Dear Parents/Caregivers – welcome to Week 9! As we come to a close on our first term for 2021, I would like to start by acknowledging our wonderful P&C who have worked tirelessly this term over a number of fundraising initiatives and special events for our students and school, including the Easter Bonnet Parade which was held at the Community Hall. On behalf of our students and staff, thank you for the work that you do. Additionally, our P&C alongside the Shire of Ashburton provided tremendous support of our recent Harmony Day Event. The Shire organised close to one thousand dollars worth of funds to support our students with the activities for the day. In particular I would like to acknowledge Chanele from the Shire for her hard work and dedication towards our students. Additionally, we were inundated with parent and community helpers, to that we are truly grateful. Finally, thank you to Mrs Piggott, Mrs Blanco & Mrs Martin for their organisation and coordination of our Harmony Day event. The word around with our students was “we wish every day was Harmony Day.” This week, our Secondary students where recognised by their teachers with over 40 Acknowledgement Certificates for an excellent achievement on assessments and tasks or an A Grade on any assessment or assignment. These certificates were handed out today along with an ice-cream to every student who received one; congratulations to our students who received a certificate today – their hard work and effort needs to be acknowledged and celebrated. These photos have been posted to Facebook. Additionally, on the topic of our Secondary Students, Interim Reports are being sent home this week from our Secondary Teachers. Please keep an eye out for these in your child’s bag. If you have any questions about your child’s achievement or progress, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s subject or homeroom teacher via Seesaw. Finally, on behalf of all of the staff at Pannawonica Primary School, we wish everyone a safe and relaxing holiday and look forward to welcoming everyone back to school on Tuesday 20 May.

High School Pie Making Competition As part of our Harmony Day celebrations this year we wanted the high school students to have their own aged appropriate activities.

These activities were Origami with Megumi Marsh and Chanele Lucht, Megumi originates from Japan and Chanele has a Masters degree in Japanese. We were very lucky to have them share their

culture and experience with the students, they made rabbits, bunny faces and cranes with the students teaching them the

names in Japanese for these animals whilst they were creating origami. Then we had our very first Pie Baking Competition,

students were asked to use their culture as inspiration for a pie recipe. They then had to bake a pie to be judged by

Ben Jamieson, Leigh Piggott, Annette Hansen, Emma Jamieson and Rykia Blanco. It was a fiercely competitive bake off and we were impressed with the flavour combinations, the winners were 1st Place Savannah Ryalls, 2nd Place Chayse Jenkins and 3rd Place Toby Nelson, they were awarded trophies and a prize of

much loved chocolate. We look forward to many more fun

activities with the High School students in the near future.

Harmony Day Celebrations

On Tuesday 23 March, we held our annual Harmony Day celebrations, which saw parents, caregivers and community

members join us in our whole-school festivities. Students were in for a treat, making origami with Megumi Marsh and

Chanele Lucht; learning how to make fried rice with Rose and Paul Evangelista; making pot plants with Ms Garrett and our

Chaplain Mrs Martin; African dancing with Huda Mohamed; and heard stories about Maori culture, whilst singing and

dancing to Maori music with Karorina Kingi, Moana Harrison and Denise Berryman. The week prior, saw our high school

students celebrate Harmony Day by becoming masters in origami and having a pie making competition. Students were

tasked with researching and developing their own personalised pie recipe, then produce two pies each. The teaching staff

voted, with their wrought-iron stomachs, for the best pie-maker and proclaimed Savannah Ryalls in first place, followed

closely by Chayse Jenkins in second place and Toby Nelson in third place. The Harmony Day message “everyone

belongs” seeks to highlight Australia’s rich multi-cultural diversity, calling for inclusiveness, respect and belonging for all

Australians, regardless of cultural or linguistic backgrounds. Harmony Day also gave our school an opportunity to give back

to those in need, our free-dress day raised $158.70 for our sister-school in Cambodia, The Rokar Thom Nippon Foundation

School. Well done to Mrs Leigh Piggott, Mrs Talitha Martin and Mrs Rykia Blanco for all their hard work and efforts to make

Harmony Day a fun-filled event. We’d like to extend a huge THANK YOU to our wonderful parent and community ‘Helping

Heroes’ for giving up their time to join us; also, to our extraordinary P&C for organising the yummy lunch; and to the Shire

of Ashburton and Sodexo for their generous donations – we greatly appreciate their continued support!!
