U.S. and British forces continue to usethe toxic weapons components calleddepleted uranium (DU) despite stud-ies showing it causes cancer and otherdeadly diseases, reports the BritishBroadcasting Corporation. The twomilitaries claim the substance is safe.“Dr. Keith Baverstock, who worked onthe project, said research conducted bythe U.S. Department of Defense sug-gested otherwise,” reported BBC. “Hedescribed a process known as genotox-icity, which begins when depleted ura-nium dust is inhaled. The research wasnot included in [a 2001 World HealthOrganization report], and Dr. Baver-stock believes it was blocked.”

Global SetbackThe cause of world government hassuffered a setback. A group of UNambassadors, citing a lack of unlim-ited funding for their “MillenniumDevelopment Goals,” reset their pri-orities. Falling to the bottom of theirlist is “adopting a global currency toreduce financial instability,” TheWashington Times reports. Institutinga global currency as a step towardworld government has been a Bilder-berg priority for years.

Hidden RisksBayer A.G. did not reveal to federaldrug officials the results of a largestudy suggesting that a widely usedheart-surgery medicine might in-crease the risks of death and stroke, the Food and Drug Administrationsaid. “Use of Trasylol may increasethe chance for death, serious kidneydamage, congestive heart failure andstrokes,” the FDA said in a publichealth advisory.

Global RefereeRep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.) says aglobal regulator may be necessary tosettle international financial dis-putes, The Financial Times reports.

But in trying to make his case forsuch a sovereignty-surrendering steptoward world government, Frank wasconfused about baseball. “In Ameri-can baseball, if the runner and theball arrive at the base at the sametime, the tie goes to the fielder,” hesaid, explaining why a tie-breakingglobal financial czar may be needed. No Barney, the tie goes to the runner.

Self-Paid WellThe pay of U.S. chief executives is ris-ing faster than corporate earningsand shareholder returns, The Finan-cial Times reports. The median paypackage, which consists of salary, bonuses, options exercised duringthe period and other long-term com-pensation, rose 20% to about $5 mil-lion in the past fiscal year. By con-trast, net profits at their companiesincreased by an average of 15% anddividends rose only 9%.

Jews Back PalestineMore than half (54%) of AmericanJews support creating a Palestinianstate, according to a poll released bythe American Jewish Committee. Onpolitical affiliations, 15% said theyare Republicans, 54% Democratsand 29% independent.

Studds ‘Spouse’ DeniedFormer Rep. Gerry Studds (D-Mass.),who was re-elected to Congress fivetimes after being censured by theHouse for the statutory rape of apageboy, died Oct. 14. But his“spouse,” Dean Hara, whom Studds“married” in 2004 after same-sexmarriage was legalized in Massa-

chusetts, is not eligible to receive anyportion of his $114,337 annual pen-sion. The 1996 Defense of MarriageAct bars the federal government fromrecognizing homosexual “mar-riages,” Peter Graves of the Office ofPersonnel Management said.

Try Bush and SaddamBush and Saddam should both betried for war crimes because bothstarted “aggressive” wars, said Ben-jamin Ferencz, who successfully pro-secuted 22 Nazi officers at the Nur-emberg trials after WWII.

Did You Miss the Lectures?

A S YOU CAN SEE BY OUR cen-ter spread “pull-out” thisweek, we have finally

completed the arduous task ofediting all of the videotapetaken from our 2006 Free Speech confer-ence held over Labor Day Weekend andhave compiled the lectures and panel dis-cussions into one package which we arenow making available to readers for the firsttime. This was no small feat as the entireweekend was jam-packed with speakers. Alltotaled, we are providing around 16 hoursof footage on subjects as varied and contro-versial as depleted uranium, the Sept. 11attacks, the immigration explosion, histori-cal revisionism and Zionism.

Simply put, our Labor Day conferencewas a unique event because of the diversityof researchers, historians, whistleblowersand activists we have brought together. There has been no other event ever where,in one sitting, you could hear a former mil-itary scientist discuss his work on depleteduranium for the U.S. Army; a survivor of theWorld Trade Tower collapse recount his har-rowing account; a Harvard-educatedanthropologist speak on immigration; anda scholar tell the tragic story of how her hus-band was arrested and sent to Germany tostand trial on thought crimes.

We are very proud of the effort we putinto assembling such a group of expertspeakers for that remarkable weekend inWashington. Each and every speaker had animportant message to convey. And all ofyou should seriously consider picking up acopy (either in video format or audio cas-sette) of the talks we are providing here. Ifyou cannot afford the entire package, we arealso making it possible for people to orderindividual DVDs or audio tapes, which wehave grouped together by subject matter.Your support will go a long way in ensuringwe can continue to host these historicevents.

One out of every four combat veter-ans who served in Afghanistan orIraq is filing for disability benefits, which means that unless Congressand the Department of Veterans

Affairs (VA) take steps to reform the process, a large numbermay die before they receive the benefits that were promisedthem by their country.

This has been an ongoing and terrible problem plaguingthe VA, but it has been compounded significantly by thewars initiated by the Bush administration.

Disability claims received at 57 regional Veterans Affairsoffices totaled 788,298 in 2005—a whopping 39% increasefrom the 578,773 in 2000. Although the figures are not com-plete for 2006, they are expected to show a continuingincrease.

On average, the VA takes some 129 days to decide onclaims at the regional level. This is only the beginning forthousands who have been denied benefits and have beenforced to appeal. At this point the waits can get so long thatmany veterans die before a decision is reached. The processis archaic, is mired in bureaucracy and creates unimaginablehardships to thousands of families.

Some veterans going all the way back to World War II arestill waiting for decisions on disability claims.

“The backlog has never been longer than now,” saidRandy Reese, national service director for the DisabledAmerican Veterans.

The U.S. Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims, the finalarbiter, has only seven judges who are appointed by the pres-

ident for 15-year terms. They review cases from the VA’s Boardof Veterans Appeals and determine if the VA erred in denyingclaims or in determining the percentage of disability.

Today, the court has a backlog of 6,080 cases and isreceiving 300 new ones each month. During the past year arecord 3,729 new cases were received by the court, but only2,842 cases were decided. Some insiders have noted that it isimpossible for seven judges to thoroughly vet each case

before passing judgment.Sen. Larry Craig (R-Idaho), chairman of the Senate

Veterans Affairs Committee, said the backlogged cases of thecourt could reach 10,000 in five years.

“The bottom line is that if something is not done soon toreverse these trends,” Craig said, “veterans seeking justicefrom the court may have to wait in a line several years longto get their cases in front of a judge.”

Dan Krasnegor, a Richmond, Va. attorney, said about 40

of his clients died before their cases were decided by theVeterans Appeals Court.

A former Air Force pilot, 75, who lives in Winston-Salem,N.C., is attempting to get his disability rating increased to 50percent. He had been injured in an airplane crash. If he winshis claim and lives long enough, he will be able to receivefree VA medical care and enough money to pay bills andmaintain his home.

He doesn’t qualify for Social Security benefits because, since leaving the Air Force, he has been unable to hold a job.He suffers from seizures because of head injuries sufferedduring the crash. He filed his claim seven years ago. Itreached the Veterans Appeals Court in March 2005, where itlingers among thousands of others.

Today’s modern battlefield surgical practices and bodyarmor saves the lives of many who would have died yearsago. But the percentage of wounded with lost limbs andsevere head injuries has increased. As a result more andmore injured vets are surviving. While this is a blessing totheir families, it has seriously bogged down the VA.

So long as Washington continues to send hundreds ofthousands of young Americans into unnecessary warsaround the world, the fight for veterans’ benefits and the costto taxpayers will increase. ★

AC/DCThe Savage Tale of theFirst Standards War

AC/DC is an intoxicating mix of technological and business history that draws clearparallels to current day standards battles in software and electronics. Before there couldbe computers or televisions, however, there had to be electricity. This is the story of howthe great populist inventor Thomas Edison bet wrong in the vicious war between sup-porters of alternating current (AC) and direct current (DC). The savagery of this battlecan be hardly imagined today. Untold numbers of animals were electrocuted in the bat-tle to dominate public opinion (the most bizarre victim was a circus elephant who is stillmourned by animal rights activists). Even today, the use of electric chairs on death rowis a result of Edison’s campaign to prove the lethality of AC current.

More than a juicy story, AC/DC is an object lesson in bad business strategy and poordecisionmaking. Edison’s inability to see his mistake was a key factor in his loss of con-trol over the operating system for his future inventions, not to mention the company hefounded, Edison General, now General Electric.

By James P. Tucker Jr.

Alittle-noted provision of the recently passedDefense Authorization Act allows PresidentBush to send in the military to police any trou-ble spot in this country regardless of the wish-es of state governors.

On Oct. 17, President Bush signed the John WarnerNational Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2007.The act grants the military the authority to seek fromCongress $462.8 billion. In addition, Senate and Houseconferees added another $70 billion in supplementaldefense spending bringing the overall total of the act to anunprecedented $532.8 billion. The supplemental fundingprovides billions of dollars to help “reset” Army andMarine Corps equipment, which is wearing out faster thanplanned because of the war in Afghanistan and the occu-pation of Iraq.

A highly controversial and little-known aspect of theact “contains a widely opposed provision to allow thepresident more control over the National Guard [byadopting] changes to the Insurrection Act, which willmake it easier for this or any future president to use themilitary to restore order without the consent of thenation’s governors,” Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-Ver.) said.

Americans “certainly do not need to make it easier for

presidents to declare martial law,” Leahy said. “Invokingthe Insurrection Act and using the military for law enforce-ment activities goes against some of the central tenets ofour democracy.

One can easily envision governors and mayors incharge of an emergency having to constantly look overtheir shoulders while someone who has never visited theircommunities gives the orders.”

The act “subverts solid, long-standing Posse Comitatusstatutes that limit the military’s involvement in lawenforcement, thereby making it easier for the president todeclare martial law,” Leahy said. This had been “slipped inas a rider with little study” while “other congressionalcommittees with jurisdiction over these matters had nochance to comment, let alone hold hearings on these pro-posals.”

There is good reason, Leahy said, “for the constructivefriction in existing law when it comes to martial law dec-larations. Using the military for law enforcement goesagainst one of the founding tenets of our democracy. Wefail our Constitution, neglecting the rights of the states, when we make it easier for the president to declare martiallaw and trample on local and state sovereignty.”

The law allows the president to “employ the armedforces, including the National Guard in federal service, torestore public order and enforce the laws of the United

States when, as a result of a natural disaster, epidemic, orother serious public health emergency, terrorist attack orincident, or other condition in any state or possession ofthe United States, that the president determines thatdomestic violence has occurred to such an extent that theconstituted authorities of the state or possession are inca-pable of maintaining public order to suppress in any state, any insurrection, domestic violence, unlawful combina-tion or conspiracy.”

“Or other condition” is a critical line in the new law, skeptics say. The president can send the National Guardinto any community for any—even frivolous—reasons, they argue.

The Founders, as expressed in the written history of thetimes—published speeches and letters—were anxious tonever have a national police force for fear it would be usedto centralize power at the federal level and weaken the roleof states. The president can now, effectively, deploy anational police force to any location in the country on awhim.

The 1878 Posse Comitatus Act reads: “Whoever, exceptin cases and under circumstances expressly authorized bythe Constitution or act of Congress, willfully uses anypart” of the military “as a posse comitatus or otherwise toexecute the laws shall be fined under this title or impris-oned for not more than two years or both.” ★

Ominous Law Passes Congress With EasePresident given unprecedented power to declare martial law regardless of state objections

Eye on the Constitution

On Oct. 17, in a quiet ceremony at the OvalOffice, President Bush signed into law the907-page John Warner National DefenseAuthorization Act of 2007. When it comes todefense spending, massive legislation such as

this is sadly becoming commonplace, and most Americanssimply shrug their shoulders when they hear of it, leaving itto the “experts.” The primary purpose of this bill is to givethe U.S. military the authority to ask Congress for a ridicu-lously huge sum of taxpayers’ hard-earned money—morethan half a trillion dollars—which will go straight into thewaiting pockets of the already obscenely wealthy and pow-erful military-industrial-banking-political complex.

And as if this spending free-for-all is not bad enough, worse still is the frightening provision that was buried deepinside the legislation that hands the president the power tosubvert the authority of states, call in the military to serveunder his command and federalize law enforcement.

Up until Bush’s signing, National Guard units, accordingto law, had been excluded from the Posse Comitatus Act solong as they acted under the authority of the governor of astate. Now, whether Bush understands it or not, he hasstolen the National Guard for the White House and hasgone further than even Democratic presidents in centraliz-ing power in this country.

It is not surprising that this blatant power grab hasreceived scant attention from mainstream columnists, whohave remained all but silent about the grossly unconstitu-tional implications of federalizing the role of law enforce-ment in this country.

But what of the conservatives in Congress? Have theyraised a cry about this subversion of the Constitution?

Incredibly, it took the far left wing in Washington to cast thespotlight on the danger to America of this provision. Hadthis measure been passed by a Democratic president likeBill Clinton, Republicans would have been up in arms overit. “Conservatives” in both the House and the Senate wouldhave taken to the floor, citing previous troubles in ournation’s history, to voice the dangers of subverting PosseComitatus. Instead only Patrick Leahy, the liberalDemocratic senator from Vermont, stood up to chastise theWhite House for its blatant power grab. Conservatives rightnow seem to be too busy trying to save their seats as moreand more Americans take them to task over their spineless

support of Bush’s illegal, aggressive war in Iraq.Hey, conservatives: Do we have to draw you a picture?

Think about it this way: If Hillary Clinton takes the WhiteHouse in 2008, as some people predict she will, then shewill have the power to take command of National Guardunits in states under any condition where she feels it is nec-essary.

Frightening? If not, it’s time for you to come out of thewoodshed.

So when Charley Reese writes in this week’s edition thatthe Republican Party is no longer a conservative party he iscarving out the terrible truth. ★

Rob Reed, public relations spokesman with Texas-based Earth Biofuels, told American Free Press that a large, new Earth Biofuels manufacturing facility has been builtabout 80 miles north of Dallas, Texas, in Durant, Okla.

Reed emphasized the fact that the plant has a payrollquickly approaching $750,000.

Reed, who called the Durant plant “our productionjewel,” said output recently started at 10 million gallonsper year.

“We have plans to expand that to 20 million,” Reedtold AFP.

Notably, Earth Biofuels, located in Dallas, is the exclu-sive maker and distributor of BioWillie, a brand ofbiodiesel fuel in which soybean oil is added to diesel fuel.

BioWillie is named after singer-songwriter WillieNelson, who is dedicated to helping the American worker, particularly struggling family farmers in the heartland.

The beleaguered American working class has seen fac-tory after factory close in the age of free-trade agreementsthat rig the economic system to favor offshore production. Not only is the United States flooded with mostly shoddyimports that siphon American consumers’ money out ofthe country, but the heart of economic prosperity—national production, which creates and sustains the mid-dle class—is shut down.

Reed noted that with such things going on, which havepainted a bleak picture in the minds of a growing numberof Americans, the biofuels industry offers a ray of hope, especially in light of the fact that Americans who valuebiofuels as producers and consumers can help their nationchip away at its long, largely unnecessary and harmfuldependence on imported oil.

“This is about rural America, where jobs have been out-

sourced to India and China,” Reed said.To the north in Indiana, near the small community of

Claypool in the north-central part of the state, a biodieselmanufacturing plant believed to be among the largest inthe world is reportedly under construction, though itsowner is a conglomerate with offices in dozens of coun-tries.

Reed observed that besides the boost in manufacturingfrom biofuels, there’s a large ripple effect as various newjobs will continue springing up in the areas of distribu-tion, including trucking-driving jobs, as well as in retailsales of biofuels.

Loves Truck Stops in Texas, which are family-owned,and a host of other current and future retailers selling

biodiesel fuel will employ a growing number of Amer-icans as the economic and environmental benefits of thesetypes of fuel catch on to the greater public, Reed observed.Every gallon of biodiesel fuel produced, he said, is one lessgallon of diesel that needs to be imported.

“It’s one-to-one for biodiesel,” Reed enthused, citingthe economic-boosting implications of slashing importsas domestic production soars and benefits ripple acrossthe nation. ★

Political realities have forced George Bush tobehave less like the head of the Mexican govern-ment and more like the president of the UnitedStates. After waiting for an election close-up tosign the bill providing for a 700-mile fence on the

Mexican border (“politics had nothing to do with the delay,”hee hee), it was learned that the administration is makingobtaining U.S. citizenship less of a cakewalk. This is surelynot the Bush administration of the recent past, which calledfor amnesty for illegal aliens and an easy hop to citizenship. It is another dramatic example of how outraged patriots, making their voices heard, can turn things around.

Bush signed the fence bill at a White House ceremony inwhich his comments conflicted with his own stated views ofthe past:

“Unfortunately, the United States has not been in com-plete control of its borders for decades and, therefore, illegalimmigration has been on the rise. We have a responsibilityto address these challenges. We have a responsibility toenforce our laws. We have a responsibility to secure our bor-ders. We take this responsibility seriously.”

At literally the same moment, the U.S. Citizenship andImmigration Services (CIS) was busily preparing to respondto House Republicans who have long demanded that appli-cations for citizenship be less frivolous. Mexicans nowbecome “U.S. citizens” who need ballots and other materialsprinted in Spanish, who remain “dual citizens” and vote inMexican elections and whose loyalty remains to Mexico, notthe United States.

Chris Bentley, CIS spokesman, told The Washington Postthat questions on citizenship application forms may bechanged from “What are the colors of the flag?” to “What isone of the fundamental principles protected by theConstitution?” History and English exams are to be tough-ened, he said.

In an effort to detect terrorists entering illegally, alienscould hear such questions as “Who is your current wife’s ex-husband?”

In addition, the CIS is moving to take the financial bur-den of processing 6 million to 7 million applications eachyear off the backs of taxpayers. “A fee review is under way,”Bentley said.

Advocates of illegal aliens, such as the Illinois Coalitionfor Immigrant and Refugee Rights, say the $400 fee will near-ly double. Bentley responded that the new fee is still underconsideration and no amount has been established. “It’sgoing to take twice as long for these people to save up moneyand apply for citizenship,” said the coalition’s Fred Tsao.

“When we do the final analysis, we’re going where themath takes us,” Bentley said. “We have to recoup the costs ofprocessing these applications.” Congress does not appropri-ate funds to pay for the costs of processing the applications,he said.

“American citizenship is priceless,” said CIS DirectorEmilio Gonzalez, himself a naturalized citizen from Cuba. “Ithink people will pay.”

Bentley stood by his boss: “[Citizenship is] the greatestbenefit our country can bestow, and it’s a one-time fee tobecome part of the greatest country in the world.”

The Republican leadership celebrated their president’snew posture on immigration.

“Today marks another step forward in making Americasafer and in stemming the tide of illegal immigration,”House Speaker Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.) and Senate MajorityLeader Bill Frist (R-Tenn.) said in a joint statement. “TheAmerican people demand border security and thisRepublican Congress and president are committed to achiev-ing operational control of the border through an enforce-ment-first approach.”

Previously, Bush and most congressional Democrats hadinsisted that amnesty be part of any border legislation. TheHouse passed a strong borders-only bill in December, but itwas ignored by the Senate, which approved an amnesty billwhich the House rejected. ★

Spotlight on Congress

Acongressional advisory panel is urging Con-gress to seek tough action against China ontwo festering trade disputes: intellectualproperty protection and Washington’s viewthat China’s currency is undervalued.

A draft of the annual report by the U.S.-ChinaEconomic and Security Review Commission, obtainedby the Associated Press, addresses complaints byAmerican manufacturers that the Chinese government’sartificially low currency makes Chinese goods cheaper inthe United States and American products more expen-sive in China.

U.S. lawmakers and companies also say a flood ofpirated movies, computer programs and other copy-righted material in China has cost thousands ofAmerican jobs and restricted the U.S. economy’s abilityto compete.

Congress should urge the Bush administration topursue complaints against China at the World TradeOrganization for what the panel called a massive inter-vention by the Chinese government in international cur-rency markets, the report said. The commission calledfor another WTO case against China for what it said wasfailure to enforce intellectual property rights.

Congress was also urged to define currency manipu-

lation as an illegal export subsidy and allow strongpenalties against an offending country’s export goods.

Congress created the commission in 2000 to investi-gate and report on U.S.-China relations. Its latest report, which also deals with security, energy and militaryissues, will be released in its final version Nov. 16.ELECTION RESULTS

Election results could have a big impact on U.S. tradepolicy. Top critics of China’s economic policies havecome from both parties, but Republicans more thanDemocrats have been inclined to support PresidentBush’s “free trade” initiatives.

In September, Bush asked lawmakers to block a voteon a bill that would have imposed a 27.5 percent tariffon Chinese products coming into the United Statesunless China revised its currency upward. Lawmakersagreed but promised to renew efforts next year to pres-sure the Chinese government to change its currency poli-cies.

Punitive action against China at the WTO is viewed asa powerful weapon. A formal WTO complaint could leadto strict sanctions against China if the United States winsthe case. If the WTO should rule against the UnitedStates, however, analysts say it could send a message toChina that its current approach is acceptable. ★

True scale of massive free tradeproject revealed; ultimate goal isabolition of national sovereignty

By now many Texans have heard aboutthe proposed “NAFTA Superhighway,”which is also referred to as the trans-Texas corridor. What you may notknow is the extent to which plans for

such a superhighway are moving forward without congres-sional oversight or media attention.

This superhighway would connect Mexico, the UnitedStates and Canada, cutting a wide swath through the mid-dle of Texas and up through Kansas City. Offshoots wouldconnect the main artery to the West Coast, Florida and theNortheast. Proponents envision a 10-lane colossus thewidth of several football fields, with freight and rail lines,fiber-optic cable lines, and oil and natural gas pipelines run-ning alongside.

This will require coordinated federal and state eminentdomain actions on an unprecedented scale, as literally mil-lions of people and businesses could be displaced. The lossof whole communities is almost certain, as planners cannotwind the highway around every quaint town, historic build-ing, or senior citizen apartment for thousands of miles.

Texas Gov. Rick Perry (R) is a supporter of the super-highway project, and Congress has provided smallamounts of money to study the proposal. Since thismoney was just one item in an enormous transportationappropriations bill, however, most members of Congresswere not aware of it.

The proposed highway is part of a broader plan ad-vanced by a quasi-government organization called the“Security and Prosperity Partnership of North America,” orSPP. The SPP was first launched in 2005 by the heads ofstate of Canada, Mexico and the United States at a summitin Waco.

The SPP was not created by a treaty between the nationsinvolved, nor was Congress involved in any way. Instead, the SPP is an unholy alliance of foreign consortiums andofficials from several governments. One principal player is a

Spanish construction company, which plans to build thehighway and operate it as a toll road. But don’t be fooled:the superhighway proposal is not the result of free marketdemand, but rather an extension of government-managedtrade schemes like the North American Free Trade

Agreement that benefit politically connected interests. The real issue is national sovereignty. Once again, deci-

sions that affect millions of Americans are not being madeby those Americans themselves, or even by their elected rep-resentatives in Congress. Instead, a handful of elites usetheir government connections to bypass national legisla-tures and ignore our Constitution—which expressly grantsCongress the sole authority to regulate international trade.

The ultimate goal is not simply a superhighway, but anintegrated North American Union—complete with a cur-rency, a cross-national bureaucracy and virtually borderlesstravel within the Union. Like the European Union, a NorthAmerican Union would represent another step toward theabolition of national sovereignty altogether.

A new resolution, introduced by Rep. Virgil Goode(R-Va.), expresses the sense of Congress that the UnitedStates should not engage in the construction of a NAFTAsuperhighway, nor enter into any agreement that advancesthe concept of a North American Union. I wholeheartedlysupport this legislation, and predict that the superhighwaywill become a sleeper issue in the 2008 election.

Any movement toward a North American Union dimin-ishes the ability of average Americans to influence the lawsunder which they must live. The SPP agreement, includingthe plan for a major transnational superhighway throughthe heartland of our nation, is moving forward withoutcongressional oversight—and that is an outrage.

The administration needs a strong message fromCongress that the American people will not tolerate back-room deals that threaten our sovereignty. ★

Most Americans have never heardof Avigdor Lieberman, but theyneed to know precisely who thisdangerous and influential dema-gogue is, because he will be the

Israeli official who defines Israel’s war-mongering policytoward Iran.

As a high-level Israeli power broker, Lieberman may wellbe the one individual who has the very real capacity tospark the next world war. He is the Zionist state’s chief tac-tician in the ongoing effort by Israel and its American lobbyto force mothers and fathers in the United States to dispatchtheir sons and daughters into a war against Israel’s per-ceived number one enemy: the Islamic Republic of Iran.

A veteran Israeli hate-monger, known for his angry racistrhetoric aimed at Christian Arabs and their Muslim broth-ers, Lieberman has been a fixture in Israeli politics for morethan 20 years, in spite of—or perhaps because of—hisalleged ties to Russian-based Jewish organized crime ele-ments who maintain Israeli citizenship.

The rising popularity and political influence ofLieberman, Israel’s new deputy prime minister, and its first-ever cabinet-level “minister for strategic affairs,” is not justa reflection of what some call “Israel’s dark side,” but rather,

instead, represents the reality of opinion amongst a largesegment of the population in Israel today.

A so-called “hard-liner” and “right winger,” Liebermanhas been referred to as “the Israeli Hitler,” and, in fact, hisviews do reflect a form of “Jewish Fascism,” a striking mir-ror image of the so-called “Islamic Fascists” about whom wehear so much in the controlled media in America today.

Lieberman is the key contact in Israel that Israel’s well-heeled advocates in the United States are in liaison with inthe carefully orchestrated push for the Bush administration, with the support of its ostensible “critics” in Congress, toattack Iran, even using nuclear weapons.

Through his influential positioning, Lieberman is coor-dinating Israel’s American-based lobbying and propagandagroups—such as the American Israel Public Affairs Com-mittee, the American Jewish Congress, the American JewishCommittee and the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) of B’naiB’rith, among others—in working to push America intomore wars in the Middle East.

Lieberman remains highly regarded among not only hisIsraeli followers, but among American partisans of Israel, who have no reservations about this no-holds-barred bigot. His harsh rhetoric against Christian Palestinians and theirMuslim brothers recalls the venomous outbursts of a for-mer Israeli cabinet minister, Rehavam Ze-evi who oncecalled Christians and Muslims “lice” and said they were like

a “cancer” destroying the Jewishstate.

Arising from the traditional“ G r e a t e r I s r a e l ” s c h o o l o fthought, Lieberman dreams of theday when the Jewish state stretch-es f rom “ the Ni le to theEuphrates.” In other words,Israel’s borders will reach frominside the current borders ofEgypt and eastward, to assumecommand of all of not onlyLebanon, Syria and Jordan butalso substantial portions of Iraqand Saudi Arabia.

The ongoing U.S. occupationof Iraq, following the U.S. offen-sive against that secular Arabrepublic—largely stimulated bypressure from the Israeli lobby inWashington—is perceived todayby many in the Arab world (andin the Muslim world generally) tobe a partial step toward fulfill-ment of the dream of GreaterIsrael. The destruction of Iran, fol-lowed by a U.S. occupation, would simply be another addi-tional land grab on behalf ofIsrael’s geopolitical ambitions.

Observers from all points of view on the political spec-trum assert that Lieberman’s alliance with the government ofIsraeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, leader of the KadimaParty, has strengthened Lieberman and his own YisraelBeiteinu Party. Although the English translation of the party’sname—“Israel is Our Home”—sounds quaint and cozy,Lieberman’s party calls for what is no less than the “ethniccleansing” of the Christians and Muslims living in Israel.

Growing numbers of Lieberman’s countrymen hail himfor his raucous demands that Christian Arabs and MuslimArabs living inside Israel or under Israeli control be “trans-ferred.”

In truth, what Lieberman and his followers are advocat-ing is genocide, pure and simple, precisely as defined by theinternational Genocide Convention. Genocide isn’t justmurder, under the terms of the global convention. It alsoincludes the forced transfer of ethnic populations. So whileLieberman and his co-religionists in Israel and around theglobe are constantly bewailing genocidal policies againstJewish people, both real and imaginary, Lieberman hasemerged as a much-beloved voice for many Israelis whowant genocide to be practiced against the Arabs.

Although there are those in both Israel and the UnitedStates who put forth the theme that Lieberman is some sort ofpolitical aberration—that he represents a loud and fanatic butrelatively small body of opinion in Israel—there are informedanalysts who don’t buy that theory. Instead, they say,Lieberman is simply saying loudly and without hesitationwhat many people in Israel and its satellite, America, and itsare thinking, protests to the contrary notwithstanding. ★

By Richard Walker

While two executives of the powerful Israelilobby group American Israel Public AffairsCommittee (AIPAC) await trial on chargesof spying against the United States, the FBIhas now broadened its investigation to

look at whether the group tried to strike a deal with a lead-ing member of Congress. In particular, federal investigatorswish to know if AIPAC tried to reach a shady arrangementwith Rep. Jane Harman (D-Calif.), the ranking Democrat onthe House Intelligence Committee.

According to a recent report in a mainstream magazine, the alleged deal was that, in the event Democrats took con-trol of Congress, AIPAC would lobby for Harman, now amember of the House Intelligence Committee, to becomethe chair of that committee. In return, she would be expect-ed to press the White House and Justice Department to goeasy on Keith Weisman and Steven Rosen, the two formerAIPAC executives soon to be tried for espionage.

Weisman and Rosen were connected to a spy ring involv-ing the self-confessed traitor, Pentagon analyst LarryFranklin. In January 2006, Franklin was sentenced to 12years in prison for being part of a conspiracy to communi-cate America’s national defense secrets to a foreign power, namely Israel.

According to Franklin’s explosive indictment, his co-con-spirators were not only Rosen and Weisman, but also UziArad, a former Mossad agent, and Naor Gilan, the leadMossad agent at the Israeli embassy in Washington. Gilanand Arad left the country before they could be interviewedby the FBI, but Rosen and Weisman were not so fortunate. Itsoon emerged that the FBI had a wealth of incriminatingvideo and wire-tapped material on the two AIPAC executivesand had also extracted information from Franklin about hislinks to them and how he passed them classified papers.

Through their lawyers, Rosen and Weisman argued thatthey were not guilty of treason and had been doing onlywhat AIPAC had always done: They had pressured importantpeople in the Pentagon and Congress and passed whateverinformation and documents they got from them to Israel.

The latest claims that AIPAC has been meddling in intel-

ligence circles in Congress will come as no shock to thosewho know just how powerful the Israeli lobby inWashington is. So far, Harman and AIPAC have denied asecret deal. However, to many insiders, such an arrangement

is reasonable given AIPAC’s stated goal of shaping U.S. for-eign policy to suit Israel’s agenda in the Middle East.

Many people suspect that the FBI investigations intoAIPAC and Harman will go nowhere. However, the Israelilobby cannot put the Rosen-Weissman espionage case underthe rug. The evidence in the case shows conclusively thatAIPAC has been the means by which Israel has acquired crit-ical intelligence on America’s Middle East policy, which ithas used to influence American public opinion and WhiteHouse policy.

The most staggering aspect of the Franklin conviction wasthat, even though it proved AIPAC was spying on the UnitedStates, the majority of members on both sides of the Houseturned a blind eye to that fact. In other words, Congress wasnowhere near as concerned as U.S. courts were thatAmerica’s national secrets were being acquired by a powerfulspecial interest group on behalf of a foreign power.

From the moment news of the FBI investigation in AIPACbroke in 2004, the Israeli lobby in Washington called inpowerful friends and started circling the wagons.

When it was leaked that Pentagon analyst Franklin hadconfessed to passing classified national security documentsto the Israelis, the Anti-Defamation League called for a probeinto FBI leaks as though leaks were more important thanespionage.

AIPAC used its powerful friends in the U.S. media andCongress to play down its role in the espionage conspiracy. To that end, it persuaded Secretary of State Condoleezza Riceto deliver the keynote address to the May 2005 AIPAC con-vention in Washington. The event was also attended by VicePresident Dick Cheney, Sen. Hilary Clinton (D-N.Y.) andleaders of the House and Senate. ★

“AIPAC would lobby for Harman tobecome the chair of the House IntelligenceCommittee. In return, she would press theWhite House and Justice Department to goeasy on Keith Weisman and Steven Rosen,

the two former AIPAC executives soonto be tried for espionage.”

If members on both sides of the House have been soseduced by AIPAC that they refuse to see how muchU.S. policy in the Middle East is shaped by AIPACthey might be interested in a recent poll by Zogby

International. The national survey showed that a large per-centage of Americans believe the pro-Israel lobby was asignificant influence on the Bush administration’s deci-sion to invade Iraq and take a hard line on Iran.

The poll by Zogby, conducted on behalf of the Councilfor the National Interest Foundation, showed that 39% ofAmericans believe the Israel lobby was a powerful influ-ence on U.S. Middle East policy while 40% disagreed and20% were unsure.

When those figures were further broken down, it was

clear that half of Democrats believed the Iraq war decisionwas influenced by the Israeli lobby, while only 45% ofRepublicans did.

Broken down by demographic, almost 77% of JewishAmericans disagreed that the lobby was a powerful factorin U.S. decision-making, whereas 55% of Hispanics tookthe opposite view.

One of the interesting findings of the survey was thatmore Americans in the 18 to 29 age group saw an Israelihand in U.S. foreign policy.

In a more shocking national poll by Zogby, anotherstudy showed that a majority of academics believe theUnited States’ link to Israel is a serious threat to globalpeace and stability. ★

While the free world celebratesChina’s help in efforts to per-suade North Korea to abandonnuclear missiles, the Chinesecommunists are still secretly

helping Pyongyang develop such weapons, according to acongressional report.

The final draft report of the U.S.-China EconomicSecurity Review Commission also says the Chinese are con-tinuing to threaten U.S. security by exporting arms aroundthe world.

The report is based on highly classified intelligencereports made available to its members and staff. It indirectlycriticizes President Bush for failing to pressure China intojoining U.S.-led anti-proliferation efforts.

“China has contributed at least indirectly to North Kor-ea’s nuclear program,” the report said, noting that China wasa “primary supplier” to Pakistan’s nuclear-arms program.

Congress created the bipartisan commission of outsideexperts in 2000 to analyze the impact of U.S.-China relationson security and the economy. (For more on this report, seeSpotlight on Congress, page 8.)

North Korea received nuclear goods from the covertPakistani nuclear supplier headed by Pakistani scientist A.Q.

Khan, the report said. Several links between Pakistan andNorth Korea’s arms program have been identified, it said.

The unclassified version of the report does not includedetails of Chinese support but says China has “a history” ofhelping North Korea develop missiles. The classified por-tions were first leaked to the Associated Press. China receivedmuch of its nuclear know-how from Israel.

U.S. intelligence officials say North Korean front compa-nies operate freely in China and have used China as a tran-sit point for trade in missiles and nuclear components.

One North Korean nuclear procurement agent was iden-tified by U.S. officials as Yun Ho-jin, who was working inShenyang, China. Ho-jin sought to buy metal rods withnuclear applications in Germany while posing as an officialof the Chinese aircraft manufacturer Shenyang Aircraft Corp.

Chinese companies and government organizations“continue to provide weapons, weapons components andweapons technology” in violation of China’s commitmentsto international non-proliferation agreements, the reportsaid. ★

By Mike Blair

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg(R) has refused to turn “evidence”he says he has of illegal gun sales infive states over to the US. Bureau ofAlcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives

(BATFE). The “evidence” was collected by agents hired byBloomberg to go state to state to try to entrap gun sellers.

Will the multi-millionaire mayor, a rabid gun-grabber,have his offices raided by SWAT teams of the BATFE or willBloomberg be hauled into U.S. District Court in hand-cuffs?

In May, Bloomberg sent private investigators into fivestates to gather evidence on gun dealers that he allegeswere making illegal sales. His intent was obviously to ren-der moot the Second Amendment right of the people to“keep and bear arms.”

In what many believe was entrapment, Bloomberg’shired investigators entered gun shops in Virginia, SouthCarolina, Georgia, Pennsylvania and Ohio to try to makeillegal purchases. One agent would show interest in afirearm and the other would make the purchase, so themayor claims.

Bloomberg contends that federal law prohibits licenseddealers from selling firearms to someone when the dealerhas a reasonable belief that the weapon is being sold tosomeone other than the actual buyer.

The mayor claims the shops were targeted because ofthe large number of guns involved in crimes committed inNew York between 1994 and 2001 that were traced back tothem.

His hired agents were supposedly able to make “strawpurchases” of firearms in 15 stores in the five states. Now,the 15 gun dealers face a lawsuit in New York, where offi-cials there are seeking monetary damages, prohibition ofillegal gun sales, appointment of a special “master” tomonitor the dealers and orders that the dealers submit totraining. All of the dealers, of course, are licensed by theBATFE after extensive investigation and they are all closelymonitored, as are their sales, by the federal agency.

As a result of his “sting” operation, the BATFE said itwould look into the mayor’s accusations against the deal-ers but would also investigate whether his hired agentsacted illegally.

It is believed that Bloomberg’s secret agent mission, which he kept hidden from the BATFE, may have putBATFE investigations and agents in jeopardy.

Now, Bloomberg refuses to share his evidence until theBATFE signs an evidence-sharing agreement prohibitingthe agency from “publicly disclosing evidence withoutnotice and consent from the city.”

“The feds don’t have to sign an agreement if there’s evi-dence of criminality,” said Stephen Halbrook, an attorneywho works with Second Amendment groups. “It demon-strates that Mayor Bloomberg lacks sincerity in this so-called crusade, because if he believes crimes have beencommitted, he would want them to take federal action.”

Mechanisms are in place for usto punish those responsible forBush misdeeds of last six years

During my professional lifetime, lib-erals and the left wing have focusedon failures and misdeeds of the pri-vate sector, while libertarians andconservatives have focused on the

failures and misdeeds of the public sector or government. It turns out that both sides are right.

The Enron case and the other accounting scandals ofthis new century are testimony to misdeeds driven by pri-vate sector greed, just as the unjustifiable war in Iraq is tes-timony to the abusive behavior of government.

Justice demands that we be always on guard against aprosecutor’s case. However, the devastation wrought byfraud committed by a few at the top of Enron seems real.Thousands of employees lost jobs and pensions, andshareholders took a large hit.

We now know that fraud on the part of the Bushadministration launched the ill-fated Iraqi war. The war’sfinancial and human cost dwarfs the Enron catastrophe. The out-of-pocket cost of the war to date is $337 billion, with steep future costs for veterans’ care and replacementof military equipment.

Approximately 3,000 U.S. troops have been killed, andDepartment of Veterans Affairs documents show that100,000 veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan have been grant-ed disability compensation. Estimates of Iraqi civilian“collateral damage” range from 30,000 to 655,000 deaths.America’s reputation has been shattered, and the pro-spects for terrorist “blow-back” are higher.

The most important difference between these twofraud cases, however, is in accountability. The Enron exec-utives have been brought to justice with prison sentences,

multimillion-dollar fines and, in one case, death from aheart attack brought on, perhaps, by the stress of prosecu-tion.

Even if the Bush administration and the rubber-stampCongress are held accountable in the elections, the ring-leaders of the war are unlikely to be brought to justice.Polls indicate that the November election—if votes arehonestly counted, an uncertainty with the electronic vot-ing machines—will hold Bush and the Republicansaccountable by ending one-party rule.

A number of commentators have noted that with theDemocrats as complicit in the war as the Republicans, achange in party control over one or both houses ofCongress is not exactly accountability. But the problem islarger than that.

When government officials are held accountable, theyare merely voted out of office and not generally prosecut-ed. They do not suffer the same severe punishments astheir counterparts in the private sector. Enron destroyedjobs, not people’s lives, and the financial cost was incon-sequential compared to Iraq. The disparities in accounta-bility and punishment for misdeeds in government andprivate sectors are striking.

So far in history no private sector interest has been ableto achieve power over a population comparable to thepower wielded by Stalin or Hitler, and no private sectorpower has been able to set aside civil liberties as Bush hasdone. The liberal-left notion that government is our pro-tector from the private sector is as naive as the libertarian-right view that all wrong resides in the government. Thecommon denominator of wrong is the fallibility of man.

The Founding Fathers gave us a government infusedwith sufficient power to deliver justice to a people whobelieve in justice, but structured to be incapable of enslav-ing the people. The government’s powers were separated, dispersed and tied down with the Constitution and Bill ofRights. Law was made a shield of the innocent rather thana weapon in the hands of government.

Both left and right, however, have fallen into a type ofthinking in order to better chase after the particular devilsin their agendas. “Law and order conservatives,” for exam-ple, are inclined to regard certain civil liberties as “cod-dling criminals” and thoughtlessly take the side of policeand prosecutors against civil liberties. Both left and rightare prepared to deny First Amendment rights to the otherside, and political correctness makes it impossible todebate many issues or to acknowledge many problems. The left has long campaigned against the Second Amend-ment, an essential civil liberty.

When a problem is pointed out, people demand a pro-gram of action as a solution. However, not every problemhas a policy solution. When people no longer understandthat civil liberties are more important than political agen-das, they have lost sight of the belief system that protectsthem. Beliefs are more important than institutions. ★

Fiscal restraint, personal liberty,non-interventionism typifytrue political conservatism

The Republican Party is not now, neverwas and never will be a conservativeparty. It is what it has always been—arepresentative of the rich and of bigbusiness. It might have become a con-

servative party in 1964, when Barry Goldwater was nomi-nated as the presidential candidate. The Rockefeller wing ofthe party, of which the Bush family has always been a part, conducted the most vicious character assassination cam-paign against Goldwater in modern political history. Theliberal Rockefellerites preferred a crook from Texas [LyndonBaines Johnson] to a conservative.

The Rockefeller wing never lost control of the partyagain, co-opting Nixon, Ford and even Ronald Reagan, whowas forced to take George Bush as his vice president. TheBush people, within two years, ran off nearly all of the orig-inal Reagan supporters.

There was a famous quote by James Baker, the firstBush’s hatchet man. He was quoted as saying: “Who else arethe conservatives going to vote for?”

Well, Mr. Baker discovered that the conservatives hadthree choices in 1992. They could stay at home, they couldvote for Ross Perot, or they could vote for Bill Clinton. Ihope he thought of that while he watched Clinton’s inau-guration.

The hard truth is that if you are a genuine political con-servative, you don’t have a party. The Democrats are practi-cally socialists; the Republicans are closer to corporate fas-cists. Neither one offers conservatives anything but rhetoric.

But let’s define our terms, because it is my belief that notmany Americans today are really conservative. Political con-servatism has nothing to do with such social issues as abor-

tion or gay marriage. Those are moral and philosophicalissues that properly belong to the state legislatures.

A true conservative recognizes that the Constitution is abinding contract that should be interpreted literally and inthe context of the time at which it was written and ratified.A Constitution that means anything a judge says it meansmeans nothing. Abraham Lincoln and his Republican Partywere the first to violate it in a blatant manner. One of

Lincoln’s cronies referred to it as “a worthless piece of parch-ment.”

A true conservative is fiscally responsible. Laying debtand interest payments on posterity is neither conservativenor liberal. It is just obscenely irresponsible.

A true conservative believes in noninterference in theaffairs of other countries. Regime change is a policy favoredby fascists or communists, but it has nothing to do withAmerican conservatism. Americans have the right to governonly one country—their own. Americans have an obligationto defend only one country—their own.

A true conservative believes in a free economy and thatbeyond protecting the public from force and fraud, the gov-ernment should not interfere in private affairs.

There are a lot of other things that define a genuine con-servative, but suffice it to say that the Republican Party, withits imperialistic foreign policy, its disdain for theConstitution and the rule of law, its fiscal irresponsibilityand its erosion of personal liberty, is not by any stretch ofthe imagination a conservative party.

It wouldn’t be a bad idea for people to sit down with apencil and paper and list what they actually believe.Clarifying their own political philosophy might make themless susceptible to the demagoguery and political propagan-da that characterize our present age.

When the Founding Fathers laid the burden of self-gov-ernment on us, they didn’t do any favors for the ignorantand lazy-minded. Tom Jefferson observed that those whoexpect to be ignorant and free expect what never was andnever will be. ★

Warner Home Video has marked the 50thanniversary of the finest Western evermade, The Searchers, by releasing an all-new edition of the iconic film on DVD.Starring John Wayne, along with a top-

notch cast that includes Jeffrey Hunter, Ward Bond,Natalie Wood, Vera Miles and masterfully directed by thelegendary, John Ford, the movie is a powerful and grippingdramatic adventure which, cinematically, remains flaw-less.

The Searchers has inspired filmmakers, writers, actors, songwriters and moviegoers to the present day and easilyranks with such timeless classics as A Man for All Seasonsand The Birth of a Nation. Beyond the seemingly simplisticmain story line, however, lies a host of complex subplotsand themes which will cause viewers to contemplate theirmeaning as long as there is film commentary.

It is a dominating performance by Wayne and while hewould give many others throughout his storied career, thiswould be his greatest. As a director, few would argue thatit was not Ford’s magnum opus.

Why the movie industry’s biggest star was not given anacademy award nor even nominated for the role remainsa blight on Hollywood. Yet, it is not surprising if oneknows and understand Wayne’s politics and the forceswhich have long controlled the entertainment business.

With his anti-communist—“the red gang” was the termthe actor often used to describe the leftist infiltration ofHollywood—and America-first views, it is no wonder thatWayne was a loyal subscriber to the now defunct patrioticand populist Spotlight newspaper.

It is a movie which, in the current politically correctera, could have never been made for it is quite probablythe last film to have portrayed an ethnic minority in atreacherous light. In this case, it was the character, “JeremFutterman,” as a potentially murderous villain beforeWayne’s character does him in first.

One should not, however, get sidetracked by a relative-ly small, though interesting, incident in this spellbindingepic, but focus on the unforgettable scenes, mostly shot in

Monument Valley, and dialogues which occur throughout.Take, for instance, the conversation early in the filmbetween Wayne’s character, “Ethan Edwards,” and that of“Capt./Rev. Samuel Johnson Clayton,” superbly played byWayne’s off-screen good friend, Ward Bond.

In a sense, The Searchers was a watershed; it roughlymarked the closing of an era where white people particu-larly males were portrayed in heroic roles. Ever since, movies, television and the entertainment industry haveengaged in an insidious program to demean and belittleWestern culture. Their efforts have been widely successfuland have been an important, although much overlooked, factor in the transformation of Western society into itspresent multicultural nightmare.

The Warner Home Video 50th anniversary editioncomes with two DVD discs, a number of black and whitestill photos of the actors shot during production, a comicmagazine of the story, and a picture booklet showing pro-motions and advertisement for the movie at the time of itsrelease.

The movie disc has a short introduction by Wayne’sson, Patrick, who had a small role in the film and a sceneby scene commentary by director, Peter Bogdanovich, which is, unfortunately, marred by a somewhat typicalleftist mindset. The companion piece has more commen-taries by film directors and some of the surviving actorsplus rare footage of Wayne and Ford.

If you do not already own a copy of The Searchers, the50th anniversary box set is a must purchase. You can orderit on the Internet or at your local movie retailer. ★

I am just shocked at how much informa-tion I get from you that I never see in my localpaper. For example, the plan to build a NAFTAsuperhighway and expand free trade in thiscountry was news to me. When I tell people ofthis around my town, most politely dismissme. Others just laugh and scoff. It really isamazing how information we get today istotally worthless. Friends and neighbors knowall about the latest celebrity divorce, butwhen it comes to important issues like jobsleaving our country and other sellouts, theyare clueless. Thanks, AFP, for the real news. I’llkeep reading.

EXPENSIVE GUESTWORKERSFor most of the people who support

amnesty-guestworker immigration legislationand say that the illegal aliens help the econo-

my, here are some facts brought out by theCongressional Budget Office. The Senate billpassed earlier this year, with President Bush’ssupport, will cost the nation’s taxpayers anestimated $127 billion over the next 10 yearsif it becomes law. The price tag includes $24.5billion for earned income and child credits aswell as $11.7 billion in Medicaid, $5.2 billionfor Social Security, $2.7 billion for Medicareand $2.4 billion for food stamps. “Theamnesty alone will be the largest expansion ofthe welfare system in the last 25 years,” saidRobert Rector, an analyst at the HeritageFoundation. Unless you are a non-productivecitizen and don’t pay any taxes, this will comeout of your pocket, too. I believe we citizenscould spend this money helping legal citizensof this country and make it a better place forall of us to live in.

No TV for HimAre Americans being dumbed down or are

they just collectively insane? The answer isboth. The culprit is television, along withmovies and computers, which limit and dis-able the imagination of the viewer. Mankindgot along just fine without these for thou-sands of years. Since the arrival of projectedimages about a century ago, I’d argue that thecondition of man has deteriorated rapidly. There is no one today in a league with Wash-ington, Jefferson, John Adams, or Twain. Theydid not need television to enlighten them.

Now, I was born in 1955, one of the firstkids to have television for a babysitter. In 1970my lifestyle had changed so that watching tel-evision was not convenient. I never went backto it. Oh, there were a couple of brief lapsesfor a week or two, but I found no satisfactionand found better things to do. Today I can’twatch it at all and feel really good about life.

END THE OCCUPATION. More than 100 soldiers announced in late October that they areseeking protection under the Military Whistleblower Protection Act to talk openly aboutwhat is really going on in Iraq without fear of reprisal. Among them is Navy SeamanJonathan Hutto, who spoke with reporters about the plan. “The discussion needs to shiftfrom whether to stay or get out to how best to get out,” he said. “Iraq, just like Vietnam, isa war that’s not about a real threat to the security of America. . . . We say it’s time to stepout. To our political leaders and policymakers we say the occupation has to come to anend.”

TALKING ABOUT MURDER AND RAPE. U.S. District Judge Alvin K. Hellerstein ruled inlate October that graphic pictures of detainee abuse at Iraq’s Abu Ghraib prison must bereleased despite government claims that they could further damage America’s image. Forover a year, the ACLU had been fighting to have the sickening photos shown to Americans.“The American public needs to understand we’re talking about rape and murder here. We’renot just talking about giving people a humiliating experience,” Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) said after Rumsfeld testified before the Senate Armed Services Committee in 2005.“We’re talking about rape and murder—and some very serious charges.” ————

★AFP’s Did They Really Say That?

Blind to Our Shortcomings

IAM AFRAID THAT AS A NATION, we have become blind to our shortcomings. Corporategreed is wreaking havoc around the world with the blessing of our government. Theplutocratic government of ours has built the largest empire the world has ever seen.We craft so-called free trade agreements. However, they are not fair trade agreements,

as the corporations and their minions in Washington always skew them in favor of thewealthiest investors.

Could there be a connection between war mongering and profit? Could the reason weare in Afghanistan and Iraq have anything to do with oil? Are pretexts sometimes neces-sary to mobilize the people to enter wars for less than noble reasons? Would Israel reallyprofit from peace? Is it any wonder why countries which feel threatened by the UnitedStates and its ally wish to develop their own nuclear weapons?

Thank God new leaders in South America are emerging to fight the unjust policies ofthe American corporate empire.

U.S. Good CountryPeople will tell you that the United States

is still a good country with a government thatis basically OK, even though they may notagree with everything it does. The people inthis country, however, don’t have the moxie toface up to the truth because they are too com-fort-oriented. Americans essentially live fortheir creature comforts and nothing else.

I don’t think patriots should give up lestwe become guilty of dereliction of duty but weshouldn’t be disappointed when we see noresults.

REV. FATHER C. HUNTERVeneta, Oregon

Heard on the RadioRecently I tuned in to a radio talk show

and found an illegal alien was holding forthon how he and his family have been making avery good living here in the United States. Hehad a very prosperous business, and it would

be very bad for him if the government decid-ed to deport all illegals. Now for the life of meI can’t figure out how an illegal alien can havea seemingly legitimate business for so manyyears in the United States. Could he have doneit under the table? Bribes and payoffs? Withno Social Security number and no citizenshippapers how could he legally have signed up toget a business ID tax number or pay taxes andnot be discovered and deported?

The more I think about it, this illegal alienmess just gets worse and worse.

The Dog andThe Butcher

ONE DAY, WHILE THE TOWN BUTCHER WAS IN HIS SHOP, quietly processing meat for theevening rush, a large dog ran into his store, grabbed a roast right off of one of hiscutting boards and took off into the street. The butcher tried to give chase, but thedog was simply too fast for him. However, he could see the dog far off down the

street catch up with the town’s lawyer, who was holding a dog leash in his hand. The next day, the butcher went to the lawyer’s office and asked him: “If a dog running

unleashed steals a piece of meat from my store, do I have a right to demand payment for themeat from the dog’s owner?”

The lawyer answered, “Absolutely.” “Good,” said the butcher. “Then you owe me $8.50.Your dog was running loose yesterday and stole a roast from me.” Without a word, the lawyerreached into his desk, took out his checkbook, wrote a check for $8.50 and handed it to thebutcher. “Thank you,” said the surprised butcher. “That was a lot easier than I thought itwould be.” “No problem,” said the lawyer, who picked up his phone and paged his secre-tary. “Mrs. Smith,” said the lawyer. “Please bill this man $150 for a consultation.”
