Greetings,

As your National Equity Representative for Women and co-chair of the Conference Steering Committee, I would like to welcome each of you to the first ever UNE Women’s Conference.

This Conference recognizes that we as women deserve our own forum, one that addresses our issues and services not only our activism, but improves and impacts our overall lives.

After this week, our voices will ring louder and united.

We will stand stronger, with arms linked and empowered as we elevate ourselves in all levels of union leadership.

We hope you are enriched by what your committee has put together and that you leave the Conference feeling every bit the strong woman each and every one of you are.

Keynote Speaker

Joyce HendyJoyce Hendy is a retired union activist who has held a variety of local, regional and national positions in her 25 year plus, history with UNE and the PSAC.

Joyce was born and raised in Sherbrooke, Quebec, in a large extended first-generation Syrian Canadian family. She grew up speaking three languages fluently (French, English and Arabic) and is trying to relearn Arabic in retirement.

She started in her career in the public service in correctional services as a counsellor to in-mates. Once she moved to Toronto after she got married she joined Statistics Canada. She retired from the Public Service in 2012.

She became a union activist in 1983 and from 1983 to 2011 she held various positions with-in UNE including, but not limited to, Local Secretary, Local President, Assistant Regional Vice-President, Equal Opportunities Chair (before the position was elected and part of the national executive), Regional Vice-President and National Vice-President.

At the PSAC level she also held a number of positons including Chair of the Regional Wom-en’s Committee and GTA Representative on the Regional Council.

In retirement Joyce has continued to work on a variety of contracts including work for Nun-avut Employees Union, Statistics Canada, Elections Ontario and Elections Canada.

On a personal level Joyce enjoys spending time with family and friends as well as baking, gourmet cooking and travelling.

Morna Ballantyne

Morna Ballantyne is the executive director of Child Care Now, Canada’s national child care advocacy organization. Child Care Now is dedicated to advocating for a publicly funded, inclusive, quality, non-profit child care system. The organization is non-profit, membership-based and regionally representative. Child Care Now organizes activities, initiates campaigns and works with other pan-Canadian organizations to raise the profile of child care as a political issue and generate support for our aims.

Michelle Furgiuele

Ms. Furgiuele began her healing journey and was put in touch with a survivor lead organization Timea’s Cause, formerly known Walk With Me Canada. Through her work with the organization, Ms. Furgiuele has been presenting for high schools, elementary schools, Police Agencies, Service Providers, Financial Institutions, the Hotel and Hospitality industry, and more.

Ms. Furgiuele is a Canadian survivor, speaker and consultant with Timea’s Cause Inc. and was trafficked for the purpose of sexual exploitation by Canadian sex traffickers.

Ms. Furgiuele has co-written several manuals on how to detect Human Trafficking and has assisted victims in crisis. Some of the agencies she has assisted are the Ontario Provincial Police, Waterloo Regional Police, Lindsay Police, American Express just to name a few. Ms. Furgiuele is also the Director of Operations at Timea’s Market, a side business under the umbrella of Timea’s Cause Social Enterprise that employs and trains survivors of sex trafficking in Canada.

Kate Hart

Kate transitioned publicly in the workplace in 2008 and has been active in the union ever since. She has been a Local human rights representative, Local President, National Equity Representative for LGBTQ2+ and a member of the PA Group bargaining team.Currently she is the UNE Assistant National Vice-President for Human Rights.

Kate is also a Positive Space Ambassador and Peer Supporter for her department and facilitates Positive Space and Armed Intruder Awareness courses. She has dealt with many of the issues surrounding LGBTQ2+ individuals – depression, suicide and suicidal ideation, self-worth, fear, family issues, stress and stress management. She has experience in dealing with equity groups in the community and from around the world.

Paula Naponse

Paula Naponse is an educator and a course facilitator. She holds a Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Education and a Master of Education. With over 15 years in program development, training and facilitation in Indigenous communities Paula is also an entrepreneur and has a clothing/accessories business called Ondarez Clothing and Goods which is a line of lifestyle wear to showcase the positive life on a First Nation.

Magali Picard

Magali Picard was elected as the PSAC National Executive Vice-President at PSAC’s 18th National Triennial Convention in May 2018. She previously served as the Regional Executive Vice-President (REVP) for PSAC’s Quebec Region from 2012-2018. She chairs the PSAC Quebec Council, is Vice-President of the Fédération des travailleurs et travailleuses du Québec (FTQ) and a member of the FTQ Solidarity Fund Board of Directors. At the regional level, organizing, education, political and social action, equity and women’s programs, area councils, directly chartered locals and separate employers are under her purview.

Ellen Roseman

Ellen Roseman is a journalist who sticks up for ordinary Canadians. She’s been advocating for financial literacy and consumer rights for the past 40 years. Ellen wrote a personal finance and consumer column in the Toronto Star’s business section from 1999 to July 2019. Before that, she was a Globe and Mail columnist from 1976 to 1996. She is the author of seven books. Her latest book, published in 2013, is called Fight Back: 81 Ways to Help You Save Money and Protect Yourself from Corporate Trickery. She has taught courses in investing and personal finance at the University of Toronto’s continuing studies department since 2004. She also has led Financial Basics workshops at Ryerson University in Toronto since 2010. She hosts The MoneySaver Podcast with Lana Sanichar, the editor of Canadian MoneySaver magazine. Ellen is also co-chair of the board of FAIR (Canadian Foundation for Advancement of Investor Rights).

Blandine Soulmana

Arab on her father’s side and European on her mother’s Blandine has lived through many hardships: affective, intellectual, material and spiritual. Part of her wanted to gag the other. Pretend as though it were someone else’s life, not hers. She didn’t succeed. Rather, she removed the gag and let her story flow from her very depths. She will never again be silenced.

At the heart of her message, one finds the importance of accepting oneself and surrendering control to life. In order to grow, one must stop being on the defensive, justifying oneself, accusing others or having the last word. The only control remaining is what we do with what is left.

Nycole Turmel

Nycole Turmel is a long-time union activist. From 1979 to 2006, Nycole held various union positions at the local, regional and national levels for the Canada Employment and Immigration Union (CEIU) as well as for the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC).

In 2002, Nycole was the first woman to become the PSAC National President. She was re-elected in 2003. She then retired from the federal government in 2006.

In 2007, she volunteered as Vice-President of the first Ombudsman’s Office for the City of Gatineau.

In 2009, she unsuccessfully tried her hand running for municipal elections. On May 2, 2011 she was elected as an NDP member of Parliament for the Hull-Aylmer riding. She was the first woman elected in that riding and the first one to defeat the Liberal Party who had held the riding since its creation. She became Leader of Canada’s Official Opposition following the death of NDP leader Jack Layton until the election of Thomas Mulcair. She was a Member of Parliament from 2011 to 2015.

Since 2015, Nycole has been volunteering at Le Gîte Ami, a homeless shelter, where she is currently President of the Board of Directors. She is also a Rotary Club member.

All her life, she has believed in the cause of social justice and has fought against injustice. Nycole is a proud feminist. Her message: Never give up and believe in the future.

Mary Anne Walker

Mary Anne works as the Regional Representative in Iqaluit Nunavut, and was a proud member of UNE from the time that her employer group was organized in 2001 until 2019. From 2005 to 2019 she had four terms as RVP for Ontario and was part of UNE’s national executive.

Mary Anne grew up in the far north and came south to school where she met her husband and settled in the Stratford area. Raising three children, the sparkle of her eye, and farming asparagus and blueberries.

She has a long history and career of union activities and community activism working for social justice and promoting women’s equality.

When asked what her passion was, it was an easy answer as she worked with commitment to change the precarious working conditions of workers and to assist members in their daily struggles.

Marie Clarke Walker

Marie started her career working in a home for the elderly, later with adults and children with developmental disabilities, as a counsellor and family-support worker in Toronto, and once again at the School Board as an Early Childhood Educator working with children with disabilities. She rose rapidly through the ranks of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), and eventually became CUPE Ontario’s Equity Vice-President and her union’s first-ever national Diversity Vice-President. Marie made history in 2002 when she was elected as the first racialized woman and youngest person ever elected to the position of Executive Vice-President of the Canadian Labour Congress (CLC). She served in that position for five terms before once again making history in May 2017, being elected as the first-ever racialized woman to serve as CLC Secretary-Treasurer.
