Letter of the Week: Ll
Word Family: -‐y (try, cry, my, fly, by…)
Weekly Words: is, on, me
Theme: Three Little Pigs (it’s the last week)
Read Aloud: The Three Horrid Little Pigs by Liz Pichon The Three Little Wolves and the Big, Bad Pig by Eugene Trivizas The Three Little Fish and the Big, Bad Shark by Ken Geist The Three Little Rigs by David Gordon The Three Little Aliens and the Big, Bad Robot by Margaraet McNamara Other Books your might enjoy: Have fun finding your own favorite version of the 3 little pigs. Please share any favorites with us!
Conversation Starters: Here are some questions to ask:
• What have you been building at school? What materials have you been using? Do you have a favorite material yet?
• Have you tried the science center on stability yet? If so, what have you learned by doing it?
Fun things to learn about together:
• This mini-‐unit on the 3 pigs is a great starting point for talking about real animals that build their homes. Some examples are birds-‐who make nests, wasps who build paper nests, beavers who build lodges, and ants and rodents who make underground boroughs. Do some research and share what you’ve learned!
Focus Interim: Three Little Pigs 3
Dear Families: We are in our last week learning about the 3 Little Pigs. Try at least three of these fun learning activities, or do them all! The most important thing is to enjoy time with your child learning about what’s happening in the classroom. Please color in the boxes of the activities you choose, and return this to school at the end of the week. HAVE FUN!
Language: Tools
Take a trip to a hardware store or look at the different tools and materials you have at home (scissors, nails, screwdriver, etc.). Talk about what they are used for. Which one is your favorite? Why?
Science: Weight and Stability
Stand up a group of empty water bottles and a group of bottles filled with water or sand (sealed). Roll a tennis ball toward each group. What did you observe? Why do you think that happens?
Language and Literacy:
Make up a new story with three big bad pigs and one small good wolf. Take turns with your child telling different parts of the story.
Literacy: Which ones Rhyme?
Can you find three words that rhyme with hay and with map? You can draw them or write them.
Gross Motor: Acting like Tools
Can you be a... hammer, ruler, building, rubber band, saw? What would you do? How would you move? Have fun with this! Your child will have great ideas to act out different tools, just ask them.
Math: Stability
Use the same group of bottles as with the Science activity above. Take 1 step forward and roll the ball. Observe what happens. Then count 3 steps and roll the ball, then 5 steps, and then 7 steps. Notice what happens each time you roll the ball.
