The Woodsette—April 2016—Page 2

On March 17th at 7pm, Women of The Woods cele-brated Movie Night featuring the fabulous sequel The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. This was the follow up movie to the one that we watched to-gether two years ago (The Best Exotic Marigold Ho-tel). At the end of the movie, we had a drawing, and one lucky member (Carol Bernardis) went home with the DVD.

April 21st at 7pm is Election Night. Any members who wish to join the WOW Board for the 2015-2016 year will be nominated, and the group will vote on the new board. This will also be Game Night, and we will play (some of us will be learning to play...) BUNKO!!!! So whether you are a "pro" or a beginner, plan to JOIN US FOR FUN AND FELLOW-SHIP at our last "Clubhouse meeting" of the year in the newly remodeled clubhouse. We'll have

snacks, wine, and beverages while we play.

Our final meeting on May 19th is our Celebration Dinner at a restaurant (location to be announced in April.) Members who have paid their $15 dues will have their meal provided by WOW. (Only alcoholic beverages are not included.)

The Woods Spring Garage Sale sponsored by Women of The Woods has been cancelled because of the Hodges Guard Gate house construction. The next garage sale will be in early October - specific date to be announced during the summer.

Women of The Woods meets on the third Thursday of each month in The Woods Clubhouse at 7pm. Annual dues are $15/person, payable by check or cash. If you have questions, please call Jeannie at 992-3848.

Women of the Woods

Please don’t park behind the Atlantic guard-house. This area is used for ingress and egress for the Squirrel Tree Court Please use the Atlan-tic parking area if needed.

For owners that border the retention ponds, ca-nals and ditches - please do not dump your land-scaping debris in these areas. This causes the water to back up for not only our community, but surrounding comminutes as well. Please take advantage of the City of Jacksonville’s lawn de-bris pick up which occurs every Thursday.

Overnight parking at the Community Center and Atlantic parking lot is only permitted if you have a

pass. No overnight parking is permitted other-wise.

Guests - Please remember to call the gates ahead of time for your guests. This will be espe-cially important while the Hodges gate is closed for rebuilding. If you are having a party, a guest list must be delivered to the guard houses ahead of time. If you have frequent visitors, it is a great idea to purchase a frequent visitor pass. These can be purchased at the office for $5.00, and will facilitate moving your guests through the gate quickly without having to look up your information in the computer and call for entry.

What to Plant

Annuals: New varieties of coleus do well in sun or shade and provide vivid colors and patterns for months.

Bulbs: This is an ideal time to plant many bulbs. Consider planting blood lily, caladium, or canna. Louisiana iris makes a beautiful cut flower and thrives in most soil types although they prefer moist soils with a high organic matter content soil.

Herbs: Plant heat-loving herbs, including basil, oregano, sage, Mexican tarragon, and rosemary.

Garden Vegetables: Continue planting warm sea-son crops. Plant okra and cucumber. Mulch well to prevent weeds and provide irrigation if rainfall is lacking.

What to Do

Pests: Monitor landscape plants weekly for aphids on tender new growth.

Divide perennials and bulbs: Divide clumps of bulbs, ornamental grasses, or herbaceous perenni-als to expand or rejuvenate garden beds or to pass-along to friends.

Lawn Problems: Many cultural lawn problems such as lack of water mimic insect damage. Confirm the damage is being caused by insects before applying a pesticide.

Shrubs: Planting season is here and there are a wide variety of shrubs that can be added to the landscape now.

Landscape Trees: Many beautiful trees are in bloom. Consider planting fringetree, Carolina Silverbell, or redbud.

Fertilize lawns: Apply fertilizer no sooner than mid-April after new growth has started. Choose one with no or very little phosphorus unless a soil test indicates a need for it. A fertilizer containing slow release nitrogen will give longer lasting results.
