too long on our own guilt and shame. There we find only sorrow and darkness. Our gracious God leads us, however, to lift our eyes and, indeed, fix them on Jesus our Savior who loves us and gives Himself for us. This is where we derive our “Lenten renewal.” For Jesus makes all things new. It is in Christ, our Savior, that we all are made new. “For if anyone be in Christ he is a new creation. Behold, the old is gone, and the new has come. All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to Himself.” (2 Corinthians 5:17)

Post Tenebrae Lux. “After darkness, light.” This is our Lenten journey. Like real life, it is not always an easy one. In fact, facing up to our own inner darkness can be downright scary at times. But this necessary journey makes the journey’s end, Himself, all the more precious to us and worthy of our praise and joy on that day. The darkness of Lent then, in this paradoxical fashion, shines a spotlight on Easter’s sunrise.

So, join us Wednesdays and join hands as we together walk this road - remembering all the while that it is not only with each other that we walk, but “even though we walk through the valley of the shadow of death, Thou, O Lord, art with me.” Yes, the Good Lord, Himself, shepherds us through to the end and into a glorious new beginning in Him. Until then, we walk by faith. God grant you strength and stamina for your faith-walk!

Ye who think of sin but lightly Nor suppose the evil great Here may view its nature rightly Here its guilt may estimate Mark the sacrifice appointed See who bears the awful load 'Tis the Word, the Lord's Anointed Son of Man and Son of God

As we leave behind Epiphany and the Time of Christmas, Lent starts the Time of Easter, as it is the prelude season leading up to it (while Pentecost season follows Easter). Lent is one of the most important times of the year for Christians the world over and serves a similar role to Advent – the build-up season to Christmas.

Whereas Advent is more a celebration and a time of exciting anticipation, Lent is experienced more as a time of solemn observance and almost silent preparation for the commemoration of the death of Jesus on Good Friday. The “Alleluia’s”, indeed, go silent until the resurrection of Jesus when they will burst forth once again at the start of the Easter season. From Lent’s start on Ash Wednesday until its conclusion on Holy Saturday, Lent is a penitential time for prayer and reflection. Just as we carefully prepare for events in our personal lives - a wedding, or a birthday - so Lent invites us to make our minds and hearts ready for observing Jesus’ life, passion and death on the cross.

The reason we do not sing “Alleluia” during Lent can be understood by looking at the word, itself. "Alleluia" literally comes from a Hebrew word that means “Praise God”. Since it’s a joyous, celebratory expression, and since Lent is just about the opposite of a joyous party, it makes sense that we would omit a word like this as part of our penitential practice.

What about the colors of Lent? What does purple signify? Purple is the color of the season for two reasons: firstly, because it is associated with mourning and so anticipates the pain and suffering of our Lord’s Passion, and, secondly, because purple is the color also associated with royalty (think of the purple robe that the Roman soldiers placed around the scourged Jesus to mock Him). But this royal purple, like Pilate’s sign on Jesus’ cross, ironically witnesses to Christ's true kingly sovereignty - a fact that will become evident to all at His resurrection, displaying sovereignty over even death when we finally get to Easter Sunday. Looking forward!

SAD PICTURE… Some of you missed Fellowship's Painting Night. So sad!

26 Peace painters donned aprons and painted a landscape painting.

Miss Natalie led us by example and all we had to do was to follow instructions.

Every painting was different, while they were all alike.

The 26 artists painted the same scene with varying degrees of results.

It was a great evening and everyone loved the experience.

Another Painting Night was requested by the inspired artists.

Fellowship will provide another Painting Night this fall.

Thank you for coming!

It was fun for all of us.

JUNE 22-26, 2020

Dear Friends,

Save the date: M-F June 22-26. God always seems to bless this major outreach with the Good News of Jesus that our church puts on each summer. But we can’t do it without YOU! We are always so grateful for the generous volunteers who roll up their sleeves and pitch in for the sake of the children whom the Lord draws to this week-long, exciting event. This year’s theme points to the lush land of Rainforest Explorers. Sign up & join in - the misty rain is refreshing and the critters so cute!

MORE THAN ONE KIND OF SMART Sometimes we talk as though intelligence were a single commodity that people have in greater or lesser supply. Yet we see all around us adults and children who are very smart in math but not at all good with words, musically gifted but klutzy on the athletic field, and so on. Most of us, in fact, struggle with some task and sail through others. Educators now know more about this variety in individuals' "intelligences"---the modes we use to interact with the world---thanks to the work of psychologist Howard Gardner. Seven of these intelligences are described by Gardner. Children with a musical intelligence have a natural ear for melody, rhythm, and other musical elements; spatially oriented children enjoy reading maps and exploring how mechanical devices work. Other children are more at home using their linguistic aptitude---telling stories, playing with words, and reciting tongue twisters. Strong logical-mathematic intelligence shows up not only in math aptitude but in enjoyment of games and problems requiring logic and reasoning. Children who learn best when they are moving and handling things rely on their bodily-kinesthetic intelligence. An affinity for the natural world and its creatures stands out in children with a naturalistic mode of intelligence. Finally, children who make friends easily and have plenty of "street smarts" are interpersonal naturals, while quiet thinkers and strong-willed debaters shine in the more internal, reflective intrapersonal mode. All of us have preferred modes of intellectual functioning. At the same time, we need to use each of the modes in one situation or another. Recognizing the various ways that children think and learn, teachers can help children both to use their individual strengths and to become more adept in learning modes that are not their strong point.

TUITION Your seventh tuition payment for the school year is now due. It will be considered late after March 7th. Thank you for your prompt payment.
