ART ENCOUNTERS A T H O M E MATISSE'S CUT OUTS Fauvism is a colourful style of art and comes from the French term “Wild Beasts”. Arising in the early 1900's, the style is known for artists using bright and unrealistic colours, and quick and expressive brushstrokes. Henri Matisse (1869 - 1954) was s French artist, and one of the co-creators of Fauvism. ACTIVITY: Below are some shapes with dotted outlines. Using coloured pencils or textas, COLOUR these in using only one colour for each shape. Then, with a pair of scissors CUT these shapes out along the dotted line - you can ask a parent or guardian to help cut out the more difficult shapes. Arrange the shapes on a new piece of paper in a pattern you like, then use a glue stick to STICK them down. EXTRA CHALLENGE: DESIGN your own set of abstract shapes, then follow the same steps above to create another unique piece!

Fauvism is a colourful style of art and comes from the French term “Wild Beasts”. Arising in

the early 1900's, the style is known for artists using bright and unrealistic colours, and quick

and expressive brushstrokes.

Henri Matisse (1869 - 1954) was s French artist, and one of the co-creators of Fauvism.

Towards the end of his life and career, he isolated colour and shape, creating more abstract
