The 1970s and early 1980s were unique in music history, a time when high concept albums by super groups like Rush, Jour-ney, Pink Floyd, and Boston dominated the rock airwaves.

From its humble origins in

a suburban Chicago basement in the early 1970s, Styx would soon rise to become one of the most famous of those super groups. For over a decade, you couldn’t turn on a radio without hearing a Styx hit, whether a

synthesizer-driven hard rock an-them or a soaring power ballad.

The group had their first smash with “Lady,” off their 1973 sec-ond album, Styx II. Fourteen stu-dio albums followed, including The Grand Illusion, with hits “Come Sail Away” and “Fool-ing Yourself;” Pieces of Eight, with singles “Blue Collar Man” and “Renegade;” and Paradise Theater, with singles “Best of Times” and “Too Much Time on My Hands.”

In the pantheon of Nashville songwriters, Lee Brice is a standout, the kind of craftsman that country music superstars like Garth Brooks seek out to produce com-pelling hits. In fact, Brooks had one of his biggest with Brice’s 2007 “More Than a Memory,” which became the first only song to date to debut at No. 1 in the entire history of the country music charts.

But Brice, who has been writing songs since he was 10 years old, has also enjoyed solo success as a singer/songwriter. His 2009 debut album, Love Like Crazy, was a critical and popular success, whose single of the same name spent 56 weeks in the Billboard Hot Coun-try Songs chart, peaking at No. 3. At the time, it set the record for the longest run of such a single in the chart’s history.

Two other albums followed: Hard 2 Love (2012), with its No. 1 singles “A Woman Like You,” “Hard 2 Love,” and “I Drive Your Truck; and his 2014 third album, I Don’t Dance. The latter’s title single earned him Song of the Year at the 2014 Grammy Awards, and his live performance “stole the show,” according to USA Today.

There’s something about the start of a new year that makes us want to wipe the slate clean and have a fresh outlook on life. We set goals and resolve to break bad habits and replace them with good ones.

For our purposes, put those thoughts about buying a treadmill or bringing a salad to work for lunch aside and con-centrate on how to become a better slot player.

1. Resolve to stop being a passive player. It’s easy to walk into a casino, sit down in front of the first open ma-chine you see, and start feeding it cur-rency. But even though slot play is based 99 percent on luck, there’s still a tiny fraction of cerebral input that you can employ to try to gain an advantage.

One such way is to make it a point to walk around and observe people play-ing the machines. If you frequent a par-ticular casino, you’ll in all likelihood be able to pick up on trends. You may notice a particular machine that seems to hit all the time. It may just be coin-cidence or it may be that the machine’s internal computer is programmed at a higher “hit” frequency or a higher per-centage payback.

2. Resolve to take advantage of ticket-in/ticket-out technology. The cashless system is designed as a con-venience for the casino operators, but there are features from which players will also benefit.

The cashless system makes it pos-sible for slot players to collect tickets with modest wins and hopefully have them add up to a nice little score when it’s time to go home. For example, if you buy into a machine for $20 and in a short period of time you see your mon-ey double or even triple, the voucher system makes it easy to capitalize on your good fortune and move on to an-other machine.

3. Resolve to not be greedy. It’s an easy thing to say, but so hard to do. If you

want to be a successful player, however, you must get used to it. Chasing jack-pots or not being satisfied with modest gains have been the ruin of many a slot player. It’s nice to win. When you do, you owe it to yourself to be content. It’s okay to play with a portion of your win-nings, but by all means make it a point to preserve some of your good fortune and walk out the door with it.

4. Resolve to play at a leisurely pace. Quite frankly, this is the strongest weapon you possess. The speed with which you play has no effect on your chances of winning. Stretch your bank-roll and make your casino outing last as long as possible.

5. Resolve to have more fun. People will always go to casinos primarily to gamble, but opportunities to enjoy a fine dining experience, take in a show, or enjoy musical entertainment are be-coming more important as well.

Food and beverage service in par-ticular seem to be a be a differentiator. America’s love affair with cooking, fu-eled by the popularity of cable TV net-work shows devoted to the culinary arts, has made pop culture icons out of chefs who view Las Vegas and other gam-bling jurisdictions as bold new frontiers for exposure. Not only have a number of celebrity chefs, including Wolfgang Puck, Bobby Flay, and Emeril Lagasse, opened signature restaurants in gaming destinations, chefs of lesser renown are likewise making names for themselves because of their connection to the casi-no-dining scene.

The desire on behalf of casino prop-erties to create the most pleasant expe-rience for their guests extends beyond upscale restaurants. It also reaches to 24-hour snack shops and coffee venues, as well as cocktail service.

6. Resolve to expand your gaming horizons. If you primarily gravitate to-ward the slots, give the table games a chance. The dealers at roulette, black-jack, and craps are more than eager to assist you in getting to know the games, especially during a time when it isn’t crowded. You may find a new favorite game!

As we’ve been reporting since last summer, Atlantic City has experienced an alarmingly sharp decline in atten-dance, prompting the closure of four major casinos in 2014.

But now for some good news: Ac-cording to the December 18, 2014 issue of USA Today, billionaire investor Carl Icahn has come to the rescue of the Taj Mahal Casino with a $20 million pledge to rescue the embattled property from imminent closure.

The casino, a property of Trump En-tertainment Resorts, is currently under-going bankruptcy proceedings, but the cash injection will allow it to operate until a settlement has been reached. Although he refused to support a lo-cal casino union’s appeal to the bank-ruptcy court to reinstall health and pen-sion benefits, Ichan has expressed his reluctance to otherwise let the chips fall where they may, stating in a letter to Trump Entertainment CEO Robert Griffin that he could not be so callous

as to let 3,000 hardworking people lose their jobs.

Still, current estimates reveal that the Taj has been bleeding money to

the tune of $10 million a month. One hopes that Trump Entertainment has a few cards up their sleeves to stop the outflow.

ing Hold-’em in the poker room, but noth-ing stronger than a coke playing Hold-’em as a table game on the casino floor?

Well, playing live poker—player against player—falls under Class 2 gam-ing, which allows for

adult beverages to be consumed while play-ing because Class 2 games are not consid-ered “hardcore” gam-bling ventures. On the other hand, Hold-’em as a casino-floor game pits the player against the dealer (the casino), and is therefore consid-ered a different animal than the live-action game. It falls under Class 3 gaming restric-tions.

In other words, Class 2 games, like bingo and horse and dog rac-

ing, allow liquor to be served while playing. Class 3 games like slots, Keno, and all other table games? Not a chance.

Here’s another wrin-kle: Casinos can place Class 2 “slot machines” in their cocktail loung-es, no sweat. Maybe that’s because Class 2 slots replicate pull tabs, which are also Class 2—and therefore not considered hardcore gambling devices.

With the exception of horseracing, all Class 2 games are exempt from taxation. (Horseracing operations pay 46 per-cent of their profits in taxes—20 percent to the horsemen’s asso-ciation with which they are affiliated and 26 per-cent to the state.) Class 3 games on the other hand are all taxable. The one Class 3 game that boggles is Bacca-rat, or Mini-Baccarat, both of which are avail-able at a few casinos in our state. You’d think this game, which basi-cally requires no hard-core strategy, should be Class 2. Just sit, sip, and pretend you’re James Bond. And the champagne should flow accordingly. But, no. It remains solidly Class 3 for some reason.

One of my readers recently asked if I have developed a system to beat the continuous shuffle machines. My first inclination was to respond asking why they would even want to play these games. But then I realized: Hey, to each their own. We all have our preferences.

Me? I know that in order to increase my chances to win big, I need to play games with a maximum predictability factor. Which is why blackjack is my game—it’s one of the most predict-able, and therefore winnable, games in the house. No wonder, then, that some casinos have introduced continuous shuffle machines—they destroy much of the game’s predictability.

Sure, there is still a certain amount of

intra-round predictability. For example, in a six-deck game there could never be more than 24 aces dealt per round, and those aces should be fairly well spread out among the decks.

Not so with continuous shuffle games. The nature of the constant shuffling can rearrange things so that strange clumps of cards not often found in hand-shuffled games start to appear. That makes for greater swings of imbalances, which in turn transform blackjack from a game of skill into a game of chance.

I don’t even like the normal shuffle machine tables because I lose the ad-vantage of following the cards through a shuffle, which is so easy to do with

the methods I created for dealer-shuffled games. Why would I sacrifice an edge to the house? But continuous shuffle machine tables are even worse because you lose the round-to-round (inter-round) pre-dictability.

If you play without caring whether you win or lose, then fine. But if you’re like me, looking to make some money, and the more the better, then you become more discrimi-nating about the games you play.

While we’re on the subject of player disadvantage, let me mention that I don’t even like playing the multi-deck games anymore because they, too, are far less predictable than the single- and double-pitch games. It’s easy to forget that blackjack was invented centuries ago as a single deck game. And it re-mained a single-deck game until the 1960s, when casinos began to realize they could limit player gains by adding more decks.

And remember when digital black-jack games were introduced in the late 1990s? They were like video games:

you sat down at the table and every player had a screen where a virtual dealer “dealt” them the cards.

Only problem was, players quickly sur-mised that these were no better than slot ma-chines. Serious black-jack players stayed away in droves. Few sat down at the digital tables and even fewer

came back to play them again. It was pretty clear there was no predictabil-ity to the games—they were simulated by a computer’s random number gen-erator—and they were programmed to beat the players in the long run.

Of course, the casinos can offer what they want—it’s their prerogative. I have my prerogative, too—I can be choosy about the games I play. And my years of experience tell me that contin-uous shuffle machines, multiple-deck games, and digital blackjack all put players at a great disadvantage.

Hopefully those games will go the way of Digital 21. You won’t find me at those tables. But, hey, to each their own.

Dear Mark: When it comes to video poker games, which do you prefer, Jacks-or-Bet-ter, or one of the many Bonus games that are offered? I am figuring it is Jacks-or-Better as you use it as an example more often than not. John P.

There are multiple reasons why I use the same ol’ Jacks-or-Better machines as an ex-ample in this column. Not only are they still pretty darn popular, they are less volatile than bonus machines, have a respectable payback percent-age, and their strategies are

straightforward and more in-tuitive than bonus games.

Regarding the payback re-turn: here you have to give up a little. The highest paying Jacks-or-Better pay table is a 9/6 (nine for a full house, six for a flush) machine, which, with basic strategy, returns 99.5 percent. Compared to a positive expectation game like 10/7 Double Bonus Pok-er, you are looking at a return of slightly more than 100 per-cent over the long haul—that is if each hand is played cor-rectly.

When it comes to volatility,

a Jacks-or-Better machine is not as volatile as Bonus Pok-er, Double Bonus Poker, or Triple Bonus, as adding each additional bonus adds to each machine’s unpredictability. The more volatile a game is, the more your bankroll will fluctuate, which makes you feed the machine more just to keep you in action.

Because the payouts on any Bonus game are reduced on hands like two pairs, three-of-a-kind, etc., but increased on hands like quads, I am not one to endure the swings or keep feeding a machine to chase premium hands.

While many video poker experts believe that a such-n-such machine is the cat’s meow, I like to think that there is a place for many dif-ferent video poker opportuni-ties. The crux of the choice of any machine comes down to selecting a decent pay ta-ble, utilizing expert play that you can easily learn, and what volatility you are will-ing to tolerate. The games you want to play are the ones that help you achieve your goals.
