It was a thrill to see Ralph, Jim and Myron Harrison recognized for their years of philanthropy at the Ventura County Star’s “25 over 50” awards gala on Oct. 16 at Spanish Hills Country Club.

Honorees included inspiring doctors, educators, business leaders, community activists and volunteers throughout Ventura County over the age of 50. Among those also cited were Dr. Richard Rush, president of California State University Channel Islands; Bill Kearney, senior vice president of Investments for Merrill Lynch/Bank of America; community activist Betsy Blanchard Chess; Trudy Tuttle Arriaga, superintendent of the Ventura Unifi ed School District; and KVTA Radio morning host Tom Spence.

Twenty-four of the 25 honorees were individuals, but the Star saw fi t to recognize the Harrison brothers together as one recipient. Who can argue? Th ey are jointly responsible for operating Harrison Industries and jointly responsible for donating millions of dollars through the years to a variety of nonprofi ts – particularly those serving the interests of children in our communities, such as Boys & Girls Clubs and the Boy Scouts of America. Th ank you, Ventura County Star, for this wonderful honor.

teams. Team Harrison Industries was comprised of Myron Harrison, John Harrison, Lynn Harrison, David Harrison and Willy Castillo. Team E.J. Harrison & Sons was made up of George Harrison, Donnie Harrison, Daniel Harrison, Darren Harrison and Agromin CEO Bill Camarillo.

Castillo, who works in our dispatch department, was the sharpest of the Harrison shooters by scoring 62 out of a possible 75 points. David Harrison was close behind him with 60 points and Myron Harrison had 51 points.In all, 40 teams comprised of 200 shooters entered. Coastal Harvesting Team No. 2 came in fi rst place, William L. Morris Chevrolet of Fillmore was second and City National Bank Team No. 1 was third.

Harrison Industries placed 22nd and E.J. Harrison & Sons was 39th. Although both teams would have liked to have done better, they had a great time!

Th e Harrison family will be out in force for the Ventura County Council, Boy Scouts of America’s 38th Annual Dinner Gala & Auction on Friday, Nov. 7 at Sherwood Country Club in Th ousand Oaks.

Th is wonderful gala, which begins at 6 p.m., is black tie optional and includes a cocktail reception, silent and live auction, and dinner. Th e Harrison brothers really look forward to this evening because their father E.J. was a Boy Scouts pack leader 70 years ago, and Ralph, Jim and Myron were all Boy Scouts. It was through Boy Scouts activities that the brothers developed their lifelong love of the outdoors. Th at’s also why the company is an enthusiastic sponsor of the Dinner Gala & Auction.

Harrison Reaches ‘Zero Waste’ at California Avocado Festival

Harrison Industries’ motto is “Moving toward Zero Waste,” and at the 28th annual California Avocado Festival in Carpinteria on Oct. 3-5, we came as close as possible to reaching that goal. Virtually all waste generated at the event was recycled.

For the fourth year in a row, we placed yellow-lid recycling barrels around the festival grounds specifi cally for disposed food waste and paper products. Th e materials were

delivered to our strategic partner Agromin, which is undertaking a pilot food waste program.

Th e barrels with the blue lids were for recyclables such as aluminum cans, glass bottles and plastic materials along with non-food trash. Th ese materials were sorted at our other strategic partner, Gold Coast Recycling & Transfer Station.

Donald Sealund, Harrison Industries’ food waste coordinator, and driver Edgar Jauregui, spent all three days and many long hours at the festival overseeing the waste collection eff orts. Several other Harrison employees also were involved in the Avocado Festival recycling eff ort. Good job!

Also, good job and thanks to the 100,000-plus festival-goers who did their part by placing materials in the correct barrels.

Ralph and Jenny Harrison, Jim Harrison and I had a wonderful time at the Jim Messina concert on Oct. 11 on a gorgeous evening at Ojai’s beautiful Libbey Bowl. We were happy that joining us at our table were Community Memorial Health System CEO Gary Wilde and his wife Cheryl, and CMHS Trustee Bill Kearney and his wife Elise.

Messina, a singer-songwriter whose career in rock ‘n roll has spanned nearly 50 years, delighted the crowd with a nostalgic mix of well-known hits from his days with Kenny Loggins and as a member of the bands Buff alo Springfi eld and Poco, along with some newer tunes. Rusty Young, a singer and celebrated pedal steel guitarist who was a member with Messina in Poco, joined his buddy on stage.

It was a great concert for a great cause. Money raised will go toward construction of the new Community Memorial Hospital, renovation of Ojai Valley Community Hospital and construction of a new Community Care Center in Ojai.

Kudos to the Community Memorial Healthcare Foundation for putting on quite a show!

California Coastal Cleanup Day on Sept. 20 was a major success in Ventura and Santa Barbara counties and across the state. Th is annual event is about much more than picking up trash. It’s a chance to gather as a community to show our respect for our ocean,

Carpinteria Triathlon Brings Out Competitive Best in People

Need to be inspired to get in better physical condition? Try attending the Carpinteria Triathlon. Th is year’s 17th annual event attracted close to 1,000 men, women and children of all ages who gathered at Carpinteria State Beach to compete on a bright, sunny Sunday morning on Sept. 28.

Harrison Industries is a longtime sponsor of the Carpinteria Triathlon and congratulates those who competed. Th e event raised more than $30,000 for the City of Carpinteria’s Parks and Recreation Department’s youth programs, including Aft er School at the Pool, Aqua Camp and Junior Lifeguards.

Carpinteria’s own Matthew Organista, 25, swam, bicycled and ran his way to victory in the challenging Olympic course event. He covered the 1.5-kilometer ocean swim, 40-kilometer bike ride and 10-kilometer run in one hour, 59 minutes and 33 seconds, close to eight minutes faster than last year’s winning time and over 10 minutes ahead of second-place fi nisher Brett Brown, 31, of Grover Beach (2:09.44). Paul Stepan, 29, of Santa Barbara, was third in 2:10.38.

Megan Monroy, 31, of San Diego, was the top woman fi nisher and 16th overall in 2:25.52. Nancy James-Klinger, 37, of Santa Clarita, was second in 2:26.24, 17th overall.

Robert Lyle, 36, of Th ousand Oaks, won the sprint course (750-meter ocean swim, 20-kilometer bike ride and 5-kilometer run) in one hour and 12 seconds. Cindi Abram, 46, of Santa Barbara, was the top woman fi nisher for the second year. She was 13th overall in 1:03.38. Chris Latham, 43, also of Santa Barbara, was second among women fi nishers, 15th overall in 1:04.27.

California Coastal Cleanup Day began in 1985 and has grown to one of the largest volunteer events on the planet. Th is year proved to be even larger than last year. More than 3,000 Ventura County and over 1,000 Santa Barbara County volunteers – families, students, service groups and neighbors – picked up a combined 11,744 pounds of trash and 2,205 pounds of recyclables from our coast, creeks, rivers, lakes and shorelines.

Statewide, 54,124 volunteers participated at 850 sites in 55 of California’s 58 counties. Th ey removed more than 576,571 pounds of trash and more than 109,494 pounds of recyclable material, totaling well over 686,065 pounds. Th at’s 343 tons!

Harrison Industries was happy to provide trash and recycling bins at several of the cleanup sites in the communities we serve at no charge.

Harrison Joins Thousand Oaks Parade Celebrating 50th AnniversaryCongratulations to Th ousand Oaks on its Golden Anniversary and a big “thumbs up” on the fantastic parade the city held on Sept. 27 to celebrate incorporation in 1964.

Th e parade’s theme was “Remembering the past, honoring the memories.” Th e parade featured fl oats, marching bands and equestrian teams as well as past and current local government offi cials, including former city council members and mayors.

Darren Harrison, Newbury Park fi eld supervisor for Harrison Industries, enjoyed the honor of driving one of our new trucks that runs on compressed natural gas down the parade route along Th ousand Oaks Boulevard. Darren’s wife Lisa joined him in the cab and both had a great time waving to the crowd while also tooting the truck’s loud horn.

“Many of them thanked us for being in the parade and thanked us for their service,” Darren related. “It was pretty overwhelming.”

‘A Bountiful Harvest’ Expo Brings Businesses, Customers TogetherHarrison Industries was one of about 70 companies with booths at the Ventura Chamber of Commerce’s 2014 “A Bountiful Harvest” Business Expo held Sept. 25 at the Four Points by Sheraton Ventura Harbor Resort.

Th is fun event also featured fi ve food vendors, raffl e prize giveaways, $100 drawings every hour on the hour, black out card prizes and more! Harrison is a proud sponsor of this event, which gives a big lift to the business community by providing local companies and organizations a chance to share their products and services with area residents and one another.

“A Bountiful Harvest” also gave everyone the opportunity network with fellow Chamber members and mingle with the public. We were happy to visit with a large number of Harrison customers who stopped by our booth, which was manned by Harrison Recycling Coordinator Peter Gutierrez. Harrison President Ralph Harrison, his wife Jenny and I also attended. I love this event!
