Another integral part of Arab culture is the falcon. From what was a practice meant to supplement the Bedouins’ desert food with morsels of hare, falconry in the Middle East has evolved into a high-stakes sport. In the late 1940s, a falcon could be purchased for around US $30; by the 1960s the price had risen to some $600. Nowadays, their prices are in the thousands of dollars. In this edition, we have come up with a spread on the mystique of falconry.

Your August edition’s spread on mosques and souks gave the region a distinctive character about what it is re-ally all about

Just wrote to let Travel Arabia Magazine know that I very much enjoy reading My Travel Bag and other similar sec-tions about first-person’s account of one’s holiday trips.

Boracay or bustDear Editor,

I have been to Boracay in the central Philippines before and really enjoyed every bit of it—beach party, marine sports to name a few.

Reading your August edition gave me just one more good reason to once again visit the place: Fridays.

“Breath-taking sunsets, powdery sand between your toes, crystal-clear water, and a gentle breeze… the recipe for whatever vacation one may need in paradise,” as you wrote it.

I’ll check it out myself and maybe send you photos too.

Centro Sharjah: A stylish and affordable place to stay

The hotel is designed for today’s smart traveller – those who are on an affordable budget but does not want to compromise on style and quality.

One English idiom says “don’t judge a book by its cover”. It means one shouldn’t prejudge the worth or value of something by its outward appearance alone! In the case of Centro Sharjah, the newly opened airport hotel from the Rotana brand, this idiom clearly applies to the property.

Uniquely located adjacent to Sharjah International Airport, any unsuspecting traveller would think that Centro Sharjah is just another airport hotel. But once you enter the lobby, you will admire the stylish and elegant concept of the hotel. True to its claim – Centro Sharjah is for today’s smart traveller – those who are on an affordable budget but does not want to compromise on style and quality.

“Centro Sharjah is an affordable and stylish hotel. I would not classify it as a budget hotel because it is very modern and technologically, it’s quite advanced from the properties in this area. It’s not a budget hotel but certainly affordable,” starts Mr. David Jamieson, General Man-ager.

Centro Sharjah opened in June 2011 but is already creating a niche in the market with corporate clients, guests from the GCC and the UAE as the top three market sources. Travellers from the USA

topped the international segment but the property is now heavily promoting in the CIS markets, Germany and the UK.

“Our key unique selling points are the fresh and modern facilities, the extensive garden and landscape and our great food. Our hotel will not be out of place even if you place it in Dubai because of our modern facilities. The property sits on an extensive piece of land so we have a nice garden area with great. Another strong point is our F&B. We have a great F&B product and we get excellent reviews for our breakfast and our lunch and dinner buffet are also doing very well,” adds Mr. Jamieson.

Comprises of 306 rooms and suites, every bedroom is meticulously designed to maximise space, light and efficiency. The room size is small compared to other hotels so not to charge guests with large price. “We built it with the modern traveller in mind. We want to give them a comfortable yet stylish stay.”

Dining options include c.taste, located at the center of the hotel which has a lively atmosphere. The all day dining restaurant offers buffet for breakfast, lunch and din-ner. c.deli is a 24-hour take away dining concept which allows guests to enjoy great

food and drinks in addition to purchase of any items they may need during their stay. Crew Lounge is a special private area for cabin crew (the property has tie-ups with several airlines).

Centro Sharjah is looking forward to the coming winter season with the prop-erty looking at making a mark in the in-ternational leisure market. “I am forecast-ing that it would be a great season. In the coming months we will run around 70 to 80 percent occupancy. We are a relatively new brand but I think in the year 2012 the hotel will start to perform very well or maybe outperform some properties that are already established in Sharjah.”

Centro Sharjah has a lot more to offer. It may be located near the airport but it is not your typical airport hotel. “If you are looking for accommodation that is mod-ern, clean and has a very friendly environ-ment at affordable price, Centro Sharjah is the place! Inside Centro Sharjah, we have a lot to offer!” concludes Mr. Jamieson.

Cover Story

Page 18: Travel Arabia-Russian Supplement

It was in these beaches, with its grains of shifting sand, that history was written. Great biblical figures, Moses, Jesus, and the disciples,

among them, did much of their story on beaches in this area.

Indeed, the Arabian Beaches’ past is probably among main reasons why holiday makers keep coming back for more fun.

TurkeyTurkey’s beaches are best around May

to October, though the water is still a little chilly up to June. They are often pebbly or have hot sand so swimming shoes are useful.

Turkish beaches, actually, Mediterra-nean beaches for that matter, are not truly comparable with those of the Caribbean or Pacific. The water is cooler and the sand generally coarser, or frequently peb-bles. Pretty, shady, palm tree fringes are also rare, though hot sunshine, friendly locals and low prices are almost guaran-teed. Going topless is not a problem.

Kemer is a real jewel in the Mediter-ranean crown - and has only recently been discovered by tourists.

Despite the modernisation that has taken place in Kemer in recent years, the beaches here have been given the Blue Flag Award for their cleanliness.

The two beaches here - a pebbly one and a sandy one - both offer different kinds of watersports.

Southwest of Antalya, Kemer’s coast-line stretches for over fifty kilometres. It is an important tourist resort with lots to offer, not least its beaches, clear seas and three 300 days of sunshine each year.

Kemer is a relatively new town, clean and well-planned. Not long ago, it was just a small village, with a small harbour and a few scattered houses. Although despite its newfound popularity, it has retained its charm, especially Old Kemer, with its old houses and long-established locals.

There’s a beautiful marina with a yacht club, restaurant and a theatre, and the area is becoming popular with yachters from far and wide.

Historic, dramatic, holy, warm and inexpensive—now who could ask for more?

Kemer in Turkey

Aqaba, Jordan

Something that attracts expats in large numbers to Kemer is its year-round living. Kemer’s beaches attract holidaymakers from all around the world during the summer, and in winter skiers flock to the area to experience the superb skiing in the nearby mountains.

A couple of Kemer’s beaches are pure sand; however, the majority are pebbly. Nature lovers will love the unspoilt natural surroundings, such as the small bays, the green pine forests, the orange and lemon groves, the picturesque backdrop of the Taurus Mountains and the magnificent views.

Meanwhile, rated as the best beach in the world by some is the Patara Beach. It is 14.2 kms/9miles long, the longest beach in the Mediterranean, of child-friendly shore with its medium grain brown sand, backed only by ancient ruins and swoop-ing dunes, with no buildings visible save a small café at one end.

Another popular spot is Olu Deniz, a picturesque resort area, especially the main hillside town of Belcekiz, which has crystal clear water, and a long shingle beach curving away from the town prom-enade along to a calm blue lagoon. In ad-dition to good value hotels - usually with pools - in Olu Deniz town, there are some popular resort villages nearby, such as Ovacik and Hisaronu, which means that the beach can get overcrowded.

The promenade by the town has plenty of bars, restaurants and cafés and there are loads of umbrellas and loungers for hire, and a wide range of water sports available. paragliding and hand gliding, solo or tandem, off adjacent Babadag mountain and landing on the beach are extremely popular, as is scuba diving. Locals claim the season is all year round. Summer temperature averages 32C, winter 20C.

Egypt Despite Egypt’s ancient allure, today

the country probably attracts more beach vacationers than any other type of tour-ists. This is because, for many Europeans, the warm Egyptian beaches are both inexpensive and well appointed.

Depending on how one looks at it, Egypt can be said to have as many as seven beach zones. These consist of the Mediter-ranean beaches along the mainline coast from the Suez Canal over to Libya, the Mediterranean beaches along the northern Sinai, the Sinai coast along the gulf of Aqaba, the Sinai coast along the Gulf of

Suez, the southern Sinai region which opens onto the Red Sea, the mainland coast along the Gulf of Suez and the main-land coast south of that along the Red Sea. Each of these areas vary either somewhat, or extensively from the others. Obviously the biggest differences are between the Mediterranean coast and all of the other regions that connect with the Red Sea. Some of these regions attract extensive tourism, while others are almost void of tourists. Some attract very specific tour-ists, while others are more generalized.

Activities such as snorkeling can be found at almost all beach areas. Further-more, other activities such as windsurfing and skiing, while available in many dif-ferent locations, seem to be very popular along the mainland Gulf of Suez Zone. At various locations on just about all of the beaches there are other water sports available, such as sail boat rentals and parasailing.

Meantime, famous for glistening Red Sea waters, breathtaking views of Mount Sinai and incredible sand dunes, Sharm el Sheikh offers a vibrant holiday atmo-sphere, luxurious hotels, restaurants and fantastic facilities and things to do, with the added excitement of desert adventure. As one of the most popular locations in the Red Sea Riviera, holidays in Sharm El Sheikh boast beautiful white sandy beaches, crystal blue seas and arguably the best water sports in the world. The breath-taking coral reefs of the Ras Mohammed National Park are a dream for divers and snorkelers and their beauty entices de-lighted holidaymakers back year after year. Remember you will need to gain a visa at

the airport on arrival if you plan to leave the main resort, even to visit Ras Moham-med. Visa’s are around £13pp and cannot be purchased outside of the airport.

In addition to incredible natural beauty, Sharm el Sheikh holidays also offer great nightlife as Sharm is home to mul-tiple bars and superclubs including Pacha.

The climate in Sharm el Sheikh is hot and dry, with sizzling summers peaking at around 45ºC and winters generally averag-ing in the pleasant 20s. Sharm el Sheikh holidays are popular with scuba divers due to its beautiful coral reef and large number of diving schools.

Sharm el Sheikh provides an ideal holiday destination for the family. The majority of hotels have their own excellent swimming pools, themed parks, daytime activities such as tennis courts, beach volleyball and diving centres and fun kids club to keep your children entertained throughout their holiday.

Beach at Al Hoceima Morocco

Morocco Bordered by the Mediterranean Sea

and the Atlantic Ocean, Morocco has several thousand kilometers of coast whose landscapes are diverse and beaches welcoming.

The most visited beaches are naturally located not far from cities, especially on the Atlantic coast. But there are hun-dreds of others in places where nature has remained unspoilt. They all make it possible to sample the joys of swimming, relaxing and the latest water sports. On the Atlantic coast, the great majority of beaches appear as long strips of fine sand lapped by the ocean waves. They will be hotter the further south you go until you reach the sublime Dakhla Bay. The north-east trade wind blows regularly from the end of March to mid-September on this corner of the coast: ideal conditions for practicing all board sports, especially surf-ing. Whether you’re a fan of windsurfing, kitesurfing, surfing, wakeboarding or jet

skiing, you can sure you will find the right waves here.

On the more divided upcoast of the Mediterranean, between Tangier and Al Hoceima, the sea is warm and calm and the beaches more intimate. Some are close to small traditional fishing villages, tucked into corners of idyllic nature. At the same time, new seaside resorts are springing up such as Tamuda Bay, on the outskirts of Tétouan and Saidia, which is a new Medi-terranean coast resort. Facing Andalusia, Mediterrania-Saida extends over 1700 acres with a 6km seafront of white sand. A pleasure port and an 18-hole golf course complete this site which has been devel-oped next to two international airports.

Sunseekers, especially in the winter go to Agadir. There’s warm weather from March to October, and sunshine even in January, when it’s typically 68F during the day, though colder at night. Agadir’s clientele tends to be mature, but surfers also flock, not to Agadir’s main strand, but to less developed beaches such as Taghazoute, 11 miles north and served by local buses.

Even if you stay on the beach, there’s plenty to keep you occupied in the form of water sports like wet-biking and para-scending. In town, there’s a miniature zoo called the Valley of the Birds, or you can climb up to the kasbah (old citadel), on a hill to the north, for great views over the city.

There are direct charter flights from Britain to Agadir’s Al Massira airport, a 15-mile taxi ride from town. Otherwise, fly to Marrakesh and charter a grand taxi, which should cost around £40, though you’d need to haggle for that.

Jordan Jordan’s Red Sea coast extends only

27 kms - as opposed to Egypt, with a coastline of 1840 kms. Still, there is a good choice of public beaches and private beach clubs.

So if you look for a spot to chill out after or in between your excursions to Wadi Rum, Petra and other exciting inland destinations you will, so to speak, find your place under the sun!

The private beaches belong to hotels, where you have to pay an entry fee to use the facilities. Some of the five-star hotels offer monthly and yearly membership packages as well for expats and residents of Aqaba.

Public Beaches are located on the

South Coast, ten minutes drive from the downtown. They belong to and are man-aged by the Aqaba Marine Park.

The only public beach inside the city is Al-Hafayer Beach or Al-Ghandoor Beach (it is also called “Palm Beach” recently), stretching between the Big Flag and the Royal Yacht Club.

Despite the name, this beach is not really recommended for Western tour-ist - especially women - for swimming, only kids and some locals (women in full costume) go into the water.

Glass bottom boats are picking up passengers from here, if you fancy a cruise.

UAEAmong the interesting beaches in the

UAE is Jumeirah in Dubai. There is no topless sunbathing or nudity allowed on any beach in Dubai and Jumeirah Beach is no exception. There are many public beaches along the strip and most believe Jumeirah Beach and Beach Park are the best. Currently the cost to get in the Beach Park is AED 5 or £1, a small fee for such fun and sun. Monday’s are set aside for women and children only. Full of culture, this long strip of sand in Dubai is peaceful and elegant.

Unlike many places in the world, you won’t find peddlers on the beach. The beach area near the Marina Beach Resort has full showers and many places to eat close to the beach area. The summer can bring very hot temperatures to the area so remember if you don’t have your own transportation, that walking to the main road from the ocean can take a good 5 minutes. The best months to visit Jumei-rah Beach are during the winter when temperatures are cool enough to make it enjoyable. Tourist still come in the sum-mer, but only walk the beaches at night when the air is cooler.

The water around Jumeirah Beach is pretty shallow which makes it nice for small children. Lifeguards are on duty along the strand. Find water sports facilities near the hotels. There are jet skis and floats, umbrellas for shade and other amenities. Ask your hotel before you head down there what are the best options. They can be of great help for anything in the area.

Waves do kick up along this beach, but only when there is a good wind. Busiest days are Thursdays and Fridays. By law, Dubai beaches are alcohol free and you won’t find bars nearby.

Whistle Stop

Forgive me if you read this and think it is a little biased; however, even if I wasn’t married to a Turk I would still feel as passionate

about a country that has such a cosmo-politan and energetic city such as Istan-bul, a rich and dominant history which stretches back centuries (this is where I have to refer to my wife for further infor-mation.) and a coastline which is a truly stunning marine experience.

Firstly Istanbul, often seen as the

capital of Turkey and certainly the larg-est, it is the only city in the world which extends across two continents, so you can physically move from Europe to Asia by means of crossing the glorious Bosphorus by boat or above along the large suspen-sion bridge by car. There is a foot bridge alongside the busy road; however, I have yet to stand with each foot in two conti-nents.

This vibrant city has so much to offer, among them the historic landmarks of

Hagia Sophia (meaning Holy Wisdom) which was initially an Orthodox Church, then a mosque and today stands proudly as a museum, a must-see for any tourist! And also the Basilicia Cistern a few yards away which is a “Sunken Palace” – damp, dark yet a truly eerie experience worth visiting. Topkapı Palace is a must along with Sultan Ahmed Mosque (commonly referred to as the Blue Mosque) and if you get the chance to pop across to the car-less Prince’s Islands, then a gentle trot

around in a horse drawn cart is always a charming way to see more of Turkey.

However, to visit the capital (Ankara) and walk around the splendid grounds of Anitkabir, the Memorial of Atatürk, kind

of takes you to the heart and soul of Tur-key and the modern day, secular country that it is. Although as a city it doesn’t bear the same striking typography as Istanbul; for the tourist seeking a cultural,

less “touristy” city, Ankara is a two-day stop on any Turkish tour.

For the south of Turkey, the coast line along the Mediterranean is fabulous; it’s amazingly blue sea with rocky coastline is

peppered with old classic boats (known as Gulets) which are full of locals and holiday-makers alike. The tranquility and assorted views throughout each day whilst on a cruise provide a haven for a relaxing holiday (granted read-ing “Bravo-Two-Zero”, a Special Forces torture story “to relax” wasn’t the best idea at the time). But suffice to say for a family getaway the Blue Cruise from Gocek to Fethiye is a remarkable way to enjoy a week’s vacation.

I cannot not talk enough about the Black Sea – an area where my wife was born – famed for its traditional dance, hazelnuts and fishing, the city of Ordu is a tranquil place surrounded by the

mountains and sea, which is crystal clear despite its name. Producing 95% of the world’s hazelnuts that we happily eat in the likes of Ferraro Roche, it has a vibrant, sociable and caring community which is slowly positioning itself towards the tourist market with a new sky-lift over the city centre and up the Boztepe mountain and with the opening of an airport in 2014.

On a final note, if you are visiting Turkey you will see, more than anywhere else I believe, the blue symbol for the Evil Eye or “Nazar Boncugu” – which is dis-played at homes and offices or pinned to

one’s self to reflect any thoughts of ill will from others. These emblems of “karma protection” are a great keepsake following your visit and I have to say seem to work rather well.

I hope that my account of Turkey hasn’t been too biased knowing my wife will read this. But to sum up, Turkey is a beautiful and diverse country, steeped in history and has something for everyone from city breaks to coastline escapes – simply click on www.goturkey.com to explore a lot more!

Happy travels!

A hotel apartment is a serviced apart-ment complex that uses a hotel-style booking system. It is similar to renting an apartment.

While UAE is blessed with many hotel options from the downright luxurious to the basic budget property, many travellers are now opting for hotel apartments as an attractive accommodation alternative.

Hotel apartments are popular among

relocating expatriates whilst they find a more permanent solution and, with UAE continuing to attract many singles and families looking to make the city their home, serviced apartments continue to grow in popularity.

They are also increasingly in demand for families, particularly those from the GCC, because of the space and the secu-rity these facilities provide.

Apartment hotels were first created in holiday destinations as accommoda-tion for families that needed to ‘live’ in an apartment rather than ‘stay’ as they would in a hotel. The apartments would provide a ‘holiday home’ but generally be serviced. Later on these apartments evolved to be complete homes, allowing occupants to do everything they would at home, such as cleaning, washing and

cooking. Apartment hotels are flexible types

of accommodation; instead of the rigid format of a hotel room, an apartment hotel complex usually offers a complete fully fitted apartment. These complexes are usually custom built, and similar to a hotel complex containing a varied amount of apartments. The length of stay in these apartment hotels is varied with anywhere from a few days to months or even years. The people that stay in apartment hotels use them as a home away from home, therefore they are usually fitted with everything the average home would require.

Another attraction of apartment hotels is cost-effectiveness. Not only are rates often lower on average than hotel rooms, particularly for long term arrangements, but additional costs such as restaurant bills and beverage bills are considerably reduced because hotel apartments come with fully equipped kitchens allowing guests to prepare their own meals rather than being forced to go out to restaurants.

Guests also have access to all the benefits that come with hotel stays such as laundry service, 24 hour security and a daily housekeeping service. And apart-ments that are part of a hotel complex mean guests get to enjoy 5-star privi-leges such as the health club, spa and restaurants – often with discounts for long-term residents.

Chronicles

Why Sri Lanka? A question we have often been asked by friends and family before we left. Although to us the answer seemed fairly easy, most people associate Sri Lanka only with elephants and tea. Living in Dubai you often seek for little getaways to escape from the stress of the big city.

The country caters to every traveller’s individual need. Especially when in 2009, after 30 years, the civil war came to an end. Nowadays Sri Lanka is wide open for 21st century explorers. The island rewards its tourists with a rich culture, beautiful mountains, thick jungles and an incred-ible flora and fauna.

Furthermore and extremely impor-tant to us, were the long white sandy beaches, fresh seafood and coconuts in hand. The destination we chose is Uppu-veli on the eastern coast of this magnifi-cent island. In previous years, tourism in the city had suffered from the civil war. The proximity to the former frontline made it a difficult journey for travellers. Even these days you still pass many army bases along the way.

However, once you get off the dusty roads and your feet touch the incredible white sand of Uppuveli Beach, all that trouble seems somehow forgotten. It is true that Uppuveli is not yet as developed as maybe well known Hikkaduwa or Galle but for us this added much to its charm.

Walking along the coast, we found many different options to stay. As tour-ism is developing rapidly these days, you find everything from shabby bungalows

to five-star hotels. Since both of us work in high-end five-star hotels in Dubai; the first option seemed to us as the most accurate. Both looking for a change from the lifestyle in Dubai, we could not resist but checking into a 30 Dirham per night bungalow (without AC).

Had we known we would share our accommodation with lizards, mosqui-toes and the occasional dog our choice might have been different. The mosquito net proving itself to be more protective against fresh air than the mosquitoes we have to admit we’ve spent better nights before.

Nonetheless the sleek sea and the con-stant fresh breeze helped us forget about our “roommates.” Despite hanging lazy by the beach in a hammock, listening to the wind shaking the coconut palms and enjoying the clear sea with a cold drink, Uppaveli offers more. For travellers who hunt for some action, all kinds of water sports are offered. However, my pick is an organized dolphin and whale watch-ing tour. Seeing this peaceful giants glide through the sea is an experience you will never forget.

We could sheer write endless about the beauty of this island formerly known as Ceylon and its warm and friendly in-habitants. We can both say we fell in love with Sri Lanka and our return will just be a matter of our next vacation approved.

We believe it is time for you to pack your bags and set sails to this jewel in the Indian Ocean and discover that Sri Lanka is more than just elephants and tea.

More than just elephants and teaSri Lanka is wide open for 21st century explorers

that captures the heart and soul of the places you visit by participating in a ter-rific new five-day Gulf Photo Plus “Faces & Places” photo tour of Istanbul, Turkey. The tour will be hosted by visiting inter-national photography gurus Bobbi Lane and David Nightingale, 8 – 12 November, 2011.

“Faces & Places” was first introduced to the Middle East photography event calendar earlier this year with a sell-out trip to Oman.

“We received tremendous feedback on the first photo tour to Muscat. The interest in other destinations in the region was overwhelming, so we decided to push ahead and take Faces & Places to Istan-bul,” says Mohamed Somji, Director, Gulf Photo Plus.

“The photo tours offer a wonderful opportunity for keen photographers to combine a holiday with a learning experi-ence designed to refine their existing skills with expert guidance, develop new tech-niques based on critiques and feedback from Bobbi and David.”

Sounds good? Imagine yourself on the shores of the Bosphorous discovering

an 8,000-year-old city from the Byzan-tine and Ottoman Era; a place of natu-ral beauty, diverse cityscapes, stunning palaces, grand mosques and countless museums. Istanbul offers photographers endless inspiration.

The photo tour, while easy and fun, is a fully planned and scheduled travel photography trip including portraits, street scenes, landscape and night photog-raphy with instructions from world-class instructors to improve shooting, composi-tion and observation techniques.

The instructors are regulars in Dubai, having been involved with Gulf Photo Plus for several years. Lane is a commer-

cial photographer specializing in creative portraits in studio and on location. She is a dedicated photo-educator and brings more than 30 years of technical experience and innovative artistic interpretation to her fun-filled workshops. Nightingale is a published author and creative director of Chromasia Limited - a fine arts and commercial photography company. He believes in the intelligent application of photo enhancing techniques. His students benefit from his discerning eye and critical

judgment of what is needed to improve an image.

“We want the participants to be able to tell a story through their photogra-phy and learn tips and tricks to get that postcard-perfect best shot and that’s where the instructors come in. They’ll

encourage individuals to get out of their comfort zone and try something new, to look at composition in a different way, and explore creativity,” says Mohamed.

Each participant in the Gulf Photo Plus Faces & Places Istanbul photo tour is guaranteed to come away with a varied portfolio of shots, comprising street photography, incredible landscapes and expressive portraits taken at locations including Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque, Grand Bazaar, Spice Bazaar, Galata Tower, Topkapi Palace and Beyoglu Istiklal Street. Students will be encour-aged to complete their learning experience with the valuable exercise of producing a photo essay of their trip to Istanbul, which will later be exhibited by Gulf Photo Plus.

The workshop tour is ideal for confident beginners and more advanced photographers.

Not sure what you’d need to par-ticipate? scaping from the heat of the Middle East during the summer without breaking the bank is a challenging affair, but our 5

night trip to Kenya satisfied the require-ments of affordability, reasonable flying times and pleasing for both adults and teenagers. Not an easy combination to arrange.

Kenya Airways had been promoting a variety of holidays but easily adapted the tours to our requirements, with arrange-ments and booking proving to be surpris-ingly simple and hassle free. Delivery was exactly as they promised – absolutely amazing!

Day 1 & 2An overnight flight on Kenya Airways

brought us to Jomo Kenyatta Interna-tional Airport in Nairobi at 6.40am where we met our driver/guide, Jonathan, and immediately set off on our first adven-ture. Our first two nights were to be at Samburu National Reserve, a 7 hour drive from Nairobi. Extremely tiring after a night flight but the scenery and frequent stops along the way broke up the journey.

Transportation was a converted minibus, specially fitted to withstand the rough Kenyan roads, complete with a sun roof, raised during safari drives to allow for better viewing. Whilst it was not the most luxurious transportation, it proved to be very comfortable, reliable and better still – all ours! Jonathan, was well spoken, informative and extremely knowledge-able. My (selfish) objective for booking a

trip like this was to entertain my 13-year old son without having to worry about anything myself. This proved to be true as Jonathan took over, guiding us through the entire trip without me having to think at all.

Our first stop was a photo opportu-nity as we crossed the Equator and rest stops for a much needed stretch of the legs were always accompanied by the opportunity to buy refreshments and souvenirs. Arriving at Samburu Lodge in time for a late lunch, we had barely an hour to refresh before our first game drive through the reserve.

Accommodation at Samburu Lodge is in a wooden & brick building, overlook-ing the river. We were warned to keep the balcony door locked as the monkeys were

mischievous and liked visiting the rooms. Personally, with the crocodiles sunning themselves on the river bank, a mere few metres from the walkway, I was grateful to be on the upper floor for our first night in Kenya! There was, however, no real danger – a security guard accompanied us back to our room in the dark, armed with flashlight and stick to ward off any ad-venturous nightlife, and we slept soundly under our mosquito netting.

Mealtimes were entertaining, with

staff dressed in their traditional tribes-men attire, scaring off inquisitive monkeys with catapults, Eland wander-ing around looking for grass, and the cute small-spotted Genet cat that waited hungrily for scraps.

Samburu National Reserve is home to four unique species found predomi-nantly in that area – the gerenuk, reticu-lated giraffe, Beisa oryx and grevy’s zebra. Lions, cheetah, leopard, elephants, ostrich and all manner of bird life can also be seen here. Dusty, dry and with sparse vegetation, spotting the rare cheetah and leopard is easier here than elsewhere – and we were not disappointed.

Day 3After 2 nights and 3 game drives in

Samburu, another early start and a 6 hour drive took us through the Rift Valley to Lake Nakuru National Park where we stayed at Flamingo Hill Camp – a luxuri-ous tented camp. Flamingo Hill Camp was picturesque with great food, and our only regret was having just one night here.

Lake Nakuru National Park is home to the famous flamingos that form a pink hue across the lake, and white rhino which are not white after all, but so named after the Dutch tried calling them ‘wide rhino’ for their large mouth, and were misunderstood! Lake Nakuru can be viewed in one game drive, unless you are an avid bird watcher. Giraffe, monkeys and buffalo were also plentiful.

Day 4 & 5Back through the Rift Valley and yet

another long dusty 6-hour drive to Masai Mara National Reserve – the highlight

of our trip. The last two hours of the drive were particularly rough as the road disappeared altogether. For anyone not able to withstand such a bone shaking drive, I highly recommend that you take the short flight from Nairobi to the Masai Mara and save yourself some time!

The Mara Leisure Camp was our only disappointment, with acceptable accom-modation in tented rooms but without any outside seating or lounge/bar in which to while away the hours between game drives. Food was less exciting than previous lodges, but nonetheless perfectly edible.

The game drives dispelled any disap-pointment and the Masai Mara is a ‘must see’. July is the peak of the wildebeest migration – thousands of the creatures spread over the plains like a blanket, interspersed with hundreds of zebra. The sunrise hot air balloon ride over the plains, culminating in a bubbly breakfast in the savannah grassland is a must! A breathtaking experience and well worth the early rise.

Here we saw our first male lions, pos-ing for the camera, elephant, rhino, chee-tah, hyena, buffalo, eland, topi, and many more besides. An absolutely amazing experience that captivated the attention and imagination of even the grumpy ‘up to early’ teenager!

Our final experience was immediately prior to departure from Nairobi: lunch at Carnivore Restaurant. A haven for meat eaters, the food just keeps on coming – we ate our way through ostrich, croco-dile, chicken, beef, turkey, bull testicles, various sausages and livers as well as an assortment of salads and dressings.

When planning a safari, there are some points to consider

Nights are cool, and days warm, so don’t forget a jacket as well as the sun-screen. Anti Malarial tablets are recommended, but not required

There is a lot of driving involved. Some of it on very rough roads. Be pre-pared! Game drives take place mornings from around sunrise and evenings from around 4pm until dark, and last about 3 hours. The time in between is your own to relax.

There are no guarantees that you will see every animal – these are reserves, which means no fences, so animals roam freely and come and go at will

Take US$ and change them at the airport on arrival. Keep small US$ notes for tips. On our package, everything was included except drinks and tips. Keep enough cash – the credit card machines don’t always work

Everyone has to complete immigration forms on arrival at Nairobi Interna-tional Airport – this involves payment for visas, photos, fingerprinting, and long lines. Patience is required!

The Samburu National Reserve is located on the banks of the Ewaso Ng’iro river in Kenya; It is 165 km² in size and 350 kilometers from Nairobi and ranges in altitude from 800 to 1230m above sea level.

The Samburu National Reserve was one of the two areas in which conservationists George Adamson and Joy Adamson raised Elsa the Lioness made famous in the bestsell-ing book and award winning movie Born Free.

The Samburu National Reserve is also the home of Kamunyak, a lioness famous for adopting oryx calves.

Lake Nakuru is one of the Rift Valley soda lakes at an elevation of 1754 m above sea level. It lies in the rift valley of Kenya and is protected by Lake Nakuru National Park.

The Masai Mara is a large game reserve in south-western Kenya, which is effectively the northern continuation of the Serengeti National Park game reserve in Tan-zania. It is famous for its exceptional population of Big Cats, game, and the annual migration of zebra, Thomson’s gazelle, and wildebeest from the Serengeti every year from July to October, a migration so immense that it is called the Great Migration.

Countless destinations within a destinationIndia:Enjoy India through journeys in super luxury trains and live in royal splendour at several heritage and palace hotels where you can relax and indulge like the affluent maharajas of yore!

India is a vast country with a history that goes back five thousand years. Consisting of 28 states and seven union territories, each India state is a

destination of its own. Thus, tourists from all over the world flood the country each year because it has so much to offer in the way of fascinating and attractive tour-ist spots that are rich in history, culture, heritage, and people. In 2010, the country recorded visitor arrivals of 5.58 million, an increase of 9.3 per cent from the 5.1 million visitors recorded in 2009.

This year, India has set a target to reach eight to 10 per cent increase in tour-ist arrivals. It is an ambitious target but due to recent changes in the world’s politi-cal and economic situation, the country is optimistic to achieve its goal.

“Some countries now are experiencing difficult times and are no longer condu-cive for tourism so visitors are veering away from these places. India is a safe

destination and it offers a lot of things to travellers. If you go to India, I can give you the desert, the snow, the forest, jungle, museum, beaches, wildlife, shopping, folklore, modern facilities and a lot more. We are a thousand destinations within one destination so we are trying our best to reach the target. In fact, in the month of June, we already recorded a growth of seven per cent,” starts Mr. Vikas Rustagi, Regional Director, West Asia and Africa of India Tourism Dubai.

Though it is difficult to identify how many of these visitors originate from the region, Mr. Rustagi confirmed India is fast becoming a favourite destination of the Middle East market. “The Middle East market mostly goes to the big cities and majority of them go to Mumbai, Goa, Kerala, Hyderabad and into the moun-tains and hill stations. They are looking for greenery, mountains and cold areas so these areas are emerging very well. On the

other hand, the younger people seek new adventure so they go to the north part of India such as Pradesh and Kashmir where they want to experience the lakes and the house boats.”

Mr. Rustagi adds that the months of October till March are the perfect period to visit and explore India because of the cool weather. But this year, they are keen on promoting the luxury trains, the new concept of heritage and palace hotels including medical tourism, the hill sta-tions where you can experience rain and monsoon, holistic and wellness tourism.

Travel like a MaharajahFor a different kind of experience,

enjoy India through journeys in super luxury tourist trains. Many years ago, In-dia’s states were ruled by kings who built their own railways. After India declared its independence, a few states have converted the royal coaches to luxury trains where

one can relax, enjoy and indulge like the affluent maharajas of yore.

“Experience the best of hospitality onboard a train. Enjoy the best cuisine, the best service and facilities, sightsee-ing including wildlife, spiritual, forts and palaces. The train travels at night so when you wake up in the morning you are in a new place to explore and experience,” explains Mr. Rustagi.

One of the oldest of these luxury trains is The Palace on Wheels which you can take to travel to Rajasthan. Exuber-ance and extravagance are the key words to this royal journey where you experience first-hand the lavish lifestyles of the Indian kings. The décor, food and hospitality speak of sheer luxury and opulence.

The Deccan Odyssey is much more than a mere luxury train cruise. It is

a classical odyssey of time beyond the realms of the present. The weeklong Dec-can Odyssey tour includes several exotic destinations covering the vast expanse of Maharashtra and a pinch of Goa. On the itinerary will be visits to forts, historical places, museums, beaches and boat rides in the backwaters.

The Golden Chariot is India’s newest addition to its luxury trains. In its voyage, it links some of South India’s greatest destinations trundling through spectacu-lar locales, recapturing the romance of a by-gone era making your sojourn an un-forgettable one. Named after the famous Stone Chariot in Hampi, a World Heritage Site in South India, The Golden Chariot conveys you in luxurious comfort on voy-ages through time and exotic South Indian locales. On these journeys, it unravels for you both eras hidden behind time’s veil and the splendours of the present day.

If you have some time to spare, Mr. Rustagi recommends to take a slow toy train up to the hill resort of Shimla, Ooty (Udhagamandalam), Darjeeling or Matheran. There is nothing to match the experience of chugging up the hills, past little hamlets and terraced fields, mak-ing your way through tunnels and over breathtaking bridges. Its leisurely pace offers you a panoramic view of chang-ing vistas. The invigorating air and the delights of scenic hill resort provide a wel-come respite from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Heritage HotelsExperience another facet of the great

Indian tourism by living in royal splen-dour. The Heritage hotel scheme is a

new concept introduced in India where

royal residences have been transformed

to provide accommodation for tourists

while preserving the glorious traditions.

Centuries-old palaces/forts/havelis were

Munnar Kerala. Houseboat Dal Lake, Srinagar Kashmir.

“Any tourist going to India is like going to his or her own home. You should not worry. Enjoy and relax because this is the time to savor the pleasures offered by such a very inter-esting place like India,” concludes Mr. Rustagi.

Whether you are a first timer or a repeat visitor to India, the following tips will help make your stay enjoyable and memorable.• Becomfortable.InIndiayouwillnot have any problem in communica-tion because majority of the people speak English.• Relax.TheIndianpeopleareveryfriendly so you will feel at ease.• Becarefulwithfoodandwater.During the first two days of your stay, drink mineral water because the body needs to adjust to the climate in India. After that you can eat everything.• Maintaindecorumandrespect.India is a democratic and liberal country but if you go a religious place or a temple, show respect by taking off your shoes or if you meet an elderly, you can shake hands or bow your head.• Focusontheplacesthatcatchyourinterest so that you can make the most out of your time in India.

converted into hotels with modern day facilities so guests enjoy the taste of being a maharaja, being served like a king or ex-periencing history at such close quarters.

“We have many palaces in India and we converted these palaces into hotels. But it’s not an ordinary palace. The building should be constructed prior to 1950s and should be very old. It has to remain in its original condition and has to be restored but not modified,” explains Mr. Rustagi.

Many of these palaces required years of restoration, reconstruction and renova-tion to make them suitable for interna-tional tourists. Today the royal families invite you to their abodes as guests. Each of the Heritage Hotels in India is an ancestral home with a rich history. The uniqueness of each Heritage Hotel exists because of the memories of olden times, timeless traditions and the local legends. The warmth of the hospitable hosts and the charm of the royal ambience when put together form the basis of the most blissful holiday you would have had in your lifetime.

“When you checked in to a heritage hotel you will see the staff wearing the same type of clothes worn during the days when they serve the kings. The hotels have the same decorations and because the rajahs used to live there you will experi-ence first-hand how they lived. You can go to his library, to his seating room, to his bar and his bathroom. It’s more of reliving history. You travel back in time!” says Mr. Rustagi.

Palace HotelsAnother new scheme in India that is

worth visiting is the Palace Hotels – hotels that are constructed into palaces. “Staying at a palace hotel will give you the palace experience in the tradition of India but they are not old. These hotels are listed as

top leading hotels in the world because they are unique and reflect the Indian hospitality and warmth,” adds Mr. Rustagi.

The Maharajas in India have left a royal legacy with their palaces and residences still holding on to the glory. From the sunny courtyards to the open air verandahs, from the spacious rooms to the beautifully manicured gardens, everything about the palace seems to speak of a his-tory of royalty and grandeur.

Pomegranates and Myrrh, one of the most original, powerful and internationally acclaimed Palestinian films of recent years, will return to the UAE for a special theatrical run in September, the Dubai Inter-national Film Festival said.

Part romance, part drama and part political comment, the film, directed by Najwa Najjar, made its world premiere at DIFF 2008 before going on to successes and rave reviews at the Sundance, Rotterdam, Edinburgh, Durban, Locarno, Berlin, Cannes and other global festivals in addition to special screenings across the United States.

It will screen in the UAE as part of the DIFF’s year-round support of quality independent Arab cinema. In Dubai, the film will screen from September 1 to 14 at The Picturehouse, the dedicated arthouse cinema in Reel Cinemas, Dubai Mall; and at Vox Cinemas, Marina Mall Abu Dhabi from September 15 to 28. The film is distributed by Founoon Film Distribution.

Set in Ramallah this decade, Pomegranates and Myrrh narrates the story of a dancer whose husband is imprisoned after defending her from an attack by a settler. In his absence and faced with the threat of land confiscation, she seeks to regain her lifelong love of dance – and in so doing meets a Palestinian returnee and choreographer. The film stars veterans of Arab cinema Hiam Abbas, Yassmine Al Massri, Ali Suleiman and Ashraf Farah.

The ninth Abu Dhabi International Hunting and Equestrian Exhibition prom-ises to be the most exciting and biggest so far, with a variety of competitions to be held, among them, that on the most beau-tiful and largest mixed-bred falcons, which has been held every year and has gained international fame, winning the apprecia-tion of regional and international bodies safeguarding heritage and protecting the environment.

Other exciting competitions are that on the most beautiful painting on hunt-ing, equestrian and heritage, in addition to a competition on the most expressive photograph on hunting and equestrian.

Also among the competitions is one organised by the Arabian Saluki Centre in Abu Dhabi, with a contest on the most beautiful saluki dogs of the Reesh and Hoss categories. The competition attracted hundreds of participants and thousands of

I wasn’t too sure about reviewing this treatment. As a chocolate lover, would it be the indulgence promised or simply a torturous experience where I would feel compelled to lick my own body?

The 60 minute treatment commences with a relaxing and cleansing foot ritual combining scrub and flower petal foot soak. The chocolate application was silky smooth and indeed indulgent. Imme-diately after the chocolate was applied, it was followed by a gentle scrub using brown sugar.

Once I was fully covered, I was wrapped up and then the face mask was applied. (Tip: Do take your own make up off before this treatment). While the heal-ing properties of the cocoa in the body wrap and face mask were absorbed by my skin, I enjoyed the most amazing head massage, ever.

A quick shower and I reverted to my lily-white self, feeling relaxed, soft and still

smelling yummy. The Chocolate Indulgence is avail-

able for the month of September. For the ultimate indulgence add a 50 minute Chi Balance massage at the end of your treatment and you’ll be in heaven. Contact +971 2 509 8900 or 8907

The Talise Ottoman spa at the Jumei-rah Zabeel Saray is truly impressive. And at 8000 sqm it is also the largest in the Middle East.

Walking in to the spa is like entering an ancient palace of the Ottoman Empire. Its soaring ceilings, stunning murals and colourful mosaics are a visual treat and tastefully traditional.

I had been recommended the tradi-tional Turkish Hamman which is a signa-

ture treatment from the spa’s hammam menu. I was led to the sauna to spend five minutes before being taken to what has to be the biggest hammam area I have ever seen. Lying face up on a large octagonal heated marble slab in the centre of the room Asmaa gently poured water over my whole body and proceeded to scrub my skin using a kese mitt.

The next part of the treatment is something I have never experienced before. Asmaa used what looked like an inflated pillow case immersed in a froth of olive oil soap bubbles to spread the soft silky mixture all over me.

After a massage with the soap I was guided to one of the stone basins around the room to be thoroughly rinsed off before being led to one of the curtained relaxation areas to stretch out before heading back to face the world again.

The traditional Turkish hammam takes about 40 minute. However do factor in plenty of time before your treatment to enjoy the facilities and the ambience. Contact + 971 4 453 0455 or +971 4 453 0456

Golden Tulip Khatt Springs Resort and Spa indeed lives up to its claim as an Oasis of Wellness, located in the heart of the Arabian countryside amidst the Hajjar Mountains, a four-star property in Ras Al Khaimah amazed me with their Harmony Ayurveda Centre.

The Centre has a wide range of herbal

and mineral medicines, treatment proce-dures for maintaining health and curing diseases comprising of nature’s very own hot thermal spring pools, enriched with minerals and natural remedies. There are also VIP massage and treatment rooms for men and women, and a private hot spring pool.

In all, Harmony Ayurveda Centre has three massage rooms and a steam chamber room in the gents section; and two massage rooms and a steam room in ladies section.

There are four male and three female masseurs with five years experience in Ayurveda treatments.

Upon entering the centre, I was greeted by the friendly staff that assisted me to the consultation room to meet their Ayurvedic doctor who suggested the best Ayurvedic treatment for me.

I had the pleasure to enjoy one of the Centre’s treatments—the Choorna kizhi, which lasted for an hour. It was one of the most relaxing and refreshing massage that I have had thus far. Sweating is produced by this massage with warm linen bags filled with herbal powder, heated in medi-cated oil in a bronze vessel.

This massage promotes oleation and perspiration simultaneously and enhances peripheral blood circulation. It relieved me of my muscular spasm, stiffness and joint pain. It also lubricated and strength-

ened the joints, while cleansing the chan-nels of circulation and expelling toxins through the sweat.

I gathered that this treatment is used very effectively in all rheumatic disorders, arthritic ailments and spondylosis.

Other must-have treatments are the Sirodhara, an ancient but most popular therapy used for centuries to restore inner calm and balance emotions; the Sarvanga swedam Udwarthanam, Nasyam, Pi-zhichil, Njavara kizhi, Bashpa swedam, Ksheeradhara, and Vasthi.

At the Centre is Dr. Anand. S. who took his B.A.M.S degree (Bachelor of Ayurveda Medicine and Surgery) from University of Kerala in 2008. He joined Pankajakasthuri Herbals India Ltd., a renowned Ayurveda institution in India, soon after the studies.

As part of his profession, he got experience on many aspects of Ayurveda including specialized experience on Panchakarma- the Ayurvedic cleansing massage treatment system. He also has presented many technical papers on vari-ous treatment modalities for arthritis, and low back ache in India and abroad. He has worked as a faculty member in Ayurveda degree courses, Ayurveda therapist train-ing programs and Music therapy with Ayurveda. He has worked in Malaysia as well.

Ayurveda, the 5,000-year-old authen-tically recorded science of life, is the tradi-tional natural healing system of India. One of the best things about staying at a resort is the easy access to the facili-ties. A leisurely stroll after breakfast and I am in the Zen Spa, a peaceful sanctuary

tucked away amidst the foliage of the Fujairah Rotana Resort and Spa.

If you are visiting the Zen Spa its worth going a little earlier to enjoy the wet, cold, heat area. Designed as a circuit

I am first led to a shower room that has jets positioned at all angles. After my shower I am escorted to the wet ham-mam, or steam room, to relax in clouds

of fragrant billowing steam. Following another long luxurious shower I head for the dry hammam, or Sauna. Finally after my third shower I poke my nose into the ice cave and politely decline the invitation

to sit inside its freezing interior. Thirty minutes later my therapist

takes me to the Serenity Suite. This beautifully appointed suite is designed for couples and it comes complete with its own Jacuzzi and shower room. It is tastefully done out in dark wood with red accents, and although this suite has large windows overlooking the gardens, I am completely hidden from view by chocolate blinds that allow only a hint of daylight through.

I had been recommended the Zen sig-nature massage as my treatment for today which was described in the brochure as a delightful journey with essential oils us-ing the relaxing strokes of the therapists hand and a bamboo cane to stimulate circulation and relieve tension.

My therapist uses a combination of gliding and kneading movements to warm up the skin. This is followed by the bamboo cane which she gently rolled across the muscles of my upper back, things and calves. While I did find the backs of my thighs a little ticklish the whole sensation was very pleasant.

After my massage I am left to relax with a cup of chamomile tea in the suite before heading to the changing rooms to get dressed after what has been a thor-oughly relaxing experience. Contact +971 9 2042138

Taste TravelMeet the Grand Daddy of Goan CuisineChef Urbano Do Rego awes Dubai with signature dishes

His first love was soccer but he discov-ered the art of making gourmet cuisine and has since never looked back.

Chef Urbano Do Rego, the Grand Daddy of Goan cuisine, has one good reason why: It blows the mind to come up with signature dishes from Goa’s traditional food with influence from the Portuguese kitchen, by itself a cornucopia of flavours from Portugal’s other former colonies like Brazil and Mozambique.

Goa was under Portuguese rule for over 450 years; it was annexed by India in 1961, and is now a thriving, economi-cally rich tourist enclave famous for its

world heritage architecture and, of course, exotic food to which Chef Rego is on the forefront of.

Chef Rego, who didn’t have a formal education in gastronomy but has over five signature dishes to his credit, starred in Taj Palace Hotel Dubai’s recently held Goan Food Festival during which his creations were showcased, among them Camarao Tigre Cilantro.

“I brought my specialties from Goa for the people of Dubai to discover,” Chef Rego tells Traval Arabia.

Camarao Tigre Cilantro, (camarao tigre is Portuguese for tiger prawn) is cooked in olive oil and marinated with lemon juice, chili paste, garlic, ginger and finished with sweet coconut milk. The dish is so flavourful, thick and creamy; it would be a shame not to let it roll in your mouth before bringing it down.

Other Rego creations are the Camarao Piri Piri, pan-grilled prawns; and Galinha Cafreal, grilled boneless chicken marinat-ed in a fiery combination of pepper and green spices.

In all, Goan food is an exotic blend of spices, flavours and herbs that give it a distinct taste. The Goan Food Festival concluded on July 31, 2011. But don’t fret. Chef Rego has trained Taj Palace Hotel Dubai’s kitchen staff to ensure that Goan food continues to be served.

Chef Rego, who had prepared meals for heads of states and royalties, has been with Taj Hotels for over 30 years, starting

out with a three-year apprenticeship pro-gram in 1970 at Taj Mahal Hotel Mum-bai—his entry into the culinary world.

An ear injury caused by soccer made him do a free kick into gastronomy where, over the years he learned the ropes by working alongside experienced chef. “I have no regrets,” he says.

As they say, the book doesn’t give you a taste of the food; the kitchen does. “All you need is passion,” says Chef Rego.

Chef Rego has been named “One of the Best Five Chefs in India” by the Hotel Federation of India and has organised and participated in many food festivals both in India and abroad. He has been seen on TV in many countries and has been featured in Upper Crust India, The Times, OHer-aldo, and many other fine publications.

Taj Palace Hotel’s Handi Indian Restaurant has them for you.

As its name suggests Rosso at the Amwaj Rotana is red. The tastefully decorated dark red walls and scarlet ac-cents throughout are complemented by oversized lampshades and ruby-red chairs making this outlet thoroughly modern yet very warm and inviting.

Located on The Walk Rosso benefits from the significant traffic that populates this area and so is a very lively venue no matter what night of the week it is. A

DJ plays in the lounge every Thursday and Friday night making this a popular hangout.

The real beauty of Rosso, though, is that it is more than just a restaurant. Many people get as far as the bar and are content to spend an evening there. Others prefer the Enoteca – or lounge – where they can kick back in comfort and sample from more than 100 different New World wines. Those looking for a quiet dinner

head further back into the restaurant section or, when the weather permits, out on the terrace. In total this outlet can accommodate more than 200, but it certainly doesn’t feel that big.

The restaurant’s head chef hails from Bari and is a huge fan of seafood sprin-kling his menu with mussels imported from Italy (when in season), plump prawns and tender calamari. His pasta is all hand crafted and his pizzas are hand-made – a process that can be observed through the large plate glass of the open kitchen. Dough is expertly tossed and baked in the wood-fired pizza oven before the myriad of fresh toppings are added.

“When I cook I like to transport guests to my favourite places in Italy where they can experience some of the wonderful food that I grew up with” said Antonio Lacovelli the restaurant’s head chef. “I have taken traditional dishes and given them a modern interpretation. And they are always elegantly presented”

Lacovelli’s speciality is the Spaghetti alla chitarra ai frutti di mare, hand crafted spaghetti with an array of seafood, garlic and olive oil. But he is not all about pasta. His Filetto di manzo alla Rossini beef ten-derloin with foie gras and black truffle is a dish that he is particularly proud of.

Rosso has been very shrewd, employ-ing not only an Italian chef to oversee the kitchen but also an Italian pastry chef. The resident Italian pastry chef means that the desserts are authentic. Notable mentions include the molten chocolate cake which oozes rich warm chocolate, or the Cassata – a vanilla, chocolate and tutti fruity gelato terrine with an interesting sponge centre. Desserts that are a fitting end to a classic meal.

It was shortly after iftar when I step into the spacious lobby of CityMax Hotel in Bur Dubai. The place is busy, packed with diners who are scurrying to break their fast by having dinner at the property’s all-day dining restaurant. It is indeed a scene to behold, especially for a property that is barely a year old.

CityMax Bur Dubai has several din-ing outlets but on this special evening, my visit is to sample the Chinese restaurant called Sizzling Wok. Open only for din-ner, the restaurant greets diners with its elegant and contemporary Chinese décor, vases painted with Chinese characters, red and dark wood motif and a Chinese melody plays in the background.

“We tried to be contemporary with our décor,” started Chef Robin Gomes, CityMax Bur Dubai’s Executive Chef. “Since we are a Chinese fusion restau-rant, we don’t want to be identified as an exclusively Chinese restaurant because our menu offers an extensive choice of Vietnamese, Singaporean, Chinese and other Asian dishes. We want to cater to a lot of guests who are not only from Asia but from Europe and the region as well!”

Chef Tek Bahadur who oversees the Sizzling Wok’s kitchen has a justified, quiet pride in his kitchen offerings. He says that his food presentations are one-of-a-kind, well researched and practiced to perfection. These elements combined with fast service, friendly staff and afford-able prices are the unique selling points

of the restaurant. The menu at Sizzling Wok isn’t large

and expensive but features impressive varieties. Our meal starts with Asparagus Soup, a mild soup with diced chicken and asparagus served with cilantro. The serv-ing portion is big enough for two and the freshness of the ingredients are obvious.

The must-try signature dishes are the Pecking Duck and Lobster in Garlic Sauce. The Pecking Duck, Beijing’s most famous dish is marinated, roasted and served with hoisin sauce on a sizzling platter. The dish is presented with small pocket-like pancake filled with spring onion and cucumber to place the thinly sliced duck. Chef Tek explained that he prepares the pancake that way so when it reaches the diner’s table, it would still be soft and good to the bite.

The Lobster in Garlic Sauce is an-other must-try. The lobster meat is stir fried in wok and topped with garlic sauce accompanied by steamed vegetable. What is amazing with the dish is its creative presentation. A whole lobster (about 300gm) sits on a plate served on your table with the meat impressively tucked inside the shell so when you open it, the aroma of the dish fills the air. Chef Tek cuts the lobster meat into small pieces, coated it and deep fry but there was no taste of oil, only natural, fresh and sweet flavour.

The finale of evening is the surprising dessert called Fried Ice Cream with Ten-der Coconut. A scoop of vanilla ice cream is rolled into home-made bread crumbs and dried coconut and deep fried. The chewy coating is quite intriguing as you dig deeper to savour the cold treat.

At Sizzling Wok, all these components are present! Flavourful food, creative chef, clean and unobtrusive décor, it is indeed one Chinese restaurant worthy of mention!

At Sizzling Wok, food is heaven!Sizzling Wok serves dishes on a sizzling platter so expect it piping hot, the smell of the food and the presentation will surely whet your appetite.

Does does travelling alone tickle your fancy?

I have been travelling alone since I was 18 years old. My first job was that of a flight attendant with Cathay Pacific Airways. I left India and moved to Hong Kong. That was the start of my love for travelling. Some trips I would be alone and some trips I would have company. I learnt very early on that one doesn’t really need company to enjoy.

Travelling alone can be boring for some, but for me its fun. Of course I am very happy when my husband and I take our annual holiday. That’s always the high-light of the year.

When was the last time you travelled?I was in South Korea for two-week

holiday with my husband in July. We visited Seoul and many untouched islands outside of Seoul. The highlight of the trip was a visit organized by United States Army to the Demilitarized Zone of North Korea. Absolutely amazing experience in a pouring rain! What is your dream destination?

Mount Kailash and Lake Mansorovar remain on the top of my list. The site is in China and one needs to obtain special permission to go there. Every year only

certain numbers of permits are issued and one needs to plan and apply one year in advance to go there. I want to visit the sight via Tibet and get a glimpse of Potala Palace, home of His Holiness Dalai Lama.

Name three places in the world that you can’t wait to see.

Russia, Australian Outback and Turkey. I have travelled all over the world but have not had the opportunity to visit these places.

Name three of your favourite places you would love to return to. Why go back?

Hong Kong is on top of my list because its home to me. I lived there for 10 years and I am a local there. I know all the best places to eat dim sum and go shopping.

Sydney, because of its vibrant soul and amazing harbour. I love the sight of the Opera House emerging from nowhere when you are on a ferry.

Korea is another place I would like to return to. There is so much to do and see. It’s a hidden treasure of Asia. Korea is the land of hidden gems.

Some would immediately hit the pool or the spa or the bar. Others would hit the road with their digicams and videocams. What about you?

I start by exploring the surroundings of the hotel and the public transport. I normally sit with the concierge and figure out how to get in and out of the hotel eas-ily. I also plan ahead by making notes from The Lonely Planet and the Internet. So I already have a plan in place about where to

go and what to do. I then sit with someone locals and figure out the best way to see these places. However I believe in leisure travelling, so I never cram my itinerary with too many places to see. The purpose of a holiday is to relax and enjoy the time.

What excites you when travelling?A new place to explore, local food to

try and new culture to see. I love the feel of a new city and using the public transport.

What motivates you to travel? Food? Shopping? Sightseeing?

Now I mainly travel for work. I am a feng shui consultant and run a wellbeing institute in Abu Dhabi. Our annual holiday is what really excites me. Every year we pick a country that we have not been to and plan the holiday with a lot of care.

Where to next?I am off to Jakarta on 20 August for

a week and then back to Abu Dhabi. The entire month of September and October I will be travelling to Doha, Mumbai, Lon-don and Maldives.

My Travel BagMy Travel Bag is a meeting point for today’s traveller’s interesting expe-riences. In this edition, Ms. Shivani Adalja of The Alignment Institute, shares what she has in her travel bag. We’re waiting for yours too. Send them at [email protected]. Send photos too.
