“They have much to learn fromthe passion and enthusiasm ofemerging destinations such asSri Lanka, for example, which isembracing an ambitious greeninitiative to become the world’sfirst carbon neutral destinationin the world, with public andprivate sector working together.Cooke said that he hoped thelaunch of the first internationalGreen Awards would help tochange perceptions and shift agreater emphasis on to theenvironment.

“As climate change begins toimpact, there is likely to be achange in travel flows, perhapswith more short haul, withconsumers less inclined to travellong distances”, he said. “Thiscould have a negative affect onthe poorest countries wheretourism is a life blood. That’swhy responsible tourism is oneof the greatest challengingfacing the international traveland tourism industry right now.”

The famous pink and whitebeaches of the Costa Smeraldaon Sardinia’s northern coast inItaly was awarded Europe’sLeading Beach, while the HiltonVilla Igiea Palermo Hotel inSicily was Europe’s LeadingIsland Resort and the ForteVillage Resort, just outsideCagliari in Sardinia, got Europe’sLeading Resort.
