St. Mark’s Newsletter - February 2014

On July 13, 1877, the first service of record for what was later to be-come St. Mark’s Parish was con-ducted by the Rev. William Robards Wetmore, who pedaled his bicycle from Lincolnton to be here.

Early services were held in the old Academy on the north side, as well as at City Hall and the old YMCA on Main Avenue and South Street.

A church building was erected on West Long Avenue and consecrat-ed November 20, 1903, by the Rt. Rev. Junius M Horner. St. Mark’s officially became a parish in 1915 with 74 communicants.

The present location of St. Mark’s was acquired and converted in 1948 and the Parish Hall added in 1955. Upgrades with additional meeting space were done in 2005 and our playground was added in 2012.

From the DCF in place of the Rector for this month:

It has been a very difficult couple of weeks at St. Mark’s. As many of you know, our rector has been home with the flu for the past 2 weeks and continues to work at recovering from his illness. We at the church have had to scramble to cover Sunday mornings and to cancel other activities be-cause of Shawn’s illness. And yet, it has been okay.

In the Episcopal Church, we become very dependent on our clergy. These men and women with the funny collars are trained in crisis management and pastoral care and it is of-ten in those times of crisis that they serve us the best. We come to expect them to always be there when we need them and it is a shock to our systems when they aren’t available. That is what has happened over the past two weeks at St. Mark’s. Our main clergy person has been out sick and yet the parish does continue to function, thanks to the hard work and willingness to be here of our lay leadership, Dea-con Pat Cheshire, and the Rev. Houston Matthews, our re-tired clergy member. Members of both the lay-reader corps (thanks, Julia and Jeff Bozarth) and the Vestry have helped to ensure that we have had services and other activities and members of the congregation have adapted when we had to.

Many people have asked me if I was running the church, and I will admit to making some decisions along the way to be sure that certain things did happen, but I am not running it alone by any means. Dionne and Jean, along with Don Carr our Treasurer, have kept the office running smoothly and information flowing in and out. Our Senior and Junior War-dens have been in touch with Shawn and his family regularly to be sure that what is needed has been covered. Many peo-ple have provided food, prayers and other support for Shawn and his family as they have needed help. And we have all laughed over the silly things that have had to be de-cided on a day-to-day basis. Has everything been taken care of? Probably not, but we at least know that we are still here and the doors are open, making people welcome and wor-shipping God with our whole hearts. And for that we are able to say, “Thanks be to God—and get well quickly, Shawn. We do still need you.”

Worship Services With grateful hearts….

Pete, Leah and I continue to be overwhelmed with grat-itude for the many kindnesses bestowed upon us since Pete’s cancer diagnosis in late October. We have always known St. Mark’s to be full of caring people who not only practice their faith on Sundays, but live it out day

by day. That knowledge has never been more obvious to us than in the past few months and we thank God for each and every one of you who have offered a prayer or cut our grass or replaced outdoor light bulbs at the house or brought meals or even left things on our porch without our knowledge.

Pete’s illness turned our world upside down and on the dark days, we have had moments of “why us, Lord?” but they don’t last long and we know how blessed we have been and still are through the love of others. The prayers, phone calls, cards, emails, food (including the cases of Ensure, which continues to be Pete’s main source of nourishment) are so very much appreciated. Many times, nameless parishioners provided us with needed items before we even realized we had the need. I especially appreciate those of you who have transported Pete and Leah to doctor appointments so that I can continue to work.

I fully intended to write personal notes to each and every one of you who have done so much, but things have not exactly worked out that way. To all of you who have contributed in any and all ways, we thank God for your ministry to us. We are truly blessed. The Holy Spirit is alive and well at St. Mark’s.

3rd Annual Gospel Sing & Ice Cream Social

Join with the choirs from St. Mark’s, All Saints, Holy Trinity Lutheran, and Redeemer Lutheran as we sing all our favorite music at the 3rd Annual Community Gos-pel Sing. We need everyone’s voice to be part of the fun as we “rock the church”. Following the music there will be ice cream and lots of toppings to enjoy together. A contemporary worship service is offered Sat-urdays at 5:00 pm in Belmont. Based on a Rite III Eucharist model with words on a screen and contemporary music from a small band, the service is an option for those who can’t come on Sunday, as well as a different type of Epis-copal worship. Family Promise / IHN

A program to help families move into housing

Coming the week of February 16-23

St. Mark’s hosts the Family Promise group at our church the week of Febru-ary 16. We have hosted families with IHN, the interfaith housing network, for many years now. Twice a year we open our doors and our hearts to people who are working to find permanent housing for themselves and their fami-lies. Up to 4 families come and spend a week in our Sunday School rooms and use our spaces for their day-to-day needs. We offer them a safe, stable roof over their heads with breakfast and other “snack” food available, laundry facilities and showers, and a home-cooked dinner each evening. It takes a lot of people to help make this happen. Kenna Watts coordinates the week, but people are needed to get ready on the 16th, pack up on the 23rd, to do the sheets and blankets when the week is over, to provide dinners each night and to sleep at the church and provide security for the group (2 people). Men’s Spring Parks & Rec Softball League

Do the St. Mark’s men want to form a Softball Team for Parks & Rec’s Spring Industial, Church, Open League? We need at least 10 players (skill level not important!), but our roster could have as many as want to play and have fun. If you are at all interested, let Polly know by February 16 so we can send a rep to the organizational meeting 2/20.

Office Hours: The office is open Monday through Thursday from 9 to 4 and closed on Fridays. Dionne Browning, Business Administra-tor, works 4 days, and Jean Eaddy, Parish Ad-ministrator, works Wednesdays and Thursdays. If you have a pastoral emergency anytime, con-tact Fr. The Weekday Bible Study now meets at Covenant Village on Thursdays at 4:30 pm. They are studying the Gospel of Mark. Eucharist follows at 6 pm. The Belmont Group meets the 3rd Monday of the month at 6:30 pm at Blaine and Cookie Rudisills. All are invited to attend.

Our Faith & Health Ministries are cur-rently on a “sabbatical” due to Reba Childers’ illness and some changes in CaroMont’s program. Please keep Reba in your prayers and watch for new offer-

ings in the future. Reba does try to keep new health information on the bulletin board by the kitchen, so check that regularly. Our health and wellness programs are coordinated through CaroMont’s Congregational Nurse program.

St. Mark’s Aikido Club meets Tues-days & Thursdays from 7:00-9:30 pm for children and adults. Children ages 8 and older are invited to learn this tra-ditional Japanese martial art. Classes are free and tailored to individual ability levels, from beginner to those working on 2nd level grading & higher. Altar Flowers are given each week in honor or memory of a person or event. Sign up sheets for the 2014 Sundays are in the black notebook by the main entrance. Cost is $50.00 and as many

as 3 families may use any one Sunday. There are many dates still available.

Church Periodical Club is an organiza-tion of the church that works to spread the Kingdom through the printed word. We contribute to a variety of children’s book programs through their Miles of Pennies program. Please remember to add your change to our jar located in the Narthex as we work to complete our 2nd mile.

Women’s Circles: Covenant Circle meets the first Monday of each month at 10:30 am at Covenant Village. They are studying life lessons learned from Old Testament women. In February they looked at Naomi

and Ruth and in March will talk about Hannah. Car-olyn Healy leads the group, which is open to all women of the parish. The Evening Circle meets the first Tuesday of the month from 7-8pm for wine, dessert and Bible study. We continue our discussion of Biblical women from Finding Balance: Loving God with Heart and Soul, Mind and Strength by the Rev. Becca Stevens. In February we will be looking at the woman who anoints Jesus with oil. Conversations last about an hour.

Our Prayer Shawl Group is an active min-istry of the church. The group works on the knitted or crocheted shawls for those in need of being “wrapped in prayer”.

Shawls are blessed and are available outside the main church doors to be given to those in need of prayer. The group meets at Caravan Coffee in Bel-mont on the 4th Monday of each month from 10-11:30 for prayer and conversation while they knit. The next gathering is February 24th. Contact Nancy Brewbaker for more information. If you need a pray-er shawl, please let Nancy know that you have taken one for her yearly report. She is now attaching the prayer that goes with them to the shawls for any with immediate needs.

The St. Mark’s Cursillo Community meets the 1st and 3rd Saturday of each month at 9:00 am in the Balthis Room for their 4th Day Group Reunion. Anyone interested in learning more about Cursillo is welcome at the Saturday meetings with its focus on prayer, study and our faith in action. If you have questions about Cursillo, speak to Fr. Shawn or to David and Vicky Burns. The next WNC Cursillo week-end will be in May. Ultreya, a diocesan gathering of those who have been to Cursillo, will be February 15th from 12:00 - 2:00 pm at St. James, Black Moun-tain and all Cursillistas are urged to attend.

The Order of St. Luke is a commu-nity of those interested in the heal-ing power of God as manifest in

our times. This group (OSL) gathers Thursdays at 7 pm for Eucharist with Anointing for Healing. The ser-vice is at St. Mark’s the 1st, 2nd and 3rd weeks and at All Saints the 4th week. Any 5th Thursdays are skipped. If you have questions about this ministry, come on a Thursday evening or speak to our Dea-con, Pat Cheshire.

Salvation Army Team C

For many years teams of people from St. Mark’s have been serving din-

ner at the Salvation Army Shelter once a month on the 2nd Tuesday. There are 3 teams of people, coordinated by Brook Crawford, who rotate the duties of providing food, helping the shelter staff prepare it, and serving it to their guest. On January 14th, Team C served 73 people a meal of ham, green beans, potato salad, sliced peaches, and rolls. Food was donated by Betsy and Bruce Steketee, Jean Eaddy, Anne Carriel, Jim Barber, Ann Jordan, Candy Grooms, Shirley Bishop, Mildred Manning,

Walt Lassiter, and Carol Barker, and served by Walt and a friend Jan Bodnar. Carol has led Team C for over a year and she needs to step down from that leadership role, though she plans to stay part of the team. If you or someone you know would like to join Team C and take over leadership coordination, please call Carol and find out what you need to do. And thank you to everyone who takes part in this valuable ministry to our neighbors in need.

FEBRUARY YOUTH ACTIVITIES

Our Episcopal Youth Community (known as EYC) meets for dinner and a variety of programs and activities each week. Danielle Witry and Fr. Shawn plan the programs and other activities with input from the young people. Friends are always welcome to attend all activities and events. Volunteer cooks for their dinner are also always needed.

EYC is designed for all young people in grades 6 through 12 and meets each Sunday night from 5 to 7 pm unless otherwise noted.

Club 45 is for our 4th and 5th graders and meets the first Sunday of each month from 4:00 to 5:30 pm. This group works to build community and learn the importance of working to-gether as a team, as well as participate in many other activities. The two groups share dinner once a month when the younger set meet.

February 2nd - Both groups played Flag Football that afternoon be-fore the Super Bowl later. They also collected over $153.00 in dona-tions for CAM through the Souper Bowl of Caring after the services.

February 9th - The group goes skiing with others from the Diocese @ Cataloochee, Maggie Valley. Cost for skiing/snowboarding is $32, $19 if you have your own equipment, $7 for a helmet. Depart from St. Mark’s at 7:30 am.

February 16th - The EYC is planning something special to do for their Valentine’s Weekend, possibly a service project with the IHN families. (Cauthen cooks.) Watch for details.

February 23rd - 5:00 pm, Dinner and Bible Study at St. Mark’s. (Millers cook.)

Cub Scout Pack 4 News

In August the minister of ARP Church down the street decided they could

no longer be the charter organization for the boys of Scout Troop and Pack 4 which was meeting at their church. His decision was based on the nation-al Boy Scout of America decision to allow gay scouts to participate. At the time, Greg Dills, who is involved with their Scout Committee and the Pack, asked the clergy and vestry if St. Mark’s would be interested in offering the boys a home. The answer was an overwhelming “yes” and our offer to be their chartering agency was made. Due to a variety of reasons, most having to do with space issues, the Boy Scout Troop decided to move to First Pres-byterian, but the Cub Scouts were having trouble finding a final home there. Again in early January, Greg again asked if we would be willing to host just the Cub Scout Pack. Again the answer was “yes”. The vestry voted unanimously to include them and Shawn has signed the charter as their sponsoring organization. The boys and their leaders now meet here on Tuesday evenings. This past Sunday we hosted our first (or at least in a long time) Scout Sunday with over 20 members and families of Pack 4 partic-ipating in the service. Thank you for welcoming this new group to St. Mark’s.

NEW ST. MARK’S DIRECTORY

It is time for St. Mark’s to update our Parish Directory. We are using an online format as our main source of information for most people, with printed op-tions available for those who want a hard-copy.

The online model allows us to use any picture of you and your family that you might like to submit as well as pictures taken at church. If you and your family have a picture of eve-ryone that you would like to use for our directory (perhaps one that graced this year’s Christmas cards?), send it electronically to the church to the attention of Polly Redd (pgr@stmarksgastonia.org) You can send in a picture of you all at a Panthers or Duke football game (or any other game for that matter), or a picture of everyone around the Christmas tree, or a group shot from the beach last summer. Any picture that you want to submit should be acceptable. We ask that your submitted pictures be in a jpg format to be used. We have already received a couple of family pictures, so get them in.

We will set up times to take your pictures at church. It will be a very casual shot with whoever you want included and there will be no “sales” involved. Be watching for times and dates for picture taking at church.

One step in this process is to assure that all the information we have on addresses, phone numbers and email contacts is current in our system. We will have opportunities for everyone to update their information on Sundays and at other times. Once we have done that for several weeks, we may call people to update info, or use a form for those who have not updated. Please be looking for Polly on Sunday mornings to check and up-date your information so we can get you and all your family members the information of what is happening at St. Mark’s.

Once we have current info on everyone and begin to get pictures to post, the directory will go live and we will give everyone directions for how to access it on our web page. Be watching for new details as this process continues, and be sure you are included.

Daily Morning Prayer has new times. Morn-ing Prayer is said Mon-day through Thursday in the sanctuary. They begin with a period of silence at 8 :15 am and the Daily Office begins at 8:30.
