winter in one piece!

home energy Saving tipSJust as we are about to start unpacking our heaters and electric blankets - you might give a thought to our not-so-reliable energy sources, not to the mention the increasing costs! Thankfully, we have some energy saving tips that will help cut your energy costs to the bare minimum.• When using the oven, don't open the door to take a peek as you are allowing 25ºC

to escape, which increases cooking time and energy needed.• As long as your oven is on, cook several items at the same time• If you use glass or ceramic dishes and pans, you can turn your oven temperature

down 25ºC and foods will cook just as quickly.• When cooking on the stove, make sure that the pan or pot you plan on using covers

the heating element as this will ensure that more heat is available for cooking and less lost to surrounding air. In fact, a pan smaller that the heating element will loose up to 40% of heat that was supposed to be used for cooking.

• The microwave is just as efficient and uses 50% less energy that the stove or oven. They're especially efficient for smaller portions or items.

• Slow cookers (crock-pots) are perfect for busy families. Electric skillets can steam, fry, sauté, stew, bake or roast a variety of food items and some can double their serving dishes.

• If you're truly adventurous, don't confine your cooking to the kitchen. Brave the cold and have a braai!

• Refrigerators are one of the largest energy consumers in your house, often accounting for as much as 15% of your home's total energy usage, so keep the fridge doors closed as much as possible!

Don’t forget the olD favouriteS – they really Do work!• Unplug all appliances and cell phone chargers that are not in use.• Turn off your geyser between uses, the water stays warm for longer than you think!• An electric blanket is great for warming your bed, but rather switch it off when you

climb into bed. And if it’s over 10 years old, get a new one• Switch off all lights in rooms that are not occupied.

Saving energy in and around the house should actually be practiced all year round to help you save both energy and money!

health tipSGreat news - winter is the best season to improve your immunity! Its common knowledge that most of us tend to eat more in winter, what’s not is that it is totally fine! Believe it or not, foods are better digested in winter therefore adding more nourishment to the body. Immune system boosting foods are fresh, organic, easy to digest, pure and wholesome. Here are a few to keep you going:

• Vegetables, including carrots, potatoes, beans, peas and onions contain a combination of vitamins, anti-oxidants and energy, so stock up on all your favourites.

• Wholegrain cereals and pulses are high energy protein’s that provide your body with enough fuel to combat the cold.

• Fresh and dried fruits are great sources of fibre, iron, magnesium, calcium, vitamins as well as an excellent source of energy.

• Spices such as mustard and dill seeds are a very good remedy for winter coughs and flu, stimulating appetite and digestion as well as increasing blood circulation. Turmeric is a potent anti-microbial immune system builder.

• Basil is a wonderful herb that protects against colds and fever and helps strengthen immunity.

preventing ColDS anD fluPrevention is always better than cure – that said, a flu jab might be in order to set you up for a flu free winter. If that’s not for you, eating healthy and exercising is a good start and will keep you and your body in the health zone. Start stocking up on the essentials just in case – med lemon, strepsils, nasal decongestants and the like. Be aware of self medicating too much though, if you are not getting better a quick visit to your GP might be in order.

sunday drivesgrEytoN, caPE ovErbErgThe peaceful little town of Greyton lies surrounded by the Riviersonderend (river without end) mountains and farmlands some 30 minutes from Somerset West and is best explored on foot or bicycle – preferably with a basket up front!.

Greyton is fast earning the reputation as a perfect weekend getaway. Essentially lost in time, Greyton is a picture-perfect rendition of an old town with its gravel roads, thatched roof cottages, pretty little gardens and beautifully restored buildings. The people of Greyton are friendly and the route into the village along the R406 as it winds its way through the emerald hills and fields of wheat, barley, oats and lucerne of the Cape Overberg.

The sun always seems to shine in this part of the world and the oak-lined streets of Greyton, where ducks cavort in the canals and donkey carts clatter, are as much a way of life as the many outdoor activities. Greyton lies at the foot of the Riviersonderend Mountain range and, besides the multitude of day walks in the area there are also a couple of hiking trails.

The historical buildings of the Post House, St Andrews Church, the Smouswinkel and a number of others, are worth the visit alone and, for Capetonians especially, Greyton has become an antique and craft hunters’ delight with everything from bygone treasures to pottery. There is a craft market every Sunday in the Greyton village square and the annual Rose festival, in October / November is not to be missed.

A weekend away or just a quick meander on a Sunday in the quaint village of Greyton with its shops, restaurants, pubs and art galleries is simply a pleasure.

riEbEEk kastEEl, sWartlaNd The small town of Riebeek Kasteel lies hidden in the heart of the Riebeek Valley on the slopes of the Kasteelberg Mountains, an easy 90 minute drive from Somerset West through the beautiful town of Wellington into the heart of the Swartland.

It is a stunningly romantic old village with miles of olive and vine valleys bathed in sunshine, making one feel like you're in the Tuscan hills of Italy. The town's name is a traditional mixture of Jan van Riebeeck and the Kasteelberg that stands firm in amongst olive groves, vineyards, wheat fields and sunshine virtually the whole year round. But there is nothing traditional about the vibrant community that lends the town such appeal.

The local shops, bistros, restaurants and art studios are welcoming and worth a visit.

Riebeek Kasteel's sister village, Riebeek West, lies really close to Riebeek Kasteel. It is a few minutes drive from the one to the other. Together they make for a lovely day and a wonderful place to spend a few idyllic days exploring the countryside.

villiErsdorP, caPE ovErbErgLying in the centre of a flourishing apple-growing region, which also happens to produce grapes, onions, peaches and apricots, it’s not hard to imagine Villiersdorp’s prettiness and its attraction to visitors. The quaint little town lies just 45 minutes from Somerset West and only 30 minutes from Franschhoek making it ideally placed and an appealing option not just for a Sunday drive.

It is the collection of old Victorian houses, cottages and smallholdings, enhanced by its thriving artists’ community, who have been drawn here largely by the peace and beauty of the surrounds, that give Villiersdorp its character. Autumn is a particularly beautiful time of year in Villiersdorp as the many tree-lined avenues are heavy with leaves of every colour, and in October, at the end of the winter fruit season, Villiersdorp celebrates its annual harvest festival.

HEldErbErg 4x4The Helderberg 4x4 trail is a mere 7 km from Somerset West, featuring an easy and pleasant route for amateurs and skilled drivers alike. Drivers will start at the Helderberg Farm and obtain the required permits at the tea garden. The route is about 12 km long and well marked. HEldErbErg NaturE rEsErvEThis 407 hectare nature reserve, initially a wild flower garden, was proclaimed a reserve in 1960 to preserve an important enclave of Mesic Mountain Fynbos. Along with the incredible plant diversity, the reserve has a rich fauna. There are also several lovely walking trails. Services in the reserve include an information centre, plant herbarium, gift shop, indigenous nursery, resource centre, walking paths, Oak Café restaurant, picnic area, facilities for the disabled and ablutions. If you or someone close to you is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, forget about getting help from medical aid – in most cases, it is simply unavailable. This is the stark reality in South Africa today that Alzheimer’s South Africa hopes to change with an initiative called Alzheimer’s in Action.

“Alzheimer’s affects thousands of families every year with devastating results. In spite of this, most South African medical aids do not recognise it as a chronic illness,” says Alzheimer’s SA regional director Jill Robson.

Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive and terminal illness with no cure. It generally affects people 65 years of age and older, and sufferers need full-time care when the disease reaches advanced stages. In addition to the emotional trauma that the families of sufferers go through, there is the cost of care and drugs to treat the symptoms. There are currently some 750 000 people in South Africa who have the disease, with many facing financial ruin as a result.

Paying for care is problematic as Alzheimer’s disease is not listed as a chronic disease, which leaves sufferers incapable of accessing the much-needed support of their medical aid. By definition, a chronic condition is an ailment that has to be treated on an ongoing basis for more than three months. The chronic disease list is a regulated compilation of 25 life-threatening conditions requiring treatment for over 12 months and which may not be excluded by medical schemes. Alzheimer’s is not one of them.

Alzheimer’s in Action hopes to change the situation and has launched a lobbying website – www.alzheimersinaction - as a call to action. The site was launched to try and persuade government to persuade the medical aids to include Alzheimer’s disease in their future planning. “We would like them to pay for day and respite care and to treat the disease as a chronic condition, paying for the medication on chronic,” says Robson. “We want Alzheimer’s and the other dementias treatment to be included in the list of Prescribed Minimum Benefits. If conditions are included in the list medical aids have to pay for them.”

Alzheimer’s in Action is encouraging people to go to the website and sign the petition. “We also want people to send us stories of their experiences with the disease – good and bad. This will help us focus the attention of government and medical aids on this dire need.”
