It is my distinct pleasure to congratulate the participants of the Rolling Rampage onthe Hill, which was held on April 14. I amhonoured to be a patron of this wonderfulinitiative to promote awareness of physicallydisabled athletes.

I speak for my parliamentary colleagues in conveying regret that, due to the federalelection campaign, we could not be inOttawa for this highly anticipated event. Wewholeheartedly appreciate the extraordinarystrength and determination of disabled athletes and look forward to next year’sfriendly competition.

Memories of the 2010 Paralympic Gamesare still vivid in our minds. Our nation wasproud to host the largest gathering of theworld’s elite disabled athletes. We felt trulyprivileged to witness their extraordinary athletic performances and continue to beinspired by their unwavering spirit.

The Rolling Rampage is an innovativeapproach to educating political leaders, youthand the general public on the challengesphysically disabled Canadians surmountevery day. I salute the athletes who took part in this noble initiative.

J’ai le grand plaisir de féliciter les participantsau « Rolling Rampage » sur la Colline duParlement, qui a eu lieu le 14 avril. Je suishonoré d’être un parrain de cette formidableinitiative qui fait la promotion des athlèteshandicapés.

Tout comme mes collègues parlemen-taires, je regrette que la campagne électoralefédérale m’ait empêché d’être à Ottawa pourcet événement fort attendu. Nous reconnais-sons sans réserve la force et la déterminationextraordinaires des athlètes handicapés etavons hâte d’assister à la compétition amicalede l’an prochain.

Les souvenirs des Jeux paralympiques2010 restent gravés dans nos mémoires.Notre pays a accueilli fièrement le plus grand rassemblement des meilleurs athlèteshandicapés du monde. Nous avons été lestémoins privilégiés de leurs performancesathlétiques phénoménales et nous continuons à nous émerveiller devant leurdétermination inébranlable.

Le « Rolling Rampage » représente uneméthode novatrice pour sensibiliser lesdirigeants politiques, les jeunes et le publicaux difficultés que les Canadiens handicapésdoivent surmonter chaque jour. Je salue lesathlètes qui ont pris part à cette noble initiative.

This year’s path leading up to RollingRampage was one built on hard work, dedication, perseverance and incredible positive energy. Participants and their supporters travelled from around the world tobe a part of this incredible event, coming toour nation’s capital for an all-encompassingday of spirit and sport.

As a whole, this year’s Rolling Rampagewould not have been such a great successwithout the assistance and support of volunteers, donors, supporters, friends, familyand, of course, athletes. For all of the athleteswho participated, congratulations on being apart of this event. Your time spent trainingand working towards the successful comple-tion of this day paid off. And for every facet of your support system, thank you as well.

Events such as this one are a gleaminglook into the life of persons with physical disabilities, highlighting not only what theycan do, but also providing an opportunity forable-bodied persons to get a new perspectivejust by participating and being around theenergy of paralympic sport.

We cannot forget our winners this year,athletes whose performances pushed them to the top. Congratulations to Diane Roy ofQuebec and Josh Cassidy of Ontario for winning their 10000M races. I would also liketo recognize Hon. Jim Munson’s Senate Teamfor winning the 4x25 mile relay. A job welldone to all of you!

I can only extend my deepest and warmestcongratulations and thanks to every personwho lent a hand to this year’s RollingRampage. I hope for many more successfulevents in the future.

La capitale de notre pays a accueilli desparticipants et leurs partisans qui sont venus departout sur la planète pour prendre part à cetévénement formidable où s’allient, l’espaced’une journée, la détermination et le sport.

La Déferlante roulante de cette année n’aurait pas remporté un aussi vif succès sansl’aide et le soutien de nombreux bénévoles,donateurs, partisans, amis, membres desfamilles et, bien entendu, athlètes. Je félicitetous les athlètes qui ont pris part à l’événe-ment. Le temps et les efforts que vous avezconsacrés à l’entraînement pour faire de cettejournée une réussite ont porté leurs fruits. Je tiens aussi à remercier sincèrement les personnes qui vous ont appuyé à toutes lesétapes. Ce que vous faites ne serait pas possible sans eux.

Des événements comme celui d’aujour-d’hui jettent un précieux éclairage sur la viedes personnes qui ont un handicap physique,car ils mettent en lumière ce que celles-cipeuvent faire en plus d’ouvrir de nouveauxhorizons aux personnes physiquement aptesen leur donnant l’occasion de participer et de vivre la fièvre du sport paralympique.

Et n’oublions pas nos gagnants de cetteannée, des athlètes que leurs performancesont propulsés au sommet. Félicitations àDiane Roy du Québec et à Josh Cassidy del’Ontario qui ont gagné les épreuves de 10000 mètres. Je félicite aussi l’équipe du Sénatde l’honorable Jim Munson, qui a gagné lerelais 4 x 25 mètres. Chapeau pour votreexcellente prestation!

The 6th annual Rolling Rampage 10kWheelchair Road Race on Parliament Hillis an exciting sporting event that bringstogether the best Paralympic athletes Canadaand the world has to offer. I am honoured toonce again be involved in this year’s race asHonourary Co-Chair.

The Rolling Rampage provides Paralympicathletes with heightened exposure and competitive opportunities. It also sends apowerful message to those who still underes-timate or marginalize those with disabilities.The message is that athletes with disabilitiesdo not bow to those in the upper echelons ofsport; a message that, thanks to events likethe Rolling Rampage, are able to reach awide audience.

As the audience for Paralympic sports continues to grow, the general awarenessabout the capabilities and determination ofits athletes has continued to grow as well.With outstanding Canadian Paralympic athletes like Josh Cassidy and Diane Roy, the value and validity of Paralympic sports inthe minds of Canadians has arguably beenlaid to rest.

I would like to express my appreciation tothe Rolling Rampage’s generous sponsors,ICICI Bank, Scotiabank Group, Suncor Energyand Hyundai; and everyone at the CanadianFoundation for the Physically Disabled, theCanadian Paralympic Foundation and theOttawa Lions Athletics Club. La 6e Déferlante Roulante annuelle en fauteuil roulant sur route de 10 kilomètres surla Colline du Parlement est un événementsportif enlevant qui rassemble les meilleursathlètes paralympiques du Canada, voire dumonde entier. J’ai l’honneur encore cetteannée de m’impliquer dans la course à titrede coprésident honoraire.

La Déferlante roulante donne aux para-lympiens l’occasion de rehausser leur profil etde se mesurer à leurs concurrents. Elleadresse également un message puissant àceux qui continuent de sous-estimer ou demarginaliser les personnes ayant un handi-cap. Ce message, qui rejoint énormément degens grâce à des événements comme laDéferlante roulante, c’est que les athlètesayant un handicap physique n’ont pas à s’incliner devant les autres athlètes au sommet de leur sport.

Alors que croît l’intérêt des audiences pourles sports paralympiques, on note aussi unesensibilisation accrue au sujet des capacités et de la détermination des paralympiens.Grâce à d’excellents athlètes paralympiquescanadiens comme Josh Cassidy et Diane Roy,la valeur et la validité des sports para-lympiques sont désormais bien ancrées dansla réalité des Canadiens.

It is a great pleasure to join you as HonouraryCo-Chair of the 6th annual Rolling Rampageon Parliament Hill.

The Rolling Rampage is an event that aimsto break down the notion that those inwheelchairs are less able or more restrictedthan those without. This is done using sportsas a vehicle to heal, inspire and empower. The Rolling Rampage is a sporting event thatdemonstrates pure ability and determinationin the athletes that take part, and allowsthem to not only share their gift with thewider world, but also to promote active livingand act as role models for people who havebeen marginalized by a disability.

As an avid supporter of the SpecialOlympics, I have worked tirelessly to ensurethat those with intellectual disabilities arebrought to the forefront and recognized forwhat they can do rather than what they cannot do. I share the same drive and passionfor the Paralympics and the athletes thatrefuse to allow any barriers to exist betweenthem and their goals, hopes and dreams.

I would like to thank the CanadianFoundation for the Physically Disabled, theParalympic Foundation and the Ottawa LionsAthletics Club, for everything they have doneto ensure this event is a success. La Déferlante roulante vise à dissiper l’impression que les personnes en fauteuilroulant sont moins capables ou plus limitéesque les autres. Elle met en valeur le sportcomme source de guérison, d’inspiration etd’autonomisation. C’est une série d’épreuvessportives qui témoigne de la capacité et de la détermination prodigieuses des athlètesparticipants et qui permet à ceux-ci nonseulement de faire connaître leurs talents àun vaste public, mais aussi de promouvoir lavie active et de servir de modèles aux personnes marginalisées par un handicap.

Partisan enthousiaste des Jeux olympiquesspéciaux, je travaille sans relâche afin que les personnes qui ont une déficience intellectuelle prennent leur place dans lasociété et soient reconnues pour ce qu’ellespeuvent faire, et non pour ce qu’elles ne peuvent pas faire. J’éprouve la même passionpour les Jeux paralympiques et pour les athlètes qui refusent de voir des obstacles les éloigner de leurs buts, de leurs espoirs etde leurs rêves.

The Canadian Foundation for PhysicallyDisabled Persons (CFPDP) was founded on thebelief of empowering people with disabilitiesand providing them with the tools to obtaintheir highest possible achievements. One ofthe best ways to do that is through the powerof sport, something that can both heal andinspire. Over the years, CFPDP has contributedgreatly to people with disabilities and theirathletic pursuits, Rolling Rampage being ashining example. This event has proven thatsport can afford these exceptional athletes theopportunity to pursue their legitimate aspira-tions and share their gift with the wider world.We have athletes here from all parts of theglobe, and it is apparent that this event hasbecome a symbol within paralympic sport.

I want to take this time to pay special tribute to the official sponsors of RollingRampage: Scotiabank Group; ICICI Bank;Suncor Energy; and Hyundai. Both the faithand generosity of these sponsors have beeninstrumental in the success and growth ofthis event. Depuis sa création, la Canadian Foundationfor Physically Disabled Persons a pour fonde-ment de permettre aux personnes handicapéesde prendre leur destin en main et de les outillerde manière à réaliser leur plein potentiel. Fairedu sport est l’une des meilleures façons d’yparvenir, car c’est une source d’inspiration et desanté. Au fil des ans, la CFPDP a grandementaidé les personnes handicapées à développerleurs habiletés athlétiques. La Déferlanteroulante en est un parfait exemple. Cet événe-ment a montré que le sport peut donner à desathlètes exceptionnels la possibilité de réaliserleurs aspirations légitimes et de montrer leurtalent au monde entier. Cet événement réunitdes athlètes de partout sur la planète, et il estévident qu’il fait maintenant figure de symboledans le monde du sport paralympique.

Rolling Rampage founder and CanadianSenator, Vim Kochhar, was ecstatic butnervous on the morning of April 14,

2011. The Rolling Rampage, an event that pro-motes awareness of disabled athletes, tookplace outside of Toronto for the first time everand on the front steps of Parliament Hill in theNation’s Capital – Ottawa, ON. After 5 years of success in Toronto, Senator

Vim Kochhar and the Canadian Foundation forPhysically Disabled Persons (CFPDP) decidedthat it was time to spread the good intentionsof events like the Rolling Rampage to otherparts of Canada. Ottawa, the second-largestmunicipality in Ontario and the nation’s capi-tal, seemed like the natural destination for theRolling Rampage. “What we had to do was raise some prize

money, invite the best racers in the world andlet them loose in front of one of the most high-ly secured places in the country (ParliamentHill). My first reaction was, ‘This is going to behectic!’ But as the planning progressed, theevent started to come together and before youknew it, it was event day,” says Senator VimKochhar.Canadians from coast-to-coast are generally

The spirit of athletic sport is oftenembodied in a torch of fire represent-ing passion and dedication. For onegrade five Bells Corners Public SchoolStudent, holding it was a dreamcome true. Nicholas Ottomorewasselected to carry the official torch ofthis year’s Rolling Rampage. Holdingthe torch with pride while in a wheel-chair of his own, Nicholas, with the assistance of Senator Vim Kochhar, kicked off the start of the10KM Wheelchair Race. Not Your Regular Rock & Roll

When my good friend Senator VimKochhar asked me if I would partici-pate in Rolling Rampage, I had no idea

what he was talking about. I thought for amoment. Is the senator starting a rock bandbefore he retires at 75 or was this a seniorsmotorcycle gang heading down the highway.Senator Vim as I like to call him has a sense ofhumour but he also has a sense of purpose. Herewe were in the middle of the federal electioncampaign and the good senator was interestedin another race…a race for physically disabledathletes.But these were no ordinary athletes. They

raced in wheelchairs and this race was goingtake place on Parliament Hill. As a reporter formore than 30 years, I covered many uniqueevents on the hill but this was different. With$30,000 in prize money, racers from around the

world prepared to take their positions justbelow The peace tower. But the Senator had other ideas before these

men and women rolled into the spotlight. Fourmember teams of parliamentarians, hill staffand disabled athletes had their chance to race. Thank goodness it was much shorter than the

10 –kilometer main event and that each teammember had to only race 50 meters. Sitting in awheelchair is tough enough racing in one isanother matter. How my team managed to win isstill a mystery. But the main stage belonged to these world

class athletes, especially Canada’s Josh Cassidyand Diane Roy. They won the race and they alsowon over a lot of hearts.

With thousands in attendance, I foundmyself not looking at a disability but men andwomen with amazing strength, stamina andability to do something very few people in theworld can do. Imagine racing 10 K in 23 min-utes. Moments after the race was over, I wasthinking of the thousands of Canadians who arein wheelchairs but not in the limelight. I wasthinking of their everyday courage and thereability, not disability to get on with life. I want to salute Senator Kochhar, a man with

a generous heart for his every day work, not justwith the Rolling Rampage but throughout theentire physically disabled community. I know politicians should never make promis-

es but this is one I will keep alive. Now that Iknow we are not talking about being Rock andRoll promoters, I will work with others next yearto make the Rolling Rampage an annual eventon parliament hill.

La Déferlante roulante

Quand mon ami le sénateur Vim Kochharm’a demandé si je voulais participer à laDéferlante roulante, je n’avais pas la

moindre idée de ce qu’il voulait dire. Parlait-il devagues? Parlait-il des « déferlantes de motos »,ces rassemblements de motocyclistes prenantles routes d’assaut? Je sais que mon ami Vim ale sens de l’humour, mais son humour a toujoursun sens. Nous étions en plein milieu de la cam-pagne électorale fédérale et mon ami s’intéres-sait à un autre type de course… une coursepour athlètes handicapés.Attention, pas n’importe quelle sorte d’ath-

lètes. Des athlètes en fauteuil roulant quiallaient faire leur course en plein sur la Collinedu Parlement. Moi qui ai été journaliste pen-

dant plus de 30 ans, j’ai couvert bien des événe-ments spéciaux sur la Colline, mais cette fois,c’était vraiment différent. Des coureurs dumonde entier allaient se disputer 30 000 $ enprix juste sous les fenêtres de la Tour de la Paix.Mais le sénateur Kochhar a eu d’autres

idées avant le coup de départ. Quatre équipesde parlementaires, de personnel de la Collineet d’athlètes handicapés allaient prendre partà la course. Je remercie le Ciel que notre segment ait

été beaucoup plus court que l’épreuve princi-pale de 10 km et que chaque membre del’équipe avait seulement 50 m à parcourir!S’asseoir dans un fauteuil roulant est déjàassez difficile; s’en servir pour faire une course

applaudir, ce n’est pas leur « incapacité » quej’ai vue, mais des hommes et des femmes dotésd’une force incroyable, de l’endurance et de lacapacité qu’il faut pour accomplir ce que peude gens dans le monde peuvent faire : par-courir 10 km en 23 minutes. Après la course, j’ai pensé aux milliers de

Canadiens et de Canadiennes en fauteuil

roulant qui ne seront jamais applaudis commel’ont été les vainqueurs de la course. J’ai penséà leur courage au quotidien et à leur capacité,non pas à leur incapacité à vivre leur vie.Je tiens à saluer le sénateur Kochhar, un

homme au grand cœur, pour son travail de tousles jours, pas seulement avec la Déferlanteroulante – maintenant je sais pourquoi elle est« roulante » -, mais auprès de l’ensemble despersonnes ayant un handicap physique.Je sais que les politiciens ne devraient jamais

faire de promesses, mais je n’oublierai pas celleque je fais aujourd’hui. Maintenant que je saisqu’il ne s’agit pas d’un gang de motards, je tra-vaillerai avec les autres participants l’anprochain pour faire de la Déferlante roulante unévénement annuel sur la Colline du Parlement.

Après s’être tenue pendant cinq ans àQueen’s Park, à Toronto, la spectaculairecourse de fauteuils roulants Déferlante

roulante change de décor. Pour la toute premièrefois, cette épreuve annuelle s’est déroulée àOttawa, la capitale nationale. Sur la boucle cein-turant la pelouse située devant le Parlement, desathlètes du monde entier se sont disputé le prix leplus important accordé pour une course para-lympique de fauteuils roulants au Canada.C’était la première fois qu’une compétition du

genre avait lieu sur la Colline du Parlement. Les par-ticipants à la Déferlante roulante n’ont peut être pas

tous remporté la victoire, mais ils ontgagné le cœur des résidants d’OttawaGatineau, qui étaient plus de 3 000 àencourager bruyamment et joyeuse-ment les athlètes le matin de lacompétition. « J’étais au CentreRideau et je pouvais entendre lesacclamations de la foule », aindiqué Sarah Madussi, qui s’estensuite rendue sur la Colline duParlement, attirée par l’efferves-cence qui s’en dégageait.

After five years of the Rolling Rampage wheel-chair racers competing in Queen’s Park,Toronto, this spectacular event has found a

new home. For the first time ever, this annual eventhit Ottawa, the Nation’s Capital, inviting athletesfrom around the world to loop the front lawn ofParliament Hill for the largest prize purse inParalympian wheelchair road racing in Canada.Never has an event like the Rolling Rampage hit

Parliament Hill before. The Rolling Rampage hasmade its mark not only on the roadway, but also inthe hearts of the Ottawa-Gatineau residents. Withover 3,000 in attendance, the entire morning wasfilled with wild cheering and chaos. “I could hearthe cheering and the loud noises from where I wasstanding at the Rideau Centre,” said Sarah Madussi,a pedestrian who walked down Rideau Street to fol-low the excitement onto Parliament Hill. For many, the real delight was witnessing the

swift moves of the professional wheelchair ath-letes in action. With eighteen and a half laps and ahandful of tight corners, Ottawa’s very own JoshCassidy stole first place from Australia’s KurtFearnley, who followed a very close second in theMen’s Open. In the Women’s Open, Quebec’s Diane


Roy had a solid first place finish with her fanscheering her on to the last second. Elementary school children were running all

over the lawn banging cheer sticks and climbing onthe barriers holding up cheer signs to encouragethe athletes and the 20 schools competing in theJunior and Senior Relay races. The races resulted ina well-deserved first place win for St. Mary’s Schoolin the Junior category and Greenbank MiddleSchool in the Senior category. It should come as no surprise that the founder of

the Canadian Foundation for Physically DisabledPersons (CFPDP), the Honourable Senator VimKochhar, has involved young minds. “It’s importantfor them to see what these athletes are capable ofand to break down notions of disabilities as a disad-vantage at a young age so they can grow up with aneducated awareness.” In previous years, Executive Director of the

CFPDP, Dorothy Price, believed that the challengefor an event of this nature was about how to builda concrete audience. With over 3,000 in atten-dance, an audience was no longer a challenge, buta strength. The driving force behind this and the many other

events held by the CFPD has been the need forCanadians to see that the wheelchair is no longer asign of disability, but a sign of freedom for those whocannot walk. With the incredible response from thecrowd, the event reached its goal. The day’s events generated a great deal of enthu-

siasm for the feats over-come by the athletesand, in response, dozensof the students crowdedaround the professionalathletes hoping for theirsignatures and maybe ahug. There is no doubtthat attendees walkedaway with a new appreci-ation for the strugglesfacing many Canadianswith disabilities. TheRolling Rampage wasdefinitely welcomed withopen arms in its newhome in Ottawa.

Ce sont respectivement lesécoles St. Mary’s et Greenbank qui ont remporté desvictoires bien méritées dans chacune des catégories.Bien entendu, le fondateur de la Canadian

Foundation for Physically Disabled Persons(CFPDP), l’honorable sénateur Vim Kochhar, a sucapter l’attention des jeunes. « Il est importantpour eux de voir ce dont ces athlètes sont capableset de constater qu’une incapacité n’est pas undésavantage. “Promoting a broader awareness of the disability community’sabilities is at the heart of everything we do,” says Price. “So manypeople get hung up on the dis in disability that they never getbeyond it. There’s only so much we can do as one organization tocreate meaningful opportunities for people but if you can mobi-lize the public to look at these issues in a new way, then things

start to change across the board. In thelong run, real change will only comewhen everybody pulls together.”

Since 1985 the CFPDP has raisedmore than $25 million in support ofCanadians with disabilities. That money,says Price, has been channeled into proj-ects as diverse as housing, emergencyintervention and education for Canada’sdeaf-blind community; publishing; com-munity sports and recreation programs;the Terry Fox Hall of Fame; and Canada’sParalympic movement.

“We’ve always tried to direct themoney to areas where, for one reasonor another, there seems to be an urgentshortfall. The deaf-blind community,for example, is so small they don’t evenappear on most people’s radar and yettheir need for specialized services ishuge. And Paralympic sports. I thinkwe’ve seen a real breakthrough in thelast ten years but there’s still so muchmore we could be doing to help theseathletes reach their full potential. And

Un défenseur persistant pourl’égalité, la Fondation a soutenu la promotion de services etd’idées pour l’accès et la participation communautaire d’handi-cap. Au total, la CFPDP a lancé plus de 50 projets et d’événementssur l’échelle nationale qui favorisent la sensibilisation et le soutienpour des causes et des initiatives qui égalisent les chances et per-mettre à plus de personnes avec des handicapés à participerpleinement à la vie de leur communautés. The CFPDP’s many endeavours include:

• ROTARY CHESHIRE HOMES, an innovative bar-rier-free apartment building in Toronto for peoplewith dual sensory loss. Developed by the CFPDP inpartnership with Cheshire Homes Foundation andthe Rotary Club of Toronto-Don Valley, RCH wasNorth America’s first private housing complexdesigned specifically for the deaf-blind. TheFoundation has also helped RCH develop emergencyintervention services for the deaf-blind community.

• THE CANADIAN HELEN KELLER CENTRE, thenation's only training centre for the deaf-blind.Opened in May, 2001, with funding from the CFPDP, theRotary Club of Toronto-Don Valley and the OntarioTrillium Foundation, CHKC offers temporary livingquarters and one-on-one training in independent livingskills, orientation and mobility, leisure activities andsocialization, computers, reading and writing Braille,finger spelling, adapted American Sign Language andTwo-Hand Manual. CHKC also works to raise awarenessand advocates with the Deaf-Blind Community forgreater access and inclusion.

• PARALYMPIC SPORTS. Ever since the first GreatValentine Gala, which highlighted the achievementsof Canada’s team at the 1984 Summer Paralympics,the CFPDP has been an active sponsor of Paralympicathletes and the Canadian Paralympic Committee.In 2000, the CFPDP was an official sponsor ofCanada’s team at the Sydney Paralympics, donating

over $100,000. The Foundation also supported ath-letes at the 2002 Winter Paralympics in Salt LakeCity, in 2004 in Athens and again this past winter inTorino. The CFPDP’s annual Rolling Rampage for theworld’s elite wheelchair athletes is also a projectundertaken in partnership with the CPC.

• THE WHYNOT MARATHON, the CFPDP’s epic11,000 km national torch relay in support of theParalympics in 1996. Enlisting 8,000 torch bearersand 150,000 runners in over 700 communities acrossthe country, the WhyNot Marathon won widespreadrecognition for the achievements of Canadians withdisabilities.

• SUPPORT FOR CANADIAN ROTARY CLUBS. Anorganization with a long history of involvement in thedisability community, Canada’s Rotarians havereceived over $400,000 from the CFPDP for disabilityprojects in towns and cities across the country.

• THE TERRY FOX HALL OF FAME. The CFPDP’sflagship awareness project, the Hall of Fame is a per-manent public tribute to the achievements of peoplewith disabilities and the many people who haveserved their cause. Located in downtown Toronto, itis chaired by the Honourable David Crombie and isopen to the public 365 days a year.

• THE ETERNAL FLAME OF HOPE. Ignited in1996 by Governor General Roméo LeBlanc, the flamestill burns on the public square of Toronto’s MetroHall as a permanent symbol ofthe dreams and triumphs of thedisability community.

• THE GREAT VALENTINEGALA. First staged in 1985, theCFPDP’s cherished annualfundraiser has become one of the nation’s bestknown and most enduring tributes to the aspira-tions and achievements of people with disabilities.

• STEP UP TO CHANGE, Canadian ParalympianJeff Adams’ extraordinary wheelchair ascent ofToronto’s CN Tower in 2002 to promote greater aware-ness of accessibility issues.

• PUBLISHING. The CFPDP has a long involvementin publishing, including, in the early years GalaMagazine and a two-year partnership with DisabilityToday; over 55 issues of WhyNot Magazine; and some260 pages of special sections published in the TorontoStar and The Globe and Mail.

CHKC offrel’habitation temporaire pour la formation “one-on-one”pour la compétence de vie autonome, l’orientation et lamobilité, activités de loisirs et de socialisation, d’ordi-nateurs, la lecture et l’écriture en Braille, la dactylolo-gie (finger spelling), la langue de signes américaine etle “two-hand manual”. CHKC travaille également à sen-sibiliser et plaider la cause avec la communauté sourdeet aveugle pour obtenir l’accès total et l’inclusion.

• SPORTS PARALYMPIQUES. Depuis le premierGrand Gala Valentine, qui a souligné les réalisationsde l’équipe canadienne aux Jeux paralympique d’été1984, le CFPDP a été un commanditaire actif d’ath-lètes paralympiques et du comité paralympique cana-dien. En 2000, le CFPDP a été un commanditaire offi-ciel de l’équipe canadienne aux Jeux paralympiquesde Sydney avec un don de $100,000. La fondation aégalement soutenu les athlètes aux Jeux para-lympiques d’hiver 2002 à Salt Lake City, en 2004 àAthènes et l’hiver passé à Turin. Every once in a while, a unique opportunitypresents itself and ends up becoming amemorable and rewarding experience. On

April 13th, a group of intervenors and tenants fromRotary Cheshire Homes travelled to Ottawa to takepart in the 6th Annual Rolling Rampage. The excite-ment leading up to the day of departure was exhila-rating. We were all so thrilled to step outside ourdaily routines and experience what our country’scapital had to offer. Our journey to and from Ottawa was smooth and

without incident. We travelled by train, enjoyedeach other’s company and relaxed while we gazed atthe scenic view. A lucky few even got to travel firstclass! Jeff, one of the relay race participants, uses awheelchair and it just so happened that the train’sonly accessible car was first class. What a luxury! After a good night’s rest, we were ready to

race! Bright and early, we made our way toParliament Hill and registered to participate inthe relay race. The start line was crowded with13 teams competing for 1st place. The race wasexciting and the competition was fierce. Ourteam finished in 8th place, with a time of 3:01.85minutes. It should be noted that the RotaryCheshire Homes team was made up of individuals

who are deaf-blind. What a great accomplishment! Most impressive was the 10K Wheelchair Road

Race. The race featured world class wheelchair ath-letes from around the world. To witness theirstrength, endurance and commitment to the sportwas truly inspiring. Following the race was a tour of the Parliament

Building and an excellent reception in one of its his-toric, majestic rooms. It was truly breath taking.Unfortunately, everything must come to an end.

Despite the gusty winds and the chilly temperatureOttawa had to offer, we headed back to Toronto withwarm memories and tired feet.It was an amazing experience we all won’t soon

forget.

Parfois, une occasion unique se présente etfinit par devenir une expérience mémorableet enrichissante. Le 13 avril dernier, un

groupe du Rotary Cheshire Homes se sont rendu àOttawa pour participer à la 6 ème Rolling Rampage.L’excitation précédant le jour du départ était exal-tante. Nous étions tous si heureux de sortir de notreroutine quotidienne et de l’expérience que la capi-tale de notre pays avait à offrir. Nous avons voyagé en train et notre voyage à




Cheshire Homes était constituée de personnes quisont sourdes et aveugles. Quelle grande réussite! Le plus impressionnant a été la course aux fau-

teuils roulants 10K. La course a mis en vedette desathlètes handicapés de classe mondiale. C’étaitvraiment inspirant de témoigner leur force, leurendurance et leur engagement envers le sport. Après la course, nous avons visité l’édifice du

Parlement et nous étions accueillis dans une sallemajestueuse pour des rafraîchissements. L’archi-tecture du bâtiment était comme l’intérieur deHogwarts (pour tous les fans de Harry Potter).C’était vraiment à couper le souffle. Malheureusement, tout doit venir à sa fin.

Malgré les rafales du vent et la température fraîched’Ottawa, nous sommes retournés à Toronto avecdes souvenirs chaleureux et les pieds fatigués. Ce fut une expérience incroyable que nous ne

seront pas prêts d’oublier.

Ottawa était agréable et sans incident. Nous avonssaisi cette opportunité pour nous détendre etregarder la vue panoramique! Quelques chanceuxont même pu voyager en première classe! Jeff, l’undes participants en course de relais, utilise un fau-teuil roulant et le seul train de voiture accessibleétait de première classe. Quel luxe! Dès notre arrivée, nous avons vite compris qu’à

Ottawa, la température était beaucoup plus froideque Toronto. Mais quelle belle ville! Après une bonne nuit de repos, nous étions

prêts pour la course! Nous avons fait notre cheminvers la colline du Parlement et nous nous sommesinscrits pour participer à la course de relais 1K. Laligne de départ était bondée, avec 13 équipes encompétition pour la première place. La course aété passionnante et la compétition a été féroce.Notre équipe a terminé en 8 ème place, avec untemps de 3:01.85. Il faut noter que l’équipe Rotary
