Introduction

Last year I wrote in this introduction how delighted we were that the West London Business Awards had so quickly established themselves as a feature of the West London landscape. Well, it is now my very pleasant duty to report that the profile of the Awards has grown even faster and bigger than we could have ever dared to imagine. In this, just our third year, we have attracted even more sponsors, more entries and have more people attending the celebration dinner. But even more importantly, the quality of the applications has taken a significant upward hike this year. These Awards now demonstrate what great businesses – of all sizes and across all sectors – we really do have in West London.

I would like to thank my fellow judges for generously giving of their time and expertise; the sponsors, without whom these Awards literally could not happen; and all the applicants, whether they were successful or not on this occasion. Thanks also to Ross Sturley and his team for organising the Awards and also to Andrew Dakers and the WLB team for their support.

Those of us who work in West London can look to the future with a considerable degree of confidence. We await eagerly the Prime Minister making the right decision regarding expansion at Heathrow - which alongside the Old Oak Common and Park Royal developments and those at Earls Court, Nestle, the Old Vinyl Factory, RAF Uxbridge, the Southall Gasworks, Stockley Park, Wembley and White City really will make West London the place to be and do business!

They have achieved stunning revenue growth through providing over 300 clients large and small with savings in the millions on energy bills, and assistance in meeting energy savings compliance regulations.


Retail Business of the Year

WinnerParker Cars

It’s not a shop, but Parker Cars are a retailer of transport services, selling 1.2million journeys a year. They are growing fast, organically and by acquisition, and owe this to their focus on service quality. Their comprehensive training ensures standards continue to exceed expectations, and their deployment of technology is right in line with the retailer’s maxim “innovate or die”. It enables them to deliver to customers services such as driver tracking, or an annual carbon dioxide report.

Judges comment: “Their standards are impressive – and audited – and they are continuing to grow while innovating with apps, and a growing green fleet. Their future looks even brighter!”

Locata develops and provides software services for local authorities and housing associations across the UK. It helps them manage who lives where, while meeting complex regulatory compliance. They won this category last year, but have not rested on their laurels since. They have introduced significant new product this year – social lettings agency management, an enhanced homelessness tool, and healthchecks which have saved customers over £500,000. Though they are small, and compete with much larger beasts, they are successful and growing, through innovation and determination!

Judges comment: “Their strategy is elegant, and well formed. Built on innovation, they are well palced to keep expanding.”

Hospitality Business of the Year

Winner Dorsett Hotel

Opening in June 2014, Dorsett Shepherds Bush has gone from strength to strength, helping to raise the profile of Shepherds Bush with its architecturally stunning hotel which is gaining a reputation for delivering world class service. Monthly revenues have more than doubled in the last 12 months, and occupancy is now well above 90% - an amazing achievement in such a short time. Despite being an international brand, they are rooted in their community, with many of their staff recruited from the local area, and a programme of charitable giving and local engagement.

Judges said: “A fantastic addition to Shepherds Bush, truly marvelous progress since opening.”

Food and Drink Business of the Year

Winner

Kolak are one of the most successful snack manufacturers in the market place. The business supplies the majority of the major multiples with Kolak branded and retailer own label snacks. In the last year they have grown turnover through the £100million barrier, and created 350 new jobs, taking their total staff to over 1000. This amazing and continued growth comes from investment in technology, with a new snacks plant brought into operation in 2015, and a laser-like focus on process and product quality.

Judges said: “It’s the planning that’s so impressive – they are so strong that success is natural”.

Property and Construction Business of the Year

WinnerA2Dominion is a leading housing provider and property developer with a strong presence in west London, providing homes to thousands of residents in west London boroughs, and now with a new HQ in West Ealing, opened this year, and home to 300 employees. As a not-for-profit property business, they reinvest surpluses into building more new homes and delivering services. They have 96% customer happiness, their turnover is up 10% and the surplus nearly £20m ahead of target – they have had a stellar year!

Judges said: “Housing – particularly affordable housing - is a critical issue for West London, and these guys are making a real contribution, and doing it brilliantly!”

Creative Industries Business of the Year

Winner

Hub-Box

Born out of the founders’ frustrations at repeatedly missing parcel deliveries while out at work, over just nine months HubBox has built, grown and managed a fully operational network of 70 “Collect Points” in dry cleaners, convenience stores and local gyms. The retailers involved get promotion for their businesses as well as getting paid to handle the parcels – around £100 a month on average - while the customers get a convenient way of having stuff delivered. Very clever indeed!Judges comment: “Great product,

fills a gap in market and supports local retailers.”

Alma help companies claim tax breaks on their R&D work, so they need to understand innovation! Based in Hammersmith, they work with a broad range of businesses, from start-ups to FTSE-100 firms. They have claimed £100m of tax benefits for their UK clients to date, as well as supporting them to apply for, and manage, European innovation funding. This year their revenues have grown nearly 50%, and customer retention risen to 94%, through delivering a high quality, differentiated service offering underpinned by quality training through their ‘Alma University’.

This is a tough category to win and judge. You need to really stand out in a diverse field, and Beond certainly managed that. Their energy consultancy is growing rapidly, and they deliver real savings and business advantage to a wide range of customers.

AirSea Packing

AirSea Packing are a “white glove” shipping company providing packing, shipping, storage, transportation and delivery services of art, antiques, design furniture and all other high value/fragile items that require a specialist touch. The company was established in 1966 and now has offices in London, Paris, New York, Miami, Dallas, Phoenix and Los Angeles. Turnover grew 16% year on year – spectacular performance in a tough market, and testament to service quality and innovation.

Judges comment: “The excellent evidence made judging straightforward – we like the pro-active business plans and the increasingly wide range of services, as well as the strong growth in staff”.

Judges comment: “The Fine Art Services initiative has really paid off - 120 new clients and a 16% increase in turnover is very solid indeed!”

Westfield has committed to operating more efficiently, using energy more wisely, producing less waste, and making the most of new technology to minimise impact on the environment. They have seven overarching environmental goals governing their activity including raising awareness of environmental issues among staff and contractors as well as conserving resources. Among other achievements they have recently been awarded ISO14001 accreditation for their environmental management system, and, even with 375 retailers generating around 5,000 tonnes of waste annually, they continue to achieve zero-waste-to-landfill.

Judges comment: “Their commitment is impressive and real, and their actions mean that not only they, but all their tenants use resources more wisely – an exemplar”.

A2Dominion take CSR seriously. They are dedicated to investing in the communities in which they operates, through charitable giving, and through community support. This year they have managed 15% increase in staff charitable fundraising, while growing their corporate charitable donations fund to £50,000 a year. They also reinvest in the communities they build in, with initiative like their Be Inspired youth enterprise programme, supporting A2Dominion residents aged 14-30 with education, training and employment opportunities, which helped 80 young people in the last year and awarded £15,000 to five young entrepreneurs.

Judges comment: “Fantastic ideas - engaging with the local community, assisting young entrepeneurs with their future growth, engaging in the community with their Digital DIY scheme, amazing employment and training services, and we loved the Green Champions!”

They have grown their revenues by 70% through a ruthless focus on delivering best-in-class cloud computing, and through a real focus on process engineering to achieve better quality. Westfield London

HammersmithLondon – the Business Improvement District for Hammersmith town centre – has hosted a summer festival for a few years now. It aims to increase footfall and dwell time for the town centre, allowing its retailers to grow sales, and giving local workers something different to do at lunchtime and during breaks. It’s acknowledged as an exemplar programme, and this year delivered a record 8500 people, with over half from outside the local area – a real boost for local traders!

Judges comment: “We loved the creativity and enthusiasm here – and the way that ideas like the Ambassador – a staff member on hand to assist festival goers – run through the programme.”

Westfield’s brilliant ‘We are fashion’ campaign generated 38,000 visitors to the key event, and helped at least one retailer nearly double sales. It’s big and bold and reaffirmed Westfield as west London’s key fashion location.

Judges comment: “This was a great campaign which seriously overperformed – big, bold, and beautiful. We love it!”

Winner

Westfield LondonJudges choose the winner of this award from among the other category winners – it can’t be entered directly. So this choice is both interesting and tough. Comparing a wide range of very different businesses can be difficult, but judges were this year unanimous in their choice.Westfield London is a huge success in and of itself, but that rubs off on a wide range of businesses. It works hard for its tenants, of course, but its presence inspires investment in Shepherds Bush – which has a remarkable amount of activity – and in West London as a whole.It provides a huge amount of employment – much of it for local people who have found new opportunity and new aspirations.All in all, Westfield is a powerful catalyst for good in West London!
