ORG JANUARY 13, 2019 VOLUME 55, NO. 2 LUKE 3:15,16 As the people were filled with expectation, and all were questioning in their hearts concerning John, whether he might be the Messiah, John answered all of them by saying, “I baptize you with water; but one who is more powerful than I is coming; I am not worthy to untie the thong of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. His winnowing fork is in his hand, to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his granary; but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.” Traditional Downtown Bulletin 1.13.19.indd 1 1/10/2019 10:10:36 AM

LUX: The Dawn From On High Dan Forrest (b. 1978) I.  Illuminare Per viscera misericordiae Dei nostri in quibus visitavit nos oriens ex alto ….. By the mercy of our God the dawn from on high will break upon us, illuminare his qui in tenebris et in umbra mortis sedent ….. to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death,  ad dirigendos pedes nostros in viam pacis.  Lux ex alto, veni nos illuminare ….. to guide our feet into the way of peace.  Light from on high, come illumine us. Lux de luce apparuisti Christe, cui Magi munera offerunt ….. You appeared as Light from light, O Christ, to whom the Magi offered gifts,  Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. II.  Lux in Tenebris Lux fulgebit hodie super nos, quia natus est nobis Dominus ….. A light will shine on us today, for the Lord is born unto us. Lux in tenebris lucet et tenebrae eam non superaverunt ….. The light shines in darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. III.  The Sun Never Says Even after all this time, the sun never says to the earth, “You owe me.” Look what happens with a love like that, it lights the whole sky. IV.  Gloria in Excelsis Gloria in excelsis Deo, et in terra pax ….. Glory to God in the highest, and on earth, peace. V.  Creator of the Stars of Night Creator of the stars of night, thy people’s everlasting Light, O Christ, Thou Savior of us all, now hear thy servants when they call. Creator alme siderum, aeterna lux credentium, Christe redemptor omnium, exaudi voces supplicum. O Blest Creator of the light, who made the day with radiance bright, and o’er the newborn world did call the light from darkness first of all. When the whole world drew on toward night, thou camest, not in splendor bright as sovereign, but the humble child of Mary, virgin mother mild. To God the Father, God the Son, and God the Spirit, Three in One, laud, honor, might, and glory be from age to age eternally.  Amen.

ContriBute It is more blessed to give than to receive. —Acts 20:35It made no sense for a widow to donate her last few coins to a corrupt institution in Jerusalem, where scribes

who were dependent on those gifts “devour[ed] widows’ houses” (Mark 12:40). But in that woman’s act, Jesus saw a moving display of the proper attitude toward money. The act of giving reminds us that we live by the grace of God—like the birds and the flowers. Those creations don’t worry about their future; neither should we. Giving offers us a way to express our confidence that God will care for us just as He cares for the sparrow and lily. It’s now possible to give financially online through the church website, BuncombeStreetUMC.org. From the main menu, choose “Give”. enDowment funD
