3 A Note From the Pastor

Dear Friends in Fellowship and Faith, I thank God for another Lenten season to share with you as brothers and sisters in Christ! I have enjoyed reading our Lenten books together in small groups. This year, we are reading a book by the former Archbishop of Canterbury, Rev. Rowan Williams. His book “The Sign and the Sacrifice” will explore the meaning of the cross and resurrection in Jesus day and today. It is a meaningful study for Lent. We are also reading the Lenten Devotion guides that you have written “I am With You Always”. I thank all the writers for sharing stories that are personal, poignant and powerful as they recount our experiences of God in everyday life. March is time when we prepare for the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ in our time of Lent. We start on Ash Wednesday, March 1st, with our Lenten Communion Services each Wednesday at 6:30 around the extended table in Knox Hall. Each week is a chance to remember the story of Jesus’ life and death and resurrection as we explore the theme “Eating with Christ”. We are also kicking off our Community Lenten Noon services at First Presbyterian Church around the theme: “Lord, When Was it That We Saw You?” in Matthew 25: 35, 36. Each week a different church in our community will lead the half-hour worship service and prepare a lunch to share after worship. Our church will host all the Tuesday services, and we will lead the first one on Tuesday, March 7th at 12 noon. We hope to see you all there. The women of our church will lead our morning worship service on March 12th as we celebrate the Gifts of Women in our

church. On Saturday morning (10 am to noon) on March 18th the Stewardship Committee will guide us through a program called “A Lasting Legacy” where we will explore the legacy we leave behind when we die. I will lead a session on planning your funeral service, Lawyer Jack Pletz will lead a session on wills and bequests, and Nurse Practitioner Carol Sanders will talk about how we can make the Golden Years truly golden in body and spirit. Come and share with us as we consider our Lasting Legacy.

I thank God for the commitment of this congregation to serve God, not just in Lent, but all through the year. Blessings and peace as we prepare for Resurrection Sunday this Easter.

Thanks to everyone who contributed towels to the RACS Towel Drive during January and February! As the drive ends on February 28th, we’ll report the total number of towels and wash cloths collected in the April Newsletter. All of these items will go to help the women and their families receiving assistance from RACS. We were especially pleased to welcome RACS’ Executive Director, Alan Henrickson, and Program Director, Maureen Qualheim, to our February Gathered Meeting. After sharing a delicious meal, we learned a lot about RACS’ services and history. We then made small gift bags of candy for all of RACS’ current clients – a nice surprise for these women and children going through some difficult times.

PW ANNOUNCES A SPRING PAPER DRIVE!

Beginning in mid-April, we will be collecting paper towels, toilet paper and boxes of tissues for both RACS and for the new HALO Shelter! The collection box will be available right after Easter Sunday and we’ll collect through mid-May. These paper supplies are on the “wish lists” for both of these organizations. March is Women’s History Month with many opportunities to reflect on and celebrate the history of women in America and around the world. http://womenshistorymonth.gov/. A century ago women were still marching and protesting to gain the right to vote! But we are reminded that much of the world still views women as second class citizens. March 8th is International Women’s Day, a day initially commemorating a garment workers’ strike in 1909, but later adopted by the United Nations as a date to commemorate women worldwide. Also, during March is the annual Commission on the Status of Women, now in its 61st year. Finally, March 25th is Orange Day – a day when we are encouraged to wear orange as a bright and optimistic color representing a future free from violence against women and girls.

Presbyterian Women Celebrate the Gifts of Women every year in early March – during our morning services on March 12th, look for women helping lead worship and highlighting some of the contributions made in our own congregation and community by the women in our families. Take time this month to celebrate the gifts of all the women and girls in your life!

JOIN US AT THE PW-SYNOD 2017 GATHERING!

Women from the six presbyteries in our synod will be gathering in Branson on April 21-23 (the weekend after Easter) for our 2017 PW-Synod Gathering. Special guests include our Churchwide PW Moderator and PW’s Executive Director. Pick up a registration brochure in the PW Slot in the church library, or talk to Anne Schneider or anyone else on the PW Coordinating Team. This will be a fun weekend!

6 SUNDAY SCHOOL NEWS

The Preschool, K-2nd Grade, and 3-5th Grade Sunday School classes, along with their parents, gathered for Family Fun workshops on the Bible and Worship. Activities included finding the four parts of worship (Assemble, Bible, Claim, Depart) in a bulletin, as well as using stickers of a little mouse listening, praying, singing, and giving to mark those actions in a worship bulletin. Other activities were: playing with little stuffed animals in a tiny sanctuary including miniature pews, looking at many different types of Bibles including one that is like a comic book, and reading the Bible story of David and Goliath using masks for the different characters. The third in this series of Family Fun Workshops is on March 5th and it will be on the Sacraments – Baptism and Communion. Please join us for these fun activities shared together. We are looking forward to VBS on June 5th-9th, when we will have so much fun with Hero Central: Discover Your Strength in God!

8 From the Social Justice Ministry Team Jefferson City Day Care Center: A Blessing to Jefferson City Families!

The Mission of Jefferson City Day Center is to provide quality early childhood education services in a caring environment primarily for children of low and middle income working families.

History: Church Women United organized Jefferson City Day Care Center in 1966 with community support and grants from local churches (including a Presbyterian Women’s Thank Offering grant). It began providing quality care for children while their parents studied at Lincoln University and/or worked. The first classroom opened in 1967 and JCDCC became a United Way Agency in 1970. The Center moved to its current facility in 1972 and opened an infant and toddler room in 1992. In 2012 the Center purchased its building from the Jefferson City Housing Authority.

Quick Facts: JCDCC is licensed for 99 children from birth to eight years of age. JCDCC offers an accredited early childhood education program, one of only 2 in Jefferson City. JCDCC fees are on a sliding scale based on Family income. All parents/guardians of children at JCDCC are employed or students, unless disabled. JCDCC offers Parenting classes and support, along with nutrition programs for low income children. JCDCC is a non-profit United Way agency; last year it received the largest single local United Way

grant. JCDCC opens at 7:00 AM and closes at 5:30 PM, Monday through Friday. Each year some of our afternoon Kids Plus students come from Jefferson City Day Care Center.

Today: Jefferson City Day Care Center is currently undergoing a renovation of the entire facility with the help of NAP tax credits through the Missouri Department of Economic Development and generous community donors led by the Friends of Children Committee. All interior work has been completed and exterior work is now underway, with completion scheduled for summer 2017.

Future Plans: Completion of the final phase of the Center’s 2-year, $400,000+ renovation and up-grade will be celebrated in early September 2017 with a huge Open House Birthday Party and the unveiling of a new name for Jefferson City Day Care Center!

Presbyterian Women, through Church Women United, continue support for Jefferson City Day Care Center by providing meals for the Parents’ Meeting the 2nd Wed of each month. Because the Center exists to ensure that all children have access to quality early childhood education, there are yearly fundraisers. A Trivia Contest, with silent auction and raffle, will be March 16, 2017 at the Millbottom, 400 W. Main. Cost is $125 for a team of 8 adults. Please contact Vicki Schildmeyer 573-635-4395 for tickets, to donate or for more information.
