Students from Bridget Dontz’s biology class at CASMAN Academy recentlytoured the Grand Rapids Museum exhibit of Bodies Revealed as part of their studies. It coincided with the students’ study of the human body.

Teachers are always looking for inter-sting ways to inspire their students in theearning process, and there are times whenhe old saying about “seeing is believing”roves to be the best method of getting theoints across to those young minds.

CASMAN Alternative Academy biology eacher Bridget Dontz has always been onef those educators who has found innova-ive ways to bring home the subject materi-l to her students in a meaningful manner.hat is the reason that Dontz knew she had

o find funding for her biology students to

ttend the Bodies Revealed exhibit after itame to the Grand Rapids Museum.

“It fit in really well with the unit of tudy we were doing on human systems,”aid Dontz. “I saw it advertised, and my irst thought was if I can get the funds, hen we need to go. We worked with theEEDS after school program on it. They overed our transportation costs, and theids all paid $10 to cover their museumee.”

Dontz said the students immediately ought into the program. She said the reac-ion from them was almost instantaneousfter they entered the museum.

“We had 25 kids that made the trip,

long with three parents,” said Dontz. “Theids were actually thanking me before weere halfway through the exhibit, and it

urned out to be a lot of fun.“They have full human bodies exposed

hat are preserved in a special way. Eachoom was a different system of the body.hey had full bodies enclosed in cases, andhole digestive systems. Something else

hey had was a healthy organ, and then oneith cancer to show the difference.

The exhibit utilizes 14 full body speci-ens and over 200 organs to tell the story

f how the various body systems work. It

is something that is so moving that many people who view it often remark how muchthey have learned from it.

“We were lucky enough to have a coupleof people from the museum that gave extrainformation on the exhibits, and that wasvery helpful,” said Dontz. “They kids wereextremely excited to have the time not only to view that exhibit, but to walk aroundand view other things as well.”

The polymer preservation process is arevolutionary technique in which humantissue is preserved permanently by utilizingsilicone rubber. The utilization of this pro-

cess presents decay and keeps it availablefor study for an indefinite period of time.It allows a closer look at the skeletal,

muscular, nervous, respiratory, digestive, urinary, reproductive, endocrine and cir-culatory systems. Dontz said the studentswere very interested and had been work-ing up to going to the exhibit for weeks inadvance.

“We had partner groups that researchedthe human body system, and did a presen-tation before we went to Grand Rapids,”

Kendra C. ThompsonArchitects of Manistee and45th Parallel ConstructionManagement of TraverseCity have been selectedby the volunteer VogueTheatre project leadershipteam to oversee architectur-al design and constructionmanagement for restor-

ing downtown Manistee’sVogue Theatre.

The restoration initia-tive was announced on Feb.9, when Academy Award-winning filmmaker MichaelMoore pledged to assist inrestoring and reopeningthe theater, much as hedid for the State Theatre inTraverse City.

Kendra Thompson, aManistee native, foundedKendra C. ThompsonArchitects in 1990 as a pro-fessional architectural firm

dedicated to serving clientsby producing quality archi-

tecture and planning. The firm has provided

its services for severalprominent Manistee devel-opments, including thenew Manistee County Blacker Airport terminal, the renovation of the his-toric Ramsdell Inn and therenovation of the Briney

Building.Steve Steimel and Brad

Warren founded 45thParallel Construction in2005 to specialize in con-struction management forcommercial, industrialand residential projects innorthwest Michigan.

The firm has providedconstruction services for theCrystal Lakes Art Center,Oryana Natural Foods, the Great Lakes Children’sMuseum, Gold CoastMarina and others.

“We were gratified tohave had outstanding can-

didates for these positionsthat are critically importantto the restoration of theVogue Theatre,” said Cyndy Fuller, executive director of the Alliance for EconomicSuccess, which is servingto coordinate The VogueTheatre Project. “The lead-ership team found that

these two firms providedthe right blend of experi-ence, interest and willing-ness to work on a project

that will be largely volun-teer-driven and rely oncharitable contributions of time, materials and fund-ing to complete.

“Based on the selectionof these firms by the leader-ship team, the Alliance forEconomic Success will now prepare contractual agree-

ments that will define theirwork plan and schedule.”

Fuller said that the firstorder of business will be

for the two firms to work together to develop a moredefinitive cost estimate andschedule for completingthe restoration, reflectingthe substantial outpouringof community willingnessto volunteer both timeand materials toward theproject.

Fuller said that the costestimate will also enablethe capital campaign toproceed in earnest to raise

funds through the chari-table contributions of indi-viduals and private foundtions. A capital campaignfund has been establishedat the Manistee County Community Foundation.

CASMAN: FROM PAGE 1said Dontz. “I never taught it that way before and I think the kids got more out of it this way.”

Dontz said she had been talking to the studentsabout a month and half before they went about theexhibit, and it seemed to really get the children enthusedabout the trip.

“It was a good time and they really learned from theexperience,” said Dontz.

For the students, it really was a case of “seeing isbelieving,” and it was another way to drive home the

point in a biology class in a unique and interesting man-ner.

Every year it amazesme the sacrifices thatScience Olympiad studentsgo through to prepare forthat one big moment inthe Regional competitionthat they hope will lead to achance at the state finals.

Team members liter-ally practice for monthsputting in countless hoursperfecting their skills for asingle event that often may only take mere minutes tocomplete. The pressure isenormous for such youngshoulders to bear, but they do it with a smile and con-fidence well beyond theiryoung age.

When they do competeat the regional tourna-ment there aren’t bleach-

ers filled with cheeringfans, a marching band orcheerleaders urging themon with bright pom pomsand spirited cheers. In mostinstances there are only afew parents, fellow teammembers and a few volun-teer coaches that witnesstheir big moment.

It is kind of sad whenyou actually think aboutit, because nothing saysmore about the educa-tional process than ScienceOlympiad. It takes the

young minds and chal-lenges them to expandtheir horizons to areas they haven’t ventured before, and more importantly to doit in competition.

Here in ManisteeCounty we have beenblessed with some out-standing Science Olympiadteams and it speaks vol-umes for the teachers andcoaches that teach theseyoung people.

This past weekend, stu-dents from the ManisteeArea Public, Manistee

Catholic Central andBear Lake schools did usproud once again at theRegional competition thatwas held at Mid-MichiganCommunity College inHarrison. All the kids putforth tremendous effortsand the Manistee HighSchool, Manistee MiddleSchool and ManisteeCatholic Central Juniorhigh teams will have theopportunity to take it to thenext level. That is becausethey finished first and sec-

ond respectively in theirRegional, earning all threea spot in the state finals atEast Lansing in April.

I have been cover-ing Science Olympiad fora lot of years, and whatimpresses me about it ismany times it gives kidsthat don’t get the oppor-tunity to shine in athleticstheir well deserved momentin the sun. What it alsoproves is all three schooldistricts that participate inthis event have their priori-ties in the right place -- inproducing the best possiblestudents.

Manistee High Schoolfinished second only to amuch larger Cadillac HighSchool in their regional.Coach Tom Northrupdeserves a lot of credit forthe job he did with thisyoung team.

An equal pat on theback should go to ManisteeCatholic’s Joyce Bergel.

They finished right behindManistee High School witha third place, and that isgood company for a schoolthat only has 57 studentsto choose from at the highschool level.

That is even moreimpressive when you lineit up against the fact thatmost of the other schoolshave more students thanthat in one grade to choosefrom for their teams.

Simply incredible is

about the only way todescribe the job ManisteeMiddle School coachesMichelle LaPrad and MattPhillips have done over theyears with that program. The numbers speak loudclear -- 12 regional titles in13 years.

Wow.If they had a Hall of

Fame for coaches, this pairdeserves to have their pic-tures at the head of the list.

Their team’s 11 firstplace medals this year

were also impressive and itshows these kids know theirstuff. No one can deny they didn’t earn it with the hoursthey put in over the pastseveral months.

What is equally impressive is coach EdKolanowski’s Manistee

Catholic Central junior highteam. Being the smallestschool in terms of studentsin the eight-team regional, the Sabers came home with10 first place medals.

Double wow.What always amazes

me is how many of extracurricular activities theManistee Catholic Centralkids are involved in dur-ing a school year. They arevirtually like the Energizerbunnies in that they keepgoing and going and going.

However, when youhave an academic compe-tition of this nature, it isobvious they are gettingfirst-rate education in theirschool. MCC teachers, youshould be very proud and

take a well deserved bow.I always love an under-

dog and that is why I haveso much respect for whatBear Lake does every yearat the Science Olympiad.Next to Manistee Catholicthey are the smallest schoolcompeting, and unlikemany of their competitorsthey don’t have the ben-efit of lots of specializedcoaches. It is often strictly the kids’ own efforts like itshould be in a competitionof this nature, so coachesLori Mullet and BarbaraMansfield should be very proud of their kids’ perfor-mance.

It is a job well done by everyone.

It also gives us reason tosmile in knowing the kidsof this county are getting

a first-rate education thatwill allow them to succeed.

Manistee County ScienceOlympians make us all proud
