Student Health Service

• Mission– To provide access to quality healthcare while promoting overall student well-being

• Vision– Promoting the well-being of students by empowering them with the knowledge,

skills and spirit to take responsibility for personal, family and community health

• AAAHC Accreditation (Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care)

– On-going self evaluation, peer review and education to continuously improve the care and services we provide

NDSU Counseling Center

• Located in 212 Ceres Hall

• No charge for individual, couple’s or group counseling

• Staff:– Doctoral and Master’s level providers

– Graduate student trainees

• Services available:– Personal, emotional, academic, and career counseling

– Academic skills and career development for-credit classes

– 24-hour on-call counselor

– Extended hours (Open until 7:00 PM on Tuesday and Thursday)

– Stress reduction and coping skills education opportunities

– Weekly meditation, stress and anxiety reduction workshop, opportunity to visit with therapy dogs, Mental Health First Aid Training

Medical Laboratory

• Testing is performed for diagnostic purposes on samples such:– Blood, urine, throat and nasal swabs, etc.

• CLIA Certification – Federal survey process

– Zero deficiencies since 1995

• Staffed by licensed laboratory professionals

Pharmacy

• Do not need to be a clinic patient to use the pharmacy

• Assist with new and existing prescriptions

• Prescription transfers

• Over the counter medications & supplies

• Able to process claims with most insurance companies

• Staffed by licensed pharmacists

Radiology (X-ray)

• Outside orders accepted

• Digital technology (CR)

• Other imaging needs are referred outside of SHS– CT

– MRI

– Ultrasounds

– Etc.

• Images professionally read by a licensed radiologist

• Staffed by a licensed radiologic technologist

Dietitian

• No charge for appointments

• Appointments focusing on:– Diabetes

– Eating behavior concerns

– Food sensitivities

– Healthful eating

– High blood pressure

– Nutrition

– Weight management

– Other dietary-related questions

– Brief self-assessment that provides accurate and detailed information about risk patterns, alcohol tolerance, family risk factors, harm reduction strategies, NDSU and community resources.

Sexual Assault Prevention

& Advocacy• “We Take A Stand” Workshop

– Mandatory for all first-year and transfer students

– Focuses on sexual violence, relationship violence, stalking, bystander intervention and personal safety.

• Hours of Operation (Monday – Friday)– 9-month Academic Year:

• 8:00 am – 5:00 pm

• 7:30 am – 4:00 pm

Student Health Fee

The Student Health Fee is paid with each student’s tuition each semester

• Include but not limited to:– Dietitian appointments

Insurance Billing

• SHS will implement insurance billing January 1, 2019 – Please reference our website under the Billing link for updated information

– We will send updated information out to students via the student listserv

• Charges apply for additional services which include, but not limited to: – Immunizations/injections

– Laboratory services

– Prescriptions/medications

– Procedures

– Treatments/supplies

– X-ray exams

Paying for Charges

• Patient responsibility (charges) are posted to the student’s account– This can take up to one month

– Once posted, must be paid within 30 days

• Student account charges can be paid:– Online through Campus Connection

– In person at the NDSU One Stop (Memorial Union)

• Itemized statement of services are available– Email notification is sent to the student’s NDSU email when the statement is ready

– This statement is available:

• Online via Student Health Portal (Statements tab)

• Upon request at SHS

• Insurance reimbursement– Responsibility of the student for Fall semester to submit the statement

Consent

• Students over age 18:– The student must sign a release of information form before health information will

be provided and/or discussed with any parent/guardian

– This form is available on our website under “Forms”

• “Authorization and Request for Release of Medical Information”

• Students under age 18:– The student will need to have signed consent from a parent/guardian before

receiving care

– This form is available on our website under “Forms”

• “Consent to Treat Minor Child (Parent/Guardian Authorization)”

Immunization Requirements

• Measles, Mumps and Rubella (MMR)– 2 documented doses starting after age 1; second dose must be at least 28 days after

first dose

– OPTIONAL: Lab Results of MMR titer (a blood test to test immunity)

• No vaccine would be required if titer proved immunity

• If not immune, then vaccination series would be required

• Meningitis Vaccination (Meningococcal Disease)– Students 21 years of age and younger must provide documentation of immunization

AFTER age 16 (against strains A, C, Y, W-135)

– Meningitis-B does not meet this requirement

• Offered at SHS by appointment if any of these are needed

Immunization Requirements

• Deadlines:– Fall semester: August 1st

– Spring semester: January 1st

– Summer semester: May 1st

• A registration hold is placed on non-compliant student accounts which will prevent the student from registering for classes

• Resources to help you find immunization records:– Doctors’ office (clinic/hospital records)

• May be accessible through an online portal

– Military records

– High school transcript

– State registry of where child was born

Immunization Records

• Acceptable documentation must include:– First and last name

– Date of birth

– Student ID number (preferred)

– The name of the source of the record (such as name of hospital)

– Date of each vaccination

• Submit your records via:– Student Health Portal by uploading document(s)

– Email to [email protected]

– Fax to 701-231-6132

– HELPFUL TIP: you can take a photo of the record and send it to us!

Tuberculosis (TB) Testing

• Have you traveled or lived in another country?– Students who have lived in or traveled to a high risk country for longer than 30 days

will need to receive TB testing

– May include study abroad students

– Most applicable for international students

• Testing types:– TB mantoux skin testing

– Quantiferon gold blood test

• School program or internship requirement

• Job requirement

• Not sure if TB testing is needed?– Call Student Health Service and ask to speak to a nurse
