AFL SCHOOL OF EXCELLENCE The AFL School of Excellence provides students with the opportunity to gain practical experience in AFL and develop the fundamental skills of the game which can also translate into other direct contact sports. Students will have access to recognised accredited AFL coaches and teachers who will also provide feedback and insight to developing the ability of each and every participant. The program will offer opportunities for students to participate in competitions throughout the local area and region. Students within the program will receive first choice in sporting teams playing in key competitions (such as AFLQ Schools Cup & SOE Championships) and be provided with opportunities to be scouted by AFL feeder clubs, regional and state representatives. The program is designed for students from Years Seven to Ten and is undertaken as one of the subjects students participate in whilst completing their Secondary schooling. The opportunity for students within years seven to Ten is to provide pathways for further study and opportunity to expand the essential skills of the game. Quality outcomes of the program will be maintained by the highly qualified staff within the school and special guest coaches from AFL Queensland and local clubs within the area. The aim is to provide students who have identified AFL talent with an opportunity to develop their skills and provide a genuine learning pathway in AFL and sports studies through senior schooling and beyond. DRAMA Drama students at Woodcrest State College develop knowledge, understanding and skill in areas such as scriptwriting, directing, sound and lighting operation and of course acting. Studying Drama enhances students’ artistic and creative abilities and builds problem solving skills, giving them a better understanding of themselves, their world and the world around them.

Drama is delivered as a Senior General subject in Years Eleven and Twelve and as an elective in Year Ten. For all other students, we deliver a weekly Drama Club where students develop and enhance their verbal and non-verbal communication skills, building confidence, resilience, personal and professional skills thus creating students who can think critically and creatively, to be future problem solvers.

DANCE At Woodcrest State College, Dance is delivered as both a Junior Secondary subject elective in Years Nine and Ten and an extra-curricular activity – CREST CREW for Secondary students. The study of Dance at Woodcrest State College involves learning set choreography and creating new choreography as well as responding Dance in the world around us. Woodcrest State College creates students who, through studying Dance, better interpret non-verbal communications and are able to respond creatively and constructively to the solving of problems. These students utilise both their inter and intra personal skills, in order to create meaning in new work, therefore effectively communicating with an audience. Students utilise a number of performance opportunities throughout the year, including Eisteddfods and our end of semester Arts Showcases.

POSSUMS PLAYGROUP Little Possums Playgroup is held on Monday mornings in the Primary School precinct - with Session #1 from 9:00 – 10:30am and Session #2 from 11:00 to 12:30pm. Each week we welcome children, ranging in age from birth to 4 years, along with their parent/s or carers. This is a great opportunity for all involved to make new friends, listen to a story, sing songs, do some craft activities and share morning tea. As we continue to build strong ties with the community, we hope this program will provide parents with greater confidence and connection to our College, thus providing a smooth transition into formal schooling.

POSSUMS READING TIME You are never too young to start enjoying books! One of our key priorities as a school is to instil a love of reading in our students from a very young age. Every Friday from 9:00am, during our Little Possums Reading Time, little kiddies aged from 0 to 5 years and their parents come to our Primary School Resource Centre to listen and engage in story telling time. Story time develops not only a love of books and reading at an early age, but also develops social, literacy and pre-reading skills.

POSSUMS PRE-PREP PROGRAM

At Woodcrest State College we recognise the importance of early learning and of smooth and

settled transitions into formal schooling. To ensure a successful and stress-free beginning to each

child’s Prep year, it is important that the child, parents and school are ready for this major step in a

child’s life. To foster this student readiness (and parents’!) Woodcrest State College offers a series

of Pre-Prep Transition programs in Semester Two, for all children eligible to enrol in Prep the

following year. This program is based upon community needs and engages students in classroom

procedures, routines and activities which build relationships and a sense of belonging to our school.

While children are participating in morning circles and a range of fun literacy-based activities in a

Prep classroom and playground, parents/carers are invited to our Primary staffroom to hear from

Early Years staff and quest speakers on a range of topics including literacy, numeracy, social skills

and health and wellbeing.

In 2020, parents/carers will be asked to sign up for one of four Pre-Prep programs on offer in

Semester 2. This will be done as part of our enrolment process early in the year. For those families

unable to attend Pre-Prep, an interview will be organised later in the year so that Early Years staff

have an opportunity to meet parents and children prior to school commencement. If you have any

questions relating specifically to our Little Possums program, please email us at

GRIT Our Secondary School Community has identified the following 4 values which guide students path at Woodcrest State College.

GRATITUDE when you are grateful, fear disappears and abundance appears.

RESPECT respect means you care enough about others to think about others feelings before you act.

INTEGRITY doing what is right even when it is difficult.

TENACITY never, never, never give up!

G.R.I.T. Our framework was developed after listening to our community and to the core values our students believed were important in today’s world. Recently the school has embraced learnings from Martin Seligman’s work around Positive Psychology. Seligman explained that an outwardly focused life has the potential to be more purposeful and more fulfilling. Seligman reasoned that aspects such as optimism, gratitude, resilience and Tenacity can be deliberately learned and enhanced. From these influences, the G.R.I.T. core values were designed to inspire students to develop their social-emotional capabilities and skills. High social-emotional capabilities are linked with improved academic success and are highly valued in today’s workforce. At Woodcrest State College our G.R.I.T. values are explicitly taught to students in classes, and enhanced through involvement in extra-curricular activities and camps.

JUNIOR SECONDARY The Junior Secondary program at Woodcrest State College is designed around the cognitive, physical, social and emotional needs of students in adolescence. In order to ensure that every student succeeds in Junior Secondary the College has the following commitments into place: Fewer teachers per class groupings and smaller class sizes

to ensure that positive teacher-student relationships are developed and students are supported in their transition to Secondary School

An unrelenting focus on literacy and numeracy A strong emphasis on quality teaching and curriculum

design to ensure that every student is supported, engaged and challenged in their learning

Rotational activities to engage students in a variety of elective subjects, so students can make informed decisions about the subjects they choose to study in Senior

One teacher who knows the student as a person and a learner who mentors the student and connects with them every day

Relevant and responsive life skills and values education A strong focus on parental involvement through regular

formal and informal interactions. These commitments and the support that the school offers our students, ensures that every child transitions into the Senior years with the skills necessary for success.

Page 24: Welcome to Woodcrest State College

SENIOR SECONDARY Senior Secondary caters for students in the final phase of their education and is focused upon students choosing a pathway which will allow them to exit school with qualifications that will set themselves up for their preferred future. Year Ten students are in the compulsory education stage where they remain until they turn 16 years of age or finish Year Ten. This is followed by the compulsory participation stage beyond year Ten where students are required to participate in education and training for a further two years or until they have gained a Queensland Certificate of Education; or they have gained a Certificate III vocational qualification; or they turn 17. Alternatively, after completing their compulsory schooling, young people are able to enter the workforce, as long as they are in paid work for at least 25 hours a week. The preferred outcome is that all students elect to remain at school to complete Year Twelve. At Woodcrest State College, we offer quality educational programs which allow an integrated three year course of study for students in the senior phase of their education, offering students a rich array of pathways to qualify for their Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) upon exit from Year Twelve. In the foundation stage Year Ten, we build on a rich and challenging Senior Secondary curriculum to provide students with a firm foundation before progression to senior Years Eleven and Twelve subjects and vocational programs which is underpinned by the Australian Curriculum. In Year Ten, students will begin the process of identifying their pathway and completing Senior Education and Training (SET) Plan. During their journey to completion of year Twelve, they will regularly reflect upon their progress and review and revise their SET plan as their needs change. The Years Eleven and Twelve curriculum program is geared towards students choosing either a Tertiary or Vocational pathway which will lead them to their chosen career. Within each pathway, students will choose from General subjects, Applied subjects, school based VET certificates, VET certificates delivered by TAFE or other external registered training organisations or engagement in school based apprenticeships or traineeships. Students are supported on an individual basis. They choose an educational program which will enable them to attain a QCE upon completion of year Twelve. In addition, many students will exit with an ATAR and/or nationally recognised vocational certificates.

ATAR What is an Australian Tertiary Admission Rank? From 2020, the Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) will replace the Overall Position (OP) as the standard pathway to tertiary study for Year Twelve students in Queensland. An Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) allows tertiary admissions centres to compare students from across Australia when they apply for tertiary places. The ATAR is a number between 0 and 99.95, in increments of 0.05. In Queensland, students who complete Year Twelve may apply for tertiary entrance using multiple pathways. How are ATARs calculated? The ATAR is calculated in Queensland using the same underlying fine-grained measure as the OP, but segmented in a different way. An ATAR is a percentile ranking of a student’s overall achievement out of all potential Year Twelve school students. This group includes ATAR-eligible and ineligible students, as well as those people not in senior schooling. All potential Year Twelve students are used due to the fact that each state and territory calculates their local tertiary rank differently. Additionally, the various states and territories have different proportions of the population participating in senior schooling. By calculating ATARs using the whole possible Year Twelve cohort as a base, ATARs from different jurisdictions can be compared. The ATAR at Woodcrest State College Students who show a commitment and work ethic to their academic studies will be suited to an ATAR pathway. Woodcrest State College works in conjunction with Year Ten students to align senior subjects that contribute to an ATAR pathway. The General subjects we offer that contribute directly to an ATAR pathway are:

Page 26: Welcome to Woodcrest State College

ACADEMIC COACHING Academic coaching helps students chart a path to goal attainment and learn how to follow through with goals and get results. The academic coaching model at Woodcrest State College is a proactive and systematic approach to supporting ATAR students in their senior academic program. It is designed to assist students in identifying and achieving their academic goals, and to motivate them to achieve and strive for excellence. Every ATAR student in year Twelve is assigned an Academic Coach to monitor and support their academic progress through their final year of school. The aims of the Academic Coaching Model at Woodcrest State College are: To build student confidence and a positive attitude towards learning

and learning goals. To monitor and support student progress throughout their senior

studies. To provide students with informative data to assist them in achieving

their academic goals. To work closely with students, keeping academic achievement in

perspective and assisting them where necessary to discover different solutions to achieving their desired academic goals.

To motivate and engage students in a process which maximises their potential so that they achieve the best possible academic outcomes.

Page 27: Welcome to Woodcrest State College

their capacity for future employment. Other private Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) and government providers such as DET (e.g. Transition to Work programs ) who provide further

valuable industry training and links to advance student opportunities Promotes opportunities for school-based traineeships and apprenticeships: offer opportunities for students still at school in Years Ten to Twelve to work in paid employment for an employer while they are undertaking a nationally

recognised vocational education and training (VET) qualification. University of Southern Queensland (USQ) partnerships with a year Nine to Twelve student choices program. Encourages meaningful work experience opportunities: students undertake work placement to gain valuable industry experience and knowledge in areas of their choice, whether a student’s goal is university

WHAT IS WOODCREST STATE COLLEGE P&C ASSOCIATION? Here at Woodcrest State College, we are very fortunate to have such a strong sense of community. Woodcrest State College P&C Association is about people – people just like you – parents, care givers and community-minded people who want to help their College by building a stronger school community, where all students benefit. The P&C operate 3 businesses. The P&C Association took over the Primary Tuckshop in 2018, known as the Tuckerbox Tuckshop, for the convenience of school families and to raise additional funds to enhance opportunities and resources for our students. The Tuckerbox Tuckshop was named by one of our wonderful Prep classes as part of a competition last year. We are always looking for volunteers and it’s a great way to meet other parents in our College community over a cuppa – and lunch is on us! In May 2018, we opened our Outside School Hours Care (OSHC) service. We have a wonderful team, and offer competitive rates with the convenience of a school-based service making drop-off and pick-up a breeze. The service is open from 6.30am and closes at 6.30pm, the OSHC is located in the Campus Staffroom across from the Secondary Resource Centre. In 2019, the P&C Association also took over the Secondary Campus Canteen which is proving to be another successful business. All 3 of the P&C businesses are managed by our onsite Business Operations Manager and overseen by the Executive Committee in conjunction with the Executive Principal. WHY JOIN THE P&C? Actions always speak louder than words when it comes to valuing your child’s learning. Joining the P&C is one of the best ways to show your students how much you value their education and how interested you are in what they do. By joining the P&C you are showing your students how committed you are to helping students and your school community. A lot can and has been achieved through the P&C and the College working together toward common goals. To continue the great work, the P&C need people from all walks of life and with a range of talents who are committed to delivering great outcomes for our students and College. Everybody has a role to play and your ideas will be heard. The more people who are involved, the more exciting and successful it will be.
