Toscana This is the home of not only six of the country's DOCG wines, but also the birthplace of the IGT Super Tuscans. These hills offer aspects that allow the grapes to express the best varietal characteristics. From Brunello and Vino Nobile to Chianti itself, Sangiovese has its true home in Tuscany. Since the late 60s, we have seen the introduction of international grape varieties, alongwith the new wine making tecniques.

Italian Red Wine

Vino Nobile di Montepulciano

One of Italy's classic red wines, and has unquestionably helped Tuscany retain its privilegedplace on the world wine map. It comes from the vineyards which surround Montepulciano, apicturesque hill town 25 miles (40km) southeast of Siena, southeastern Tuscany. Viticulture heredates back many centuries to Etruscan times. During the 15th century, the local wine was afavorite among the local Sienese aristocracy, and in the 16th century it was revered by PopePaul III, who spoke of the wine's excellent qualities.

Chianti

In addition to splendid landscapes, Chianti's popularity is also directly tied to its fine red winesproduced in the region and known generally as Chianti wine. The Chianti region, extendingroughly over the two main city provinces of Florence and Siena. Chianti is characterized by a combination of almost perfect weather and soil that produces a precious wine which is considered one of the best wines around the world.

The tradition of cultivating vines in Chianti goes back a long time in history, back to the Etruscans that inhabited the area before the Roman empire.

Piedmont wine is the range of Italian wines made in the province of Piedmont in the northwestern corner of Italy. The most well known wines from the region include Barolo and Barbaresco. They are made from the Nebbiolo grape. These wines are ideal for ageing and awell-aged Barolo for instance may leave a feeling of drinking velvet because the tannins are polished and integrated more and more into the wine. As the wine matures the colour becomesmore brownish and rust-red.

Other popular grapes used for red wine production are Barbera and Dolcetto. Wine made onthe Barbera grape is often fruity and delicate with less tannin than wine made from the Nebbiolo grape. Dolcetto on the other side, is not as the name indicates sweet (dolce is Italian for sweet). The grape gives fresh and dry red wines with some tannin. The wines made on theDolcetto grape should be consumed young or lighter fares.

Barolo

Barolo wines are derived from the Nebbiolo grape and produced in Italy's Piedmont region. This is truly one of the world's best red wines and is an example of a wine that gets better and better with age. Nebbiolo is one of the first varietals to undergo budbreak and last to bepicked, with harvest generally taking place in late October. Barolo wines must be solelycomposed of Nebbiolo, no exceptions. According to DOCG regulations, the wines must be agedfor at least two years in oak and one year in bottle, with five years of age (three years in oak)required for Riserva.

Veneto is a wine region in north-eastern Italy, one of a group of three highly productive Italian regions known collectively as the Venezie (after the ancient Venetian Republic) and thebiggest DOC producer of the three. Although the Venezie collectively produce more red winethan white, the Veneto region produces more whites under DOC and is home to the famousSoave wines.

The region is protected from the harsh northern European climate by the Alps, the foothills of which form the Veneto's northern extremes. These cooler climes are well-suited to white varieties like Garganega (the main grape for Soave wines) while the warmer Adriatic coastalplains and river valleys are where the renowned Valpolicella, Amarone and Bardolino DOC reds are produced. Veneto's growers are among the most modernised in Italy. While most of the 'classic' wines from this area are based on native grape varieties like Prosecco and Verduzzo, high demand for Veneto wines in the European and North American markets has galvanized the region's producers into experimentation with Cabernets, Chardonnay and Pinot varieties, among others.

Italian Red Wine cont... Amarone della Valpolicella, usually known as Amarone, is a typically rich Italian dry redwine made from the partially dried grapes of the Corvina, Rondinella and Molinara varieties. The wine was awarded Denominazione di Origine Controllata (DOC) status in December 1990.

On 4 December 2009, Amarone and Recioto della Valpolicella were promoted to the status of Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita (DOCG).

The final result is a very ripe, raisiny, full-bodied wine with very little acid. Alcohol content easilysurpasses 15% (the legal minimum is 14%) and the resulting wine is rarely released until fiveyears after the vintage, even though this is not a legal requirement.

Amarone to begin with just the colour is amazing, a deep intense, ruby red. The aromas are justas strong and powerful, rich and fruity, along with aromas of red berries and spices. Drinking thiswine is the pinnacle of the whole experience. It is intense, rich, luscious, and fruity. It is also verysmooth and velvety while at the same time quite thick, and unbelievably complex!!

It is the Chateau d'Yquem of Italy, absent the grandeur. It is the coveted gem of the Boot, but does not bear the prestigious name Sassicaia. It is a legendary winery, without an estate. Its bottles are identified by hand scripted labels that provide a glimpse into the heart and

soul of the world’s truest artisanal winemaker.

It is Quintarelli! The late, great Maestro del Veneto, Giuseppe Quintarelli, succeeded in establishing his mythicaland legendary estate during an amazing sixty-year career creating one of the world’s mostsought-after wines. From aperitifs to digestifs, his limited production Amarones, Reciotos, andValpolicellas are the benchmark for excellence (along with Dal Forno, Veneto's other legendaryproducer). Their greatness stems from the inherent quality of the terroir and natural talent ofthis master, whose concept of vintage approval and strict grape selection rival the great Chateauof Sauternes. Giuseppe put his wines on the market when he deemed them ready, often keepingthem in the cellar for decades until the right moment arrives. Giuseppe’s daughter Fiorenza, hisson-in-law Giampaolo, and his grandsons Francesco and Lorenzo are all keeping a close watch over the family’s legacy.

It is impossible to speak about Quintarelli without superlatives. Thename itself stands for so much: the family, the wines, a style, a tradition,a way of doing things. After all the time, effort, patience, and care that go into the making of abottle of Quintarelli, it truly does mean so much more than wine. Giuseppe, fondly known as“Bepi” to those closest to him, was a perfectionist in every way. From the beautiful handwrittenlabels, to the best possible quality cork, to the exquisite wine in the bottles, the Quintarelli nameis a stamp of authenticity and the ultimate indication of an artisanal, handmade, uncompromisingwine of the highest quality.

It isn't easy to keep up with Giuseppe Quintarelli, as this legendary producer released hiswines when he felt they where ready, not a moment sooner. As is often the case, these aresome of the most mind-blowing wines being made anywhere, but sadly, prices are equally dizzying. Still, for wine lovers who can afford them, these are reference-point wines.
