Wise Words Introduction


• James, the Lord’s brother, warns us of the dangers of the tongue.


James 1:26 (ESV) If anyone thinks he is religious and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, this person’s religion is worthless.


James 3:5–10 So also the tongue is a small member, yet it boasts of great things. How great a forest is set ablaze by such a small fire! 6 And the tongue is a fire, a world of unrighteousness. The tongue is set among our members, staining the whole body, setting on fire the entire course of life, and set on fire by hell.


James 3:5–10 7 For every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and sea creature, can be tamed and has been tamed by mankind, 8 but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.


James 3:5–10 9 With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse people who are made in the likeness of God. 10 From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers, these things ought not to be so.

Wise Words In the New Testament


• Peter sounds something like James – or the book of Proverbs.


1 Peter 3:8 Finally, all of you, have unity of mind, sympathy, brotherly love, a tender heart, and a humble mind. 3:9 Do not repay evil for evil or reviling for reviling, but on the contrary, bless, for to this you were called, that you may obtain a blessing. 3:10 For “Whoever desires to love life and see good days, let him keep his tongue from evil and his lips from speaking deceit.”


• Jesus reminds us to be mindful of our words when we pray.


Matthew 6:7 And when you pray, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do, for they think that they will be heard for their many words.6:8 Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.


• Jesus also demands that we pay attention to his words.• And afterwards be sure to act upon them.


Matthew 7:24 [Jesus said,] “Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 7:25 And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock.

• The opening of the Gospel of John gives us insight into the importance of words from God’s point of view.


John 1:1–14 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. 4 In him was life, and the life was the light of men. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.


John 1:1–14 6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. 7He came as a witness, to bear witness about the light, that all might believe through him. 8 He was not the light, but came to bear witness about the light.


John 1:1–14 9 The true light, which gives light to everyone, was coming into the world. 10 He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world did not know him.


John 1:1–14 11 He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him. 12 But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, 13 who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.

And what did Jesus do?Matthew 4:23 And he went throughout all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every affliction among the people.


Lastly, consider Paul’s view of his own life.Acts 20:24 But I do not account my life of any value nor as precious to myself, if only I may finish my course and the ministry that I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of God.

• James warned us that the tongue is a serious problem.• If we hope to spare ourselves a lifetime of trouble, we need

to know how to use it well.


• Here are some guidelines for us:1. Speak sensibly.2. Speak truthfully.3. Speak graciously.4. Speak carefully.5. Listen – don’t speak at all.


•Words are God’s chosen means to pass on his salvation.•We heard the good news and believed.•May our speech be used for his highest purposes.
