Faith Formation Holy Humor Sunday...the First Sunday after Easter
Human Growth and Development - I taught lessons on this subject every year with sixth graders. My 'word for the day' the first day of instruction on this unit was 'Puberty.' When ask-ing the class if they could define puberty, no one responded, but one little boy enthusiastically
waved his arm insisting to be called on. His response, "Puberty is when you are really poor." The entire class giggled and the ice was finally broken due to a humorously defined version of 'poverty' ! Why am I beginning my article with this humorous story? Be-cause it is the first Sunday after Easter. For centuries in Eastern Orthodox, Catholic and Protestant countries, the week following Easter Sunday, including "Bright Sunday" (the Sunday after East-er), was observed by the faithful as "days of joy and laughter" with parties and picnics to celebrate Jesus' resurrection. Churchgoers and pastors played practical jokes on each other, drenched each other with water, told jokes, sang and danced. The custom was rooted in the musings of early church theologians (like Augustine, Gregory of Nyssa and John Chrysostom) that God played a practi-cal joke on the devil by raising Jesus from the dead. "Risus pas-chalis- the Easter laugh," the early theologians called it. As I researched Holy Humor Sunday, I came across a sermon that began with the telling of what happened after Forrest Gump died. He arrived at the heavenly gates and St. Peter told Forrest that he would have to answer some questions to enter. One of which was, "What is God's first name?" Forrest immediately re-plied, "Andy." St. Peter asked him how he knew this, to which Forrest replied, “I learned it in church. We used to sing about it.” Forrest broke into song, “Andy walks with me, Andy talks with me, Andy tells me I am His own.” St. Peter opened the gate to heaven and said, “Run, Forrest, Run!” Rejoice! It is Holy Humor Sunday! ~Blessings, Linda Cummer, Faith Formation Coordinator
Christian Service & Responsibility
Let us hear the cry of the earth, wounded in a thousand ways by human greed. Let us allow her to remain a welcoming home, in which no one feels excluded. —Tweet from Pope Francis DID YOU KNOW? Stella Maris recently signed a Green Purchase Policy. Philosophically, this is one encouraging demonstration of our parish commitment to caring for the earth, our common home. It denotes action in keeping with the Pope's encyclical, Laudato Si' “On Care for Our Common Home” and also Catholic Social teach-ing. In practice, the Policy is aspirational, yet practical. The inten-tion is to enter an era when buying goods and services and forming organizational habits less harmful to the environment, will receive preference whenever feasible and financially expedient. This meas-ure is drawn from and follows the national trend as businesses, or-ganizations, college, state, local and federal entities acknowledge responsibility for activities, good and bad, that impact our common home. Our actions can teach us all. WHERE DO YOUR DONATIONS GO ? Feed My People on av-erage assists 75 households each month. In addition to food dona-tions, the agency spends $20,000 per year to purchase food items. Our donation of $1,000 was used for this. $1,000 given to Door County Secret Santa enables many northern Door families to be given a gift of warmth in the form of wood, propane, oil and electric during the Christmas season. Our $500 given to the Red Kettle Salvation Army campaign last December was used to help people in need right here in Door County. DONATIONS ALWAYS APPRECIATED Place a check in the collection basket. noting “for CSR” in the memo. Or to give elec-tronically, go to the website to make a separate donation to “CSR”.
CHECK IT OUT! The new parish website is up and running. Our website address remains unchanged. Visit the new site at www.stellamarisparish.com to see the updates and new design. GROW YOUR FAITH: Would you like to be able to learn about our Catholic faith anywhere, anytime? There isn’t always time to watch EWTN or participate in a Bible study but the radio is acces-sible anywhere and anytime. Relevant Radio is broadcasted from Green Bay on 1030 AM or a free app download is available for your phone or tablet. Once I came across it, I was hooked and lis-ten to it live or as podcasts daily. Prayers and daily readings are available by a touch of a finger. Try it, you won’t be sorry! As the Relevant Radio ambassador for our parish, I am available for ques-tions. Shirley Raasch, (920) 839-2157. THE ADULT FAITH FORMATION COMMITTEE has pur-chased the new documentary, "Pope Francis - A Man of His Word". The film is intended to be a personal journey with Pope Francis, rather than a biographical documentary about him. The pope's ide-as and his message are central to this documentary, which sets out to present his work of reform and his answers to today's global questions through revealing interviews with him. If you would like to view this 133 minute DVD, it can be borrowed from the Faith Formation committee. Contact Jan Liss at (920) 839-2630 or at [email protected] to obtain it.

Happy Easter!!! He Is Risen! He Is Risen, Indeed! The Easter Season is the longest special liturgical season: 50 days. Why is it so long? To highlight the im-portance of the Sacred Triduum leading into Easter. Jesus is Risen! Death has not won. Darkness is ban-ished. And Light lives on. There is so much to cele-brate during this blessed time. We share the phrase, “Happy Easter” on Easter Sunday, but let us remember that we can say “Happy Easter” every day during this season. Perhaps make a conscience effort to say “Happy Easter” at least one time each day during this season to help us remember the Glory in Christ’s Resur-rection and to share that Glory with those with whom we interact. Happy Easter!!!
A note from the designer of our Easter banner: “With spring comes Easter, a time of rebirth. New life is cele-brated, particularly by flowers. After a harsh winter they rise anew, as if from the dead, from the darkness of the ground to the light above. One flower in season came to mind as an obvi-ous choice to represent the Three Days. Originating at the center extending outwards, I was able to contour a three-petaled trillium flower with one continuous, concentric loop. I interpreted this as the cycle of
life, encompassing birth, death and rebirth. This peren-nial path delineates and revolves around a central cross. Essentially, it is an Easter Triduum trillium.” – Ryan Miller
Parish Membership Stella Maris Parish is delighted when new people want to join our parish and gladly wel-comes them into our faith com-munity. Contact the parish of-fice.
Infant Baptism The baptism of new babies and young children revitalizes our faith community. Please con-tact the parish office to make arrangements for baptism.
Adult Initiation The Catholic Church is always enriched whenever any adult chooses to be Catholic. Adults wishing to be baptized, or bap-tized adults wishing to be con-firmed, the RCIA program is available.
Reconciliation God’s great mercy is some-thing to be celebrated. Ritually we Catholics experience God’s unconditional love in the sacra-ment of reconciliation. Our pastor is available by appoint-
ment by calling (920) 421-0025.
Sacrament of Matrimony A faith-filled wedding is a joy-ful time for the couple and the parish. Our parish wants to have all weddings here be the best possible. The couple must meet with the pastor before a date can be reserved. Please contact the parish office at least 12 months in advance to begin preparation.
Ministry to the Sick Everyone needs extra compas-sion and care when his or her health is not at its best. As a parish, we try to meet that need. Communal anointing Masses take place twice yearly, with individual anointing done when requested. Parishioners in the hospital, nursing home or other institution are encour-aged to notify the office to arrange for visits or commun-ion.
