My Dear Ones in Christ,

I shared a story at most of the Confirma�ons I did this past year that I want to share with you. It tells of a day in the life of the famous ar�st Michelangelo. It seems that as he was pu�ng the finishing touches on a huge and beau�ful statue of a horse a li le boy wandered into his studio and was absolutely astonished. Wide-eyed and breathless, he asked Michelangelo, “How did you know there was a horse inside that ‘rock’?” “Well,” Michelangelo replied, “I took my chisel in one hand and my hammer in the other and, li le by li le, I began to chip away at everything that was not a horse and, here it is!”

My brothers and sisters, I think that the story above is a beau�ful symbol of how God works with us, how we are transformed, one chip at a �me, by His love and grace. Every day and through a whole life�me He ‘chips away’ at everything that is not ‘Him’ in our life, that is, everything that is not true, beau�ful and good. Hope-fully, by the end of our �me on earth, the ‘final product’ is this wonderful, beau�ful, incredible image of who and how God is. Our theme for the Regional Congress this year, then, is just right: Disciple! Walk in God’s Transforming Light. I like the language. It is no mere sugges�on. It is more like a mandate and a call to ac-�on. It is a plea to let God ‘work’ on you.

May this Congress fill your hearts and minds with new ideas and inspira�on. May the transforming power of God overwhelm you in the best possible way. God bless you, always and all ways!

ORDER OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS

Exploring the liturgical and catechetical connections

The Office for Worship (OFW) in collaboration with the Office of Religious Education presents again a program to train catechists to minister to adults and children of a catechetical age who seek Baptism in the Church. During this program, team members explore the connections between good liturgy and good catechesis. We will do this by presenting a series of interactive workshops that will give an overview of the Initiation process and the prayer experiences that that drive the process. This will offer participants the opportunity to

experience and personally reflect on significant aspects of the ritual. We will present a different step of the Initiation process in each pasto-ral region. Presenters include experienced Initiation ministers from around the archdiocese as well as neighboring dioceses. Bring your

Rite book to the sessions. The OFW again will offer a certificate in Basic Initiation MinistryBasic Initiation MinistryBasic Initiation MinistryBasic Initiation Ministry for those who participate in all five-day long workshops and complete

the project in a related parish ministry. Completion of certification may be done one year or extended over a three-year period. For those who attended some but not all the classes last year you need only attend the sessions you missed last year.

If you wish to take advantage of this opportunity, registration for the three-session track in each pastoral region is necessary in order to ensure your place. We will keep attendance for each session in each region. Certificates granted based on attendance at all 15 sessions and

satisfactory completion of the project relative to the parish ministry of the candidate. The OFW is grateful for the opportunity to collaborate with the Regional Catechetical Congresses to offer this formation opportunity.

She was involved in this ministry for many years before taking over the responsibility of coordinating the process in the parish.

But I Am Just a Kid… Magdalena Arellano Through baptism, we are all called to be missionaries. Our church by its very nature is missionary since its beginning “Go, therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Fa-ther and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to obey every-thing I have commanded you.” Mat.28:19-20. This session will focus on how to empower children in elementary and middle school age to live out their call to mission as their baptismal right. Missionary Childhood Association gives ideas and resources on how to make the connection between action, reflection and prayer. Motivating them to model and teach others through example as part of their daily lives, the values taught to us by Jesus of compassion and caring for those that are defenseless and cannot speak for themselves. Discovering that their own prayers, personal sacrifices, and financial help make a faith-filled difference for their mission family—and make them missionar-ies today. Magdalena Arellano is currently the Program Coordinator for the Missionary Childhood Association in the Mission Office of the Archdiocese of LA. She promotes, coordinates, advocates and devel-ops education in fostering a missionary spirit in elementary and mid-dle school students for the Missionary Childhood Association which carries their work under the Pontifical Mission Societies. Prior to being part of the Mission Office, she was a Youth Minister at her home parish, St. Agatha Church in LA for five years and a catechist for more than ten years. Her combined years as a Youth Minister and catechist have given her extensive experience in working closely with children and youth.

This workshop will include elements of liturgy, Christian anthropolo-gy (our humanity and identity in light of the Scriptures) with a song or two about our core identity before the Lord. Bishop Brennan grew up in the San Fernando Valley, one of ten children born to Roger and Helen Brennan. He attended St. Eliza-beth’s Church and school in Van Nuys, graduated from Notre Dame HS in 1972 and graduated from St. John’s Seminary College in 1976 and after four more years of graduate studies at the Theologate of St. John’s Seminary was ordained a priest for the LA Archdiocese in 1980. Bishop Joe was assigned to Immaculate Heart of Mary, St. Linus, the Cathedral of St. Vibiana then became Pastor of St. Linus and then Holy Trinity Church. From 2012 to 2015 he was the Mod-erator of the Curia and Vicar General for the Archbishop of Los An-geles before his appointment as Auxiliary Bishop of the San Fernando Region in 2015.

Jesus is the model of forgiveness and asks us to forgive; however this is not always easy! This presentation will provide us with an understanding of the link between unresolved anger and forgiveness. We will study how God has designed our brains to understand, process and benefit from forgiveness. It will provide you with powerful new tools to be able to forgive. Paul Brogan, MFT is a Catholic Marriage and Family Therapist in Encino. He also teaches in the Psychology Department at Mount St. Mary’s College in Los Angeles. He teaches classes on Loss and Grief, Trauma, Alcohol and Substance Abuse, Bullying and Truancy, and Spousal Abuse. Originally from Ireland, he has completed graduate studies in theology and psychology and he regularly presents at local schools and parishes.

She left Southern California for St. Mary's College of California in Moraga graduating in 2000 with a BS in Psychology and Religious Studies. She then proceeded into a pastoral ministry program at the Francis-can School of Theology in Berkeley, California. Completing her MA for a Multicultural Church in 2004 she remained in the bay area 3 more years as a High School Youth Ministry and Confirmation Co-ordinator at the Catholic Community of Pleasanton. Moving back to the Los Angeles Area she took the Campus Ministry position at San Gabriel Mission High School where she has been teaching reli-gion and psychology as well as theory of knowledge in the IB pro-gramme for over 10 years. As a life-long learner she acquired her second masters in Catholic School Administration and is currently the Assistant Principal at San Gabriel Mission High School. Raquel was commissioned in 2012 as a Master Catechist for the state of California and has been a High School Confirmation program con-sultant and ministry formation center team member in both the San Gabriel and San Pedro Regions.

Pope Francis stressed the importance of teaching children how to show love for God through prayer. “It is beautiful when mothers teach their little children to blow a kiss to Jesus or to Our Lady. What tenderness there is in this!” he said. “In that moment the child's heart is trans-formed into a place of prayer. And this is a gift of the Holy Spirit.” Marie Slaton began her ministry in education in 1967 at St. Bonaven-ture School in Cincinnati, Ohio. Since then she has taught grade school, high school , and college classes. She has served as a national speaker as a Certified Activity Consultant. She is a graduate of the Bible Institute and is a Master Catechist. She has twice been a pre-senter at the National Youth Ministry Conference. Her ministry is to pass on the faith in creative ways that energize both students and their catechist. Practical materials are a component of her presenta-tion. Though we understand that God has no gender, it is only natural that we use our own experience with our early fathers when pondering God under this title. In this presenta-tion we will explore what “father” might mean to some of us, espe-cially our students, some 40% of whom live in a home without a father present. It has been said that if fatherlessness were a disease, the CDC would declare a national emergency. What can and should our response as Catechists be? Carmen J. Vadillo-Garcia, a Master Catechist for the ADLA, is an enthusiastic educator who served fourteen years as a busy principal at an ethnically diverse elementary school serving many low-income families. Ms. Garcia holds a Master Degree in Curriculum and In-struction and currently serves as Assistant Superintendent of Catholic Schools supervising 31 out of 209 elementary schools for the Archdi-ocese of Los Angeles. Estas son las llamadas antagonistas. El antagonismo ha sido uno que se ha propagado de forma vertiginosa en todo el mundo, y la Iglesia no es la excepción. ¿Quién no se las ha encontrado alguna vez? En este taller hablaremos de los tipos de per-sonas difíciles que podemos encontrar en la Iglesia y cómo lidiar con ellas para no dañar la casa de Dios. Luis Díaz es creador del programa social “Emoción Activa” el cual ofrece una serie de talleres informativos a cerca de problemas sociales como la violencia en las pandillas, la drogadicción y la violencia do-méstica entre otros. Yunuen Trujillo Este taller está inspirado por el libro más nuevo del padre James Mar-tin S.J. “Construyendo Puentes: Cómo la Iglesia Católica y la Comu-nidad LGBT Pueden Entablar una Relación Basada en el Respeto, la Compasión y la Sensibilidad”. Llevaremos a cabo ejercicios prácticos para desarrollar nuestro entendimiento de la empatía y nuestra capaci-dad de escucha. Éstas herramientas serán beneficiosas no solo para facilitar relaciones constructivas con la comunidad LGBT y sus fami-lias, sino para cualquier otro ministerio y para mejorar el diálogo en cualquiera de los temas difíciles de hoy en día. Lic. Yunuen Trujillo ha trabajado por más de 10 años con grupos de jóvenes adultos. Como parte del Equipo de Pastoral Juvenil Arquidio-cesano, ha sido conferencista y coordinadora regional, encargada de programas de formación, y conductora de “PJLA Radio-TV”.
