From the Desk of the Deacon

“THIS IS WHAT YOUR GOD ASKS OF YOU, ONLY THIS: TO ACT JUSTLY, LOVE TENDERLY AND WALK HUMBLY WITH YOUR GOD.” Micah 6:8 My brothers and sisters, on this celebration of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist I begin with my favorite scripture passage from Micah. The reason being, I consider John to be the personification of these virtues: justice, love and humility. We know that John understood and embraced humility in his own words when he said, “What do you suppose that I am? I am not he. Behold, one is coming after me; I am not worthy to unfasten the sandals of his feet.” Humility is understanding one’s place before God. It is knowing and embracing that He is God and I am not. Humility is not, however, self-deprecation. John also knew, as is stated in Psalm 139, “Truly you have formed my inmost being; you knit me in my mother’s womb. I give you thanks that I am fearfully, wonderfully made; wonderful are your works.” John knew that a humble, loving heart is necessary to act justly with all people and to give all glory and honor to the Father. In the passage from Acts we read, “John heralded his coming by pro-claiming a baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel.” What is this baptism of repentance? We often equate repentance with simply being sorry for something, but in this case it is an inadequate translation of the Greek word metanoia, which describes a change of mind and heart and attitude demanded by personal conversion which is what John preached. We turn more toward God and away from evil every day of our lives, always thanking Him, giving Him all the praise, glory, and hon-or. John’s story is remarkable. In today’s Gospel we read that John’s par-ents, Zechariah and Elizabeth, were obedient to the Lord when they said, “John is his name.” The people of the hill country of Judea who heard the stories about John heard these things, took them to heart, saying, ”What, then, will this child be?” For surely the hand of the Lord was with him. John is for us what he always desired to be, less, so that Jesus would be more. His idea of success is that we, along with he, would bend the knee, the heart, and the mind before our Savior. Wouldn’t you love to untie the sandals of His feet. My sisters and brothers, Jesus loves you; I love you; love one another!

A Reflection for the Nativity of John the Bap-tist—Take some time to read and reflect on Psalm 139. God, who created us, knows us completely. No one knows our strengths and weaknesses, our hopes and struggles as well as God. Even at our worst moments, God is with us and loving us. We have been given the Holy Spirit to help us in our journey through this life. Our real challenge is to learn to listen to the promptings of the Spirit and follow them.

“O Lord, you have probed me, and you know me.”
