General Information Dear Parents: St. Mark’s Episcopal School is delighted to announce the auditions for its upcoming production of Mary Poppins. Auditions will be held on the SMES Gym Stage on Saturday, December 9th starting at 10:00am. Packet Contents

Our production schedule will run from the read-thru in December to the performances on March 15, 16, and 17 of 2018 with Christmas break in between. Participating in the musical requires the commitment and dedication similar to playing on our school’s sports teams. A complete and detailed list of rehearsals is included in this packet, but in general, please plan for four rehearsals a week with more time commitment for principal roles. Not every character will be called for every rehearsal. The rehearsal Instrctors will follow this schedule: Mondays: Dance rehearsal - Ms. Tina Tuesdays: Blocking with Mrs. Williams Thursdays: Blocking and music rehearsal - Mrs. Cowley Saturdays: Dancing, singing, and acting - All instructors Please fill out the audition form, commitment contract, and costume information form completely and turn it in at auditions. We do ask that all of our participants pay a one-time $100 production fee, which will be billed through your FACTS school account upon auditioning for the musical. This participation fee will help to pay for the following items.

• A custom Mary Poppins show t-shirt • Costume rental or purchase • Prop and scenery purchase or rental • Professionsal backdrop rentals • Costume cleaning and maintenance items for Tech Week

I’ve included a Character Plot which will give you an overview of the show as well as descriptions of the characters. There are roles for everyone in a musical, so read this carefully as it will help you select a good role and prepare your child for auditions. Audition Expectations Each student will have a scheduled audition time. All students auditioning for Mary Poppins will need to:

Audition Etiquette:

• Arrive Early- Early is on time. On time is late. Late is you’re fired. • Dress the part. Auditions are like job interviews. Look your best. • TAKE YOUR AUDITION SERIOUSLY. Prepare. Memorize your song. • Bring your dance clothes in a bag with you so you can change for your dance call. • REMEMBER THAT YOUR AUDITION BEGINS THE MOMENT YOU WALK IN. Be yourself. Be

friendly. Show us your forethought, your preparation and confidence. Students will be auditioning for a SPECIFIC ROLE by singing a prepared song from the show with the accompaniment tracks provided. Auditions will be closed to all students, but parents of the child auditining may watch his or her student audition Audition Materials The producition team needs to hear your singing voice! Choose a character that you would like to portray and find the matching song for that character below. Choose a song that shows off your singing voice. Due to time, you do not need to sing the entire song, just the cuts listed in the packet and on the music. All audition materials can be found on the website: www.smestheatre.com Callbacks (If needed) If the produciution team would like to see a student audition again, he or she will be asked to sing/act again during the dance audition that same day. If we do hold callbacks and your child is not called, it does not mean that they are not being considered for a part; we may have already cast him or her during their first audition.

Casting and Characters Synopsis Based on P.L. Travers’ beloved book series of the same name, Mary Poppins became an immediate hit when it premiered as a movie musical in 1964. Forty years later, Cameron Macintosh conceived of an enchanting stage musical that combines elements of Disney’s film with material inspired by Travers’ books. In the musical, Bert, a jack-of-all-trades, invites us into the world of London, England in 1910 — and, specifically, into the dysfunctional home of the Banks family. Jane and Michael, the young Banks children, have sent yet another nanny packing, dismissing these children as hopelessly and irrevocably spoiled and misbehaved. With a father who works constantly and mother who is always distracted, Jane and Michael have suffered without strong caretaking forces in their lives. Then the magical Mary Poppins flies in on the wind, bringing with her a combination of whimsy, magic, and disciplined common sense to the children’s lives. Together, they go on memorable and magical adventures — and also learn the importance of a tidy nursery and of taking the medicine they need (with a spoonful of sugar, of course.) Mary Poppins’ transformational influence does not stop with the children — eventually, she teaches the grown-ups, as well, to open up and realize that “anything can happen if you let it.”

Character Descriptions Principal Female Roles Mary Poppins Jane and Michael Banks' new nanny. She is practically perfect in every way (and knows it, in a most delightful way). She is extraordinary, neat and tidy, and sometimes a little frightening but always exciting. The world interacts with her in a magical, but normal for her, way. She should be able to move well and tap ability would be a bonus. She will speak with a standard British accent. Female, 20 - 30 yrs old Range: Soprano with a big range Winifred Banks George's wife and Jane and Michael's mother. A former actress, she is a loving mother who is busy trying to live up to her husband's desire to only associate with "the best people" as well as be the model wife and mother. She worries that she's not up to these tasks but she discovers that she is. She will speak with a standard British accent. Female, 30 - 40 yrs old Range: Mezzo Soprano or Alto Principal Male Roles Bert The narrator of the story, Bert is a good friend, and perhaps something more, to Mary Poppins and possesses his own touch of magic. Bert has many occupations, including lamp-lighter, sidewalk artist and chimney sweep. Bert watches over the children as well as the happenings on Cherry Tree Lane. He has charm and speaks with a Cockney accent. Bert needs to be a good dancer and will tap dance. Male, 30 - 39 yrs old Range: Baritone or Tenor George Banks The father to Jane and Michael Banks, George is a banker to the core. Demanding "precision and order" in his household, he tries to be a good provider but often forgets to be a good father. His emotional armor, however, conceals a sensitive soul. He will speak with a standard British accent. Male, 40 - 45 yrs old - Range: Baritone or Tenor

Principal Children’s Roles Jane Banks The high-spirited daughter of Mr. and Mr. Banks, she is bright and precocious but she and her brother Michael often misbehave to get the attention of their parents. She will speak with a standard British accent. Female, 11 yrs old Range: Mezzo Soprano Michael Banks The cute and cheeky son of Mr. and Mrs. Banks. Excitable and naughty, he adores his father and tries to be like him. Both he and Jane misbehave in order to get the attention of their parents. He will speak with a standard British accent. Male, 9 yrs old Range: Boy Soprano Featured Female Roles/Ensemble Mrs. Brill The housekeeper and cook for the Banks family. Overworked and sometimes grumpy, she's always complaining that the house is understaffed. Her intimidating exterior is a cover for the warmth underneath. She will speak with a Cockney accent. Female, 50 - 60 yrs old RangeAlto or Mezzo Soprano Bird Woman Her outward appearance is dirty and off-putting, but she shows the Banks children that appearances can be deceiving. She tries to sell her crumbs for birds to passersby, who ignore her as if she doesn't exist. Sings "Feed the Birds." She speaks with a Cockney accent. Female, 40+ yrs old Range: Alto or Mezzo Soprano Katie Nanna The last in a long line of nannies for the Banks children before Mary Poppins arrives, she is overwhelmed and upset and has absolutely had her fill of the Banks children. She will speak with a Cockney accent. Will double as ensemble. Female, 20 - 40 yrs old Speaking Role Mrs. Corry Owns a magical gingerbread letter shop which has been around for a long, long time. She is a mysterious and largerthan-life woman who is of no real place or time and appears ageless. May double as ensemble. Female, 25+ Range: Mezzo Soprano or Alto Miss Andrew George's overbearing and scary nanny. With her bottle of nasty-tasting brimstone and treacle to keep naughty children in line, she is a bully who only knows one way of doing things - her way. She speaks with a standard British accent Female, 40 - 60 yrs old Range: Mezzo Soprano Miss Lark The haughty next-door neighbor of the Banks family who treats her dog, Willoughby, as if he were her child. She will double as ensemble. She will speak with a standard British accent. Female, 40-60 yrs old Speaking Role

Miss Smythe The Bank Chairman's humorless secretary. She will speak with a standard British accent. Will double as ensemble. Female, 40 - 50 yrs old Speaking Role Featured Male Roles/Ensemble Robertson Ay The houseboy to the Banks family, Roberston Ay is a bit of comic relief. Lazy, sleepy and grumbling, he never gets things right and believes himself to be useless. He doesn't do a lot of singing, but his "Spoonful" solo is a fun surprise. He will speak with a Cockney accent. Male, 20 - 30 yrs old Range: F3 - G#4, Tenor Admiral Boom A retired Royal Navy man and neighbor of the Banks family. A physically large man with a loud and booming voice, he speaks in Navy jargon and has a soft spot for his neighbor, Miss Lark. He will speak with a standard British accent. May double as ensemble. Male, 50+ yrs old Speaking Role Neleus The statue of a young boy in the park. Neleus was separated from his father, Poseidon, and misses him very much. A small and lonely being, he is very happy to befriend Jane and Michael. He is chased about the park by two female statues. Must be a strong dancer. He will speak with a standard British accent. Will double as ensemble. Male, 18 - 25 yrs old Range: B2 – D4, Baritone Bank Chairman The head of the bank where Mr. Banks is employed. He is focused on the bottom line and his cold demeanor is reflected in the cold walls of the bank. He will speak with a standard British accent. Will double as ensemble. Male, 50+ yrs old Range: C3 - D4, Baritone Ensemble Roles Mollie and Ollie (2 children who help Mrs.Corry), Stage age 9 – 11 years old Valentine and other Toys Chimney Sweeps Park-goers 2 -4 statues. All should be strong actors, singers, dancers and movers. Chimney sweeps may be both male and female and will ideally be strong dancers with tap experience. Not all ensemble roles will dance. The ensemble will double as some of the character roles.

Example: “Hello, my name is John Smith. I’m a 7th grade student and I’ll be trying out for the part of Bert.” Important Notes! Your director is looking for expression, creativity, preparation, and a commanding speaking voice from the stage! Have fun with your monologue! Don’t be afraid to try something different and move around! The best way to prepare is to practice out loud in a full voice! Pair up with a partner and perform your monologues for each other! Practice out loud in front of your mom or dad! Video record yourself on your phone and watch for ways to improve! Principal Lines Mary Poppins(female, singer, good mover, proper British accent) nanny Your nursery is rather like a bear pit, isn't it? Well, let’s begin (she opens her carpet bag) well, first things first. I always say, the place to hang a hat is on a hat stand. (Poppins pulls a full size hatstand out of her bag & hangs her hat, then…) Every indoor room needs a little bit of the outdoor world (pulls out a potted plant and places it in room). Tut. Tut. Children! Looking in a lady’s bag. You may think there’s nothing in it. Never judge things by their appearance. Even old carpetbags. I'm sure I never do. (looks at her handiwork in the room) Much better! Now, let me see. (searches in her bag for one more item) That's funny. I always carry it with me. It must be here somewhere. My tape measure. I want to see how you two children measure up. I know it's down here somewhere. Ah, ha-ha, ha-ha! Here it is. Good. Come along, then. Quickly! Bert( male, singer, good mover, cockney accent) chimney sweep, street artist, That’s me, at your service. It so happens that today I’m a chimney sweep. Now, now, don't carry on so, Jane. Who's after you? Your Father?! Well, now, there must be some mistake. Your dad's a fine gentleman and he loves ya! You know, begging your pardon, but the one my heart goes out to is your father. There he is in that cold, heartless bank day after day, hemmed in by mounds of money. They makes cages in all sizes and shapes, you know. Bank-shaped some of 'em, carpets and all. Jane Banks(female, singer) child, lively, messy, compassionate, fun, Good morning, father. We had the most wonderful day yesterday. Mary Poppins taught us how to play, “Tidy Up.” The toys came to life and did all the work, spit spot, we hardly had to do a thing. And then Mary Poppins made us play “A Walk in the Park” in the park. And the statues came to life--And the sky turned purple-- And we danced with street artists. Mary Poppins! What games are we going to play today?! Michael Banks (male, singer) child, brother to Jane, wants to fly a kite with his father Mary Poppins doesn't care what happens to us. I don’t care if she only promised to stay 'til the wind changed. I don’t care if the wind has changed. We still need her. Mary Poppins, you can’t go now! Mum is crying in her handkerchief. Father’s gone missing. The cook and Ellen are running in and out of the house in a panic. The Police are in the living room. Scotland Yard has been called in. And I am NOT exaggerating….It’s all because of me I wouldn’t give my tuppence to that old goat at the bank. MISS ANDREW: My journey was thoroughly unpleasant. I never enjoy travel. You must be poor George’s wife. Your flowerbeds are disgracefully untidy! Take my advice: plant evergreens. Or better still, have nothing there at all, just a plain cement courtyard. Fond of flowers? Then you are a very silly woman.

George Banks(male, singer) Father of Jane and Michael, always serious, has forgotten how to have fun, wants to be upstanding and raise responsible children. Children, I am not interested in what Mary Poppins says or her ridiculous words, supercalifragi-whatever. Utter nonsense. Too much silliness is unhealthy for young minds. Nor do I wish to keep hearing her name for the remainder of the day. Where’ve you been anyway? You’re late.. Now come along! Michael, I will not permit you to throw your money away to feed some ragamuffin birds! When we go inside the bank, I shall show you what may be done with your tuppence. You will learn how to invest it and make it grow. George Banks(after he gets fired from the bank) Just one word, sir. Supercalifragilistic- expialidocious. You heard me, Supercalifragilistic- expialidocious. Mary Poppins was right. It's extraordinary. It does make you feel better! Oh, yes. It is a word. A perfectly good word, actually. Would you like to hear a perfectly marvelous joke? A real snapper! There are these two wonderful young people, Jane and Michael. And they meet one day on the street, and Jane says to Michael, "I know a man with a wooden leg named Smith." and Michael says, "Really? What's the name of his other leg?" (laughs joyfully) Supercalifragilistic-expialidocious. I'm feeling better all the time! Mrs. Corry(female, singer) In charge of the Talking Shop where the word ‘supercalifragilistic’ is discovered. Lookie-here...if it isn’t Mary Poppins! What can I do for you? I’m afraid we’re all out of aphorisms, adages, and simple truths. There’s been a run on everything. I’m even out of words. So many chatterboxes today!...But let me see what I have left. Oooh, I do have some letters. For an ounce, you can pick 15 letters. Have at it. Katie Nanna(female, no singing) The nanny who quits because she can’t control the children That’s the final straw! Those children can swim to America, for all I care! I wouldn't stay in this house another minute, not if you heap me with all the jewels in the Vatican. Stand away from that door, Mrs. Brill! Those little beasts have run away from me for the last time. I said my say, and that's all I'll say. I've done with this house forever. Bank Chairman(male or female, no solo singing) A crabby old man who runs the bank Tuppence, tuppence! That’s precisely how I started. So you want to be a banker, young man? We can always use more money to, to put to work for the bank, can't we, boy? So, you have tuppence? May I be permitted to see it? Now give it to me. You don’t want to use your tuppence to feed birds. Feed the birds and what have you got? Fat birds! Ensemble Lines Younger students (3rd,4th Grade) not auditioning for a certain part may pick one of the short lines below to speak with a dramatic voice)

SMES Theatre Committment Participation in SMES activities is a privilege and our school believes each person involved is entitled to a positive experience. As such, all students are required to follow the behavioral standards listed below:

• Show respect to SMES staff, students and volunteers. • Be respectful of all property including costumes, the stage area and props • Stay in approved areas of the theater or gym at all times. No wandering is allowed • Behave in an appropriate manner at all times during rehearsals and performances • Be on time for all rehearsals and performances.

Attendance Students are to attend all rehearsals for scenes or music numbers they are involved in. This year students may not miss or leave early more than three times. (This includes for doctor’s appointments, vacations, sickness, sports practice etc.) More than three unexcused absences will put students in jeopardy of losing their part in the show. When in doubt, communicate with the director. Attendance will be taken at the beginning of each rehearsal by the instructors. Tech and Dress Reeharsals Friday, March 9-Tuesday, March 13. You must attend these rehearsals.

Mary Poppins Conflict Form Instructions Please read instructions carefully and follow the directions exactly. Please note that the rehearsal dates and times included on this form indicate all the possible rehearsal times. No student will be called to all the rehearsal times indicated in this document. Although principal/supporting actors and featured singers and dancers will be called to more rehearsals than ensemble members, they will not necessarily need to attend the entire rehearsal on any given day..
