create decorations for our community. Time to Tone Community Life Weekends – 11am Activity Room During this exercise program we will use light weights and our own body to create a dynamic exercise. Strength training help to protect bone health and muscle mass, develop better body mechanics and can play a role in disease prevention. Now if the time to tone our bodies and mind!

Course Faculty Day and Time Location Travel Adventures Community Life 3rd Monday – 2pm 2nd floor movie lounge Many of us had the opportunity to travel the world – join us as we visit some of the places some were never able to travel to, while bringing back memories for others! Unsolved Mysteries Maria Boslego 4th Friday – 2pm Main Lobby An unsolved mystery is a case in which there is no definitive answers as to what happened. What ever happened to Amelia Earnhardt or the Lingbergh baby? These are just a few of the interesting tales we will take a deeper look at by examining the evidence and learning the details of some of the most well-known unsolved mysteries! Watercolor Works Community Life 1st Thursday – 6:30pm Activity Room If you are an experienced artist, just beginning or have an appreciation for art then this is the perfect course for you! Watercolor painting is an art form that creates artistic representations, usually on paper, using pigments that are water soluble. You do not have to be Picasso or Matisse to have a good time and test out your artistic talent! What is Art? Community Life 3rd Thursday – 11am Activity Room

They always say that art is in the eye of the beholder. During this expressive class we will discuss and learn about various artistic outlets that range from clay sculpting and furniture designs to recyclable and food art.

Wimbledon Discovered Megan Richmond 2nd Thursday – 11am Activity Room

The first Championships of Wimbledon were held in 1877 and are still going strong and gaining momentum today! Over the next four months we will learn more about the sport of tennis and specifically the rules, competitions and famous competitors who made it a household name.

Wine & Candy Pairings Melissa Gravatt 1st Saturday – 3:15pm Brandywine Room

Everyone has a favorite candy, but did you know you can kick your sweet tooth up a notch this year by pairing your favorite candies with a glass of wine? Each month we will select a different type of candy and see which wine is the perfect partner. Additionally, we will learn more about the particular candy and the wine it is paired with.

Wordly Traditions Maria Boslego 1st Friday – 2pm Activity Room

Carnival in Brazil, Christmas in Germany, The Running of the Bull in Spain and Weddings in Italy – there is no tradition or celebrations too small or too big – it will be eye opening to see how cultures and countries around the world honor certain events!

Course Faculty Day and Time Location Yoga Victoria McGonigle 1st Tuesday -10:00am Activity Room

The word yoga means “union” in Sanskrit, the language of ancient India where yoga originated. We think of the union occurring between the mind, body and spirit. Yoga is about creating balance in the body through developing both strength and flexibility. This is done through the performance of poses and postures, each of which has specific physical benefits. Explore the inner environment of your body's energy system.

You Pick, You Move Dana Schury Wednesday – 10am Activity Room

There are so many times when an instructor led fitness class can get boring! During this class you are in charge!!! You will randomly select a form of movement and the entire class will participate. By the end of the program you will not only get a good workout in, but also have a lot of laughs along the way!

Zumba Gold Inspired Maria Boselgo Mondays -10:00am Activity Room

Zumba involves dance and aerobic movements performed to energetic music. The choreography incorporates hip-hop, soca, samba, salsa, merengue and mambo During this modified upbeat exercise program will certainly energize us for the rest of the days events!

Pathways Specific

There are a variety of programs that are focused on creating meaningful moments for our residents residing in our Pathways neighborhood. These programs are designed to meet the ability levels of all residents! In additional to fitness classes and social, below you will find some of our highlighted courses!

Course Faculty Day and Time Location Abstract Art Debbie Cook Select Saturdays – 1:30pm Program Area

It is time to use household items and try to make abstract art projects. The objective of the class is to use your creative energy and let your emotions lead you on the painting journey! Each painting will be personalized and unique.

Bird Watching 101 TBD 1st Wednesday – 1:30pm Outside Lounge

Birdwatching, or birding, is a form of wildlife observation in which the observation of birds is a recreational activity. During this class we will focus on some birds that we see fairly often in our state. From seagulls and blue jays to cardinals and hummingbirds – we will learn about these mesmerizing wildlife.

Clem Bowen – Story Teller Clem Bowen 1st & 3rd Monday – 2:00pm Lounge

Join Clem as he tells original stories and folktales from around the world. They are complimented by his use of a fascinating array of traditional and handmade instruments!

Cultural Crafting Community Life 2nd Friday – 2pm Activity Room During this hands on artistic expression class we will put our Rockland Place spin on art projects that take place throughout the world. The lanterns and mosaics to piñatas and quilts – we will explore the meaning behind some of our neighboring countries biggest art / cultural pieces.

Dump Cakes Megan Richmond 2nd Tuesday – 11am Program Area

These cake recipes are as simple as dumping all the ingredients together, and baking. It’s that easy! Top with whipped cream or a scoop of ice cream for a simple dessert. Over the next four month we will have a chance to create and taste a strawberry, blueberry, pineapple and peach dump cakes!!

Historic Photos Nayas 3rd Tuesday – 11am Program Area

We all know that there are certain famous photos that will stand the test of time – from JFK Jr. saluting his father’s casket or the infamous V-Day kiss. These famous photo will certainly spark a memory and discussion.

During this program we will learn about famous actors and actresses and the box office hits or flops that they starred in!

Scents of the Season Community Life 1st Wednesday – 11am Activity Room

We all know when a new season arrives by some of the smells. When summertime comes there is always the smell of tasty lemonade, fresh cut grass, barbeques and suntan lotion – during the program we will chat about how certain smells can spark a memory!

Sensational Smoothies Naya 2nd Tuesday – 11am Activity Room There are many nutritional benefits that go along with smoothies. There are countless ingredients that can be used in a smoothie from kale and spinach to pineapple and mango. There delicious shakes are the perfect way to get a little boost of energy with all of the nutrients that are included! Visual Mediation Dana Schury 1st Monday – 11am Program Area

Meditation and visualization are empowering tools to enhance consciousness and self-awareness and to focus the mind. Visualization is a healthy way of bringing positive energy into your mind, body and spirit, expanding your capacity for creativity. It involves a high degree of 'active' involvement from the practitioner, it is often stated to be one of the most powerful tools available to effect personal change. We will do a modified version of visual meditation to create a positive, relaxed and serene environment on an individualized basis.

Watermark University (WU) Faculty Members

Rockland Place would like to thank each of our WU faculty members for donating their time, passions and hobbies by leading a course for us this semester. It is the following individuals who help to make our dynamic and innovative program stand out and successful!

Maria Boslego Community Life assistant Maria, has worked in the health care feel for several years. In Maria’s spare time she enjoys spending time with family, being active, and also enjoys fashion! Maria is an excellent addition to our team! Bobbi Cassidy Our Resident Care Director has always been passionate about health and wellness! In her spare time she enjoys exercising and spending time with family and friends! Cassie Hall Care team member Cassie enjoy spending time with the residents and ensuring that they are engaged and happy. When not spending time with family she enjoys gardening and baking. So what a perfect way for her to share her talent in our community then by leading a baking class. Dante Iocona Dante is our Food Service Director and has been in the industry for over 20 years, he is extremely talented! Dante enjoys spending time with his family and being adventurous! Jim Kintz Jim, our maintenance director, is always busy making sure the building is in tip top shape. In his spare time he enjoys classic movies, spending time with family and always looks forward to his annual cruise vacation! Pauline Kungu Pauline is currently our Assistant Resident Care Director who oversees our Pathways area. Pauline enjoys being spontaneous, traveling to various places, spending time with friends and family and of course just having a great time!

Victoria McGonigle Victoria comes to Rockland Place on a bi-monthly basis to lead the community in physical activity routines that focus on mediation and relaxation, while strengthening the muscles in the body. Victoria works for a company called Living Wellness. It is obvious that Victoria lives a healthy lifestyle, as she participates in regular physical activity and eats nutritiously. Connie Modesti Resident, Connie, has enjoyed square dancing her whole life and fell in love with the dance style so much that she even began making outfits for local dancers. Although she is not able to dance currently her passion for Square dancing is still as bright as ever!! Kim Pepe Kim has been the business manager at Rockland Place and has been doing accounting for 30 years. Kim is a huge sports phanatic especially when it comes to the Philadelphia Phillies and Eagles. She enjoys spending time with the four wonderful men in her life. Every year Kim combines her two passions and takes a family vacation to Clearwater, Florida to attend several Philadelphia Phillies spring training games. Jen Quinones Our Executive Director, Jen, is a great addition to our team this year! In Jen’s spare time she enjoys spending time with family and friends and playing softball as well. Jen had a great outlook on life and fitness and wellness is very important to her! Megan Richmond Megan is currently the Community Life Director at Rockland Place and has been in this position for almost 5 years. Megan overseas the programming that takes place in Assisted Living, Our Place and Pathways. While earning her graduate degree in health promotion from the University of Delaware her main focus was on designing, implementing and evaluating programs for diverse populations. Megan enjoys spending time with family and friends, the beach, and traveling. Dana Schury Dana has been with Rockland Place for almost four years and she certainly has a positive impact on our community. Dana has a passion for life and she demonstrates this while leading programs. Other passions in her life include her kids, traveling and enjoying life to the fullest! As an art education major Dana certainly has the creative gene that keeps the community vibrant!

Dorene Stocker Dorene, our HR Director, has an eye for fashion and a passion for life! Whenever she has some down time she enjoys hanging out with family and friend, boating and fitness. She also sites one of her favorite travel destination as Hawaii! Joan Wagner Joan says she has been a spiritual person for all of her life. She enjoys volunteering in local community to spread the word of the Lord and share his teachings. John Williams John is an Attorney at Law, as well as an adjunct faculty member at the University of Delaware. He received is B.A from Rider University and his J.D. from Widener University School of Law. In John’s spare time he enjoys music, travel, skiing, and attending sports events. He thoroughly enjoys the discussion group at Rockland Place as he feels he gets more out of it than the residents, one can learn so much through observation of others.
