This fall, the Capital Teaching Residency (CTR) hosted a two-day symposium to share best practices in alterna-tive teacher preparation programs with other high-performing charter schools and partner organizations from across the country. Participants included representatives from 15 KIPP regions, D.C. charter schools like DC Prep and Friendship, and national CMOs from across the country like Uncommon Schools (MA, NY, NJ), IDEA (TX), and Collegiate Academies (LA). Attendees had the opportunity to not only learn more about the Capital Teach-ing Residency model, but also to hear from other teacher preparation programs from both inside and outside of the KIPP network. The hope is that these shared conversations and connections will lead to an increase in the number of highly effective teacher preparation programs across the country. Kudos to CTR for starting the conversation!

kipp dc schools achieve tier 1 status once again

solar power comes to the douglass campus

For the third year in a row, every eligible KIPP DC school (KEY, AIM, WILL, Promise, and KCP) received a Tier 1 rating on the D.C. Public Charter School Board’s Performance Management Framework (PMF). KIPP DC contin-ues to be the largest charter school network to have all of its schools rated as Tier 1. Unlike the DC CAS score reports, which only measure absolute performance, the PMF takes into account multiple measures, specifically around growth over time and high school and college readiness, to more holistically evaluate each school.

Some additional highlights from the 2013 PMF include:• KIPP DC schools represent nearly 20% of all Tier I schools in 2013. • KIPP DC KEY Academy achieved the highest PMF score of all schools in the city -- 91%. • KIPP DC Promise Academy had the highest median growth percentile in both reading and math on the DC

CAS.• KIPP DC AIM Academy had the highest median growth percentile in math of any middle or high school. • KIPP DC AIM, WILL, and College Preparatory were recognized for being both high-quality and serving a high

proportion of Special Education students.

This November, KIPP DC’s Douglass Campus celebrated the grand opening of its new solar energy facility with the organizations that made it possible: Volt Energy, Sol Systems, and Washington Gas Energy Systems. Dot Harris, Director of the Office of Economic Impact and Diversity at the U.S. Department of Energy, delivered keynote remarks and commended KIPP DC for taking significant steps to reduce greenhouse gases and educate students about environmental sustainability. The 227 kW solar energy system consists of solar carports and rooftop solar panels that will allow KIPP DC to reduce its electricity costs and utilize sustainable energy.

KIPP DC’s annual March Madness event at Nationals Park will take place on Thursday, March 20th! Join us for an action-packed evening of fun with the NCAA men’s basketball games and a behind-the-scenes experience at Nationals Park. Check out the clubhouse, batting cages, dugout, media room, and more, while you enjoy great food, drinks, and company!

All of the proceeds from this year’s event will enable us to provide high-quality athletic facilities at the new Webb Campus in Ward 5, including the renovation of Trinidad Athletic Field and the construction of a new gym.
