2 May 3, 08 -Mr. Lockwood gets to Wuthering Heights just as it starts to snow -Mr. Lockwood jumps over the gate and knocks on the door but no one answers it -Joseph comes out of the barn and tells Mr. Lockwood that Mr. Heathcliff is not home, a young man comes out and gets Mr. Lockwood to follow him -when Heathcliff comes in Mr. Lockwood asks him for a guild to take him home since he will not be able to find his way with all the snow, but Heathcliff refuses -at tea Mr. Lockwood tries to make conversation and assumes that the young girl is Heathcliff’s wife, but she is his dead son’s wife-when Mr. Lockwood asks to stay the night Heathcliff says he will have to share a bed with Hareton, or

Hareton Earnshaw -seems demanding -cool to others -very sure of himself Joseph-takes pride in his work -works in the barn mainly Hareton -seems to have some civil characteristics when he offers to take Mr. Lockwood half way home-takes care of the

-all of the people within Wuthering Heights all seem to hate each other-by introducing Wuthering Heights through Mr. Lockwood readers can compare the normal Mr. Lockwood with the strange scene of life at Wuthering Heights

Joseph because he will not have a stranger alone in his house-Mr. Lockwood is offended and tries to go home, but Joseph sends the dogs after him-Zillah takes Mr. Lockwood inside and shows him to his bed

horses at the Heights

3 May 4, 08 -Zillah shows Lockwood to a room -in the window sill he sees the names Catherine Earnshaw, Catherine Linton, and Catherine Heathcliff-he has two strange dreams -he screams and Heathcliff comes into the room -Heathcliff tells Lockwood to go downstairs but Lockwood remains long enough to hear Heathcliff calling out the window for Cathy -Heathcliff walks Lockwood back home

Lockwood -curious -strong willed Heathcliff-seems to be starting to like Lockwood a little bit-likes to keep to himself

-Heathcliff calling out the window could must be hinting at a past relationship

4 May 4, 08 -Lockwood is lonely so when he has supper he asks his housekeeper to keep him company, he asks her to tell him the history of the people at Wuthering Heights -she tells him that the Catherine he met at the Heights is the daughter of Catherine Earnshaw and Hareton is her son-Nelly grew up severing the Earnshaw family -she tells Lockwood a story of how Mr. Earnshaw went to town and bought back homeless boy and they named him Heathcliff and Mr. Earnshaw raised him like their son -Mrs. Earnshaw and Hareton never trusted Heathcliff as much as Mr. Earnshaw or Catherine

Heathcliff-is not a true member of the Earnshaw family Nelly Dean -servant of the Earnshaw family and now is Lockwood’s servant -talks a lot Lockwood -seems to be getting lonely living in such an isolated place

-it is an interesting twist that Heathcliff is not an true member of the Earnshaw family -this could be the way the rest of the story will be told through Nelly’s story telling

5 May 4, 08 -Mrs. Earnshaw died two years after Heathcliff came, and Mr. Earnshaw was starting to go downhill-Heathcliff goes to university

Catherine -wild -pretty

-it seems strange that Heathcliff and Catherine are so close

-Mr. Earnshaw dies one night by the fire and Heathcliff and Catherine help each other through their grief

-doesn’t listen to directions

yet Hareton does not seem to be in this close relationship

6 May 5, 08 -Hindley is now the master of the house, so he comes home and brings a wife, Frances -Hindley makes Heathcliff live with the servants, work in the fields all day and does not allow him to continue his education -Catherine and Heathcliff often go out on adventures -one time they go to the neighboring house Thrushcross Grange where the Linton’s live-the Linton’s see the two looking in the window and release the dog on them -they take Catherine in because they recognize her, and they send Heathcliff away-Heathcliff goes home

Frances -flighty -bubbly -light hearted -delicate Heathcliff and Catherine-just as close as before

-Hindley is now able to show his anger towards Heathcliff because his father is no longer there to stop it

7 May 5, 08 -Catherine stays at Thrushcross Grange for 5 weeks -when she comes back to Wuthering Heights she is much more mature and grown up -when Catherine greats Heathcliff she is glad to see him but she tells him that his dirtiness disturbs her-Heathcliff is very upset by this -the next day is Christmas and the Linton’s come over -Heathcliff comes down after the others have gone to church and asks Nelly to help him clean himself up-when Hindley sees Heathcliff a fight takes place and Heathcliff is sent upstairs

Heathcliff-wants to get Hindley back for what he is doing to himEdgar -starting to show interest in Catherine

-a love triangle is starting to form between Edgar Linton and Heathcliff -Catherine has natural attraction for Heathcliff, but likes Edgar for his money and position in society

8 May 6, 08 -six months later Frances has a son named Hareton, and a show time after his birth she dies -Hindley is upset and shows this by rage -all the servants but Nelly and Joseph leave

Catherine -now the “queen of the countryside”-beautiful

-Catherine is living a double life and it is only a matter of time before they both

-one day Heathcliff comes home when Catherine has invited Edgar over-Catherine tries to get rid of Heathcliff before Edgar comes home -Heathcliff tells Catherine she cares for Edgar’s feelings more than his and Catherine knows his accusations are right but is to proud to admit it -Heathcliff leaves just before Edgar comes, when Catherine greats him Nelly stays in the room as are Hindley’s orders -Catherine asks her to leave, but Nelly refuses and Catherine pinches her-a fright breaks out and Catherine slaps Nelly and shakes Hareton, when Edgar goes in to save the baby Catherine slaps him to -Edgar is about to leave but his feelings for Catherine holds him back -Nelly comes and warns them that Hindley is returning drunk

-arrogant -still likes Heathcliff-tries to keep the Edgar and Heathcliff apartHindley -turning into an alcoholicEdgar -his friendship with Catherine seems to be turning into love

collide- Edgar’s friendship with Catherine seems to be turning into love starting in this chapter

Catherine -has become obsessed with social class -deeply loves Heathcliff but decides to marry Edgar Nelly -is now Catherine’s servant at Thrushcross Grange Hareton-now left to be cared

-the theme of social class is first introduced -I’m curious to see what will happen to Hareton being alone with only his father to look after him

-Catherine runs after him, but gets sick from the rain -she is taken to Thrushcross Grange to recover, but Mr. and Mrs. Linton get sick from Catherine and die-three years later Catherine and Edgar marry

Heathcliff-becomes a handsome and polished man, but his eyes still remain savage likeCatherine -happy to see Heathcliff and allows Edgar to see this Nelly -seems to think that Heathcliff has bad motives for letting Isabella fall in love with him

-could be foreshadowing Heathcliff and Isabella’s relationship -I’m starting to notice that time is mentioned a lot in this novel as well as in Jane Eyre

11 May 7,08 -One day Nelly goes to Wuthering Heights to talk to Hindley , but sees Hareton in the yard -Nelly sends Hareton to go get his father, but when Nelly see Heathcliff come to the door she turns and runs-a few days later when Nelly is looking out the windows of the Grange she sees Heathcliff come and talk to Isabella and then he embraces her-Nelly tells Catherine what she has seen, and Catherine insists that Heathcliff tell her his true feelings for Isabella -Heathcliff fights with Catherine and tells her that he is

Catherine -begins to see that she made a mistake by marrying Edgar instead of Heathcliff-she seems to be strangely strong for a women in this time period Isabella -now must choose between the Linton’s or

-the love triangle between Catherine, Edgar and Heathcliff is very similar to the one between Jane, Mr. Rochester, and St. John in Jane Eyre

uses Isabella to get her money -while they fight Nelly tells Edgar of Heathcliff’s plan-Edgar storms into the room where they are fighting and demand that Heathcliff leave the property, and then calls in the servants to help remove him-Catherine locks the room and throws the keys into the fire forcing the men to communicate -Edgar punches Heathcliff in the throat and Heathcliff leaves through the garden -Edgar is angry and tells Catherine that she must chose between Heathcliff or himself-Catherine refuses to answer and locks her self away in her room -Edgar warns Isabella that if she continues to see Heathcliff he will cast her out of the Linton family

-in Catherine’s illness she speaks of things she would not conscious say, she opens up about her feelings for Heathcliff-it is interesting to hear what she really thinks

13 May 8,08 -Nelly and Edgar spend the next 2 months nursing Catherine back to health, but she never fully recovers-Catherine learns she is pregnant -six weeks after Heathcliff and Isabella have been married, Isabella writes to Edgar asking for

Heathcliff-become the head of Wuthering HeightsHindley -wants to get

-in the Heights a major theme seem to be hate, and revenge

forgiveness, but Edgar ignores them -she also writes to Nelly and tells her about her experiences at the Heights-Hindley, Hareton, and Joseph are cruel to her, and Hindley has become obsessed with Heathcliff -in the letter Isabella begs Nelly to visit her, and that she has made a mistake by marrying Heathcliff

Catherine -dies, but leaves her daughter behind Heathcliff-takes the news of her death quietly and finally knows he made a mistake by marrying Isabella

-it will be interesting to see if the reaction that Hindley has to his wife’s deaths will be the same one that Edgar will have

17 May 9, 08 -after the funeral Isabella runs to The Grange laughing hard-she comes at a time when she knows Edgar will be asleep and she asks Nelly for help-the relationship between Hindley and Heathcliff had become violent and Hindley was planning on shooting Heathcliff -in an incident Hindley shot himself in the wrist and then Heathcliff beat him, then in the morning when Catherine told Hindley what happened they started to fight again and that was when Catherine left -Isabella leaves for London and has her and Heathcliff’s son, Linton -she stays in London for twelve years, and dies when Linton is twelve -Nelly goes to Wuthering Heights to make funeral arrangements and to bring Hareton to Thrushcross

-interesting that Heathcliff has not gone looking for his son since he seems to be a very controlling character but chapter does foreshadow him looking after him in the future

Grange -Heathcliff will not allow Nelly to take Hareton and says it is his plan to raise him himself, and that he plans to get Linton sometime also

upbringing is instead made to work for his keep-friendless -uneducated -without hope
