Even though we did not win the competition we competed exceptionally well considering we were playing against students that play cricket every weekend for their own clubs. According to Mr Wotherspoon our Year 3 and 4 students, who have hardly ever picked up a bat, let alone field and bowl, participated with a lot of heart and soul that we’ve come to expect from Winterfold students. All our students had a great day, were very well behaved, and returned to school sporting smiles from ear to ear. Your child would have already brought home a letter outlining that in lieu of the P&C traditionally conducting a Christmas Raffle they will be organising a food hamper collection for the disadvantaged and ‘in-need’ clients of St Patrick’s Community Support Centre in Fremantle. With so many social programs having their funding cut, the reliance on community and philanthropic organisations is becoming more and more important. Therefore if your family can afford any of the items suggested on the reverse side of your letter then it will be gratefully received by the customers who are in need of St Patrick’s services. We quite rightly on a regular basis comment and congratulate the Winterfold P&C on their commitment to the betterment of each and every Winterfold student. However we rarely discuss the great job that the Winterfold School Board puts towards the strategic management of the Winterfold PS. Currently the Board is made up of 9 members containing a mix of community and Winterfold staff representatives. Being on any Board is akin to a juggling act where they assist in the development and endorsement of the School Budget, they are briefed on the School’s performance, they sign off on the Annual Report and they are required to ratify amended or new School policies. This is all at the strategic level however for the Board to understand what they are signing or ratifying they must also need to have a bit of a handle on the Operational side of the school also; however no Board, public or private, have any say on the operations of any organisation – hence the juggling nature of being a Board member – that is; is it a strategic matter or is it an operational matter? P&C News Christmas Hamper Collection: This year, instead of the traditional Christmas raffle, the P&C will be organising a food hamper collection for St Patrick’s Community Support Centre in Fremantle. Hopefully you will have received a letter by now. If not one can be obtained at the office. A collection box will be in each classroom. The box will also contain a list similar to the list on the attached letter. If you are interested in donating to your class’s hamper please put your child’s name against an item and bring place it in the box before Thursday, 29 November. We are aiming for each class to make one hamper but please feel free to donate more if you are keen. The hampers have a set list of items so that St Pat’s can ensure all of their clients get a similar hamper. Extra to each hamper we will be collecting items such as Christmas puddings/cake and stationery items (colouring books, books, textas etc). These extra items will be provided to St Pats so that they can include them in their “family” baskets. The stationery items are small gift items for kids. If you have any questions please speak with Janina, our Chaplain, your room coordinator, Sarah 0419 888 244 or email: [email protected] School Disco: The P&C are busy organising the upcoming school disco, details below. If you would like to get involved and volunteer, please go to the following ling and put your name down. https://www.volunteersignup.org/JFH8D

Library Borrowing and Scholastic Book Club

Orders from Issue 7 have gone home this week. The last issue for the year, Issue 8, has been distributed to students and orders are due by Friday, 23 November. Week 6 will be the last opportunity for students to borrow books from our Library. All library books are to be returned by Friday, 23 November, please.

Your Move

On Wednesday,7 November, students from Room 8 conducted a Your Move Transport Survey of students from Pre Primary to Year 6. The survey found that 30% more students are walking and 66% more students are cycling to school than the previous year. However, there are still 55% of students travelling to school in cars. Not only does the number of cars cause congestion outside the school but also contributes to pollution. We would like to see more students walking or riding to school and will be looking at ways we can encourage this in the future. To help with this a Your Move suggestion box has been put next to the Highway Hero box for students to submit their suggestions on ways to promote active transport. Both these boxes are located in the foyer outside the staffroom and parents are also welcome to make suggestions. Submitted by Room 8

VOLUNTARY CONTRIBUTIONS

It’s not too late to pay your School 2018 Voluntary Contributions and Charges of $60.00 per child and the P&C Voluntary Contribution of $20 per child. Our collection rates this year are not fantastic –

Only 50% of our 40 Kindy families have paid

With 59% of our 51 Pre Primary families paying and

Only 53% of our 262 Primary families paying

Thank you to the families who have already paid your contribution has been used to further enhance your child’s education.

This week is Planet Ark’s National Recycling Week,

so make sure you do your bit to Recycle Right…

Changes to the Yellow-Topped Bin For most councils in the Perth Metropolitan Area there have been changes regarding what can and can’t be recycled in your yellow-topped bin. These changes are part of an effort to try and reduce contamination and make recycling easier for everyone to understand. The major changes are: Aerosol cans and soft plastics can no longer be placed into the yellow-topped recycling bin A good test to see if it’s a soft plastic is the ‘scrunch test’ – if you can scrunch the plastic item up into a ball then it can be taken to a REDcycle soft plastic collection bin. The closest REDCycle drop off point is the Woolworths supermarket at South Fremantle Market Place on Hampton Road.

Recycling Boxes have a new home

Our recycling boxes, for batteries and oral care items, have been moved to the Under Cover Area for easy drop off of items.

T20 Cricket

On Thursday, 8 November, three Winterfold Cricket Teams, travelled north of the river to Yokine Reserve to participate in the 2018 T20 Blast Regional Finals. Our three Teams qualified due to winning the pennants at our district carnival earlier in the year. It was a beautiful day for cricket and all of our students were buzzing and hopeful on the bus journey. We arrived to a scene of at least 30 cricket grounds set up by the WACA on the expansive reserve. All of our teams started well, the competition was tough and the skill level had gone up. Our Teams battled well throughout the day and enjoyed many highlights. Our Girls Team 1 enjoyed two victories and unfortunately lost two tight games which meant they just missed out on the state finals at the WACA. Our Boys Team had some competitive performances and many individual highlights such as Larry hitting sixes in his first two games, Blake took two wickets in one over and TeTane took a spectacular catch in the field. Our Girls Team 2 were competitive and were really enjoying the experience. All together it was a fantastic experience and Winterfold Primary School is proud to have been part of the last three T20 Regional Finals. Submitted by Mr Wotherspoon

Winterfold Students Playing Tennis On Friday, 9 November, a small team of four students, Milos, Caitlin, Shayla and Destiny, represented Winterfold Primary School in an Orange Ball Tennis Tournament at the Mike Gill Tennis Academy at the Next Generation Gym in Bibra Lake. This was the first time Winterfold had participated in this tournament and it was a good opportunity for some of our budding tennis players to enjoy some friendly semi-competitive matches. We were very proud of Shayla who received the prize for Best Sportsmanship throughout the event. All players received prize packs and had a chance to get a photo with the Hopman Cup.
