The temptation of a hefty pocket and a rich wardrobe is one of the hardest lifestyles to avoid in todays society. When the girl with long curly hair, a Ralph-Lauren polo, and Sperry’s sits next to you in your english class, you’re going to want Sperry’s. Or when the boy with his own tuxedo, equipped with gold cufflinks, and a brand-new Rolex grinds up on the girl next to you at homecoming, you are going to want that watch. But how do we afford that? We don’t all have rich dads like Rolex boy over there. And since most of us don’t have a honeypot for a boyfriend or girlfriend, we are left with one thing: To go get jobs. The temptation of a hefty pocket and a rich wardrobe is one of the hardest

lifestyles to avoid in todays society. When the girl with long curly hair, a Ralph-Lauren polo, and Sperry’s sits

Alumni Volleyball Game

That’s not even including your social life. Have a cutie you can kiss? Not anymore! More like kiss them goodbye, forever, because you have to work after school. Is a new pair of shoes really worth being a heartless zombie? Is that glistening watch worth losing the glisten in your eyes? I don't think so. I haven't even addressed scholarships yet. Yes, a job is GREAT if you need to save for college, but make sure that job isn't too strict with your hours. All the time you'll be investing in getting minimum wage will cause you to lose straight A’s. Goodbye scholarships! Want to rely on your ACT/SAT scores? When did you have time to study? You were too busy! In the long run, you will save more with scholarships than a whole year of minimum wage. So, think before you commit to a job: Do you really need a hefty pocket?

In the last week of August, the Manzano High School Volleyball program hosted their annual alumni volleyball game in which former Manzano players returned to their old home court to play three exhibition games against current varsity team. The alumni team consisted of former Manzano volleyball players and ranged in graduating years from 1991 to 2014. In regards to playing on Manzano’s court again, 2005 graduate, Heather Carter, said, “It’s a little scary.” The alumni were not the only players feeling the pressure of the game. The Manzano varsity players were nervous as well. “It’s a lot of pressure,” commented Kat Rasinski, a junior on the varsity team, “We have to show how the team has improved.” The alumni team gave the Manzano Varsity squad respectable competition, but the Manzano team won two of three exhibition games that were played. All of the games were close and marked by great ame play by both sides. The alumni players seemed to be impressed with the play Manzano’s current varsity team. “I think that they’re playing very well together,” noted Andrea Schoeny, a 2008 MHS graduate.

This year's homecoming talent show was one to remember. All of homecoming court showed us amazing talents, from playing the piano blindfolded to lip syncing to High School Musical. For only $2 the audience was able to witness dancing, singing, stand-up, skits, and music from the 2015 homecoming court members. As the audience came into Manzano's Performing Arts Center, they found a seat and got comfortable. Then, as the show began, the puns started rolling out as student senate members, Bernadette LeNguyen, Vincent Tran, and Andy Nguyen, introduced the first act of the show. If you missed the hilarious talents of the court members, here's a quick recap: Grace Walker and Dylan Jetter performed a very talented lip syncing routine, including the songs, "I Will Always Love You" and "Big Girls Don't Cry." Andy Doose and Dmitri Rasinski put together a stand up act where they joked around about "you might be a Monarch if..." Dylan Tat, Marcus Trujillo and Viet Tran presented a funny skit which featured back and front handsprings, cartwheels and quite a couple back flips. Lilly Tran played the piano with a twist, a blindfold! John Moore sang an enchanting song from Shrek: The Musical as sung by Donkey. Alana Aragon performed a monologue, taking on the role of a crazy superstitious woman on an airplane. Unique Robinson performed a spoken word about not being "like those other black girls." It spoke about racism and was very moving. Kaitlyn and Kyle Seubert rapped about their relationship as twins. Kim Bui and William Nguyen wow-ed the audience with a modern dance routine to popular songs. Madison LaBerge and Scotty Desmarais brought everyone back to 2008 with their reenactment of "Bop to the Top" from High School Musical. Elliott Alexander played the theme song from The Godfather on his trumpet. Lenny Ostrovitz and Katelynn Badgley delighted the audience with several knock-knock jokes. Maritza Navidad enchanted the audience with her fabulous magic act. She even selected a member from the crowd to be her assistant! Luisa Pennington sang from her heart the Twenty-One Pilots cover style of "I Can't Help Falling in Love." And finally, Alana Aragon, Kenzy Griffith, Hailee Jones and Kaitlyn Seubert performed the final song from High School Musical, "We're All in this Together." In the end, it was pretty obvious that the 2015 homecoming court talent show was one for the books.

On Friday, September 4, 2015 all 24 members of the 2015 homecoming court teamed up to play two rounds of dodge ball against each other. Team 1 beat Team 2 in both rounds of the game. Andy Doose and John Moore were the powerhouses of team 1, quickly knocking out every single member of team two, except for Unique Robinson, who dodged her hardest, but just couldn’t make a comeback for Team 2.

On Wednesday, September 2nd, Manzano’s varsity volleyball team geared up to play their first game against the Valley Vikings. In the first set, Nikole Bouma had a strong spike bringing MHS into the lead 2-1. Despite a couple failed serves and spikes that led into the net, Valley still pushed due to a lack of communication between the lady Monarchs to 11-6. While VHS was getting accustomed to their winning streak, they celebrated too early on a play and ended up missing the ball as it came back over the net, pulling Manzano up to a weak 11-7. After some amazing teamwork and some great spikes from both Bouma and Kat Rasinski, Manzano was tied with Valley 19-19. Grace Walker spiked forcefully and led MHS to win the first set of the game. In the second set, Manzano came back with confidence. Bouma, Rasinski and Walker had many powerful and assertive spikes over the net. However, due to poor communication towards the end, Manzano lost the second set of the game 27-25. Bouma and Sierra Rowland were the star players of the third set. Bouma had three winning spikes as well as an ace serve, while Rowland served two aces. The Vikings slowly lost confidence and it showed in several hits into the net as well as missed serves. Manzano won the third set 25-19. In the final set, it was clear the lady Monarchs were ready to win. After an incredible spike by Rasinski and a couple taps over the net by Walker the score was in Manzano’s favor 11-8. Rasinski was relentless and had two back-to-back spikes bringing the score up to 15-10. After two deep spikes in the court from Bouma, a spike from Eboni Thomas and the lack of concentration on the Viking’s side of the net, Manzano was once in the lead with a score of 24-21. The Valley Vikings lost to our lady Monarchs 25-21 in the final set, winning the game 3-1.
