Now in it’s 18th year in Australia and 24th in New Zealand, the Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlon was where many of our top triathletes have started their triathlon career, including 2008 Olympic Games top 10 athlete Debbie Tanner from New Zealand. I also like swimming, riding and running.” Keira likes the swimming and riding “Swimming moves your arms and I like the riding as well.” Triyana said “I love the swimming because I like to get wet and you get to run through the water. I also like the riding because I love to ride my bike fast.” Exercise and sport are an important part of the day for many kids, and providing nutritious, energy-rich meals and snacks is important. Eating well will help them stay healthy and perform at their best. Base main meals around wholegrain breads and cereals (e.g. Weet-Bix), pasta, rice, with plenty of vegetables, legumes and fruits to make them colourful and nutrient-rich. Eating a nutritious meal the night before, will help energy levels for the following day. Provide healthy snacks such as fruit to re-fuel their energy during the day (e.g. school sports day), or after they have finished their activity. Encourage your child to drink plenty of water. Being excited about their sport, they may need a little extra reminder! Encourage your child to eat breakfast everyday, even if they are a bit nervous or excited about the day ahead – it will provide energy to kick off the day full of life! Best Day of My Life Prize Draw Winners

Shopping with Kids

Weet-Bix TRYathlons offers the opportunity for children and their families to take on a great, fun challenge whilst being with their family and friends. Many kids at this year ’s Weet-Bix Melbourne TRYathlon told us how they thought this could be one of the best days of their lives!

“It ’s funs completing fun events and being acknowledged

for doing a good job. When I participate with my friends I am having fun doing it.” Said Saobien.

Ayush said it the most simply “One of the best days of my life was when I entered Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlon for the first time. It was super fun!”

Some were nervous, some were tired and some were just very excited but on the whole, the participants of this year’s Weet-Bix TRYathlon Melbourne were all ready to be a part of one of the best days they could have. With all the bright colours

and exci t ing packaging, the supermarket can be an enticing place for young shoppers and parents know all too well the influence of "pester power". So how can you navigate the supermarket, avoiding the junk food and tantrums? The following tips may help you to fill the trolley with healthy food and keep the kids happy and entertained.

Stick to the walls This is a good tip to follow at

all times, especially with children tagging along. The edges of the supermarket tend to contain the healthiest, least processed foods including breads, fresh fruits and vegetables.

All hands on deck Let your children know what

you are looking for in each section of the supermarket and get them to help spot different foods. If children are looking for specific products they're less likely to get bored. This is particularly useful when picking fresh produce. It's an opportunity to learn what different fruit and vegetables look like and how to select ripe, fresh foods. Children are more likely to try foods that they've helped choose.

Stay together S u p e r m a r k e t s m a y p u t

products they think wil l be attractive to children on lower shelves in their line of sight and

reach. Placing small children in the seat at the front of the trolley can help keep them away from temptation.

Healthy treats Grocery shopping can be a

long outing for children so there's noth ing wrong wi th g iv ing them a treat, just make sure it's a healthy option. Let them pick some of their favourite fruit, a low fat yoghurt, flavoured milk or soy milk as a healthy option.

Beware of chocolate covered checkouts

Don't let all the good work come undone when it's time to pay. Most supermarkets have confectionery free registers, so make use of these for a stress free exit from the supermarket.

An event wi th over 2 ,600 participants and 8,000 spectators, t h e We e t - B i x T R Ya t h l o n Melbourne doesn’t just happen. It requires many smiling and he lpfu l vo lunteers to make sure everything is safe and that everyone understands how things wil l work. For this amazing effort, the participants of this year’s event really know that our volunteers rock!

Zoe sa id “Vounteers rock because they give their time for free so that we can do this event.”

Samantha th inks that the volunteers are important because “They make sure everyone has fun and they are really nice. Volunteers are so helpful.”

Thank you to all our volunteers for making it a safe, fun and wxciting event for everyone!

There sure is plenty to love about Weet-Bix TRYathlon. It didn’t take long for some of the participants that we talked to, to tell us what it was that they loved the most.

“ I l o v e h o w e v e r y o n e encourages you and that everyone is a winner. I love that no matter what age you are, there is always something for you to do.” said Jordyn.

and excited kids at Weet-Bix Melbourne TRYathlon before and after the race. We all know they had a great day!

Name: Sarah DobieAge: 16Team: Triathlon Victoria Development Program

I came from a swimming and running background. I was invited to attend a TVDP camp and met my coach who was willing to help me learn more about triathlon.

Weet-Bix TRYathlon was the first triathlon I had ever done and it was a great atmosphere. After that, I was hooked.

I’m currently part of the TVDP and racing in the Victorian State Triathlon Series. My goal next season is to represent Australia at the ITU World Age Group Triathlon Championships.

Parents are Champions Too

We all know that Weet-

Bix TRYathlon is a challenge and great fun for the kids that take part. What also is really important is that parents also think the event is great We got to meet lots of happy and proud parents at this year ’s event and their children had some really strong thoughts on why their parents thought the event was so good.

Nikki said “My parents think exercise is good for us and Weet-Bix TRYathlon gets us out in the environment.”

Charlotte agreed “Weet-Bix

TRYathlon exercises our bodies and we all enjoy it.”

India thought “My parents love it because I try my beat and I have fun at Weet-Bix.”

Elise had similar thoughts “It is fun to do and my parents love it because it gets us fit and healthy.”

So Weet-Bix TRYathlon is not only great for children but enjoyed by parents to because it is a great opportunity for their kids to be a part of fun activity which promotes fitness and health.

THE OLYMPIC DREAM - Aaron Royle

Name: Aaron RoyleNickname: BugsAge: 26Born: Newcastle, NSWFirst Triathlon: 13First Tri Club: Maitland

Australia’s latest Olympic triathlete who was inspired by the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games. Aaron has qualified for the Australian team to compete at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

My name i s Aaron Royle and I am a Triathlete. I’ve never been to an Olympics Games but I did compete in Glasgow at the Commonwealth Games where I finished 8th in the individual and 3rd in the mixed relay. I was also 2012 U/23 ITU World Champion.

I grew up in Newcastle and Lived there until I was 18 when I moved to Wollongong to train under my coach Jamie Turner and the squad he had devolved then. Nowadays I spent my time between Wollongong and Falls Creek during our summer and Spain during the European Summer.

First Triathlon

Triathlon started for me at about the age of 13 years old. My swim coach at the time, who participated in age group races, suggested that I give one a go. The closest Tri club was Maitland Triathlon club, so dad and I drove the 30 minutes from Newcastle to Maitland one Sunday morning to give it a go. I had no idea what I was doing, but I had a blast. I was a swimmer who ran well so those two were fine and what kid doesn’t love riding their bike? So those 3 added together was a new level of awesomeness! Yes I did win it but to be honest I was competing against people who were even younger than I was and just as inexperienced.

Other sportsWhen I was younger I played

just about all ‘popular ’ sports that many Aussie kids play these days. Cricket, Swimming, Soccer, Running, Football to name a few. It was quickly established that anything that involved a ball or any hand-eye coordination wasn’t really my strong point. Triathlon was the perfect sport for me.

Wishing you all a day filled with fun and fitness – I’ll be

FIVE Tips Family Health Changes

Finding time to stay healthy can be difficult. Combine this with finding time to spend together as a family, and you probably feel that there are simply not enough hours in the day!

So here a re f ive ways to encourage your family to get healthy, together.

1. Go team!Families who play together,

stay active together. According to research, parents who encouraged their children to play team sports found that their kids spend less time in front of the screen.

Why not encourage your child to sign up for a sporting event such as the Sanitarium Weet-Bix Kids TRYathalon, and train for the event together as a family.

If team sports really aren't your bag, or your child's favourite pastime, then choose activities you can do individually, but together.

Running, cycling, swimming or walking, are all good ways to inject some more physical activity into your family time, and benefit your health.

2. Cook togetherResearch suggests that children

who help prepare meals with their parents eat more fruit and vegetables, which can help your family eat a more balanced diet.

To help educate and inspire your children to make healthier food choices why not cook up a storm together?

Before hitting the kitchen, you could even shop for the i n g r e d i e n t s t o g e t h e r a n d encourage them to read the nutritional information panels on the back of packaged items.

Maybe turn it in to a bit of a treasure hunt by getting them to find healthier alternatives using the free FoodSwitch app.

3. Play togetherStep away from the computer

games, and have some fun, the good old-fashioned way.

Puzzles , card games and jigsaws are great for brain fitness and can be fun for all members of the family.

4. Go off gridAccording to the Australian

Bureau of Statistics, 96 per cent of Australian children spend their recreational time watching TV or videos.

So put away those screens and head to the great outdoors, for a weekend getaway of camping, fishing, camp fires, trekking and tree climbing.

It 's thought that regularly spending time playing outdoors can have long-term benefits for children’s health and wellbeing, physical co-ordination and even ability to concentrate.

5. Take the challengeWhy not sign up for the Bupa

Family Challenge? The Bupa Family Challenge dares families to choose one or more challenges to help them make healthy changes

to their lives. Each challenge runs for one

week and involves a different activity to help you achieve your health goals.

I t i s c o m p l e t e l y f r e e t o take part and every challenge completed will increase your chances of winning some great prizes for the whole family to enjoy.

The idea is that by making healthier choices and developing healthy habits as a team, your family can boost their fitness, improve their diet, and enjoy more time together.
