WELCOME TO THE 2021 MERRIMACK COUNTY LOCAL FOOD GUIDE!

The Merrimack County Local Food Guide is a free publication designed to make it easier for consumers to support local agriculture by purchasing products grown by farmers right here in our county!

Merrimack County farmers are a very important part of our environment and our local economy. These are the days when the hard work of Mer-rimack County farmers comes to fruition. Farmers and conservationists have worked hard to create the thriving agricultural system that we have today. When farmers aren’t cultivating or harvesting their crops, they’re contributing to the local food movement through farmers’ markets and community building events like NH Maple Weekend and Old Home Day celebrations.

Merrimack County is lucky to have such a diverse agricultural commu-nity, from backyard farmers selling vegetables and fresh eggs roadside, to larger productions that supply products like fermented vegetables, leg of lamb or 100% grass-fed beef to local stores, restaurants, and farmers’ markets.

As a “thank you” for all of the hard work that so many people put into the local food movement in New Hampshire, Merrimack County Conservation District is proud to present the 11th annual Local Food Guide in an effort to educate the public about the availability of our local bounty.

Our town-by-town farm list will help you find the farms and farmers’ markets in your area!

We encourage you to safely meet local farmers on their farms or at farmers’ markets. Challenge yourself by trying new foods or venture out of the box and visit a new farm! But please keep your safety and the safety of others in mind!

Merrimack County has a strong agricultural community to be cherished. Plus, don’t forget to thank our advertisers for their support of the Local Food Guide; this would not be possible without them.

When you buy local food, you aren’t just making a simple purchase. You are supporting a way of life that embraces a stronger environment for fu-ture generations. You are helping your local economy and helping family farms to thrive.

We look forward to seeing you at the farms and markets!

Merrimack County Conservation DistrictCelebrates 75 Years of Service!

A Little History....In 1929, as a result of devastating soil erosion, US

Congress appropriated $160,000 for soil erosion control experiments. From that early research, the USDA Natural

Resources Conservation Service (NRCS, formerly Soil Conservation Service) was formed. County conservation districts were established by NH RSA 432 to set local priorities, deliver information and assistance to land owners and users. Merrimack County Conservation

District was formed January 24, 1946. County conservation districts work in partnership with NRCS to provide technical assistance for federally funded

programs. MCCD meets with other related agencies and members of the public several times each year to form a Local Work Group, which determines local natural

resource needs and concerns, and carries those concerns forward to the State Technical Committee.

The goal of Merrimack County Conservation District has always been to serve our community members in the most effective way(s) possible, from School to Farm Days and participation in NH Gleans, to Soil

Health Educational Workshops and conservation grant applications for farmers/landowners. We are proud of the work we’ve done, and we’re excited to see what the next

75 years hold!

The Guide

We are honored to announce that the 2020 Merrimack County Local Food

Guide won the PINE Award of Excellence for Environmentally Sound

Materials in Printing! This award was earned because of our partnership

with Echo Communications, Inc. in New London, NH. Thank you to Echo

Communications for helping us to create this beautiful guide using soy based

ink on 100% post-consumer recycled paper.

This year’s guide displays the same ink on the same kind of paper, and

a cover designed by an artist in Merrimack County. We are lucky to have

the opportunity to support as many local businesses as possible with this

publication.

Food For ThoughtMerrimack County Conservation District is proud to have partnered with several elementary schools and community based educational institutions to grow vegetables for food insecure children thoughout Merrimack County. With the help of LaValley Farms in Hooksett, we have helped children plant, maintain and harvest from raised vegetable beds that we were able to build with grant funds from the NH Children’s Health Fundation. The little hands that help with the gardens will also take the nutritious vegetables home to their food insecure families. These kids get to feel a sense of accomplishment as they nurish their bodies with vegetables that they helped grow. No child should experience food insecurity, and we have worked hard to protect these learning minds from hungry bellies. In 2020 we were able to harvest over 300 pounds from vegetable beds at schools and community institutions. All of which went home with food insecure children.

The COVID-19 pandemic brought food insecurity to the forefront of many lives. Children were not spared from this chronic issue. With schools working remotely, many families struggled to put food on the table. Merrimack County Conservation District worked dilligently with local farmers and backyard gardeners to collect their surplus produce and distribute it to backpack programs, soup kitchens, and food pantries throughout our county.
