1 Newsletter No. 41 - Term 4Week 11 Thursday 18 th December 2014 From the Principal…………. Wow, what a Party we had last night! Our Year 6 Graduation was held last night in our stadium. It was a celebration of the students’ seven years of primary school before they step out on the threshold to secondary school. It really was a terrific night. The parent Graduation Committee had spent many, many hours during the last few days decorating the stadium and the children were thrilled! Teachers had worked with the students writing speeches and organising the night’s events. Students had spent the last six weeks in dancing lessons and what a joy it was to watch them. There were many tears, some tears were caused by sadness of leaving friends and teachers, and lots of tears were because people were so proud of their children. There were many grandparents and family friends in the audience watching the proceedings and I had many, many comments about how wonderful the school is and the night was. I passed these comments on to staff as they are the ones that work directly with the children. To be in the audience last night was quite a privilege. Group after group of students spoke about different aspects of school life. Their speeches were very polished, but at the same time, the children were incredibly confident and offered many ‘extras’ in their presentations. After the Graduation certificates were presented the dancing began and families were invited to join in. What fun that was watching families all dancing together! As with all events, the evening soon came to a close. After a final video of the students, with many tears shed, it was time to go home and for the volunteers to begin clearing up. I have heard along the Kalinda grapevine that it was 2 am before the Kalinda lights went out! Assembly on Friday will be at 1.00pm for a 1.10pm start. Then it is time for a final goodbye and more tears. We will see you there!

December 2014

From the Principal………….

After a final video of the students, with many tears shed, it was time to go home – and for the volunteers to begin clearing up. I have heard along the Kalinda grapevine that it was 2 am before the Kalinda lights went out! Assembly on Friday will be at 1.00pm for a 1.10pm start. Then it is time for a final goodbye and more tears. We will see you there!

FAREWELL TO STAFF It is with sadness that we say goodbye to Michelle Ogilvie and Matt Anthony as they take up positions at Orchard Grove Primary School. Michelle has been our Leading Teacher for the past four years and Matt has been at Kalinda for 6½ years. Both these teachers have been terrific members of staff with each having strong educational values and experience. We will miss them! Bec Davis and Tanya Italiano are also leaving us. I do thank Bec and Tanya for their work at Kalinda over the past year and I wish them all the very best for the future. Many of you may also know Deb French, who has been working at the school for the past four years for one or two days per week in a Support role. Thank you Deb for all your work in Support, as well as in Environmental Science. Also, Kyle Barnden and Paul Todd are both taking a year’s leave and are due to return in 2016.

WELCOME TO NEW STAFF Replacing Michelle Ogilvie as a Leading Teacher is Mrs Erin Norman. Erin will be part of the Level 2 team as well as being responsible for Literacy across the school. Mr Frederick Lopez will be teaching in Level 3. Miss Carmel D’Amico will be teaching in Level 4 and Miss Melanie Tattersall will be teaching in Level 2. I welcome all these teachers to Kalinda. You will also notice that Mrs Jo Ross has returned from Family Leave for four days a week and Mrs Bron Steele is also returning from Family Leave for two days per week.

DEAKIN SHIELD RECIPIENT

The Deakin Shield is named in honour of Sir Alfred Deakin, after whom this electorate is named, and is an award designed to recognise a student who has shown dedication to achieving their personal goals. It is also an award that focuses particularly on recognising someone who has consistently shown a willingness to be involved in their class, their level and their school community. Someone who puts themselves forward for positions of responsibility, takes a big picture point of view and works collaboratively to see their ideas for improvement take shape and become a real contribution. This year’s recipient of the Deakin Shield award displays the qualities of a smart and mature young leader. This student has always ensured that they are positive and courteous towards everyone they come in contact with. This student has maintained a high level of both sporting and academic success throughout her schooling life. They are able to set themselves extremely high standards and able to manage their time successfully to achieve these. They are always willing to listen to feedback and value the opinions of others within group situations. She also displays a strong eagerness to improve both our school and wider community. An example of this would be her involvement in the ‘Flick a Switch’ campaign, which was aimed at creating a more environmentally sustainable community. One of this person’s strongest qualities is the ability to be proactive and think of others before herself. An example of this would be the organization of a roster to include more student performances in assembly, something she has organised completely at her own accord, solely of the benefit of others. She has represented Kalinda Primary School at many events such as the ANZAC Day service at the Shrine, Ringwood Clock tower for the Remembrance Day service, acted as a tour guide for future parents to the school, the school production.

From the sports desk…

KALINDA PRIMARY SCHOOL’S FREE ACTIVE AFTER-SCHOOL COMMUNITIES PROGRAM:

PLEASE NOTE: **Both of the school’s Term 4 AASC programs (Ultimate Frisbee and Karate) have now finished**

From 2015, Sporting Schools will become Australia’s largest participation program for

all children to foster a lifelong interest in sport. It will also fund sporting activities in

more than 5,700 schools and provide access to a range of trained community

coaches.

With a $100 million investment from the Australian Government, ASC Chief Executive

Simon Hollingsworth said that Sporting Schools will draw on the successful elements

of the ASC’s Active After-school Communities (AASC) programme, which concludes

on 31 December 2014 () Read more…

What ‘Sporting Schools’ might look like for Kalinda Primary School is still unclear. However, we will certainly register to become

part of the Sporting Schools network, with practical sessions set to begin in July 2015. Watch this space!

SCHOOL SPORT VICTORIA RINGWOOD NORTH DISTRICT SWIMMING TRIALS: The first major competitive event

in the Ringwood District Primary School Sports Association (RDPSSA) calendar is traditionally the District Swimming trials. Next

year shall be no different, and the 2015 carnival is scheduled to be held at the Tintern swimming pool (access from Loma St.) on

Monday February 16 (Term 1, Week 4). Due to the fact that the event occurs so close to the start of the school year, it is not

possible to hold trials within the school, so the onus for student nomination becomes a ‘partnership’ between students, parents

and myself. An invitation to students (and parents of students) in Grades 4, 5 and 6 (in 2014) will be in student bags today

(Thursday, December 18) or tomorrow (Friday, December 19). I encourage students and their families to enthusiastically

consider nominating for an event. If you did not receive this paperwork, and would like to get hold of a copy, please let me know

via e-mail and I would be happy to forward a copy to you. The events are all 50m in the following strokes; Freestyle, Backstroke,

Breaststroke and Butterfly. Depending on the nominations that I receive, we may also be able to enter a 4 X 50m Freestyle

and/or 4 X 50m medley relay team.

WEET-BIX KIDS TRYATHLON 2015: Set amongst the giant palm trees of Catani Gardens, St Kilda is a

spectacular place for TRYathletes to start their day! TRYathletes begin with an open water swim in St Kilda

beach, ahead of riding around the specially designed Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlon course in the Gardens!

TRYathletes finish at the Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlon Village where friends and family will cheer them across the

finish line. Event day is Sunday 8 March 2015. Register now to be part of this World record-breaking Series.

Entries will close when field limits are reached.

SCIENCE SAYS: This week’s short, thought-provoking, animated video by ‘ASAP Science’ is “How

Olympians Have Changed (1924 – 2014)” See it here.

SEE YOU IN 2015: As this is the last entry for 2014, I would like to take the opportunity to wish all Kalinda families a safe and

happy Christmas and New Year. Thanks as ever to everyone who has supported and assisted the Health and Physical

Education department, Interschool Sport program, School Sport Victoria pathway or the Active After School Communities

program throughout 2014. We simply could not offer the quality of programs that we do, witout you.
