The difference betweensucceeding and failing inlife is not giving up until thegoal is met.
Jacque Peterson is oneof those people who will gothe extra yard to succeed atwhatever she attempts to
do. Peterson was featuredin a Dec. 6 edition of theManistee News Advocateabout how she is servingin the Peace Corps in thenorthern Ukraine villageof Yampil. She is teachinghigh school English classesat that location as part ofher two years in the PeaceCorps.
Peterson who is thedaughter of Dr. Stephenand Cynthia Peterson andNancy Warner told in thatstory how her Peace Corpsproject was to raise fundsto purchase new Englishbooks for the students ather school. The ones theyare presently using areoutdated, and arent reallyconducive to learning thelanguage.
The Manistee native hasa goal of $4,959.18 withpart of the money cominglocally from the Ukraineand $3,679.76 they are hop-ing to get from the UnitedStates. They have raised$1,170 from the UnitedStates and combined with
the funds from the Ukraine, they were able to purchasethe first set of books.
We still need $2,509.76to come from the UnitedStates, said Peterson via ane-mail interview from theUkraine. Donations willbe accepted for the projectuntil it has become fullyfunded, so we most defi-nitely would appreciate it ifpeople would still considerdonating. All donations are
100 percent tax deduct-ible and go directly to ourproject.
Peterson said that shecant believe the differenceit is making in the class-room from the books theyhave already purchased atthis time.
All of the money raisedwill go directly towardspurchasing 207 New
Opportunities Englishtextbooks, by Pearson/Longman Publishing inEngland, said Peterson.Additionally being pur-chased will be 207 of theaccompanying student
workbooks, three audiodisc sets, 15 transla-tion dictionaries, and sixteachers books. The NewOpportunities compila-tion is considered to beamong the best for teach-
ing English as a foreignlanguage and is widely usedthroughout all of WesternEurope.
However, Peterson saidthere are other things thatmake a difference in thelearning process.
The difference betweenthe Ukranian writtenEnglish textbooks issued
by the government to
the school and the NewOpportunity textbooks wehave begun to switch to isastounding, said Peterson. Its not the glossy pagesor up-to-date pictures thatmake the books fantastic, its the content. The layoutof the material is so muchsimpler for the students,
beginning with a clearpresentation of the new
Jacque Peterson is shown awaiting to ride on a trainat the station. Her primary type of transportation inthe Ukraine is by train, bus or on foot.

To attend college, moststudents must pass a veryrigorous test finding themoney to pay for educa-tion. Finding that money isharder every year.
With college costs risingmore quickly than medi-cal care, The Wall StreetJournal recently reportedthat 88 percent of families
are having difficulty payingfor college.
In the past, collegetuition was paid for withsavings, supplemented bygovernment or bank loans.Today, its usually savings, spending from currentincome and borrowing.
Last year, 10 millionfamilies took out collegeloans loans that are notdischarged in bankruptcy, said Justin Draeger,
National Association ofStudent Financial Aid
Administrators.Because it costs so
much to go to college, themajority of students leave
with more than $23,000 indebt. Starting salaries formost college graduates are$17,000, says Fox News.
Although fewer grantsand loans will be given tostudents this year, thereare still financial resources
available if you know whereto look for them.
There are billions ofhigher education dollarsthat annually go unused
because people just do notknow about the money,
where it is and how to getit, said Idalah D. Womack,MSW, LCSW, author of1 True College MoneySince 1978, sixth edition(Infinity Publishing).
Womack was the firstperson in her family to goto college. She was inspiredto write the book becauseof her own experiencestrying to get financial aid,and the current sixth edi-tion contains more than 30
years of her research com-bined with college studentsexperiences.
Womack offers a few of
her tips to get started:nTake a pen, paper
and quarters to a library.Be prepared to gather/copy
a large amount of informa-tion.nGo to the reference
desk of your local public, high school, college or col-lege departmental libraries.
Ask for books about schol-arships, fellowships andinternships that pay for
higher education.nGrants originate from
business, government,private and/or foundation
sources. Successful andwealthy graduates oftendonate money in an effortto give back and help otherstudents. Many of thesegrants can be found incollege catalogs.
nWhile you are await-ing applications for finan-
cial help, start looking for acollege.
nContact theContinuing Education
Department at colleges andrequest information abouttheir services, work-studygrants and cooperativeeducation programs.

vocabulary which then leads into practiceexercises in which they are using, listening, reading, understanding, and assimilatingthat new vocabulary.
More importantly its useful vocabularythat they would need in traveling or work-ing with the English language. I cannot tell
you how often and how much time Ive hadto spend going through their current booksand weeding out the words/phrases I,as a native English speaker, have nevereven heard of, from the vocabulary that isgiven.
What they are working on now is focus-ing in more on the younger children tomake sure they have books available tothem to utilize for their studies. It is some-thing she said that is sorely lacking at thistime.
With the money we raised through theChristmas Fundraising, we purchased asmany as we could afford pre-intermediate
books for the tenth graders, said Peterson.I went ahead and purchased one beginner
book too, because even though we currentlycant yet afford to get the new books for
the younger (sixth and seventh grades), the
different exercises and dialogues that are inthe book serve as a great resource for theteachers.
Peterson said if people would like todonate they can do so many different ways.
People can donate online safely andeasily, simply by going to www.peacecorps.gov/contribute, typing in Peterson intothe search box, and then clicking on theUkraine-Providing Textbooks link that isprovided.
If they would like to send a check theyshould Make check payable to: Peace CorpsPartnership Program and place in thememo section of the check: PCPP Grant #343-255 Peterson. Along with the check, donors need to print and mail in the dona-tion form that can be found in pdf form byagain going to www.peacecorps.gov/con-tribute. The address will be at that location.
Anyone wanting to donate by phonewith a credit or debit card should call PeaceCorps Headquarters in Washington (800)424-8580 ext. 2170 and have credit cardinformation ready and the Peace CorpsPartnership Grant Project Number: #343-
255.
