It boggles the mind, really. Twentytimes.
It doesnt matter what direction youbegin driving when you leave Manistee, but if you keep driving and driving anddriving and driving youd circle the
Earth 20 times before youd pull over tocatch your breath.Thats how many times Harveys Army
has driven around the world 20 times.Yes, it boggles the mind, all right. Well,
everyones mind except Harvey Showalter,himself.
Is that all, just 20 times? Showalterteasingly asked last week when he washonored with the first United VeteransCouncil of Manistee County Friends ofVeterans Award.
Just 20 times? he asked with a smileon his face and twinkle in his eyes.
Since 2006, Showalter has been theguiding force behind a program in whichveterans are driven to their medicalappointments all across the state.
Harvey has done a miraculous jobmaking arrangements to transport vet-erans to various hospitals in the State ofMichigan, said fellow veteran and long-time public servant Ervin Kowalski. Theoriginal van was acquired approximatelyfive years ago and since that time his dedi-cated drivers have transported an untold
number of veterans to the various hospi-tals in the state, traveling all four seasonsas needed.
His drivers are all certified and roadtested. They volunteer their services
whenever needed to help the veterans.Harvey has spent many hours schedulingappointments at the various hospitals andarranging for transportation to meet theirappointments.
Surprised when he was presented theaward last week before a packed houseat the first-ever Im Proud to be an
American Veterans Day Concert, heldat the Manistee High School, Showalterremained humble, shifting the spotlightfrom himself and saying, quite simply:
DAV van program director Harvey Showalter, flanked by some of his volunteerdrivers, explains the program to the audience at last weeks first-ever Im Proudto be an American Veterans Day Concert, held at the Manistee High School.
Harvey Showalter is seen with the numerous awards and certficates he hasearned for his tireless efforts to help area veterans.
HARVEYS ARMYManistee Countys DAV volunteer vanprogram is one of the best in the state

We make several trips aweek, sometimes a coupletrips a day ... Our programhas been successful becauseof our drivers, not because ofanything Ive done. Our driv-
ers are very determined tohelp our veterans.

PROGRAMS
AROUND
THE STATE
LOOK TO US
Over the years HarveysArmy of about two dozen
volunteer drivers havelogged just short of500,000 miles, with theirtwo-van fleet.
We make several tripsa week, sometimes a coupletrips a day, Showaltersaid. Maybe one van willtake off with some veter-ans south, say to Flint orSaginaw or Detroit, whilethe other might go north toTraverse City.
Our program has beensuccessful because of ourdrivers, not because of any-thing Ive done. Our drivers
are very determined to helpour veterans.
Another longtime vol-unteer driver and veteran,Roger Hilliard, said he haslooked forward to meetingthe many veterans when-ever he drives them to theirmedical appointments.
Its been my pleasureto work with the DAV, notonly handling ManisteeCounty veterans, but veter-ans in other counties, too,Hilliard said. The healthand care of these veteransusing this program has
given me great satisfac-tion and pride to be able toserve them.
The countless hoursdonated by volunteers havegiven hundreds of veteransthe ability to keep the doc-tor appointments. Underthe leadership of HarveyShowalter, we have receivednational recognition, plusgreat local support.
National recognition?Consider this: President
Barack Obama, himself, sent a gift to Showalter inappreciation for the stan-
dard of success set by theManistee-based program.More on that in just a min-ute.
One thing people hateto give up is their inde-pendence, said veteranand volunteer droier KeithGraham, who also servesas commander of theUnited Veterans Council ofManistee County. Drivingis such an example. Manyseniors hate to give up theindependence of transpor-tation.
We have an ever-increasing number of vet-erans who need treatmentand who are either up in
years, or unable to drive.Disabled vets also requirespecial set-ups in vehicles, and many cannot affordthis option. Some cannothandle the stress of travel-ing, or because of theirtreatments, cannot drive
back home. Some cannotafford public transporta-tion.
In comes the DAV vanprogram, Graham said,
all handled by volunteers, all taking veterans to treat-ment facilities within thestate. Veterans who oftenhad to wait for treatmentcan now receive it and be
back home in the same day. These men and women whofurnish this service cer-tainly deserve our gratitudeand thanks.
Kowalkski said he hasbeen amazed how much the

Manistee DAV van programhas grown over the years.
Other programs aroundthe state look to us to seehow its done how itsdown right, Kowalkskisaid. We probably have thevery best program in thewhole state.
Harvey has worked
very hard to keep the vansin good working order andreplace them as needed, when they get too manymiles and are no longerdependable. He, with thecooperation of other vet-erans organizations, hasraised much money tomaintain reliable equip-ment in the process.
GIFT
FROM THE
PRESIDENTHarveys wristwatch
tells him much more thanthe time of day.
It also tells him thatothers are appreciativelyand acutely aware of all hehas done in support of thiscountrys military veterans.
Thank you for yourdevotion to service and fordoing all you can to shapea better tomorrow for ourgreat nation, PresidentObama wrote in a letter
to Showalter. Thank youfor helping to address themost pressing needs inyour community and ourcountry.
A letter from DisabledAmerican VeteransNational Director ofVoluntary (DAV) ServicesMichael J. Walsh wasenclosed with the specially-engraved wristwatch, givento Showalter for donatingmore than 10,000 hoursto patients of the VeteransAdministration.
In my view, this is
more than a nice watch,Walsh wrote in his letter ofappreciation to Showalter, who lives in Manistee. Itsmore than simply recogniz-ing you as one of those fewwho have been incrediblygenerous in giving of them-selves and their time.
To me, this watch is amark of distinction that sets
you apart as an example ofthe exceptional compassionthat rests at the very heartof the DAV mission. Thank
you for everything youvedone to make life better forthe men and women who
use the medical system. Our whole society is better
because of the gift of yourkindness.
Once again, Showalterwas quick to share thepraise with his army of
drivers.The drivers are the
ones who deserve the rec-ognition, Showalter said.Theyre the ones who
