Since 1922, Episcopalians have supported the ministries of the Episcopal Church in Jerusalem and the Middle East through the Good Friday Offering. It is vital that we continue to share in this burden, and not let our brothers and sisters in Jerusalem carry the cross alone.

The offering today will be sent to the church in Jerusalem

The prayers for this service, with some adaptations, have come from the Way of the Cross service at St. George’s College in Jerusalem. We pray them today in communion with Christians around the world.

IJESUS IS JUDGED

Officiant We love you, Christ, and we thank you:People because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.

Station Pilate, the Roman ruler, said to Jesus: “Are you a King?” “My kingdom is not of this world,” he answered. To the people of Jerusalem Pilate said: “What shall I do with your King?” “Crucify him,” they said, “We have no king but Caesar.” So Pilate gave orders for him to be crucified.

Prayer Lord Jesus, our world is full of words like those words: “Crucify him.” Crucifixion is a most clever and cruel way to kill. Holy God, are we as bad as all that? What does it mean when people use religion and beliefs to kill?

A Meditation Ron Hodges

A period of silence will be kept.

Officiant Let us pray.Prayers are offered.

Officiant Lord have mercy:People Christ have mercy.Officiant Condemned Lord Jesus, draw us closer to you in your passion, that we

may walk the way of your cross in love, trusting only in your mercy. Amen.

IIJESUS RECEIVES HIS CROSS

Officiant We love you, Christ, and we thank you:People because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.

StationThe soldiers, who had beaten Jesus, made him carry a huge cross through the streets, the crowds laughed at him, they kicked, pushed and insulted him.

PrayerLord Jesus, your own people hated you that day. Your own city, Jerusalem, chosen by God for centuries, rejected you, hated you - that was the worst hurt - the hate! I must carry my cross, but it is nothing compared to yours, and when I see the poor, the lame, the sick, mine looks very, very small. Give me a light heart to turn my troubles into joy, to be like you in little things.

IIIJESUS FALLS

Officiant We love you, Christ, and we thank you:People because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.

StationHe came to a bend in the road, and fell in the dirt: The cross fell on top of him, so they kicked him. He got up shattered with weariness, and loneliness. A week ago, they had called him “Son of David,” welcoming him as a Messiah: now they cursed him and humiliated him.

PrayerLord Jesus, this was the first fall. You could not manage by yourself. The shock and the shame of fall and failure - I know it, and try to hide it. In some way you fall in me when I fall. The harder we fall, the harder to rise. Help me, by your power and example, to keep going, and help the world to rise up into a better world for all.

IVSIMON HELPS JESUS

Officiant We love you, Christ, and we thank you:People because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.

StationSimon was a countryman from North Africa, and the soldiers knew it: They grabbed him and made him join Jesus, “Carry that cross - this man will never make it, on his own.” The long climb began up the hill, Simon helping Jesus.

PrayerWe thank you God that one was found to help your son, even by force. So great was the weight of the world, that even Jesus could not do it alone. Our work on earth is to help you bring the heavy world to its senses. Can we put joy even into our sorrow, because you help us carry our cross?

Officiant Lord have mercy:People Christ have mercy.Officiant Helpless Jesus, destroy our defenses against your love, open our eyes

to the grace of your presence, and free us for your service. Amen.

VJESUS MEETS THE WOMEN OF JERUSALEM

Officiant We love you, Christ, and we thank you:People because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.

StationAt the gate stood women, including his mother Mary, waiting to see if an Imperial pardon would come, or waiting for the miracle. It was his last chance, to show he was a king, to be true to his word. They cried as he dragged his shattered body, with his last strength through the gate, and no pardon came, no miracle happened. Then he taught them how to weep, to weep for those unwept for, for their children who would grow up to face Jerusalem’s destruction, to weep for the things of God.

PrayerLord Jesus, the world respects the strong. You respect the weak. The world honors the rich. You have always loved the poor. Am I like you? Can I learn to love as you loved? To love what you loved?

VIJESUS IS STRIPPED

Officiant We love you, Christ, and we thank you:People because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.

StationHe stood tall on top of the hill, the crowd looking up at him, as they stripped off his clothing, exposing his bleeding battered body. Once before on a mountain he had shone as the sun, with clothes as white as snow, revealing his glory to three friends. Now all saw him in his humiliation.

PrayerLord Jesus, let me not be ashamed. Inside me there is my very own self that I cannot hide from you. When all has been taken away, and I stand alone before you, let me be real, at least for you. Help me live without pretence.

A Meditation Carrie LeRoyA period of silence will be kept.

VIIJESUS IS NAILED TO THE CROSS

Officiant We love you, Christ, and we thank you:People because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.

StationThey hammered nails into the wood through his hands, they split his feet, cutting into the rough cross. Helpless, he was hoisted, a shame and a mockery. When the pain was past bearing, he must have cried in his heart for his mother. They had won. Destroyed, rejected, broken, his very person seemed to have been shattered. No one would follow his teaching, or believe anything he had said any more. His mother, Mary, with Mary Magdalene and John, stood by. “My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?”

PrayerLord Jesus, they tortured you in your body and shamed you in all that you loved, and mocked you with hate. Thus they tried to kill your message and destroy your following. In spite of all, you refused to hate your enemy. This is a great mystery and the heart of your teaching: Give us the sense to see and the will to live your mysterious, unending love.

A Meditation Gail and Jim McFallA period of silence will be kept.

Officiant Let us pray.

Prayers are offered.

Officiant Lord have mercy:People Christ have mercy.Officiant Crucified Jesus, crucify in us all that

would separate us from you, that our lives may be shaped and molded by your offering on the cross and by the demands of your love. Amen.

VIIIJESUS DIES

Officiant We love you, Christ, and we thank you:People because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.

StationThe crowd sat and watched and waited. Even the soldiers thought about miracles, when he spoke they waited, thinking he was calling the Prophet Elijah to come and rescue him. He was calling on his Father, because in death he felt alone. Suddenly he died and the crowd was seized with confusion, the sky was black, the Temple shuddered. A soldier yelled out, “This was the Son of God.”

PrayerDear Mary, the blood came from his side, and the spear was like our sins. You alone on the day knew that we are born again from his side that no one would die alone again, and that all could now live for ever. Mother us into knowing your Son.

IXJESUS IS TAKEN DOWN AND ENTOMBED

Officiant We love you, Christ, and we thank you:People because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.

StationThey took him down. As his body lay in Mary’s lap, she remembered the words of her Son, about the bread, “This is my body, broken for you,” and over the wine, “My blood shed for you.” As all mothers do when they mourn their first born, she remembered that little baby in Bethlehem and later days when, as a man, the world had followed him.

As the sun was setting over the city they folded his body in linen and hurried to the rock-hewn tomb in the garden. They marked the place, to return after the Sabbath. Soldiers nearby marked it too, to guard against his followers. His enemies marked it also because they were angry still, for he died under the sign “The King of the Jews.” Who remembered the words of heaven: “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased?”

PrayerThat night his body lay in the dark earth of the world, a seed dying, in the winter of all spirits; all those who had loved him felt emptied and exhausted, there seemed no longer any sense or purpose in anything. But at least no more harm could come to him. Give us grace Lord to wait, to be with you, when life seems pointless, and its purpose hidden.

CONCLUDING PRAYERS BEFORE THE CROSS

Officiant Savior of the world, by your cross and precious blood you have redeemed us:

People save us, and help us, we humbly beseech you, O Lord.

Officiant Let us pray. We thank you, holy God, that you have delivered us from the dominion

of sin and death and brought us into the kingdom of your Son; and we pray that, as by his death he has recalled us to life, so by his love he may raise us to eternal joys; who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

To Christ our Lord who loves us, and washed us in his own blood, and made us a kingdom of priests to serve his God, to him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.

VENERATION OF THE CROSS
