History builds a premier event

Murrurundi will come alive from February 22 for the King of the Ranges Stockman’s Challenge.

The idea was hatched in 2001 when some local stockmen competed at the Snowy River Challenge at Corryong in Victoria. During those early discussions a skilled stockman from the early 1900’s named Bung McInnes was mentioned, being known as “King of the Ranges” when working round Moonan and the Barrington Tops.

So there it was, Corryong had The Man from Snowy River and has Murrurundi has the King of the Ranges. It took years of hard work and dedication from many people, but the King of the Ranges is now Australia’s premier stockman’s challenge, winning multiple awards.

White Park Arena on the riseUpper Hunter Shire Council has taken the next step in building an all-weather arena in White Park, Scone. The White Park Recreation and Equine Facility Development Stage 1, costed at $1.969 million, is being funded by $1.469 million from the Hunter Infrastructure and Investment Fund (HIIF) and $500,000 from Council.

Stage 1 includes a new arena surface and drainage; a 90 metre by 60 metre roof with a central vent and clear roof sheets over the arena; some terraced seating; water tanks, landscape irrigation, and basic lighting under the roof.

With earthworks already underway, the project should soon be out of the ground.

Safer and scenic to MoonanIf you haven’t driven to Moonan lately, or even taken the ‘back way’ to Barrington Tops, you’re in for a safer, scenic drive. Upper Hunter Shire Council has completed extensive work on the Moonan Cutting prior to Moonan Flats, 50 km north-east of Scone. The previously perilous section of Hunter Road has been moved away from the bank of the Hunter River, resurfaced and widened from 5 metres wide to 7 metres.

The line of sight along the 160 metres of road has been greatly improved by straightening the bend. The $935,000 project took two and a half years (starting in September 2015) and involved excavation of the 25m high cutting with digging equipment and explosives, protecting motorists with rock catch fences (40m long at 1.8m high, and 30m long at 3m high) and a new guard railing above the river.

There was also new catch benches, line markings and drainage structures including a drainage pipe under the road.

Images: Councillors Maurice Collison and Kiwa Fisher inspecting Moonan Cutting before and after the project.

The Mayor of Upper Hunter Shire Council, Wayne Bedggood today said:

“We are delighted to announce that after two rounds of interviews and the very competitive evaluation of some outstanding candidates, Council has appointed Stephen McDonald on a 5 year contract as Council’s General Manager. Steve has had over 32 years’ Local Government experience and is currently the General Manager at Muswellbrook Shire Council. He brings with him a wealth of regional and Local Government knowledge and he has an excellent grasp on the priorities of the communities within our

region.’’ Cr Bedggood said.

In relation to the announcement, Martin Rush, the mayor of Muswellbrook said:

“Muswellbrook Shire Council’s organisation has changed dramatically over the last ten years – particularly in terms of its fi nances. Steve has been crucial in driving that change and although we are very sad to see him go we know that he will bring increased capacity for resource sharing between our two councils. We wouldn’t have wanted to lose him to anyone else. The relationship Muswellbrook Shire Council has with Upper Hunter Shire Council is strong and

this will cement that relationship even further.”

In accepting the Council offer Mr McDonald said: “I’m excited about joining the organisation and being further involved in the Upper Hunter community. I look forward to building on the past successes enjoyed by the close working relationship between Upper Hunter and Muswellbrook Shire Councils.”

Mr McDonald will take up the role of Upper Hunter Shire Council General Manager on the 19 March 2018 replacing Waid Crockett, who resigned in December 2017.

Seeking to invest in Upper Hunter’s futureIn order to fund major community projects, town revitalisations and road upgrades, Upper Hunter Shire Council has voted to apply for a Special Rate Variation (SRV) for a three year period commencing from the 2018/2019 year. The application will propose a permanent increase to general rate income at an SRV rate of 6.3 per cent, inclusive of the rate peg, in 2018/19, 2019/20 and 2020/21. If the application is successful, Council will apply for a loan facility of $15 million which will be repaid over 15 years from the additional revenue from the SRV. There would be further community engagement to fi nalise the priority projects to be funded from the SRV. The current potential projects list can be viewed on UHSC’s website.

Ordinary men, singing songs“It takes a rare skill to be very silly, thoughtful, and sing in perfect harmony, but the Spooky Men’s Chorale manage to achieve just that” – The Guardian UK

As thunderous as a herd of wildebeest, as sly as a wagonload of Spike Milligans, and as sonorous as a cloister of monks, the Spooky Men’s Chorale is a gift that keeps on giving. From 17 to 25 February 2018, the improbably bearded vocalists tour regional New South Wales for Musica Viva, taking their unforgettable concerts and workshops on an 1,100-kilometre road trip through Goulburn, Muswellbrook, Coffs Harbour and Taree. Based on the twin pillars of grand foolishness and the quest for the perfect subwoofer-rattling boofchord, they commentate the absurdity and grandeur of the modern male, armed only with their voices, a sly collection of hats and a twinkle in the eye. They draw on a

combination of Georgian table songs, pindrop beautiful ballads, highly inappropriate covers, and immaculate man anthems like “Don’t stand between a man and his tool”, all of which amount to a manifesto for the new breed of man: happily suspended between thug and wimp.

Formed in the Blue Mountains in 2001 by Christchurch-born spookmeister Stephen Taberner, the Spooky Men have appeared on Spicks and Specks, The Mix and The New Inventors, performed live on ABC radio many times and have earned great international acclaim on six UK tours and at major festivals including Edinburgh Fringe, Cambridge and Tonder (Denmark).

With six albums under their belt, they’re more masters of their territory than ever before.

Hear the Spooky Men’s Chorale live at the Upper Hunter Conservatorium in Muswellbrook in the Atherstone Room on 23 February at 7.30pm. For further information on ticket sales and bus service from Scone and Aberdeen to the concert, contact the UHCM on 6541 4888.
