On the last Thursday of Term 1 our Year 6 Students attended the City of Cockburn ANZAC Youth Parade, where they took with them a beautiful wreath which they placed at the RSL Memorial Park in Spearwood. Last Friday, Winterfold conducted its own ANZAC ceremony where a great deal of respect was observed by students and staff alike. Winterfold would like to thank all the parents that contributed flowers on the day, they were well received and greatly appreciated. Our PE and Health Teacher Mr Meldrum has just started to reintroduce our Social, Emotional Learning program called Highway Heroes. Currently he is discussing with students ‘resiliency’. Resilience is important for a number of reasons; it enables us to develop mechanisms for protection against experiences which could be overwhelming, it helps us to maintain balance in our lives during difficult or stressful periods of time, and can also protect us from the development of some mental health difficulties. As adults we can help to promote the building of resilience by role modelling coping skills, teaching problem-solving and assisting kids to solve their own problems when they arise. As such, School staff and you as parents play an important role in building resilience in children. Please, when you get a moment, talk to your child(ren) about what they are learning in their Highway Heroes’ lessons. Our Mindfulness Meditation sessions are powering on with many students feeling a great deal of benefits from participating in the two sessions per day. Reports back from our Teachers is that after each Mindful session, students are calm and ready to work, which means instruction time has increased and students are more ‘present’ and ready to absorb new information. Just a gentle reminder as we move into the colder months, students will be starting to wear the Winterfold zip up jacket, please ensure that you have correctly labelled this piece of clothing as many students by the end of play have discarded the jacket WINTERFOLD WORDS Attendance for last 10 days: 90.5% Lates: 141 (14 per day!) and have left it somewhere in the playground. It makes it so much easier to reunite the student and jacket when their name is on it. NAPLAN will be occurring over the next fortnight, if you have a student in either Years 3 or 5, please ensure they get plenty of sleep, eat well, but above all tell them not to stress about the tests too much. Whether the outcome is good, bad or ugly is irrelevant, they will still graduate year 12, and go on to positive lives because NAPLAN has never affected or shaped anyone’s lives. Cheers, The Admin Team. Waarkarl Art Work—Help Needed On Wednesday, 27 June 2018, Winterfold held NAIDOC Day and our students created an amazing piece of art with the help of local artist Kamsani. P&C Canteen News

This week sees the start of our new Winter menu for Terms 2 and 3 and before we get to that we need to announce the winners of the Kitchen Whiz competition for 2019! The Senior Winner is Cohen Clifford with his Berry Damper and the Junior Winner is Asha Hilton for her delicious Butter Chicken. We had so many great entries that we have actually added a couple more to the menu. Caitlyn Edwards submitted Supreme Cuisine Noodles and Zach Wogandt entered Cheesy Cauliflower Soup. The new menu is attached to this weeks newsletter and hard copies are available at the canteen counter or the office. Bon Appetit!

Here is the perfect way to celebrate Mothers’ Day. Give mum the VIP treatment with an Entertainment Book. Order online at www.entbook.com.au/87o112

Flora and Forage Swap

Next Swap Table – Wednesday, 15 May The Winterfold Flora and Forage Swap is on again Wednesday, 15 May, 8.00am - 9.00am and will be held again in Week 7 of Term 2. If you haven’t been before, the idea is to bring along any home produce – herbs/cuttings/plants/vegies or home-made items to share and swap – can be anything really. Some ideas are parsley, succulents, sour-dough bread, soap or just your ideas! You can also make a small donation to P&C sustainability initiatives or just come and say hello and find out what’s happening around sustainability in the school. We will have some ideas on home cleaning products that are plastic free and easy to make! We are also starting a local business register, so if you have a small business and would like to get your name and email down, we’ll have a table where you can sign up. Any questions? Contact Biggi on 0475 097 857 or Michelle on 0420 734 578. This project is by the Sustainability Team – a joint team of teachers working on the Climate Clever initiative and the P&C Sustainability sub-committee.

Congratulations Winterfold P&C Canteen

Our amazing canteen is to be again congratulated for achieving five star accreditation for StarCAP2, for the 6th consecutive year. A huge achievement by Kym and her merry team of workers and volunteers.

ANZAC Art Room 7 and 8 Students, who are not involved in the production rehearsals, joined together to do some ANZAC art. It was a simple activity which involved talking about the significance of ANZAC Day then looking at some pictures of poppies and describing their features. Students then went to the Art Room and painted poppies over newspaper headlines about the war being over. Even though it was a simple activity the results were quite striking!

MATHEMATICS AT WINTERFOLD

The Year 5 Students from Room 7 have been investigating 3D shapes and their corresponding nets. Recently, the students completed a challenge that involved drawing a net for an irregular shape and constructing it. Room 7 have also been exploring measurement using cubes to calculate the volume of shapes.

Winterfold Production 2019 We are seeking parents or carers who are interested in assisting with costumes, props and set design for this year’s production. So if you are handy with a sewing machine or power tools, enjoy using a paint brush or can choreograph please come along to our parent volunteer meeting on Wednesday, 29 May, at 3pm in the Numeracy and Literacy Room. Kind Regards, Jill Rickers and Leanne Hill

Please Pick Up your Dogs Poo

It's disappointing to see the amount of dog poo left on our oval. This is a real problem for students and staff during morning fitness, sport lessons, recess and lunch. But they say it's the squeaky wheel that gets the grease so we squeaked and the Fremantle Rangers have installed a dog poo bag station near the nature playground. If you bring your dogs onto our oval please be considerate and clean up after them. Thank you.

Thank You!

Thank you to Natasha, mum of Detroit Room 3, for making Winterfold even more beautiful over the holidays by kindly donating her time and talent to complete some artwork at the front of the school. We love it!

Woolworths Earn & Learn 2019

Winterfold are excited to be taking part in the 2019 Woolworths Earn & Learn program.

Last year, we were able to purchase some great resources with the points we earned, thanks to you.

From the beginning of May until the end of June 2019, you can collect stickers at Woolworths Supermarkets that go towards Earn & Learn points. For every $10 you spend at Woolworths you will receive a sticker. These stickers can then be given to your children to collect on a special sticker sheet which has been sent home today. Once it is completed, they can simply bring it back here to school or you can drop them into your local Woolworths collection box.

The more points we earn, the more we can redeem from a choice of over 10,000 educational resources including Mathematics and English resources, Art & Crafts materials and much, much more!

Well Done Laura! Our lovely Librarian, Laura and her ‘Con Mama’ Team completed the 42 km walk in 8 hours last weekend. Together they have raised a huge total of $12,000 which will be donated to the Parkins Institute in Perth. Laura would like to thank everyone for their donations and support.

Your Move Committee

It is with great excitement that the Your Move Committee announces the instalment of our scooter rack! This rack holds twelve scooters that can be locked up - you just need to provide your own padlock. We are also looking at ways to reduce the traffic at the front of the school. With this in mind, we would like to ask all parents to complete a short online survey to help us with our planning. There are six easy questions and it should only take you about 2 minutes to complete. Just copy the link below into your browser. https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/H2XW7KV

Thank you.
