We are only in our infancy however on Wednesday afternoon the Winterfold staff attended a two hour MMA staff meeting where they examined how mindfulness could be further embedded into our curriculum. Please talk to your children about this new program and how it is impacting positively on them. Even try it out at home, many families have already started doing this! Two things that we seem to revisit at least once or twice a year are crosswalks and dogs on the Winterfold school site. We have recently been told that the crosswalk on York Street is not being used by a lot of students and students are darting out blindly from behind busses and cars, deliberately ignoring the crosswalk and attendant a few metres away. Please, if your children need to cross York St, they MUST use the crosswalk for their own safety, because the alternative is not worth imagining. Dogs numbers on the School site directly before and after school are on the increase and so is their excrement. Unless the dog you bring on site is a registered Companion Dog, please leave it tied up on the perimeters of the school whilst you collect your child. An email from a former parent of Winterfold Primary School: Dear Steve, Well - we really miss Winterfold but our child is absolutely soaring at high school! I think last years Year 6’s were so ready to step into their future, thanks to their preparation by your staff. I wanted to pass on some feedback I received from a curriculum leader at Fremantle College’s welcome event yesterday. Firstly, I hope you know that I sing the praises of Winterfold at every single opportunity. Yesterday, I had the pleasure of chatting with a curriculum leader who asked loads of questions about WPS, the sense of community and inclusion, and the focus not just on education but on acceptance of diversity amongst the kids, empowering them to be themselves and flourish rather than squashing creativity and individuality, whilst still providing the appropriate guidance and discipline to keep them on track. Their response was to say that it is quite apparent to the teachers at Fremantle College that Winterfold students bring something very special to the school, through their attitude, application and approach to learning and bettering themselves. They believed that, should local parents continue to support Fremantle College by sending their Winterfold children there, the standard and success of the school, and students generally, will lift immensely as a direct result of how they approach learning coming from Winterfold. The teachers family live outside of the catchment area for Winterfold but he and his wife are contemplating how to work around that when choosing ‘the right’ primary school for their 4 year old. I think I gave him pause for thought. I realised that, coming from a high school teacher, these comments were huge! It made me feel very proud to have sent my child to Winterfold, and also to have contributed/given back in some small way by of serving on the School Board and improving road safety around the school zone. Knowing we are making good choices for our kids is a victory in this day and age. So… please keep doing what you do and please feel free to circulate this feedback as you see fit because I think it’s outstanding, and something that should be celebrated.

Uniform Shop The Uniform Shop is open on Tuesdays during

Term 1 - 8.15am - 9am The lost property box, located in the Under Cover Area, is overflowing with uniform items, some of which have student names on them. Please have a look, there may be something that belongs to your child.

P&C Canteen News - Bins!Bins!Bins!

Thanks to the generous donations from the Sustainability Committee and the wonderful Britton-Hull family, the canteen has made a huge step forward to improving our waste management. We now have a dedicated recycling bin with regular collection. Combining this with the food waste bin, which the students add to the composting and worm farm, our waste going to landfill has been reduced by half! Again, a huge thank you to the Britton-Hull family for their donation.

Your Move On Friday, 18 February, Room 8 Students did a Your Move whole school survey on how students came to school that day. Your Move is a program to promote using the car less and walking or riding more. Winterfold must carry out these surveys twice a year to maintain our registration and be able to earn rewards. Recently, we achieved Bronze status which opened up more rewards for us to access - we are now aiming to achieve the silver! We found that coming to school by car was down 5% since November, 2018. However, this means that we still have 186 of the 300 students surveyed coming by car. To help promote fume free ways to come to school Room 8 kicked off the year of assemblies with a Your Move presentation. It featured ‘The Great Debate’ with the topic of ‘We Should All Come To School by Car’, which was convincingly won by the opposing team who highlighted the benefits would be reduction in traffic congestion at the front of the school, health benefits of exercising on the way to school and the benefits to the environment. There were also skits about being dropped off a few streets away and walking the rest and getting a group together to ride or walk to school. In between we had ads for Wilma’s Walkers – the best walking shoes, and Helga’s Helmets – safe and cool, as well as an informative ad about crossing the road. We are hoping that this will promote fume free transport to school for the rest of the year. Submitted by Elise, Shoni and Aiden, Room 8

Sustainability Day - Friday, 22 March What does it mean to be 'more sustainable'? Basically it means being responsible citizens by maintaining the resources on our planet so that future generations can use them March is a big month environmentally. It includes Clean up Australia, Harmony Day, Earth Hour, International Day of Forests and World Water Day. Winterfold is holding a whole school sustainability day on Friday, 22 March, which also happens to be World Water Day - water for all by 2030. Throughout the day students will be fortunate to watch an environmentally friendly assembly, have an incursion about water, take part in block activities to make them aware of ways to become more sustainable and help clean up areas of our school. Students - dress up your bike/scooter day is happening on Friday, 22 March, at 8am on the netball courts. Get creative, start designing and get moving. Cycle or scooter to school with your brilliant bikes/sensational scooters and parade your design around the netball court. Teachers and Student Leaders will be judging the bikes before the assembly and winners will be notified during the assembly that day.

Leadership Workshop 2019

What does it mean to be a leader? This is an important question I asked our student leaders last week as we spent a half day focusing on developing their role in the school. After looking at some quotes from famous authors and leaders, these are some of the ideas and comments they came up with: Being kind, helpful and trustworthy Inspiring others – bringing out the best in others Bringing people together to achieve something Making something happen, instead of waiting for

someone else to do it The focus of the workshop was to encourage students to consider their character as leaders, and to identify their skills and strengths. Students learnt about how they, as a unique individual with particular strengths, contribute to the team and the larger story of student leadership at our school. This year, our two groups of leaders – The House of Education, and The House of Recreation, will plan and implement events for our school community in terms two and three. Stay tuned for more information! All the best, Janina Chaplain

Australia Water Association – National Water Week Colouring Competition Winners

announced!

Congratulations Otis Gresele - Room 10

Winterfold Primary School participated in The Australian Water Association’s National Water Week Colouring Competition in October 2018. There was an overwhelming number of entries. Otis was one of four national winners receiving a $100 Riot Art and Craft voucher. Well done to all participants!

Kindy News

The newest children to join our wonderful school are settling in to the Kindergarten very well indeed and we are enjoying getting to know them and their families. We would like to thank all those families who so kindly donated a Schleich Animal to our collection. We are hoping that once everyone has settled in a little more we will be able to introduce the animals into the classroom in small, habitat based collections. We hope that through play, the children will learn more about the natural world, the differing and often quite specific needs of the animals and where they live. We are looking forward to a lovely year! Lisa Moore

Former Winterfold Student Achievement

Seton College have advised us of a wonderful achievement from a former Winterfold Student, Lili Schmah. This year Lili received an Early Entry Offer to Notre Dame University and will study a Bachelor of Biomedical Science. She is sure to fare well in this course with her excellent WACE Score of 91.7. Her results were also acknowledged with a Certificate of Distinction from the School Curriculum Standards Authority. Lili has been an excellent student over the years, always hardworking and conscientious – we are proud of her achievements at Seton. Winterfold are very proud of you too Lili. Well Done!

Talk For Writing - Literacy Looking at settings within narratives has been our ‘Talk for Writing’ focus across the middle and upper school during the past month. Below is an example of how students have learnt to ‘show, not tell’ a setting using their senses. The dreaded cane lies on the pale wooden desk of the teacher, waiting silently for someone to get in trouble. The teacher stalks slowly around the classroom, watching, waiting and listening. Waiting for someone to talk. Waiting like a lion about to pounce on its prey. Jars filled with black ink stand still on the children’s desks. The wooden chairs creak under the weight of the children. The dry, powdery smell of chalk fills the room as the teacher starts to drag the chalk across the blackboard. The children start to talk. The teacher whips around, his eyes narrowing. He raises his bony hand, then drags his fingernails slowly down the chalkboard. The children immediately fall silent as a horrible scratching sound fills the dim, dusty classroom. Written Anika Evans Year 6 Last week Anika was informed that she had won the 2019 Redgum Book Club Young Writers’ Award– Celebrating the Mystical and Unique. Her short story ‘Dingo with the Power of Silver’ was seen to be a magical story of strength and growth, the power of true belief and creating an exciting new future. Her story will be illustrated and published by Redgum Book Club for distribution throughout Australia in 2020. We are very proud of Anika’s achievement and are looking forward to seeing her presented with her prize at a future assembly. Kylie Bonser Literacy Specialist Teacher
