"Where did you get that hat? Where did you get that tile? Isn't it a nobby one, and just the proper style? I should like to have one Just the same as that!" Where'er I go, they shout "Hello! Where did you get that hat?"

Joseph J. Sullivan, 1888

I am not a hat person. They squash my hair, especially my bangs, and make me feel self-conscious. I suppose I should have thought of that before purchasing a Roadster. Half the fun is riding with the top down; even with the top up, there’s a gap between the roof and the windshield that al-lows the wind to whip through the car. I know this could be remedied by installation of the windshield snaps but that’s a ways down on the list of priori-ties.

Hatless, I arrive at my destination looking as if I’ve survived a tornado. Even 25-35 mph around town is devastating to unrestrained, chin-length hair. It’s also hard to see the road with hair in my eyes.

I was fortunate to find a summer straw cloche at TJ Maxx a couple of years ago and a couple of wool felt cloche hats at Target. If I go over 45 mph, I have to tie the hats on (with the help of elastic pinned to the inside hat band).

At stop lights I get comments from folks in other cars such as “Great car ; love the hat” but there are a couple of folks who work in my build-ing who have said “I saw you out driving… lose the hat!” I can only imagine that they’re used to seeing my lovely face and mag-nificent hair and don’t like to see either of them hid-den, or perhaps they just find the hats to be ugly. Who knows?

Anyhow, if I want to drive (or ride in) the Roadster, I either need to put up with the hats or get a crew cut. My consolation is that the hats I’ve found (I bought a new summer hat at Target to-day) are not nearly as ugly as some I’ve seen from the late 20’s!

NEWS FROM UNDER THE SHADE TREE Marvin Vanover is recuperating from surgery. Pascal continues to improve and appreciates

your prayers, cards, and visits. The Gordon family is mourning the death of

Christine for whom a funeral was held on March 24. They appreciate your thoughts and prayers during this time. If you have items of interest to the club, such

as illnesses or celebrations, please send them to me at [email protected] for inclu-sion in “News from Under the Shade Tree”.

FROM THE APRIL ASSEMBLY LINE

YOUR CLUB OFFICERS Doug Wilson commented at the last Board

meeting that he had no idea how much time and work the Board put in to make the club function. Let the Board know how much you appreciate them with both a “thank you” and with your par-ticipation in meetings and activities.

Now that spring has arrived, or should I say summer, it is that time of year where working on or driving your model A is near perfect. I hope that you’re able to get out whether participating in a club event or just on a Sunday drive to enjoy your prized possession.

If you missed last month’s meeting, Stewart Smith did an excellent job presenting everything you needed to know (and more) about our hearts, our body’s main arteries, and what can happen when we don’t take care of ourselves. However, as Stewart explained, even if we don’t eat the right things and get some exercise, modern medicine and the experts in the field of cardiology can help save lives in spite of our poor judgment and physi-cal abuse. The graphic pictures and video really brought home Stewart’s message and I hope that those in attendance took that message seriously. Also, thanks to Tom Roberts for scheduling this fascinating talk. Although, not directly related to the Model A Ford, it is most applicable to the owners and operators of these cars. If we don’t have healthy drivers and mechanics, we won’t see these cars at shows or traveling down the road.

At the March meeting, the club approved spending $150.00 to purchase a “brick” towards the construction of the Model A Ford Foundation Museum. The brick will be engraved to state the following, “Shade Tree A’s, Augusta, GA., Found-ed January 1973”.

Hope to see you all at the meeting in April af-ter most of the Masters crowd has left the area and life can return back to normal.

STA LIBRARY Is there a Model A book that you’d like to see

added to the STA Library? Did you even know we have a library? Alan Stewart has been busy catalog-ing the long-neglected collection of books and magazines. If you have any of the club’s books, please bring them to the next meeting so they will make it into the updated list. If you have sugges-tions for additions to the collection, contact Alan.

MODEL "A" MUSEUM

The Board of Directors voted unanimously to show our support for the proposed MAFFI (Model A Ford Foundation, Inc.) Museum at the Gilmore Car Museum in Hickory Corners, Michi-gan by donating a paving brick. The $150 brick will be engraved with “Shade Tree A’s, Augusta, Geor-gia , Founded 1973”. Because the cost to purchase and engrave the brick is only about $25, there re-mains $125 toward the museum expenses and at the same time leaves our permanent mark on the museum. If you would like your own brick or to purchase an in-honor-of or in-memory-of brick for someone else, visit the website at http://www.maffi.org.

LETTER FROM THE GORDONS March 23, 2012

To: Our Model A Family.

First off we want to thank you all for caring,.

The support you all have shown is beyond amaz-ing, and the love that makes us feel like part of your families is a wonderful feeling. The day we lost our Oma (Christine Lindner) was a hard day for the Gordon and Lindner families. But to our surprise we were reminded that we have a bigger family (The Model A Club) that cares just as much as we do. The food that was brought over to the house was greatly appreciated and needed. When you lose someone special our minds get into mourning the loss and we forget to keep up with our normal routines. It was great that you guys re-minded us to eat!

We know we are in your prayers and that is more then we can ask from any of you. Just know that it is greatly appreciated. Our Pappy (George Gordon) mentioned that if anyone asks or wanted to make donations in honor of Christine (Our Oma) that they are welcome to, he would love for all donations to go to the St Joseph Church on Lumpkin Rd. He said something about a new building they are working on and he would love to see it shine.

It’s going to be a hard few days for us, but we appreciate everything the Model A family has done for our Pappy and families. You are all a true bless-ing to our family.

God bless and we thank you all again.

With love,

The Gordon Family

HOP ON THE RUNNING BOARD!

Anne Neely-Beck

The Model A Youth Scholarship Fund is solicit-ing money so we can sponsor more scholarships for your children and grandchildren. We have many clubs and chapters that have signed up to donate monies each year and we also have many clubs and chapters that have fund raisers just for the Model A Youth Scholarship Fund. Some ideas for fund rais-ers could be a yard sale, jumble sale, a chili supper (invite the public), a cooking contest, a raffle on a certain item, an auction; the list goes on and on. Al-so a donation in honor or in memory of a club member is the perfect way to say thank you or your memory lives on.

Model A Youth Scholarship Fund Facts: The Model A Youth Scholarship Fund is non-profit and has a 501(c)(3) status, so your donation is tax de-ductible.

The Fund administrators donate their time and receive no compensation for their time and effort; all monies raised go back into the Fund for the youth.

Eligibility is granted to children and grandchil-dren of any MARC/MAFCA member in pursuing their undergraduate education whether it is at a uni-versity, college or technical school.

The scholarships are awarded for up to four years.

All scholarship winners receive $1000 every year for up to four years upon submission of satisfactory grade requirements.

I challenge your club or chapter to donate some money to the Fund so we can give scholarships to all applicants.

Remember the Model A Youth Scholarship Fund is a way for our children and grandchildren to preserve the Model A heritage for future genera-tions.

MODEL A MUSEUM

UPDATE At some point in April the construction of the

new Model A Museum will begin. Depending on final contract negotiations and the weather in cen-tral Michigan, the bulldozers will begin preparing for the foundation of the new 11,000-square-foot building. A formal Ground Breaking ceremony is planned for April 17 with members of MAFFI, MARC and MAFCA participating in the joint ef-fort to build a home for “Henry’s Lady”.

Predictions are that the building will be com-

pleted by Labor Day of this year. That is when the next phase begins: Turning an empty building into a museum. What can you do to help in that effort? Donations of funds, collections, displays, accesso-ries, original parts, tools, and anything else that tells the story of the Model A will be needed. Ad-vance notification of your intent to donate your item or collection would help in the planning. Please inform MAFFI Trustee, Phil Ierardi by email at [email protected], or by phone at (314) 692-2123, of your intentions.

NUTS & BOLTS Keep a tablet of scratch paper in the shop: not

only is it handy for note taking, it’s a perfect place to mix together small amounts of epoxy or JB Weld.

Popsicle sticks can be purchased in craft stores and are great for mixing epoxy or JB Weld.

If you have tips to share, send them to your STA Newsletter editor.
