Well, we have the privilege of “listening in” on Helmuth’s words to President and Mrs. Jones at a CIU dinner of the board of trustees and faculty. Listen closely! Dear Dr. Jones and dear Mrs. Jones, most precious guests and friends. I am here as a foreigner – a foreigner among friends. So I am feel- ing quite at home. It is my privilege to bring to the inauguration of Dr. Jones as president of CIU the best wishes and congratulations of the Korntal campus of CIU in Germany, from the rector, the Rev. Mr. Traugott Hopp personally, the faculty, the staff, and the students. It is their hope that under your leadership CIU will grow in strength and that our relation- ship will remain one of mutual confi- dence and trust so that there will be a strong partnership. “It is my honour to be in your midst this evening. 2 SUMMER 2008

By Joan DormanPresident, CIU Alumni Association

Your calendar probably looks likemine; 24 hours packed as full as

can be. I have a list with boxes tocheck off, but eating comes so natu-rally that I don’t bother writing itinto the schedule. I know when it istime.

Another item that does not appearon my list is my favorite time of day.I call it my “listening” time. Afteryears of trying to fit devotions intomy schedule, the struggle has ended.I live a life of clinging to the Lord,as I crave God speaking through myBible, devotional books and myprayer notebook. Prayer has becomemore what God has to say to me andmany desires pouring out of myheart to Him.

I usually begin with a devotionalbook. It’s like having dessert first.

Meat and vegetables are next as Godspeaks through His Word. Next iswhen I talk to God more, but stilllisten as I use a prayer notebook. Iconsider this time of day my bigmeal with Jesus. “Look! I stand atthe door and knock. If you hear mecalling and open the door, I willcome in, and we will share a meal asfriends.” Revelation 3:20 (NLT)

But some mornings are intenseand hectic. My “listening” time mayinclude only a few minutes of read-ing a devotional book or a fewScripture verses; like a breakfast baron the run. It is on those days I canrelax and draw from the overflow ofHis grace and love.

As I continue my conversationwith God throughout the day, Jesusis in me, and with me. We talkthrough the day. And after I pass outon my pillow, Jesus is still in me,with me and upon me. If I wake up

in the night, we can talk then too.I recently read the book by CIU

alumnus, Robert R. Cushman titled,“What If You Pray?” (WinepressPublishing). Vignettes of his life ofprayer from personal to corporate, from home to church, were refresh-ing. It is a great book to read as adaily devotional to encourage yourpursuit of conversation with the loverof our soul.

Student debt is making it hard formissionaries to pursue

their calling. As theprice of educationhas increased, sohas the anxiety ofstudents pursuingGod’s call over-seas. One familyheard of this phe-nomenon and decidedto do something about it.Working with CIU’s DevelopmentTeam, the Arnold Pent Scholarshipwas created to help those beingcalled to international church plant-ing to reach their destination sooner.

This scholarship is a little differentthan most. It is awarded to those

who are in their final year ofCIU or to CIU alumni.

To receive this scholar-ship, you must be pur-suing a church-plant-ing ministry interna-tionally and have an

outstanding student loanincurred while studying at

CIU. Once awarded, themoney is sent directly to the stu-dent’s loan provider.

To apply for this scholarship, please go to www.ciu.edu/college/financialaid and follow the links for

the Pent Scholarship. Send all completed forms to [email protected].

3SUMMER 2008

even be some thieves who want tosteal the best of your goods. So, be onyour watch!

“Most of all, a farmer needspatience, perseverance, steadfastness, and hope. But when you have doneeverything, you will realize in spite ofall your giftedness there is one thingyou cannot do: you cannot make itgrow, mature, and plenish. There arejust things beyond our control, and attimes that makes us despair, especiallyif one is as energetic and goal orient-ed as you and me.

“Let me mention how I came tolearn this lesson. It was in early May1990 at the end of the presidency ofDr. McQuilkin. Application had beenfiled with SACS* for having Korntalrecognized as a degree-granting site. The answer was delayed for manyweeks, and then the application wasrejected. For me that was not only theend of this application, it was goingto be the end of Korntal.

“On Sunday, somebody draggedme, grown up as Lutheran, steeped inreformed theology, to a big Baptistchurch in West Columbia. I sat thereduring Sunday school. It must havebeen good because the room wasfilled to the last chair. But to me itwas neither interesting, nor edifying, nor stimulating. So I leafed throughmy Bible and chanced on a little cardleading me to Jeremiah 32:26.

“I am the Lord, the God of allmankind. Is anything too hard for me?

“I looked for parallel verses.Jeremiah 32:17 Ah Lord God! Behold,Thou hast made the heavens and theearth by Thy great power and by Thineoutstretched arm! Nothing is too diffi-cult for Thee.

“Another is in Genesis 18:14 whenSarah was told she would conceive:Is anything too difficult for the Lord? Atthe appointed time I will return to you,at this time next year, and Sarah shallhave a son.

“At the annunciation of the birth of

Jesus found in Luke 1:37 For nothing will be impossible withGod.

“And after the turning away of the young ruler the same words occur, Luke 18:27 The thingsimpossible with men are possiblewith God.

“And as Jesus prays in Gethsemanehe closes with: Abba, everything ispossible with you” – [abba ho paterpanta dynata soi - even raising me fromthe dead] as recorded in Mark 14:36,and then Jesus goes forth to the cross.Only six times in the Bible, to myknowledge. But at that moment Iknew: It will happen. It took hardwork. Failures needed to be admittedand corrected. Changes needed to bemade, distrust overcome. But theLord brought it about. As you lookat it, it is a word for utmost criseswhen we are at our wits end, fortimes of utmost hopelessness. Youwill face such situations. Thenremember: Nothing is impossible with God.

“To this very day, I never told thisin public, well, not to anybody, noteven to my wife. I tell it tonight foryou, Dr. Jones – for times of crisesand despair.

“I do not say that it does not takehard labor, the advice and counsel offriends, even the admission of mis-takes. To ask for counsel and to admitmistakes, even sins, may be humiliat-ing. Nevertheless, you can do that.Because, you are under Christ, and tobe under Christ means to be underHis forgiveness privately and in office.

“At times the counsel you are givenmay be quite normal advice, perhapsnot even spiritual. There were twoChristian friends, both farmers. Theirfields side by side. One day they metthere. Both had potatoes on them. The one’s green, lush, you almost sawhow big they would be. The other’smiserable. So he asked, ‘Tell mebrother, what do I wrong. I come

almost daily and pray. But thosepotatoes just won't grow.' 'Well,' theother said, 'Your field does not needmore prayer, it just needs goodmanure.'

“Now God has given you onecounsellor and friend who is next toyou as no one else: Mrs. Jones. May Iturn to you? It is your task, Mrs.Jones, besides all the responsibilitiesand obligations as first lady, of whichI know next to nothing, to tell himwhat perhaps none other dares to tellhim as you may see what no one elsesees because you love him.

“And you, and now I say Bill; dowell to listen to her without gettingangry. I know that is not easy. If mywife tells me, I get angry. But aftertwo or three days I come back andhave to say, ‘I am sorry, darling. Youwere right, and now help me to get itright.’ And so the Lord grant youtogether a ministry of many years, aministry of sowing, a ministry of hardwork, a ministry where mistakes willoccur and need to be admitted andrectified, but most of all, a ministry ofharvesting.

“And, lest you forget it, there is atime to sow and a time to reap, and atime in between. I brought you someseed: beans, carrots, peas, radish, some flowers too, to make life morecolourful – and each needs to betreated its own way.

“The Lord bless you both, Dr. andMrs. Jones with a ministry of sowing,a ministry of hard work, at times tothe point of exhaustion, and a min-istry of reaping.

“The Lord will be with you.Emmanuel.”

4 SUMMER 2008

By Dr. David CashinProfessor, CIU Seminary & Schoolof Missions

The 2008 Missions StrategySeminar at Columbia

International University broughttogether a unique gathering ofmissions and church leadersseeking reconciliation and part-nership for the ultimate task offulfilling the Great Commission.Keynote speakers, Dr. MichaelJohnson, Pastor Randy Naborsand the Rev. Jack Gainesbrought together African-American pastors and traditionally white mission agen-cies in a new profound sense of reconciliation from thepast and commitment to a new level of partnership.Gaines demonstrated that reconciliation is at the core ofthe gospel. Nabors called the delegates to a new level ofunity in the churches as they embrace the task of recon-

ciling the nations to God.Johnson illustrated what thismeans for a new generation ofAfrican-American missionaries.Conference delegates took partin numerous breakout sessionsthat emphasized the “nuts andbolts” of mission recruitmentand partnership for missions. The high point of the confer-ence was a Friday night reconcil-iation service with repentanceand a foot-washing ceremony.Pastor Eric W. Davis of Word ofGod Church and Ministries in

Columbia, S.C. led the delegates in a communion serv-ice as he emphasized that we are one body, a people, anda royal priesthood called to reconcile all nations to God.Building on the momentum from the conference, thetheme of next year’s Missions Strategy Seminar will be“Awakening the Sleeping Giant, Mobilizing the AfricanAmerican Church for World Missions.”

“Together as One for God’s Greater Glory”A Review of the Annual Missions Strategy Seminar

By Cindy (Reeves) Watkins, aka “Mom” Class of 1998

Ireceived my Master’s degree in TEFL (TeachingEnglish as a Foreign Language) from Columbia

International University in 1998, with a heart for teachingoverseas. But God had other plans. As much as I longedto be in a hard place in foreign missions, God placed me inCharlotte, N.C. where, because of my degree, the worldcame to learn English in my classes for nine years. Alsoduring that time, I went on missions trips to India (threetimes), China, Argentina, and Rwanda. While having atremendous influence for the Kingdom, I still had feelingsof being a “second class” CIU graduate because I wasn’tusing my degree as a traditional missionary overseas.

Late last year, I planned to visit a couple of old class-mates in Columbia when we noticed my weekend visitcoincided with CIU’s Young Alumni Reunion Day(YARD). Skeptically, I went to the YARD event. Inalmost 10 years, I had returned to CIU only once. I wasglad I came back. I heard CIU President Dr. Bill Jonesarticulate his vision for CIU. It includes marketplace peo-

ple like me. In his presentation, he spoke of training more“Professional Christians” such as pastors and missionaries,in addition to “Christian Professionals” in the marketplace.I saw the tremendous difference in CIU today from whereit was in 1998 when I graduated, and I knew I wanted tobe a part of the future of my alma mater.

Also at YARD, I heard about a new initiative calledTEAM CIU which equips alumni to spread the wordabout CIU. It fits right in with where God is leading me.For the past two years, I had been pleading with God to

somehow let me have an impact on thisgeneration for missions locally and global-ly. I saw how TEAM CIU would be apart of God’s future for me as I impactthe nations with the message of Christ, bypointing students toward CIU. I see whyGod put that burden on my heart. I knowthat I can make a difference in bringing toCIU, students who are called to serveChrist in the United States, and thosecalled to international service.

On Feb. 15-16, I joined seven otheralumni for the first TEAM CIUWorkshop, a two-day seminar whichtrained alumni to represent CIU as volun-teer recruiters. I was blown away by thespirit of change, openness and genuinelove that wafted through every depart-ment of CIU. God is doing an excitingthing at CIU and I want to be a part of it.When I was challenged to talk with otheralumni who might be interested in help-ing recruit students, I realized why Godhad led me to attend the YARD. Not onlywas I excited about recruiting students forCIU, but also about making contact withalumni friends to share where CIU istoday. The whole weekend was also a timeof healing for me in so many ways. Now Ican build bridges with prospective stu-dents and be a catalyst of reconciliation inthe lives of fellow alumni who left feelinglike “second class” graduates.
