Family Medicine Interest Group (FMIG-UHSC)
Preface
FMIG in the US, in affiliation with AAFP, is created to enhance student’s interests in
Family Medicine by providing resources, programming that may not be offered in the medical
school curriculum. Through this group, students can cultivate their interests, shape leadership
potentials, get involved in community services and mentoring activities, and focus on their future
career as family physicians.
FMIG for us is initially just a dream. Upon arrival of Prof. Stephen F. Cummings and Dr.
Laura Goldman, family physicians and lecturers from Boston University, our dream is no longer a
dream; it was definitely realized. Starting from little information, we keep moving forward to
acquire and find sources to gain more understandings about family medicine. From not just to
know but also deeply understand, we can feel how beneficial family medicine and family
medicine interest group are for improving the quality of health care system in Cambodia.
Through counseling and encouraging from them, we decide to work as a small group within
colleagues whose one and only common is to let this new specialty exist in our country.
FMIG-UHSC paper book is designed as an introduction and a smart guideline of certain
activities of the club involving self-designed curriculum of clinical knowledge and clinical skills
in primary cares, which is useful for students in term of serving in families and community,
particularly multicultural and underprivileged populated communities. The presence of this
paper book is toughly inspired by the spirit of teamwork of the first batch of medical students
from International Programme at University of Health Sciences, Cambodia.
It comes to be the first ever publication of our hard-working and innovative programs by
selecting critically from up-to-date and reliable sources related to family physicians and primary
care professionals in purpose of adapting to the situation in our country. FMIG-UHSC is
conceived as a study-aid club which is solely created by students, and for students. In keeping with
this concept, we have recruited the outstanding seniors and students as contributors to ensure the
high-quality standard and facility approaches.
We are honored to be part of this long journey with the club, and we are ready to change
the old mindset in medical cares by strengthening the relationship between doctors and doctors,
doctors and patients as well as working as a team to be an excellent tool in providing an effective
primary care in Cambodia. Eventually, we positively believe that in future the quality of
healthcare services and living standard of our people will be much more improved.

International Programme (IP) is another new initiative proposed by the Faculty of Medicine (FoM) as a
result of the collaboration of the University of Health Sciences (UHSC) and the French Embassy in
Cambodia.
Thanks to support and advices from the regional universities, the International Programme has been
initiated by the rector, Pr. Saphonn Vathanak, in collaboration with an executive direction of Pr. Mam
Bun Socheat, Pr. Nhem Aklinn, Pr. Im Bunthoeun, Dr. Mam Vantharith, Dr. Sim Kong, Dr. Thomas
Fassier, and Pr. Pascal Millet.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, France in conjunction with the UHSC, has provided supports for the
International Programme. This programme is also sustained by students who are interested in challenges
and complementary training adding to their curriculum.
The main objective of this programme is to prepare proactive and assertive students for international
mobility during their post-graduate studies, by applying to fellowship programs, complementary training
and/or diplomas abroad.
In addition to the school curriculum, four main activities are registered:
1. Academic Training
Seminars
Conferences of Clinical Cases
Simulated-Practice Training
2. Foreign Language Training
Intensive preparation to DELF & IELTS (Certified)
Basic, medical and scientific training of French and English
3. Basic Research Training
Literature Search & Critical Appraisal

To start something new and creative, a well-implemented foundation and a sustainable development is
required. Each process of us is a stepping stone to a giant leap. Every success is begun with a start, a start
that no one else has ever imagined before!
How does this happen to us? What inspires us to establish a FMIG?

The Family Medicine Interest Group (FMIG-UHSC) provides a marvelous opportunity for
all medical students that are concerned with Family Medicine, especially the
International Program’s students, to sharp their leadership, and interpersonal skills in
future career. The ownership of oneself is highly prioritized by any means of contribution
to the team.
The FMIG-UHSC has a huge range of available positions, which composes of fourteen
core members, and a number of members, allocated in a variety of department due to
their assertiveness and talents.
The EB consists of 14 positions: a president, two vice-presidents, a treasurer, a secretary,
two co-secretaries, and seven other directing chairs. In Programming Department, there
are a Lecture Chair, a Clinical Skills Chair, a Community Services Chair, and a Social
Activities Chair, whilst in Admin Department; there are a Membership Recruitment
Coordinator, Public Affairs Coordinator, and Publicity Coordinator.
For the first ever mandate, all EB was elected from the International Program’s students
who are having a very strong willingness to make things happen in favor of Family
Medicine. Despite some inconveniences and time constraints, it takes more than two
weeks to complete all the election tasks.

PROGRAMMING
FMIG UHSC programming falls into four different categories:
Lectures & Discussions
Clinical Skills
Workshop
Community Services
Social Activities
A series of workshop or seminar will be
conducted to give students an opportunity to
learn and practice procedural skills. Some
volunteered senior students, residents and
physician will be recruited to help with the
demonstration, and simulation session.
Community service is one of the biggest
initiatives and collaborative activity with other
organizations on our campus or outside the
campus. As recommended, four things to keep in
mind once planning community service projects:
identify a charity or recipient, define goals,
inform the larger community, and promote
service learning.
Peer learning and discussions are highly
recommended. Also, some local inspiring residents
and senior students from diverse backgrounds are
invited to discuss different topics related to primary
cares, and certain local physician are welcomed to
talk about and share experiences.
The socio-cultural aspect of our FMIG allows the
members to make friendships who have similar
or the same interests and intentions. Peer-to-
peer events include fundraising charity, concert,
retreats, holiday, and reunion forum.
“Coming together is a beginning.
Keeping together is progress.
Working together is success.”
- Henry Ford 07

“A pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity. An optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty.”
– Sir Winston Churchill
So far, we have been working on planning and administration. It is really difficult for us since we, as medical students, do not have sufficient time to work for the club. However, our perspectives of FMIG are still appreciated at
the highest point and the top priority as well as academic courses.
Although our student government has tried our best, but we still need supports from others. Now, what we concern so is all about “funding”.
To begin with, funding is really necessary and responsible for the survival and sustainable development of the FMIG since we all the students work
voluntarily. We have got in minds that there are two major sources of funds, which the first one comes from the faculty and another one from outside, probably the FMIG abroad or sponsors.
Despite a good opportunity to develop ourselves in FMIG, and it is also a
time to cultivate our knowledge in real society. Still, we need some other supports including “physical supports” or “material supports” and “technical supports”. And, what we need the most now is the Faculty Advisor(s); a
person who we can reach out for helps both mentally and physically aids.
We strongly hope that the faculty and other FMIGs help us to make this happen in Cambodia. We love to see everyone’s satisfaction with the
outcomes of this club.
