Lawn and Garden Tips for April What to Plant Annuals: New varieties of coleus in sun or shade and provide vivid colors and patterns for months.

Bulbs: This is an ideal time to plant many bulbs. Con-sider planting blood lily, caladium, or canna. Louisiana iris makes a beautiful cut flower and thrives in most soil types although they prefer moist soils with a high or-ganic matter content.

Herbs: Plant heat-loving herbs, including basil, oregano, sage, Mexican tarragon, and rosemary.

Vegetables: Continue planting warm season crops. Plant okra and cucumber. Mulch well to prevent weeds and provide irrigation if rainfall is lacking.

What to Do Pests: Monitor landscape plants weekly for aphids on tender new growth.

Divide perennials and bulbs. Divide clumps of bulbs, ornamental grasses, or herbaceous perennials to ex-pand or rejuvenate garden beds or to pass-along to friends.

Lawn Problems: Many cultural lawn problems such as

lack of water mimic insect damage. Confirm the damage is being caused by insects before applying a pesticide.

Shrubs: Planting season is here and there are a wide variety of shrubs that can be added to the landscape now.

Trees: Many beautiful trees are in bloom. Consider plant-ing fringetree, Carolina Silverbell, or redbud.

Fertilize lawns: Apply fertilizer no sooner than mid-April after new growth has started. Choose one with no or very little phosphorus unless a soil test indicates a need for it. A fertilizer containing slow release nitrogen will give longer lasting results.

April's Yard of the Month

We would like to congratulate Marilyn and Bob Nice and the newest addition of the family Charlie of 1778 Tall Tree Dr E. They have been selected for April 2017’s Yard Of the Month. Marilyn stated she likes to view the homes of past Yard Of the Month winners....well Marilyn, now your neighbors will come and see your lovely yard. Congratulations for helping to make our commu-nity a beautiful place to live. (See picture on Page 4)

An Update from the Recreation and Social Committee The Recreation and Social Committee would like to thank all the volunteers and participants who came out to support the first Food Truck and Movie Night of 2017. Pie95, The Pita Boss and The Loving Cup provided excel-lent food and beverages for the community, and the O’Donovan family provided the movie equipment so we could all watch the Secret Lives of Pets.

We also would like to thank the community for the dona-tions; we collected ($85) to help offset future movie costs. We look forward to future movie nights this sum-mer and fall!

Wahoo Swim Team

We are glad to have the Wahoos Swim Team back in The Woods for this summer season for the 4-10 year old age group. We will be having afternoon practices during the month of May and first week in June from 5-6:30pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and in June and July the prac-tices will be in the mornings from 8:30-10:00am. All non-residents will be required to pay an additional fee to use the facilities but The Woods residents will

not. Coach Carlos Mejia and some parent volunteers will be happy to answer any questions you may have on the program, registration, etc. at an informal informa-tional meeting at The Woods Clubhouse on April 12th from 6-7pm. You can also visit the Wahoos Website at https://www.teamunify.com/Home.jsp?team=recrrwst. Go Wahoos!

Community Kickball Tournament and Food Truck Event

We will be holding a Community Kickball Tournament on April 30th from 1pm - 5pm at the community baseball field. We will also be hosting 4 Trees Food Truck that will have wonderful bbq plates and platters, along with a great kids menu that includes grilled cheeses, hot dogs, etc. to purchase. If you do not wish to play, please come

out and enjoy the food (or bring your own) and community get together.

This tournament is for all residents, and we are asking you to form your own teams. We currently have 2 full teams, and we welcome any partici-pant 7 years old and up. Children must be accompanied by an adult. If you are unable to fill a team, we will place you on a team based on avail-ability. We will place forms at the of-fice or they can be found online (Facebook groups or NextDoor).

Please have the forms into the office or emailed to Toby LaBarbera by April 8th, 2017: [email protected]. We are looking for a great turnout and fun to be had by adults and kids in The Woods Community.

May Food Truck Night

We are looking to host a Food Truck night in May. It would need to be on a Friday night since the clubhouse has been booked every Saturday in May. We are looking to see if we can host the Funkadelic Food Truck and an-other TBD truck. We also may look to see if anyone would like to do a game night or something at the club-house in coordination with the Food Truck night. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

End of School Bash

Planning for the End of School Bash is still ongoing and the event will be held June 3rd from 11AM - 3PM. This will be a pool party with pizza and water, Guanabana Ice Pops Food Truck, music, kickball games, etc. If you are interested in helping out, please contact Taneen at [email protected].
