2018-19 MERRIMACK COLLEGE MEN’S ICE HOCKEY

THE OPPONENTEYES ON THE EAGLES »Boston College has had a rough go of it to start the season, losing each of its first four games while being outscored by 13 goals during that span (18-5). »The usually potent Eagle offense has mustered only five goals in four games (1.25/gm) and has been shut out three times. »Junior David Cotton is the lead scorer for the Eagles with four points on three goals and an assist. He recorded all of those points in one game, however. »Four other Eagles hare recorded two assists and rank second in overall scoring with two points, while junior Graham McPhee and freshman Oliver Wahlstrom have one goal apiece. »Junior Joseph Woll has started all four games in net; he'll look to build on his 3.72 GAA and .867 save percentage. »The Eagles rank 56th in scoring offense (1.25) and 53rd in scoring defense (4.50), as well as 42nd on the power play (15.4) and 21st on the penalty kill (84.6).

INSIDE THE SERIES »Boston College has controlled the all-time series, as Merrimack is 22-70-7 all-time against the Eagles. »The ledger is slightly better on home ice, where the Warriors have gone 13-25-5, it is at Kelley Rink where they have truly struggled with only nine wins in 53 tries (9-42-2). »Merrimack's last win in the series actually was on the road, a 6-3 win on Feb. 10, 2017. But the Eagles won all four games last year, including a Hockey East Quarterfinals sweep at BC. »Merrimack's last home win was on Feb. 15, 2013 (3-2/OT).

BEST AGAINST THE EAGLES »Junior Sami Tavernier is the best of the bunch in terms of all-time success against the Eagles. In six career games, he has five points on the strength of two goals and three assists. »Four other Warriors have recorded three points in their careers against BC, as well. They are senior Alex Carle (3a), junior Johnathan Kovacevic (1g, 2a), junior Logan Coomes (1g, 2a) and senior Michael Babcock (1g, 2a). »While his numbers are fantastic in four career starts against BC, senior Craig Pantano will be looking to pick up his first win if he plays them. He is 0-4-0 with a 2.12 GAA and .913 SV%.

LAST TIME OUT »Boston College won all four games last year, winning two tight games in early November in the regular season series before sweeping the Warriors in the Hockey East Tournament Quarterfinals by scores of 1-0 and 4-3 (overtime).

State, Penn State, Notre Dame).

LEADING THE PACK »Two juniors lead Merrimack in scoring so far, as Tyler Irvine (2g, 4a) and Logan Coomes (1g, 4a) have six and five points. »Each ranks in the top-16 in Hockey East in overall scoring, as well as tied for fifth with four power play points. »Another junior, Patrick Kramer, paces the team in goal-scoring with three after going off for a pair last Saturday night.

UPS AND DOWNS »Merrimack exploded for four goals in the season opener, but then scored no more than two goals in its next three games. »The Warriors then went off for four against BU last Saturday, but then were held to one goal at UMass Friday before lighting the lamp three more times the following night in a loss.

THE REPLACEMENTS »Merrimack lost four of its top five scorers from last year, bring-ing back just one 20-point scorer from the returners. »Altogether, the Warriors return 42.9 percent of the total offense from last year's team.

SHOTS, SHOTS, SHOTS »The Warriors have averaged 28.00 shots per game so far, a fig-ure that ranks 34th nationally. »Merrimack's high water mark for total shots in a single game was 32 in the season opener; they scored four goals that night. »Freshman Chase Gresock is one of three Warriors among the league leaders in shots on goal, pacing the conference with 25.

PRETTY POWERFUL »Merrimack's power play was among the best in the nation for much of last year, reaching as high as eighth in the national ledger before ultimately finishing ranked 30th at 18.8 percent. »Merrimack's power play has converted 16.2 percent of its opportunities thus far, with at least goal in four of seven games. They have scored two power play goals in two games.

NOTES & NOTABLESTERRIBLE TWOS »Merrimack is 0-3-0 in the second of back-to-back games this season. »The Warriors are also 0-3-0 when trailing after two periods, and 0-2-0 when tied after two periods so far this season. »Merrimack is also just 1-5-0 when holding opponents to 29 shots or less.

YOU WOULDN'T THINK IT WOULD BE THE CASE... » ...but Merrimack has outshot its opponent in five out of seven games and is winless in every single one of those games. »Meanwhile, on the flip side, the Warriors' only two wins have been when they have been outshot by the opposition.

SLOW STARTS »Merrimack is winless so far this season when allowing the first goal, owning an 0-3-0 record in those scenarios. »The Warriors are also yet to win a game when either trailing or tied after both the first period (0-2-0/0-3-0) and the second period (0-3-0/0-2-0). »Since the start of 2014-15, the Warriors have conceded the game’s first goal in 92 games and have just 16 wins in those games (16-65-11, .233%).

AGAINST THE LEAGUE »Merrimack went 10-16-2 against league teams and was outscored by a 78-59 margin (-19). Merrimack won just two regular season series (UConn, UNH). »The Warriors are 1-2-0 with a -1 goal margin so far in 2018-19.

THREE OR NOTHING »So far in 2018-19, the Warriors are 1-2-0 when scoring three-plus goals and 1-3-0 when being held to two goals or fewer. »Since 2014-15, Merrimack is 47-8-8 (.810) when scoring 3+ goals, compared to 11-71-13 (.184) when scoring two or less.

THERE'S NO PLACE LIKE HOME »Merrimack finished 6-7-2 at Lawler Rink last season (.467). »The Warriors have posted a winning record there in eight of the last 11 years. »The team has just one won in four tries at Lawler so far this year (1-3-0).

ROAD WOES »Merrimack was just 6-14-2 away from Lawler Rink last year, which actually represented its best road record since a 6-13-1 mark in 2014-15. »Merrimack's last season with a winning road record was in 2011-12 (8-7-3). »The Warriors are 1-2-0 on the road so far this season.

A SURE THING »Since the 2014-15 season, Merrimack is 42-0-8 when holding a lead after two periods of play, including 1-0-0 in 2018-19. »The last time the team squandered a two-period lead and lost was on Nov. 30, 2013, at Yale; in that game, Merrimack had a 1-0 lead after 40 minutes before falling in overtime, 3-2.

IRON WARRIORS »Rising senior Michael Babcock represents the Warriors' iron man, leading all players with 118 appearances over his career.

NEVER HAVE I EVER »Merrimack has played all but two of the 60 DI schools in the country. »The two schools Merrimack has never faced are Mich. Tech and Penn State.

IT'S IN YOUR BLOOD »Senior Alex Carle's brother, Matt Carle, played 12 seasons with four different NHL franchises before retiring in 2016. »And interestingly enough, Alex's other brother -- David -- took over the reigns at the University of Denver during the offseason. The two brothers will go head-to-head when the Pioneers come to Lawler in late December.

2018-19 MERRIMACK COLLEGE MEN’S ICE HOCKEY

Scott Borek was named the eighth head coach of the men’s ice hockey program in April of 2018. Borek arrived in North Andover with 33 years of collegiate coaching experience, including eight as a head coach.

Borek has spent the last 16 years as a Hockey East associate head coach, qualifying for the NCAA Tournament 13 times, while capturing five Hockey East regular season championships and one tournament championship. Over that time span, he has recruited 12 All-Americans, 16 student-athletes who played in the NHL and 18 Hockey East All-Conference honorees.

Serving as the associate head coach at Providence since 2015, Borek’s responsibilities included oversight of recruiting, team defense and the penalty kill. This season, the Friars’ defense was second in Hockey East and seventh nationally, while the penalty kill also was second in the league and sixth nationally. Providence advanced to the NCAA Tournament in all three seasons with Borek on the coaching staff.

Before Providence, Borek spent 13 seasons as the associate head coach at the University of New Hampshire. Serving as the recruiting coordinator while overseeing the team’s forwards and power play units, Borek helped guide the Wildcats to nine NCAA Tournament appearances, a trip to the 2003 Frozen Four NCAA Championship game, one Hockey East Tournament title, and four Hockey East Tournament Championship game appearances.

Prior to joining Dick Umile’s staff at UNH, Borek was the head coach at New England College in 2001-02. He also spent five seasons as the head coach of Lake Superior State from 1996-01, following a one-year stint there as Associate Head Coach under current Notre Dame head coach Jeff Jackson. As the Lakers’ head coach, he was named the CCHA Coach of the Year in 2000 and was a Spencer Penrose Award Finalist, given to the Division I National Coach of the Year. Before Lake Superior State, Borek was also the head coach at Colby College from 1993-96 and was a finalist for the Division III Coach of the Year award in 1994.

Borek’s coaching career began as a student assistant at Dartmouth College, after he sustained a career-ending neck injury during his sophomore campaign. He graduated from Dartmouth in 1985 with a B.A. in English and was immediately named an assistant coach for the Big Green.

Borek is married to the former Jill McCune. Together they have seven children, including Madeline Borek Harris (23), who along with her husband Caleb Harris live in Pennsylvania, Charley who is a sophomore at Tufts University, and Owen who is a senior at Brooks School in North Andover. Borek’s son Gordie tragically passed in 2016 at the age of 22, as a sophomore at the University of New Hampshire. Jack, Jacob and Emma are age 15 and presently entering 9th grade at Triton School in Newbury, Massachusetts.
