Note from the President

With the touring season about

over for 2010, I would like to thank all

who planned and pulled off a group of

very exciting tours.

Many of our members attended

Regional, National and World Model

“A” Meets during the past year. This en-

thusiasm in our club has made us one of

the best in the country.

Don‟t forget the Charity Auction

at our November meeting. Bring items

to the auction and money to buy. Ed

Giesen will be bringing his truck for us

to fill with canned goods and non-

perishable food which will be donated to

the Kansas Food Bank.

Three people have volunteered to

select three charities for the auction pro-

ceeds to go to. Dawna Ruggles, Lenette

Kottas and Brenda Broadhead have se-

lected Operation Holiday, Share the Sea-

son, and the Wichita Childrens Home.

Your money or check will go to the char-

ity of your choice. This will make the

process much easier for our treasurer.

We will not have a meeting in

December but there will be the Ladies

Christmas Luncheon, Club Christmas

Party and New Years Day Excursion so

don‟t put old Betsy away for the winter

just yet.

Swap Meet will be here soon so

look at your schedules and allow time to

sign up and help.

Jim Broadhead, President

WACC report was given this month.

Old Business: Jim Clark re-

ported on All Ford's Day at Camp Hia-

swap meets marked with "TBA" I haven‟t

located the dates for 2011 yet. In the event

you are aware of the dates, please let me

know.

Help Bob !!!

Who is the nice gentleman who

provided a Bendix for Bob Beaver's car on

the Joplin Tour? He would like to give a

Bendix back to you but doesn't remember

who you are. If you are a very nice gentle-

man and gave Bob your Bendix, please call

him at …………..

The family of Allan Pendleton would like to express our sincere

thanks and appreciation to everyone in the Model „A‟ Club who reached

out to Dad during his last days. His wish was to die at home just like

Mom did, and because of your willingness to share your time he was able

to do just that.

We cannot say "Thank You!" enough for the visits, the cards and

the wonderful meals that were provided. Thanks are also in order to the

club members who drove their Model A's to both funerals. It was nice to

see the cars and the people that had meant so much to our parents through-

out their lives be there one last time to send them "on the road again" to

their final resting place. We picture them happily together again, and most

importantly, healthy together again! We have truly been blessed that our

parents had such a special group of friends who helped take such great

care of BOTH of them during their final days. We could not have done it

without you!

The Wichita A's are an awesome group of people! We will never

forget what you did for the Pendleton family!

Sincerely,

Allan Pendleton, Jr. and Family

What is the Charity Auction All About?

For many years the Wichita A‟s have held a Charity Auction for

the program during the November club meeting. For old timers this is an

event we look forward to in order to help our local charities. For new

comers this is what is entailed. An auction is held following the Novem-

ber club meeting. Admission to this auction is a donation of food (canned

or dry goods), which is collected and donated to the Kansas Food Bank.

We bring items we want to sell and we bid on and pay for items we win.

Everyone brings item(s) like Model „A‟ parts, household items, food or

craft items to sell to the highest bidder. Remember, junk does not bring in

much money and good items bring in a lot of money.

The proceeds from the auction will be donated to three charities

which have already been selected for this year. The three charities are Op-

eration Holiday, Share the Season, and Wichita Childrens Home.

When the auction is over, to whom and how do I pay? You keep

track of your personal winnings and total up the amount you owe. You

can pay cash or write a check to the charity of your choice. There will be

someone, in the back of the room, who will collect and give the money to

the designated charity.

This auction is a fun and entertaining social event that also bene-

fits our local charities. McCurdy Auction has graciously volunteered

again this year to do the auction.

If you have any questions, please contact one of the officers of the

club.

Two years ago when Gary and Pamela Kirk

were in Texas they noticed a swap meet in Belton, Texas

and stopped to look around. They bought a golf cart that

they thought they could use at home. While Gary was

loading it in the back of the pickup Pam was looking

around some more and came to ask Gary if he had seen

the Model A Sedan Delivery for sale. He had looked at it

and moved on but since Pam thought it was really neat he

went back to take another look. They thought the price

was too high so they came home without it,

In the next few days Gary called the owner in

Hillsboro, Texas and made an offer on the Sedan Delivery

which was declined. A day or two later the owner called

and accepted Gary’s offer so they hooked up the trailer

and went back after it.

They have since added the Kirk’s Meadow vinyl

inscription and art work on the sides which Gary pur-

chased from a vendor at the Iola, Wisconsin swap meet.

When the Kirks built their home on 7 acres north

of Maize, the Metro Planning Commission rezoned the

area, from farm ground to residential and named it Kirk’s

Meadow. The Kirks were very happy with the name and

thought they should inscribe the name on their sedan de-

livery. RG

Charles E. Davidson took a job at the Coleman Com-

pany of Wichita in 1918 in the engineering department. He

continued to work there for 40 years until 1958. The family

still has his 40 year service pin.

Sometime around WW11, Mr. Davidson purchased a

30 Model A Ford Coupe for a work car. The previous owner

is unknown but some of the family lore indicated that it was

a service car for a filling station on North Broadway. In

those days before jumper cables it might be more accurate to

refer to it as a “push car” as the front bumper had vertical

bars attached, that looked like spring leaves. This would have

allowed them to give a push to about any vehicle.

Mr. Davidson died in 1959 and his children inherit-

ed the Model A. For the next 32 years, his son, Victor kept

the car but never bothered to title it. In 1991 he died and two

of his sons wound up with it. They had quite a time getting

the title cleared and in their names.

Charley, our current club member, and grandson of

Charles E. took the car “under his wing” and started to work

on it. Over a period of years He restored the chassis and

maintained the hydraulic brakes, tube shocks and 16” wheels.

He knew he wanted a driver so he kept the modifications that

had been added over 40 years previous.

This car had really “been through the mill”. It was

painted medium green all over. Charley wonders if it was

Coleman green? When he stripped the paint from the panel

above the rear window he discovered some lettering that

looked like “Free Pickup and Delivery” which seems to veri-

fy the filling station, push car theory.

The car had a steel top that was welded on. The un-

derside of the visor was welded to the header panel. The rear

fenders had been replaced with the narrow sedan fenders, cut

down the middle from front to back and a 2”-3” strip welded

in to make them wide enough. This required new fenders.

The firewall was really butchered to accommodate numerous

modifications and had to be replaced. The entire sub-frame

for the body had to be replaced.

After 10-12 years Charley sent the car to a body

shop in the western part of the county. He had high hopes

for nice body work and paint but after 2 ½ years he picked it

up without it being finished.

Charlie and Marcelyn Davidson

Davidsons' Hand Me Down

In his search for a reputable restoration shop he

commissioned, Ron Kester of Ron’s Restorations in

Glade, Ks to complete the job. Ron took the car in Sept. 09

and finished it in July, 2010. His shop totally disassembled

the body, started over, and did it right.

Charley and his wife Marcelyn are very satisfied

and proud of the car and hope to participate in some club

activities. RG

Future Activities & Tours

Fall Fliog Tovr to Joplio

Thirty Model A‟s and two modern cars left on

October 15th for Joplin, MO on a three day tour. The

first day was a travel day. After arriving in Joplin we

were given a tour of the PMI Paint Factory. They

showed us how “Powder Coat Paint” was made.

We were given an extensive, behind the

scenes, tour on how candy is made at the Chocolate

Factory. While one half of the group was taking the

tour the other half was purchasing candy. If you are a

relative to any of the shoppers you now have an idea

as to what you might expect for a Christmas gift.

Next we toured the Tri-State Mineral Muse-

um. Kerry & Wanda Steffens left early for the Rain-

bow Bridge, near Riverton, KS so they could get set up

and take photographs of our individual cars driving

over the bridge. Thank you Kerry & Wanda!

We ate lunch at “Café on the Route” in Baxter

Springs, KS. Richard & Amy Sanell are the owners.

The chef, Richard Sanell, was featured on Diners,

Drive-In and Dives on Food Network TV a couple of

years ago. He did an outstanding job with our meal.

On the way back to Joplin, the leader (me….)

missed the turn to the Tri-State Marker, (the point

where the states of Oklahoma, Missouri and Kansas

meet), and continued on to Joplin. I corrected the

mistake the next morning and we stopped at the Tri-

State Marker on our way home. We found two mark-

ers, one old and one new. The new one was located 50

feet east of the old one. Following a more recent sur-

vey, Kansas gained ground with the placement of the

new marker.

We took the southern route home through,

Niotaze, Sedan, Cedar Vale and Dexter. At Dexter

two of the groups decided on the adventure of taking

the shortcut to Winfield. There was plenty of road kill

on this road to make possum stew but mostly aged a

bit too much. We ate at the restaurant in downtown

Winfield and parked on Main Street. Thirty Model

A‟s on Main was quite a spectacle for the local resi-

dents.

Bob Beaver had to replace his broken Bendix

at the motel the first night. Bob Bruce started to have

a major engine problem in north Joplin and drove the

phaeton to the motel. It went home on a trailer being

pulled by Frank Chenoweth‟s modern truck.

The weather was surprisingly beautiful for the

middle of October. The trees were just beginning to

change colors.

Wichita A's Meos Tovr

We left town on Saturday, October 30th for a fun filled weekend. We toured How-

ard Alger‟s large private car collection near Chanute, KS. After lunch at the Grain

Bin restaurant in Chanute, visited Mark Freimiller‟s Model T Haven in Iola, KS.

The next morning we drove to Florence, KS, had lunch and then visited Joe

Hayes‟ Salvage yard. Joe was featured recently in Old Cars Weekly magazine.

There were 38 men and 22 Model A's on the tour. Several of the guys got

good deals on Model „A‟ parts at Model „T‟ Haven, but no one was able to make a

deal on parts at Florence.

We drove about 330 miles, and experienced no car problems.

Era Fashion

Copied from McCall's Magazine, January 1930

5899 5937 5966

L΄ Echo de Paris

No. 5899. Contrasting materials accent a smart yoke, ex-

tended to form drop shoulders and cut in points front and

back.

No. 5937. Tailored lines are practically interpreted in a

school frock with a round yoke extended in a tab down the

front.

No. 5966. A one-sided effect is lent to an attractive frock

by a band cut in one with the skirt, extending around the

neck.

Tech Talk Technical Tip

As a long time Model A owner there are always two items that I keep close

at hand for quick access when needed. The two items are a 5/8” combination

wrench, handle wrapped with PVC tape and a 4” length of ¾” hose.

When it is necessary to disconnect the battery cable from the starter switch,

the insulated wrench is to insure you will not short out the battery to the stem on the

adjacent starter switch. Unless you have an insulated wrench it is very easy

(probably inevitable) that you will touch the stem and throw sparks.

When the nut is off the switch very carefully lift the battery cable off the stud

and slip the hose over it to insulate it from ground. This can also be a spark thrower

if you touch the cable end to ground. Once the hose is slipped over the cable end

then you can safely remove the starter or make other repairs.

The hose can be, heater or garden type, but make sure it is large enough to

slip over the battery cable end.

Those with 12 volt conversions may already have a disconnect switch so

they can disconnect the power at the battery, and the importance of the tools is nil.

In addition to the shop tool box I try to keep a set in both Model A‟s. RG
