News Snapshot

A look at some of the key projects

and events we’ve worked on this

quarter.

At HamsonJPA, the education sector represents a valued and large part of our business. This year, we have continued to deliver a range of planned maintenance works on schools for East Sussex, Hampshire, Kent and Surrey County Councils:

HampshireChiltern Primary School in Basingstoke is a key project with Hampshire County Council. Providing multi-disciplinary design and contract management services from inception to completion of the projects, the works include removal of the existing facades and associated single glazed windows and asbestos containing curtain walling - replacing with a modular cladding system. Felt covered roofs are being insulated and overlaid with objectives of extending the lifespan and transforming the thermal efficiency of the buildings.

East SussexKey maintenance projects for East Sussex County Council have this year seen HamsonJPAdeliver a number of contracts including hot and cold water replacement, building and extension services for schools.

KentAmong many others, Joy Lane Primary School, Sandwich Junior School, NoningtonPrimary School, St Nicholas at Wade Primary School and Minister-in-Thanet Primary School represent five major school projects with Kent County Council for HamsonJPA. With a combined contract value in excess of £1.2million, each project is providing essential maintenance and expansion works for the education facilities. Services include project management, Mechanical & Electrical Design, building surveying and sustainable building engineering.

SurreyContracted through NPS, parent-company to HamsonJPA, a 14-project programme worth more than £30million is now well underway for Surrey County Council. Involving Quantity Surveying and M&E Service teams, the programme is comprised of primary school expansions and refurbishment.

HamsonJPA has invested in a rolling programme to train even more engineers in Revit

MEP to provide increased intelligent design capability. The software enables our

mechanical, electrical and public health engineers to create complex building systems

accurately and efficiently with Building Information Modelling (BIM).

Recognising the increasing importance and necessity to design comfortable buildings that

consume less energy, HamsonJPA has invested in a training initiative to diversify

engineers’ skills using dynamic building performance modelling software to test different

options, passive solutions, compare renewable and low carbon strategies and evaluate

energy use, CO2 emissions & occupant comfort.

We hold regular Continuing Professional Development (CPD) events in-house, accredited

by CIBSE, to improve and broaden the skill of our staff.

Thriving Exeter

HamsonJPA TeamFollowing the success of the award winning Zero-Carbon school design in Exeter (Montgomery School featured in the previous newsletter), we appointed an Associate Director for the Exeter office to increase our presence in the local market. James Laughlin was appointed in June 2013 and has since recruited three key members of staff to add to the team.

James has shaped the department to support and drive the BIM environment to realise the true value from the process. The Exeter office is now very active with schools, libraries and care home new build and refurbishment projects. We provide Building Physics, BIM and specialist lighting design services to complement the traditional design services. The teams core principles are early design development and options testing, and Holistic Project team collaboration. This allows the team to incorporate Engineering into the architecture and provide sustainable buildings that people want to use.
