Fun Facts About the Aeolian-Skinner Op. 1132

Derry’s Aeoian-Skinner Op. 1132 has 2,795 pipes ranging in size from 1/4-inch long to 16 feet long.

Op. 1132 comes with several new pipe sets (ranks) that were not included in the organ’s original installation:• An 8’ Harmonic Flute on the Great division, which

features almost all original E.M. Skinner pipework from 1929.

• An 8’ Concert Flute on the Choir division, which was built of all new pipes from Organ Supply Industries, based on the exact scale of similar Skinner pipes.

• A 16’ Bourdon in the Pedal division, which came from the Reuter Organ Company’s Opus 1499, the instrument previously installed at Derry Church.

Op. 1132 is composed of five distinct “divisions.” Each of the three keyboards you see when looking at the organ console is the home of one division. The top keyboard corresponds to the Swell division; the mid-dle keyboard to the Great, and the bottom keyboard to the Choir. Op. 1132 also features a “floating” Posi-tive division, which is playable from the bottom two keyboards. The pedals, which correspond to two and a half octaves of keys, comprise the final division.

Looking at the chamber from the Sanctuary, the Swell division is a side chamber on the left; the Choir is a side chamber on the right, and the Great, Positive, and Pedal divisions are in the large central chamber. The Great and Positive pipes are inter-twined at the front of the chamber, and the Pedal pipes -- the largest in the organ -- hug the back wall of the chamber.

Fitting Op. 1132 with its three additional ranks of pipes within the existing chamber at Derry Church was an enormous challenge. Pipe chests were raised on top of one another in certain cases, and multiple pipes had to be bent, or mitered, to accommodate longer pipes (see photo at right).

Organ Supply Industries built the brand-new console you see in the Sanctuary. It features modern tech-nology and a Peterson Organ Control system that allows organists to save upwards of 4,000 unique sound combinations.

A Note of Sincere Thanks We wish to thank the following individuals from the A. Thompson-Allen Organ Com-pany for their fine work on the installation of Aeolian-Skinner Op. 1132 here at Derry Church: Kurt Bocco. Chris Broome, Joseph Dzeda, Joseph Linger, Sam Linger, Joseph Sloane, Nicholas Thompson-Allen, Nate Ventrella and Zachary Ventrella.

From Organ Supply Industries, we are grate-ful to Bryan Timm and his team for their expertise in crafting the new organ console.

The Pedal division holds the largest pipes in the organ. Many were mitered (bent) in order to fit inside the organ chamber. It was important to keep the length of the pipe: the fact that they are bent does not alter their tone.

O God, you are indeed worthy of our praise and worship through beautiful music, prayer, and faithful living. Yet we turn away and worship the false gods of money, talent, power, and pop-ularity. We take you for granted, Lord. You call us to live for the praise of Christ’s glory, but we often seek praise for ourselves instead. Forgive us for these and all of our sins, as we continue to confess in silence…

*ASSURANCE OF GRACE Friends, remember your baptism and believe the good news. In Jesus Christ we are forgiven.

*LITANY OF DEDICATION FOR THE AEOLIAN-SKINNER OPUS 1132 PIPE ORGAN O God, you are the source of all goodness and beauty, the creative power pulsating in our humanity, bringing forth skilled composers and poets, technicians, and musicians. Accept our heartfelt expressions of gratitude for the gift of music and, especially today, for the gift of this new organ. We praise you for that music which scales the heights and plumbs the depths, which makes us feel understood even as we struggle to understand, which assists in the subtle training of the soul, and which breathes new life into ancient stories. We dedicate this organ to your transcendent and sacred purposes: to opening the windows of our hearts to the refreshing winds of your Spirit, to the comforting of the sorrowful, to the calming of our frantic pace, to the quickening of joy, to the deepening of our communion with you, and to the celebration of divine revelations and revolutions. O God, enable us to be both faithful and imaginative stewards of all your gifts. We dedicate this organ and ourselves to the high and holy calling to which you have anointed us. Amen.

The organ we are dedicating today was originally installed in 1950 at the Church of the Redeemer in New Haven, Connecticut. Its design was heavily influenced by that church’s organist,H. Leroy Baumgartner. Mr. Baumgartner held unique views on organ construction which re-sulted in several idiosyncrasies in the New Haven installation. G. Donald Harrison, the tonal director for the Aeolian-Skinner organ company since the merger of the Aeolian and E.M. Skinner organ companies in 1932, became so frustrated with Mr. Baumgartner’s many demands that he handed the project over to his assistant, Aubrey Thompson-Allen.

Aubrey served as an assistant to Henry Willis of the Willis Organ Company, known for its instal-lations at Westminster Cathedral and St. Paul’s Cathedral, London, among many others. Shortly after completing the New Haven organ, Aubrey formed the A. Thompson-Allen Organ Company which is renowned for its restorations of E.M. Skinner and Aeolian-Skinner organs.

Derry Church purchased the Op. 1132 in fall 2019 as the Church of the Redeemer was closing. We were fortunate to have Aubrey’s son Nicholas of the A. Thompson-Allen Company in charge of the organ’s restoration and installation. Nick Thomp-son-Allen referenced factory records from the original installation, which included specific wind pressures for each part of the organ. He restored our Aeolian-Skinner Op. 1132 to the pressures originally intended for the instrument.

The installation was completed in September 2021.

From January 1966 to May 2020, the Reuter Op. 1499 provided organ music in the Sanctuary of Derry Church. It is now installed in the St. Theresa-Little Flower Catholic Church in Memphis, Tennessee.

Over many months, the pipes were carefully wrapped and packed, then driven by truck from New Haven to Hershey.

Pipes in New Haven were dismanteld, labeled, then sent to the A. Thompson-Allen Company for cleaning and voicing.

The empty organ chamber in New Haven.

Each pipe was individually voiced on the voicing machine at the A. Thompson-Allen Company shop.

It has taken months to carefully fit and install all components into the organ chamber. The last step has been tuning and regulating the pipes so they sound just right in their new home.
